Living happily with her single-parent mother Alexis, Abalone's world is thrown into disarray when her Mum is suddenly taken ill and diagnosed with cervical cancer. Unwanted and unloved by her maternal Grandma Leah, Abalone stays with their friend Sophie while Alexis is in hospital and while visiting her befriends a girl called Grace and her mother Imogen.
The two women become best friends, as do their daughters and Abalone now feels a lot happier that they both have friends who understand what they are going through.
Alexis eventually comes home with Imogen and Grace to offer support. Alexis confides in Abalone more about her father, Ralph and also that Imogen has offered Abalone a home should she ever need it. However, Abalone is very upset and blots it out of her mind.
An act of stupidity by Grandma Leah again throws their lives into chaos. Will the two of them surmount this further tragedy or will Abalone have to travel life's road alone?
