During his 25 years covering baseball for the Daily News, Bill Madden met heroes and scoundrels, such as Joe DiMaggio and Darryl Strawberry and witnessed stunning upsets and miraculous victories, such as the 1984, ninth inning, two out home run by Boston's Dave Henderson to win Game 5 of the ALCS over California - and he wrote about them all. He covered World Series, All-Star games, trades, hirings, firings, scandals, debuts, record-setters, Hall of Famers and the loss of legends. Bill My 25 Years Covering Baseball's Heroes, Scoundrels, Triumphs and Tragedies is a collection of Madden's most memorable stories, compiled and narrated by the famed News baseball writer, complete with black and white photographs from the archives of the Daily News.
Not a bad read, provided you're a person who like reading compilations of newspaper columns published into a book. This was a little different in that for the most part, this covers Madden's adventures covering New York sports -- concentrating mostly on the Yankees (with a few Mets stories thrown in).
As a life-long Yankees fan, it great. The book had some other area Madden covered in his adventures with the New York Daily News, including the infamous baseball strike, but a major of the book is focused on the Yankees -- a wonderful look back at the days before Jeter and Mariano -- of people like Bob Lemon, Lou Pinella, Don Mattingly, Catfish Hunter and all the behind the scenes events.
Madden is a wonderful writer and has produced some wonderful books - including his 2010 biography of the late George Steinbrenner. But this collection of columns definately shows Madden's talent as a newspaper columnist. You don't have to be a strict Yankees fan to enjoy this book.
