When Hearts Surrender

Rate this book
A cold, reclusive billionaire, a dark family curse, and an arranged marriage with the one woman he’s forbidden to love.

All my life, restlessness has haunted me, as if a piece of my soul were missing. Then, I met him.

A mysterious, charismatic bad boy in a leather jacket who whisked me away on the ride of a lifetime.

For the first time, I felt truly alive.

But as suddenly as he appeared, he vanished, taking my heart with him. I thought I wouldn’t see him again until I walk into a room to meet the man my parents arranged for me to marry to save my family’s business.

Maxwell Anderson is one of the city’s most powerful men. The reclusive billionaire—the frigid king, as the press calls him—is cloaked in shadows and secrets. He’s overbearing and mercurial, his moods giving me whiplash. He’s the complete opposite of the man I met that magical night.

He tells me he’s cursed, that he can never love me—his love is a literal death sentence.

But what if I’m willing to risk everything—my body, my heart, my very life? And judging by his heated gazes and scorching touches, he’s just as desperate to defy fate?

Can we conquer the curse or will our love be our undoing?

3.5 rounded up to 4 because the mystery hooked me in 😂

this was my first book by this author and i liked her writing, there were just some things that didn’t sit well with me that kept me from fully enjoying the book.

i will start with the good first though!

i liked the anxiety rep for the H. he was basically a recluse and felt like a freak because of his anxiety and i really wanted to just wrap him my arms and then beat the fuck out of him because he really pissed me off every other second of this book.

i also REALLY liked the curse aspect. the hidden rooms and secrets was just so interesting and even though i knew where it was headed, i still enjoyed the reveal of soul mates and stuff

the things Maxwell would do even though he acted like he hated the h was so cute 🫣🫣🫣🫣

like how he painted her room her favorite color and decorated it with her favorite artist.
how he helped the animal shelter she loved and even though he said he hated her dog, would show him love 😂😂😂😂

now the not so great…. AND I DONT KNOW IF THIS WILL BE SPOILERY SO READ AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!! ❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌❌

the dead wife thing…….. the H was married to his high school sweetheart right out of high school basically but she was in love with him AND his twin brother and she loved his brother more and the H overheard their argument right before she died but she was brought up ALLLLLLLLL THE TIIIIIIIIME. he would feel attraction to the h and then see his dead wife’s lifeless face. and i KNOW it was out of guilt because of the curse and not because the h was second best but i still hated it. he later said it was puppy love but i dont believe that at all. i do believe he loved the h more but my gaaaawwwwwdddd he talked about his dead wife so much.

now i know there is a “gentleman’s club” that has sex floors and the H would go there once or twice a year when he felt the urge and i think i remember it saying it’s been at least a year for him but when the h and H talk about their arrangement he says he will be loyal AFTER THEY SAY THEIR VOWS and then when he tells her he will never love her she storms out…….so he goes to the voyeur part of the club and watches a girl get off but then feels like he’s cheating so he leaves. it was so unnecessary and it really made me mad and couple that with how big of a dick he was to the h…..he was on my shit list.

thank you so much for the arc and honestly i probably will read the next book

When Hearts Surrender

This was my first novel by Victoria, and it reminded me of old stories from my parent's shelves I read growing up. I wish this could be made into a movie, as this story is of a forbidden love that can never be broken.

WHS begins with the origins of a family curse that would torment the Anderson family for more than 164 years, with Emma and Silas; a love forever lost in time. The story then shifts to the current day, with Maxwell and Belle who are both from powerful families in New York high society. Maxwell is about to marry a woman he has never met before. But a moment changes everything when he meets Belle, the woman who steals his breath away, and after a night of adventures, he realizes he can't keep her because he's promised to someone else and must let her go. As he leaves Belle in the past, he soon discovers that his soon-to-be new wife is none other than Belle. However, as these two discover who they will say forever to, Maxwell realizes he must protect his heart from falling in love, or he would lose her forever. Yet, Belle soon discovers the man she met is not the person she's marrying, but she hopes that she will be able to change his heart. Victoria takes us through a story straight out of a Gothic backdrop, this couple kept my heart in my throat as they had me fighting right beside them to change the course of the history shrouded by their love story.

Maxwell, the mysterious, distant one of the Anderson siblings; he's known to be COLD. Even though I wanted to shake him a few times, he's a sensitive man who has dealt with so much loss in his life that has him stuck in fear. I enjoyed the different sides of Maxwell, including the bad boy to the billionaire. However, my favorite side of him was when he was with Belle, he became the man he was always meant to be. Belle is literally the bell of the ball. She was such a great surprise in this book, she's nothing like the world she was raised in, and she has a deep love of family, animals, her friends, design, and art as she fights for her future and her family legacy.

Victoria wrote a story filled with such passion and detail that had me feeling like I was walking through the halls of Wraithmoor Abbey, meeting the Anderson family. I have to go back and read the first two books, but I'm so intrigued with rest of these siblings.

Thank you, Victoria, for the ARC 🖤

Hello Lovely Readers,

I woke up this morning and realized—whoops!—I never posted a release-day message for When Hearts Surrender! So, nearly a month later, here it is (better late than never)!

Thank you so much for diving into Maxwell and Belle's story. This book holds a special place in my heart; their romance is truly epic, and Maxwell epitomizes the kind of main male character who would sacrifice everything for the woman he loves. Writing their journey, with all its twists and turns, was thrilling and heartrending, and I hope it's just as captivating for you to read.

This story contains some heavy topics, which are near and dear to my heart. If you have any triggers, please take a look at the content warning in the book—your mental health is the most important thing to me.

When Hearts Surrender has a gothic, darker atmosphere, blending the past and the present: the prologue is set in the 1800s, written in third person, while the main story is modern times, told in present tense from a first-person perspective. It’s a bit different from my usual style, but still contains the angst, emotions, swoon, and steam we all love.

The characters were in the driver seat this time and they made the story ten times more than what I originally envisioned. And even one month later, I sit here enthralled and mesmerized by their love story.

I’ve poured a lot of love into Maxwell and Belle, and I hope you’ll feel it as you immerse yourself in their world.

Xoxo,
Victoria

First of all, thank you Victoria for sending me this ARC to read. Congratulations 🥳

Maxwell and Belle meet one night at a race, and they spend the night together exploring the city. Unfortunately, they’re both set up to marry someone else, so they just enjoy the night and don’t exchange contact information. What a surprise it is when they realize they have to marry each other.

I loved this marriage of convenience romance. Gothic vibes. Family curse. Soulmates. I did not expected the twists and turns and I loved Belle and Maxwell’s chemistry. I love the world building in the Orchid series, how we get to see other characters from previous and next books. The mystery with the family curse is really intriguing, I loved the ending and didn’t expected it !!

When Hearts Surrender is out !! If you love marriage of convenience, age gap, gothic vibes, breeding kink, this one is definitely for you!!

Ever since book 1, I knew that something mystical was in the air around the Anderson family. Well, it was time to find out what this was.

If I have to be honest, I was a little afraid about starting this book. Not because I would not like it. I had this feeling that from the moment I do, the story would consume me completely. I was not wrong. As soon as I put my mind at ease, I devoured the book in no time.

It was Belle's year of Yesses. She wanted to change her life and rebelled at her parents' decision to marry her off to an unknown man. One chance encounter meets her with a dark stranger who sweeps her off her feet. She needed one night under the stars to fall in love with him. Even though they only kissed, he made her heart flutter. But their time together was cut short. Little did she know that this would be her future husband...the one she would love for eternity.

Maxwell is the older Anderson. He truly believes in the curse surrounding his family. He was married before, but his wife died because of that curse. He doesn't want to fall in love again because he is afraid his love will also die. But he never counted on meeting Belle...the beautiful fairy girl that turned his life around for just one night...and also his future wife. He never thought he would love again, but she proved him wrong. He fell in love with Belle even before they got married. The thing is, will she live, or will the curse make her lose her life...or maybe this time love will win?

This book was a rollercoaster of emotions. Was it angsty? Oh, it was definitely that. These two were like a maddening fire that took everything in its path.

The mystery surrounding the plot of the story...the curse...it felt so gothic. This scary, but beautiful mansion, his deep-buried secrets that were forgotten up until now. And this beautiful and tragic love...it was so damn mesmerizing.

I liked the fact that the story was focused on the love of the MC's + the mystery at the same time.

One thing is certain. I want Belle and Maxwell's book on my physical library shelf and as soon as it comes out, I will buy the paperback.

This book...this story... was outstanding, and I stay behind my decision for the 5 stars.  If I could, I would double the book rating.

Fasten your seat belts because you are about to experience an incredible love journey with Gothic elements.

"I promise not to love you" - he says. He was just trying to convince himself that he did not, but every person reading it hears in their minds. But in the end the simple truth was:

"I love you most ardently and fervently." - he rasps, his deep voice hoarse and filled with passion. "Yours forever…this lifetime and all the lifetimes thereafter."

This book is very different from the other books in the series because there is a noticeable shift in "genres". The book is definitely more gothic featuring "supernatural" elements that kinda make the curse what it is. I personally really enjoyed this twist.

the storyline
Reclusive billionaire, Maxwell Anderson (H) has been plagued by the generational curse and trauma that has fallen upon his family of the first born son's loves dying in tragic/very abrupt manners. After losing his first love in the same way the curse has mapped out, Maxwell has succumbed to the curse and has since closed himself off emotionally.

That is, until Belle Law-McKenzie crashes into his life in a night where Maxwell has felt more free than ever—with her and because of her. Believing nothing can become more with the girl he saw for a fleeting night—imagine his surprise when he discovers that his new arranged bride is none other than the same girl he spent a vulnerable night under the stars with.

If you've read the other books in the Orchid series, you know we've already met Maxwell but in this book it feels like we meet a whole other side of him—and not as the cold billionaire everyone knows him to be but a very vulnerable person who pretty much has given up any hope for a love he can never have.

While I enjoyed the concept, and storyline, my only thing really was how when there is push/pull in a book, I don't like it when the heroine is pull pull pulling (or is it push push pushing?) for a majority of the book and the hero doesn't do the same (afterwards ofc). I LOVEE when the heroine is the one pulling for a majority of the book but then finally gives up and its the hero's turn to pull them back after they know what a huge mistake it was. But it felt like we didn't get enough of that and it was Belle constantly pursuing Max. But otherwise I really enjoyed this book, it was the perfect spooky "Halloweenish" read!

Thank you so much to Victoria for reaching out to me for this ARC and your team for sending me Max and Belle's wedding invitation in the mail—I was absolutely in love and was squealing when I saw it.

You know those stories that give you a sixth sense, hinting they’ll wreck you emotionally? That’s exactly how I felt when I began reading this one. But what unfolded was so much deeper and richer than I could have imagined. It’s a tale where love is cherished with profound reverence, only to be lost in an instant and then resurrected with a force that defies time itself.

Maxwell and Belle—was it love at first sight, or was it a timeless bond that had always existed? Their arranged marriage, initially a mere convenience, evolves into something hauntingly beautiful amidst gothic vibes and an age gap that adds complexity to their connection. This has become my top book of 2024, and I devoured it in less than 24 hours despite its length.
Maxwell, the eldest son of the prestigious Anderson family, carries the weight of a curse. Annabelle, desperate to save her grandfather’s company, ends up with an arranged marriage with Maxwell, hoping to reclaim its former glory. What begins as a practical arrangement transforms into a journey neither of them expected, beautifully woven by Victoria’s exquisite storytelling.
With my own cultural beliefs reflected in this narrative, I felt an overwhelming resonance. It left me in awe. This book is a profound exploration of fate, coincidence, and the timeless essence of love. It captures what happens when hearts truly surrender, and it does justice to the idea that some bonds are destined to endure through the ages. This is a story you absolutely cannot miss.

Check CWs before reading (on author's website)

Let me preface this review by saying it's going to be incredibly hard to write this without giving spoilers. It's also going to be hard because this book pulled me through the wringer emotionally about a hundred times - but this is a testament to Lum's writing. One of the sensitivities is a warning I needed to heed, but Lum wrote it with such care, speaking from a place that was clearly close to her, which made it so much more powerful - and was a cause for many tears, but also much hope.

It's been almost 24 hours since I finished reading, and I'm still thinking of Maxwell and Belle - as well as Emma and Silas. I honestly didn't know where Maxwell's story would take us, especially with hints of the curse dropped throughout Ryland's previous book. I was at times thinking how could something so clearly supernatural sounding be woven into a contemporary romance. Then Lum delivered this fantastic (and chonky, I won't lie) story filled with every single emotion you can think of, as well as plot twists and a suspenseful sub-plot that I honestly did not see coming.

At its heart, this is a story about soulmates, and I love the nod to that. I'm a sucker for anything soulmate/fated mates, be it PNR, romantasy or contemporary romance, so this truly ticked all the boxes for me.

The initial meeting of Maxwell and Belle - Silas and Anna - was wonderfully written, and I love that there was that secretive side to Maxwell, even if we only got a glimpse for a moment. His character truly hit hard for me; the mental health representation he shows was phenomenally written, and I loved seeing the growth of his character to the point he realised that maybe he did need help with it. The poor author was on the receiving end of many unhinged messages as I read, but I distinctly remember sending her a message saying this moment of revelation for Maxwell was monumental. His growth, in general, was amazing over the book, especially with the moment he gave into his emotions despite his feelings towards the curse. He's such an intricate character, and oh boy, does he have a dirty side hiding deep down. I was living for the filthier scenes, and Lum did not disappoint, pushing in a few kinks for Mr. Anderson to share with Belle. The chemistry was fire, the tension palpable, and the mixture of slow burn, "we shouldn't" and forbidden was absolutely delicious.

Belle. Oh, Belle. I saw so much of myself in this character, and I think that's why it hit so close for me. Whilst our struggles are not 100% the same in terms of diagnosis, Belle and I are going through very much the same. As stated earlier, Lum treated this issue with care, dignity and kindness, but it also felt I guess good to be represented this way in books. I kept reading because I wanted to see her get the happily ever after she and Maxwell deserved, and whilst there were twists and turns throughout the pages, they got there.

I won't lie, there were a few times I was scared the happily ever after wasn't possible, but the hard-fought journey between our star-crossed lovers would not be halted. This book has it all - laughter and tears, romance and spice, a great girl gang, and a fantastic boys club. There's mystery and suspense, plot twists and gasp-out-loud moments.

I've never had a book hangover before, but again, testament to Lum's writing when I say this is the first one to give me that experience; I cannot stop thinking about Maxwell, Belle, and their love story.

Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. These are my honest thoughts that I have provided voluntarily.

Thank you to the author for the eARC opportunity. This review is voluntary & honest.

Y’all when I tell you I have fallen in love with The Orchid series & Victoria’s writing & characters, I mean it! It’s like every book in this series turned up the angst more & more on each one & if you know me, then you DEFINITELY know I am an ANGST LOVER. So yes, I did devour all three of them.

Belle is an FMC that feels like she is a true embodiment of sunshine. And it is not in the sense that she would be happy & perfect 24/7 because that is not Belle. She has the kindest of hearts & so much love to give & is also ready to be a light to guide those who may need it. Her caring nature goes hand in hand with her fierce protective side. She is the kind of close friend you want, the partner you hope for & the person you hope to become one day. I adored her!

Maxwell, one of my top favorite tortured heroes. This man has spent his whole life haunted by a curse that has torn his family’s hearts for generations. It has made him become a shadowed version of who he wished to be as he grew up. It made his world different shades of gray when his inner artistic side longed to see the world in color. It was beautiful to see him open up & show the hidden sides to himself. A side that is open to falling in love & fighting to keep it. This man is also possessive in the most delicious of ways. No matter how hard he tried to prevent his feelings, Maxwell became enraptured by Belle’s light & let it fill him with the kind of love he had been waiting for. His journey was not an easy or kind one, but the ending truly filled my heart with happiness.

Maxwell & Belle have a love that transcends time & defeats all odds. What began as another adventure added to Belle’s year of yesses turned into an unforgettable night, where two souls that have yearned for one another for many moons finally reunite. As always, it was also amazing to see the side characters that are pivotal members of their friend group/family. You’ll love this if you’re a lover of cameos of couples from previous books in a series.

If you’re a lover of a contemporary romance with soulmates, an age gap arranged marriage of convenience, a protective tortured hero with a sunshine to his grumpy with spice & angst slathered on top, this one is for you! I loved this one & I have a feeling you will too! 🩵

This has become a must read author for me! She is thriving in this series and when the heart surrenders emphasizes that. This book had a touch of the supernatural still mixed with a lot of reality in an intriguing family curse that spurs our hero to enter an arranged marriage. Maxwell is a closed off billionaire with extreme anxiety disorders. I loved this billioniare had this perceived flaw and how he worked through it especially with his lovely wife Belle. Belle is sweet with a huge heart for everyone. She's beyond patient and is such a fitting partner for Maxwell even as he pushes her away to avoid triggering the curse. This had spice, suspense and was elegantly romantic. I'm hooked on this author and series

🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

When Hearts Surrender was so different from the previous books in the series, yet it also still fit in this Orchid world. I really loved the gothic and spooky vibes that surrounded the mysterious Anderson curse. This is a beautiful, angsty, slow burn romance about a love that is so much more than you would expect. I can't say too much in the review because I don't want to give anything away. Just know that Victoria Lum is such a phenomenal storyteller, and I was captivated by their romance.

Maxwell Anderson is the older twin and head of the family company. He has lived out of the spotlight since he suffers from severe anxiety, but he has stepped up as the face of the company since his twin has left his role to be a professor. He suffered from a bad panic attack in front of the press, and now he needs to go through with his arranged marriage to help with his image. He meets a beautiful woman one night while he was street racing, and they spend the entire night talking, and they have an immediate connection. Unfortunately, Maxwell ends the night by pushing her away because he can not fall in love with anyone due to the family curse. Maxwell also has to have an arranged marriage because of the family curse where any woman the first born son falls in love with will die. He truly believes in this curse since his first wife died in an accident, so he plans to have an arranged marriage with someone he will never fall in love with. However, things get complicated when he discovers his future wife is the same woman he met.

Now, they are living together in his gothic mansion that is surrounded in mystery. Maxwell really tries his best to push her away because he knows he is falling for her. Some weird things are happening around Belle and the mansion, adding to the gothic vibes. Belle and Maxwell really felt like soulmates, and I was dying for them to just be together.

One thing I love about Victoria's books is that she slowly builds the romance with such longing and slight touches. She really dives deep into the characters, and they both grow individually, as well as a couple. There are so many sweet and romantic scenes, and the spice was also next level. I also really loved the anxiety rep in this book.

Thank you to Victoria Lum for providing the ARC.

Best one yet!

I cannot express to you, the reader of this review, how much I loved this story!
I don’t have the adequate words.

This story has the perfect blend of gothic vibes meets old 1940s movie vibes as well as some mystical vibes.

So many vibes! There’s definitely some awesome undertones in this book that I don’t want to spoil or point them out because it is more fun to be surprised.

If you get emotional when reading have tissues at the ready. Im not even joking. So many tears.

This is one of those books you collect multiple copies of (special editions and the such) because you love the story that much. Maxwell & Belle are forever 😍

Victoria gives us another great story full of angst and so much love.

🖤Billionaire romance
🖤Age gap
🖤Arranged marriage
🖤Anxiety rep
🖤Family curse

Maxwell and Belle meet one random night and have the most amazing time together. At the end of the night, they know that that’s all it will ever be - just one night.

Neither expect to see each other again; and boy do they get the shock of their lives when they find out they are arranged to be married.

What is the problem you ask after proving that they have a strong connection and insane chemistry together? Maxwell cannot fall in love or a generational curse will k!ll his wife. So he must stay away from Belle and not fall into temptation.

Easier said than done.

Maxwell and Belle stole my heart and brought all the angst and emotions! I was rooting for them so hard throughout this book!! I wanted them to end up together so badly.

There are twists that I wasn’t expecting and they added a suspenseful aspect to the story.

I loved seeing all of the siblings and I can’t wait to see who Victoria will be writing about next!

This is a story about how Belle is put into an arranged marriage with Maxwell.

Belle is an extremely independent daughter of a well-known family who is trying to have her own life aside from the title only to find out that her parents have set her up in an arranged marriage because they have spent all their money and made bad investments so they are about to be broke.

Maxwell is the eldest of the Anderson family who is seen as extremely important across the entire country. There are no pictures of Maxwell taken and he is known as a bit of a short-tempered man that tends to leave every event as early as possible. Maxwell and his family also believe that there is a curse upon their family that every Anderson man will have his first love die within a year of them exchanging "I love you"s

Belle and Maxwell end up meeting without knowing that this is the plan and both use alias names. So when they meet up for the first time to hash out the agreement for the marriage, comes as a shock to both of them that the stranger they had been so smitten with is now there soon to be spouse. This complicates Maxwell trying to avoid a marriage of love so that he doesn't watch another female in his life die. This is the precipice for our story.

Victoria Lum did a really good job of creating these two characters in a way that You could understand where they were coming from even though most of us are not at the privilege level that either of these people technically were. She also does a good job of taking a story and weaving it in a way that it had romance, mystery, little bit of thriller action going on but still a full well thought out story.

I had a suspicion of that ending but was constantly guessing throughout if I was right or not so it was fun to find out what was going on.

ARC Review

I discovered Victoria Lum when I met Ryland Alexander, COO turned English professor, in When Hearts Collide. His twin is Maxwell, CEO of the family business, who, due to his crippling social anxiety, has sequestered himself at the family estate.

At the start of the story, we learn about Silas Anderson, the first Anderson to emigrate to America in the 19th c. and the woman with whom he fell in love - Emma, the maid who laid a curse on the wives of the first born sons of the Alexander family. Haunted by the death of the women in his life, including his mother, Max agrees to an arranged marriage, determined to remain hard-hearted and aloof. However, he meets Belle, his wife-to-be, and their connection is deep and instantaneous, drawing us in from the very start.

The dichotomy between Maxwell’s desire of and devotion to Belle versus his sense of duty, as well as Belle’s love for him and longing for a family are palpable. Lum also captured the love and loss of Silas and Emma, weaving the details of their relationship into diary entries scattered throughout the book.

Her writing is passionate and powerful, pulling you into the story until you can’t help but feel the emotions of the characters - your heart breaking when their hearts break, their joy becoming your own. Lum’s talent of entwining the history, the romance, the mystery, and the bombshell of a plot twist is fiercely satisfying and will leave you with an intense book hangover. The key to breaking out of the slump this beautifully written book will put you in is to simply read another Victoria Lum story. Thank you, Victoria Lum, for gifting me with this ARC and bringing me further into your world. I love it here.

Where do I even begin with my review ! I will say this was my first book by this author and my dear friend had recommended me to her work so I knew it was going to be good.. I didn’t know it was going to be THIS GOOD!!!
The 500 odd pages flew by like I was reading a novella I just couldn’t put it down and when I had to (because life) I was trying to unravel the mystery the entire time in my head itching to get back to the story!

This is a love story across generations for Silas and Emma who couldn’t be together and who were torn apart for their love. Placing a curse over Silas and his family throughout generations to come until Maxwell and Annabelle are married through convenience/business arrangement but who cannot be allowed to fall in love lest the curse… curse them!

Maxwells character deals heavily with mental health, anxiety and PTSD which is beautifully handled throughout this book as it is a complex medical diagnosis that affects people differently. I loved that his character did not shy away from his awareness of his own “monsters” and in the end he does accept that he will need external help to get through it. I love an aware king 👏🏻 oh did I mention there’s plenty of “where my wife” annnnnd.. swoon!

Annabelle. Sweet Annabelle, she is not here to hear about the curse. Curses be damned she loves her man! and heck I admire a fierce fmc who knows what she wants and won’t let a thing like a multi generation curse (and some pretty damning evidence) come between her and her man AND she’s going to save all the dogs in the world and no one get in her way about it! 👏🏻👏🏻

Annabelle’s character comes with her own complex medical condition that could be triggering so please read the triggers beforehand.
I felt the author was very respectful (very demure) about Annabelle and her diagnosis. It felt well researched, explained and talked through between the characters in a really real way. Okay I’m crying again!!

When hearts surrender is book 2 in the series and although I haven’t read book 1, this book really held up on its own but also Maxwell is a hotty twin and book 1 is THE twin. So start there and come back when you’re ready for another thrilling, rich story telling adventure for the heart and soul.

Honestly could have quoted the whole damn book but here are my favourite quotes:

“I want to tell her how she’s an indelible part of my life, how she’s the sunshine in my never-ending night, the spring in my barren winter.”

“The monster will not murder my husband, not if I can help it.”

“I’m not in control of myself right now. I’m losing my mind over you,”

“I just hope… if the curse is real, if it needs to take a life, please take mine instead.”

“I’m not hiding in the shadows when you’re shining your light on me.”

“I’m fighting for us, but I should’ve asked her to join the fight.”

“Hope is the dream of a waking man… and I-I’ll see you in your dreams…”

A romantic suspense novel complete with vibes of the paranormal and hints of reincarnation and the atmospheric setting of a gothic-like stately house, Wraithmore Abbey with its secret rooms and a curse that spanned nearly two hundred that damned the first-born son of the Anderson family. If they ever found true love, then the object of their affections would die, something that had come true repeatedly over the years. When Maxwell Anderson, after losing his first wife found himself having to marry again, he swore he would never love his arranged bride, but he didn’t know he’d already met her and fallen for her.

The balance between romance and suspense was spot on in When Hearts Surrender with the overall story based around the arranged marriage between of two of New York’s elite families, something the hero thought would circumvent the curse that had damned his family and taken generations of women including his mother and first wife but when a series of accidents, each more serious than the first befell his new bride perhaps the danger lay closer to home. Maxwell had been determined to keep his new bride at arms length for her own protection, but he hadn’t counted on being so attracted to her as she brought light into his dark life, tempting him like no woman had before. He was such a complex character with severe anxiety issues and a conundrum to boot. He was a billionaire businessman and an artist with an inner bad boy struggling to get out, something Belle found intriguing when they’d first met. Belle had her own issues. She’d married Maxwell to save her grandfather’s fashion business and because she wanted a baby not knowing he was the mysterious man she’d met recently. To begin with, their relationship was mainly Maxwell pushing her away with Belle bursting into tears which did get a bit frustrating as it went on, and I wanted to scream at Belle to show some spirit and when she finally did, Maxwell’s bad boy came out which lead to some steamy interludes between them even if he pulled back from her after each encounter. But not even the cold-hearted businessman could deny true love.

Maxwell and Belle, I have no words but so many words for this couple! I absolutely loved this book! I knew from the moment this book was being hinted at at the end of When Hearts Collide that Maxwell and Belle would be my favorite book from this series!! I was not disappointed at all! This story was full of angst, mystery, gothic vibes, and souls mates; what's not to love?!

Maxwell Anderson is the eldest son which comes with a very tall order of responsibilities then *whispers* there's the family curse?! For generations it is said the eldest son cannot marry for love or their love will pay the consequences with their life. So Maxwell is determined to not to let things repeat themselves. He's seen the curse take too many of his loved ones from him and his family to believe in said curse. So what will Maxwell do when he finally meets someone who makes him feel alive and whole for the first time in his life? Accidents start to happen leaving him to feel déjà vu but can he stop the curse from taking the one ray of sunshine away from his dark and dreary soul?

Belle has it all or at least that's what she's told by her parents. All Belle wants is to save her grandfather's business, help animal shelters become no k!ll shelters and create her own family filled with love. Though it seems like that may never happen unless she agrees to an arranged marriage where her dreams can come true but at a cost. The one rule being she cannot fall in love with her husband and with a haunting sense filling the manor, she must uncover the truth. Can Belle change her future husbands mind, show him the wonders of there being reds in the blue-greens of atrovirens or will she have to accept the terms for the arrangement?

There is a lot of heavy topics mentioned in Maxwell and Belle’s story, so please check trigger warnings! For a list of potential areas of sensitive content, please visit: https://www.victorialum.com/sensitive...

Maxwell and Belle's love story begins with Silas and Emma in 1860. I love that their souls continue to search for each other lifetime after lifetime even though their story did not have a happy ending. It's romantic and bittersweet. Maxwell and Belle are in an arranged marriage but their meet cute happens as they hide their identities under false names during a street race. Maxwell's family is cursed where the eldest son cannot be in love with his wife or tragedy will befall on her.

Belle is a fashion designer who does not believe in the curse. She desperately wants to have kids despite having fertility issues. Maxwell has been dealing with social anxiety his whole life and tries to be brave and selfless for everyone, since he is the CEO of his family's company. Maxwell gifts Emma's locket to Belle. Belle also helps him with his anxiety.

Though the relationship starts off as an arranged marriage and Maxwell vows to not love her, the more he resists, the faster and harder he falls for her. I love how Maxwell helps Belle with her fashion designs when she hits a block, and she tells him that hope is missing in his painting. Belle is his little muse. She's always been vocal about her love for Maxwell but he is in denial, trying to cheat the curse. The demanding ways Maxwell tells Belle that she'll give him an heir will have every romance reader in a chokehold.

Maxwell is willing to divorce the love of his life so that she can't be harmed by the curse and even takes a bullet for Belle. Belle finds Silas's missing journal. The curse is broken finally after Belle is kidnapped and they discover the true perpetrators of the murders in the family. The dreams and visions Maxwell and Belle experience are their past memories as Silas and Emma.

There are so many "my wife" moments in their love story, and I love it all. The way Belle announced to Maxwell that she's pregnant by altering the painting he did of her had me swooning.

Spice: 3

Tropes:
Touch Her and Die
Arranged Marriage
Family Curse
Grumpy x sunshine
age gap
billionaire romance
Dual POV

When Hearts Surrender was the mystery/thriller romance I did not see coming! I'll be honest, I thought it was going to be a spicy billionaire romance, and while it was, it was also much more than that!

Belle and Maxwell come from respected families. However, both Belle and Maxwell have secrets... which lead to them agreeing to an arranged marriage. The love story was cute between the two of them. Definitely one where Maxwell falls first and harder but because of his secret, he is convinced he can't fall in love with Belle.

That's great and all but for me, the true winner of this story was the mystery/thriller aspect. I was obsessed with it. Maxwell's family has been cursed. The eldest son is fated to never in fall in love with his wife- if he does, it dooms her to death. Maxwell likes Belle and he'll be damned if he falls in love with her, terrified of losing her. Belle, of course, doesn't believe in the curse.

What I liked about this part of the story was thinking, OHHH Do we have a real curse? How will they break it? If it's not real, how do we explain all the deaths that have happened to this family? Is there a culprit? Who's the culprit? Okay no spoilers, but my guess wasn't correct HAHA And I love that!

ALSO, what I loved about this story is it's a true soulmates story for me. There's another love story going on concerning Maxwell's ancestor. And it's heartbreaking, and beautiful, and makes me believe that certain souls are meant to be and they'll always find each other again, in the next life, over and over.

ARC REVIEW

4.5/5 ⭐

I absolutely loved this book. I already knew Maxwell's book was going to be the absolute best. This is the third book in the series. And it started with the infamous 'Curse'. If you have read the previous books you'll know the dilemma Anderson men lived in all their lives.

Since it's an ARC I won't spoil it for you. But let me tell you this book will make you feel. No doubt it's a marriage of convenience but also it's so much more. The book is all about the intense emotions angst, love and guilt. It's about the loss of love, separation and reunion.

Maxwell is the eldest of Anderson siblings. He lives in the dark, somewhere deep in the shadows. Although he's the CEO of the company but he has never been the face of it until now, since Ryland found his one true love Millie and got back to teaching full time, the onus is now on him.

Maxwell's character is written very well. He's broody, intense and gives the dark vibes. He's an artist by heart but also suffers from anxiety or social anxiety. He lives his life like a recluse who has accepted his fate whatever it may be. He knows if ever he gets married it won't be for love.

Belle on the other hand is a 24 year old woman who is struggling with proving her worth as a designer in her own company and who also wants to save her grandfather's legacy. She is a kind hearted woman who works at an animal shelter out of spite, so that she can hold reigns of her fate until she can't.

She and Maxwell met accidentally one night and they both felt something for each other. But since Maxwell knew he can't marry for love he left her, only to be tied to her in an arranged marriage. When he got to know that she was the chosen bride everything changed for him.

I loved reading Maxwell and Belle. I loved the witty banter between the siblings, the group chats and the twists and turns in the story which made it more relishing. And you'll get to know about the infamous curse, how it started, how it worked and how it will end.

PS: the book deals in the sensitive issue of mental health and infertility so read it at your discretion.

Victoria is such an emotional storyteller. You can always expect a well written story with many different moving parts and all the angst with tons of emotions. This was such an interesting take on the arranged marriage trope. What made it different from Maxwell & Belle was that they had actually met before and had a really amazing night with lots of chemistry between them. They find out later that their parents have arranged for them to be married.

Maxwell has such a hard time with not only the arranged marriage, but being around Belle. He is the eldest son, the holder of the curse. That means he cannot fall in love with his wife or he risks losing her. He already saw this happen with his first wife and the last thing he wants is it to happen to Belle who genuinely cares for. The thing is, part of the deal involves an heir, so we all know what they have to do to make that happen. The more they get involved in a physical relationship, the more the lines are blurred and the harder they find it to say that they will not fall in love.

When everything starts to really heat up, all the twists and turns will have you on the edge of your seat. I was shocked, like jaw dropping. I actually thought I was figuring things out, nope completely wrong! I really recommend this book if you love the angst and the spice and those shocking moments that leave you speechless. The only reason I couldn’t give this 5 stars was because I wanted more building on Maxwell & Belle’s relationship emotionally and not just physically.

Well this book started out completely tragic but ended up being really good. The prologue was really sad but set the tone for the rest of the story. The curse aspect really added to the story and made it even more interesting.
I loved that Belle stole her dog from the pound in order to save him from being put down and I loved that she named him Silas.
It was sad what happened to Maxwell's first wife and the events that led to her death. I loved the street race scene, where Maxwell and Belle first met each other. They spent the night together just hanging out and talking and I loved that scene.
When they meet again to discuss their arranged marriage and find out who the other actually is, I hated how he acted towards her. I get the reasoning behind it, with the curse, but still it was sad. I loved how he had her room painted in her favorite color for when she moved into his mansion, and surprised her with Frida Kahlo paintings because she was her favorite artist.
I loved what he did with the animal shelter Belle volunteered at, it was a sweet gesture.
I loved that the story had a gothic feel to it, with the curse and all that. But at the same time, it had a mystery too. As you get through the story, the truth comes out about both the curse and the mystery aspects.
This book had a major plot twist I never saw coming and that's all I will say as to not ruin the book. I loved Belle's surprise for Maxwell at the end the most.

I have the privilege of being on Victoria’s street team and reading her books early and I’m so damn glad because she seriously doesn’t miss a beat! If you haven’t read any of her books or The Orchid series specifically you need to! This is the 3rd book, Maxwell and Belle’s story. It is perfect for the spooky season with the gothic and haunted vibes. Maxwell is part of the elite Anderson family, the eldest son born to a curse of the first born Anderson boy. If he falls in love he’ll lose her in a tragic way. The family believes in this and Belle does not and they both fight for each other and their love and it’s a beautiful story with a touch of supernatural vibes which I enjoyed immensely. It has a lot of angst and the spice is spicing and holy hell Maxwell is top tier and is up there on my list of favorite book men of all time. I love this book and the series!

That’s how Victoria Lum wrote When Hearts Surrender.

But I must confess. I lied.

I said twice already that I was a Steven girlie.
I’m not.

I’m forever a Maxwell girlie.

This was one of the best books I’ve read all year. Maybe ever. Brilliant.

Thank you @authorvictorialum for this ARC. Thank you for letting me read these words. To dream (with) this story.

After reading Ryland and Millie’s story I knew that Lum was a great author but this book has shown that even more. The plot, the spice, the character banter and connection, everything about it was flawless.

The curse says that if a first born Anderson son marries and falls in love with a woman she is bound for death, and that has haunted Maxwell his whole life, and watching him torture himself trying not to fall for his bride was *chef’s kiss*. The angst, the heart racing twists, all of it was well done.

Did not see that twist coming at all, but definitely was intrigued with the plot and the curse of the Andersen family. Despite that, I love how Maxwell and Belle initially met and how they come to find themselves in an arranged marriage (so here for this trope!). I felt bad for Maxwell and how tortured his sweet little artist soul is over the whole marriage and how he feels for Belle.

Set to release on October 9th! Thank you to Victoria Lum for the ARC of this book!
