It started with poetry. When Peter E. Fenton was having a difficult day, he would put pen to paper and dive into a world of imagination. None of these poems were published. They were kept in a book on a shelf for future reference. A way of looking back at a time and place in life.

But poems led to short stories...tales often told in letter form to amuse friends during their long summers away from home working jobs in theatre.

And then twenty-four years ago he met a composer and writer and they became life partners, and they got the ridiculous idea that perhaps writing musicals and plays would be fun. And so they did that. While his partner wrote on over twenty projects, Peter participated in four of those projects, and these plays were produced across the country, won awards and some were even published.

But life can't all be "play". There was also some work to be done, in this case a 42 year relationship with the Royal Ontario Museum, where Peter spent his time in palaeontology doing collection management and going on expedition in remote locations including the Canadian Rockies, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

When the time came to step away from the fossils at the museum, a new passion took hold ...the desire to write a longer narrative...a book... a gay romance. He wanted to write something that would draw on many years of living, loving and exploring the world.

And so with the kind support of his partner, he began writing his first novel, and a publisher expressed interest, and in the spring of 2022 The Woodcarver's Model was released and was a four time nominee in the Goodreads M/M Romance Readers’ Choice Awards.

That was followed by the release of Mann Hunt in the summer of 2023, which was also nominated in the Goodreads M/M Romance Readers’ Choice Awards. The book has been translated into German, Italian and Spanish.

Last summer, he released Hoodoo House, which is the second part of the Declan Hunt Mysteries series and is now also available in Italian and Spanish. The book was nominated for a Goodreads M/M Romance Readers' Choice Award.

In the fall of 2024 his youth novella Not Not Normal published by Lorimer Publishing came out to critical acclaim (and another Goodreads M/M Romance Readers Choice Award nomination)

The third novel in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series entitled The Burnt was released in August of 2025 It came out in Italian and Spanish editions as well. It was recently nominated for a Goodreads M/M Romance Readers' Choice Award in the Mystery/Whodunnit category.

The final book in the series will come out in the summer of 2026.

Hoodo House is the second book in Peter E. Fenton’s The Declan Hunt Mysteries series. This book could be read as a standalone, but it will be more enjoyable reading the series in order. This is a contemporary mystery/suspense story with a romantic element (the mystery is the book’s main focus). It’s told from a third person point of view, and has a happily ever after for the main characters, Declan and Charlie. As always, ensure you review the content and trigger warnings to decide if this book is right for you. Hoodo House has warnings for violence, blackmail, and the death of a minor character. Note that this list may be incomplete. Please take care of yourself while reading.

This book brought me back to when I was growing up and didn’t want to put my mystery book down! Peter has once again wrapped us up in an intriguing mystery set in the Badlands of Alberta. I love that this book has a Canadian setting and is written by a 2SLGBTIQA+ Canadian author! It was great being back at Declan Hunt Investigations with Declan and his investigative assistant Charlie. As the investigation at Hoodoo House continues, they must process their feelings and intentions towards one another. I think they’re absolutely adorable, and Charlie is such an incredible character. We really got to see his computer prowess in this story. The cast of side characters was great, and I found myself with a soft spot for Henry and Mrs. Cameron by the end of the book. If you like a good, Canadian mystery, consider checking out the second book (after you’ve finished Mann Hunt of course) in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series!

I received an ARC of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Charlie Watts has been working for Declan Hunts Investigation for some time now. He was there to run the business effectively and it looks like its all working as finances have been improving. With feelings getting in the way he and Declan came to an agreement, no mixing business with pleasure.

The Alberta LGBTQ+ Business Association has voted on the Annual Local Hero Award and Declan was chosen. Well, not really, because of an incident, he was next choice over a city council member. Declan, not to keen on the idea of attending the ceremony, Charlie talks him into it. Not only does Declan help the Association, but it’s a great way to get publicity for the business. When Charlie provides the details on the black tie event at the Lambda Ball at the Palliser Hotel, he brings up that the honoree should bring a date. After a little tease, he invites Charlie to go with him.

Charlie is more than excited but Declan still is cautious as they both had come to the decision for their relationship to be business-only.

At the evening of the award ceremony, Charlie finds himself helping Declan through the heart-felt speech and running interference for him. Seems that Roger Honeyfield can’t resist Declan. Then Declan is approached by a Sinclair Yamada from Mount Temple Press an important Canadian Publisher. The Mount Temple Press provides a charitable trust at a retreat, Hoodoo House. The publisher provides a support service and stipends for worthy writers who generate novels for the publisher. But there’s been trouble at Hoodoo House, Mr. Tull, one of the writers has been found dead and there’s a missing manuscript. Besides the new investigation, Charlie thinks the evening ended well and then it didn’t.

Declan finds himself at Bar-None where Mickey keeps an eye on him as he starts to sabotage himself. He believes he doesn’t deserve good things. He even winds up at the Greek, Calgary’s biggest gay bathouse, where Mateo calls Mickey. It seems Declan also has often spent time looking at a picture on his desk, of a young boy and then Declan starts coming up missing. Charlie doesn’t know what to do and it leads to jealousy and suspicion.

Declan and Charlie will take on the case of murder, at the one-hundred and five year old Hoodoo House. They will meet the permanent fixture, Gramma Carol Cameron, house matron who does so much to keep the house up and running and the guests happy. Then there’s, thirteen year old Henry Quill, who stays with Carol. Gramma Carol has taken care of Henry for a long time as her ward, but she thinks of Henry as her son. Carol home schools Henry and he very seldom leaves Hoodoo House. He’s smart and wiser than most his age and seems to know all the secrets of Hoodoo house. He loves his comics, especially “Momrath and the Slithe”.

As Charlie and Declan dig deeper into the investigation, who of the the former and current residence of Hoodoo House are hiding secrets? What of Declan’s secrets and even Charlie has one of his own?

So excited that Peter E. Fenton brought Charlie Watts and Declan Hunt back with “Hoodoo House” the second installment of “The Declan Hunt Mysteries”. The story is filled with suspense and danger as there’s ghostwriters, authors from past and present, love affairs that can’t be revealed and surprises.

Besides the rocky relationship between Charlie and Declan there’s a host of characters that keeps this a story to get immersed in. Henry Quill is a very vibrant and enthusiastic character and I really liked him. There are special woman that the author brings out: Carol Cameron, Charlie’s best friend Carrie, Sgt. Kaci Bowen of the Drumheller RCMP and Declan’s Stepmother Gwen and some I won’t mention because I would spoil the secrets.

“Hoodoo House” is an excellent mystery, with a creepy old house and a young boy that knows all it’s secret places. The first book for “The Declan Hunt Mysteries” is “Mann Hunt” that introduces Charlie and Declan. I was thoroughly entertained with both books in this series and can’t wait for Peter E. Fenton to bring more from Charlie and Declan! Well done!

This series just keeps getting better. I love how Charlie and Declan’s dynamic is evolving, how secrets come to light, this particular mystery was fabulously laid out, I thought o saw it coming but I really did not - I enjoyed all the characters, particularly Henry and I agreed completely with Charlie’s moral dilemma . I also really like the way the author writes, it’s extremely tightly paced and gripping, no lag whatsoever! Really recommend this if you’re a fan of romantic mysteries. Can’t wait to start the next one.

I loved the first book in this series and this was a solid entry in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series. This was a goofy MM romance with mystery themes and likeable characters. I really liked getting to know Henry. Who doesn't love an adorable sidekick? Looking forward to what is next for this series.

Peter E. Fenton's Hoodoo House is a terrific read. Since it's the second book in Fenton's 'Declan Hunt Mysteries' series, I'm glad I'd read Mann Hunt, the first volume, before reading this one.

While Hoodoo House is definitely a stand-alone read, there are enough references to the plot of Mann Hunt, that it is worth your time to start with volume #1.

Everyone is keeping secrets in this mystery novel by Peter E. Fenton and her does a great job of doling them out very slowly with a lot of excitement going on around them. The pacing is fast and entertaining but the romance is still going slow although it really picks up near the end. There are also some interesting side characters, both good and bad and some that are a bit of both. As a Canadian I like that Fenton has set it in our mutual country and as much as I am enjoying the romance between Declan and Charlie I couldn’t help falling in love with young Henry because the way that Fenton has written him reminds me of me as a kid.

I got a copy of this book from GRR and this is my honest review

Declan and Charlie are back. They are both dancing around their feelings and whether they could be together and work together.
In the meantime, they are asked to find a missing computer following the death of a local writer.
I quite enjoyed the mystery and the progression of Declan and Charlie.
Not sure if this is the end of them but I wouldn't mind another book.

I want to start by thanking the author and the publisher for providing me with an advanced reader copy of Peter Fenton's Hoodoo House, the second book in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series. For full disclosure, Fenton and I both publish with Pride Publishing, but I got this review opportunity from Gay Romance Reviews. As always, my review reflects my own opinions and impressions.

Plot Summary

In Hoodoo House, we follow private investigator Declan Hunt and his partner Charlie Watts as they tackle the mysterious death of Malcolm Tull, a writer who was found dead at his desk in Hoodoo House. Initially ruled as a suicide, Malcolm's editor raises doubts, pointing to the missing computer, the mislaid manuscript, and Malcolm's character as reasons to suspect foul play. The investigation leads Declan and Charlie to Hoodoo House, a place filled with secrets and potential danger. As they dig deeper, they uncover layers of blackmail, hidden relationships, and even murder, all while navigating the evolving dynamics of their relationship. The suspense is palpable, keeping the reader on the edge of their seat.

Analysis

Fenton's skillful writing keeps the reader engaged from the first page to the last. The mystery is intricately woven, with enough red herrings and plot twists to keep even seasoned mystery readers guessing. The setting of Hoodoo House, with its eerie atmosphere on the edge of Alberta's Badlands, adds a gothic flair, with its looming shadows, creaking floorboards, and mysterious whispers, that enhances the story's tension and intrigue.

Character Development

One of the standout aspects of Hoodoo House is the deepening relationship between Declan and Charlie. Fenton portrays their romantic and professional dynamics with a nuanced touch, making their interactions feel authentic and relatable. The tension between their personal and professional lives adds an extra layer of complexity to the narrative, drawing the reader in. While some reviewers found their miscommunication frustrating, I felt it added to the realism of their relationship.

Pacing and Structure

Hoodoo House is a fast-paced read. The narrative moves briskly, with each chapter revealing new information or twists that propel the story forward. This novel is not just about solving a mystery; it's about understanding the characters' motivations and the lengths they will go to protect their secrets.

Final Thoughts

Overall, Hoodoo House is a superb addition to the Declan Hunt Mysteries series. It combines a gripping mystery with well-developed characters and a richly atmospheric setting. While reading the first book is not necessary, it certainly enhances the experience. However, it's important to note that the book contains instances of blackmail, hidden relationships, and murder, which might be triggering for some readers. For fans of mystery and romance, this book is a must-read. I eagerly await the next installment in the series.

Thank you again to the author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book. Hoodoo House is a captivating read that I highly recommend.

A house, and a book, full of charm

Fresher, original and just so much better than most MM detective fiction out there. There’s just no other way to describe this series.

Book 2 opens with another murder and another case for Hunt investigations. Following an award ceremony, Declan is approached by the editor of the murdered writer asking him to retrieve a missing computer. What follows is a mystery involving secret rooms, hidden laptops and murder that probably isn’t what it seems.

As with the previous book, characters and dialogue are perfectly on point, making this book an absolute pleasure to read. It’s amazing how, having read other authors, I have become conditioned to accept poor, lack lustre writing. So when a writer like Peter E Fenton comes along I question why I have tolerated such mediocre writing when the likes of Peter Fenton have been out when there championing quality literature all this time. As readers we need to be more demanding of quality, and start expecting nothing less than the exceptional standard of writing we see here.

With fabulously written characters like Henry, an eccentric 13 year old boy, and the unintentionally hilarious clerk at Rosebud Inn, William… or was it Fergus(?!?) we are once again treated to some incredibly funny scenes that just make this book a joy to read. And I’m so glad we get to read this from multiple points of view (despite what some other readers have complained about) as this makes the books feel fresh and more alive. Being inside Henry’s head is a delight, even as he ponders the problems of the world over his morning coffee. I just couldn’t get enough.

This is a gentle mystery that is incredibly engaging, with some thoroughly enjoyable scenes. The mystery element far exceeds the romance and gives the book a solid structure making it a real page turner. The romance is a nice addition, and when it’s there it’s equally engaging but you don’t miss it when the author focuses on the detective side of the story. And this is mainly due to the wonderfully written side characters. They just make this book such a pleasure to read. Before you know it you’re half way through, which is quite sad really because it means you will be through it in no time at all. And with so few books in this authors repertoire, I know I’ll have to wait a while before I get a chance to visit this world again.

This is a great book to read, I just wish it was a little longer. And that’s probably my only criticism with the book, that the ending comes far too quickly. It very much felt like the author had to hurriedly wrap it all up and we never got to see what happened to many of the characters. Well we did but only during the epilogue… and even then it was just in passing comments between Declan and Charlie. But I can forgive the author that because the book was a lot of fun to read and the mystery was quite an interesting puzzle… especially when seeing it all through the eyes of Henry as he bravely fought crime in his homemade gimp-suit.

Veronica – ☆☆☆☆
When the writer who lives in residence at Hoodoo House dies in questionable circumstances, his editor hires Declan to find the author’s missing laptop containing a manuscript and potential blackmail material.

I was excited to read HOODOO HOUSE to see how a potential romance between Charlie and Declan was going to play out, but it was the mystery at Hoodoo House and a very clever 13-year-old boy named Henry that stole the show. I was surprised by a few of the twists and turns in the mystery and every new revelation had me turning the pages to find out more.

I loved the scenes told from young Henry’s point of view – they were so engaging. It was fun watching his excitement in helping Charlie and Declan while revealing the history and secrets of Hoodoo House. There is a great scene where Henry is left on his own in the house for the first time and it was a blast watching a 13-year-old have a little fun and freedom and get into a little danger.

While working the case, I was happy to get to know more about Declan’s personal life and to see a little romance between him and Charlie, they make a great couple. HOODOO HOUSE was a great story. I can’t wait to see where to next for this pair and to experience more Declan Hunt Mysteries.

I’m fully invested in this series following private detective Declan Hunt and his assistant Charlie Watts as they get to know each other and figure out their feelings while solving some mysteries.

One of the fun things about a series following a couple is getting to see them develop, grow, and navigate life. And these two are really great guys.

Declan has had a slew of life experiences that have led him to becoming a PI with a focus on helping the LGBT community. It’s made him cautious in his relationships. Charlie is a much more open person and is excited to have found something he’s passionate about. They are perfect for each other. True compliments in personality and skills.

Together they work to solve a mystery based in a Bates-like house in rural Alberta, where it turns out the victim has no shortage of enemies!

Along the way we get a classic ‘there’s only one-bed’ night stay, a precocious young man who’s eager to solve the case, lots of secrets, and of course, two men who finally start to figure things out between themselves.

It’s a highly entertaining story. I can’t wait to see where their relationship takes them and what cases they find themselves sleuthing.

Four stars, rounded up from three and a half.

I found Hoodoo House, the second book in Peter Fenton’s Declan Hunt Mysteries trilogy, quite un-put-down-able at times, and that’s a fine thing in a mystery novel. I also got caught up in the developing romance between Declan and Charlie, rooting for them to get their act together. I was annoyed when they spent some time not talking to each other about topics that they really should have aired; I generally find that irksome as a driver of plot. I also found Henry, the teenager who lives at Hoodoo House, unconvincing at times—acting young for his stated age or having an internal voice that didn’t quite ring true for me. Neither of these reservations stopped me enjoying the book, and I saw a few crumbs artfully dropped at the end that have me intrigued for book three.

I also really appreciated a couple of places where Fenton subverted genre conventions. As my fellow readers know, these are both almost unheard of in their respective genres, so they were a nice breath of fresh air.

A recommended read for fans of mystery novels and/or own-voices lgbtq+ fiction, especially those who like a bit of romance thrown in with the mayhem.

I received an ARC from the author (thanks!).

Hoodoo House (Declan Hunt book 2)
By Peter E. Fenton
Pride Publishing, 2024
Five stars

I’d let this book slide by me, but bought it when I ordered book 3. Peter Fenton’s Declan Hunt series is set in Calgary, Alberta, and has some of the best characters. Of course Declan Hunt, proud and wounded and honorable, is working alongside his new assistant, Charlie Watts, who is adorable and smart and trying very hard not to let Declan know what a crush he has on him. But Henry Quill, the twelve-year-old who knows Hoodoo House better than anyone, is possibly my favorite character of all.

Is it a murder? Is it a suicide? Is it really a bad thing? An arrogant author is found dead at his desk in Hoodoo House, a writer’s retreat set up under the foundation of an eccentric and reclusive romance novelist. The suspicious death of Malcolm Tull is being handled by the local police, but Declan and Charlie are called in by the late author’s editor. That’s when things begin to go sideways.

Meanwhile Charlie wants to be professional, and so does Declan. But hey, folks, it’s a romance AND a mystery. We know what has to happen. That doesn’t make it easy or without plenty of angst. Fenton knows how to handle all of it, while giving us vivid settings and appealing, interesting, relatable players in this complicated drama. So far, he’s batting a thousand, and I don’t doubt book three will be just as much fun.

I would like to thank GRR for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Ahhhh Hoodoo House was sooooo good!!! Declan and Charlie settle into both their work and their physical chemistry in this installment of The Declan Hunt Mysteries!

This was another compelling mystery with a few moving parts but nothing super complicated. When it came to the emotional side to things, I found that the characterization had a bit more depth to it this time around. There was some exploration of vulnerability in both Declan's character, but also from the lens of a 13yo boy who lived at Hoodoo House which i thought was endearing and moving.

Secrets and superheroes created a multifaceted read that i enjoyed a lot!

I would have loved a touch more to Charlie and Declan's growing relationship in this though. There's attraction and affection here for sure, but i'm not sure that this narrative developed their heart-eyes enough to the point of ilys, but that could just be a me thing.

Overall i thought this was another fantastic book in a series that promises to be one i will enjoy for ages to come! Very excited for The Burnt up next because it looks like there'll be a fiery twist to the body count, as well as Declan and Charlie's romance finally getting to the sexy-heat phase of their love story! I know it'll mostly be closed door/fade to black level of spice but i'm already doing the shimmy for these babes! eeeeeee can't wait!

The second installment in the series brings readers back into a world of mystery and secrets...but with a little less of the gripping tension found in book 1.

The premise is promising: a writer is found dead at his desk, with both his laptop and manuscript missing. The remote Alberta setting is perfect for the mystery and a cast of odd characters. Hoodoo House - the actual house, not the book - is a character in its own right, providing hidden rooms and tunnels that lend to the story. The plot unfolds with the necessary twists and turns, and stays true to the noir-like feel of the first book.

But...something is missing. The mystery has its moments, but there doesn't seem to be as much intrigue or urgency that is found in the first book. Because of that, I found that some of the big reveals didn't have as much impact as they could have. Like the first book, I wouldn't characterize this as a romance either, though there are certainly more romantic elements. But Declan and Charlie's relationship feels undercooked. I was hoping for more depth and connection, so what should have been a turning point for their relationship feels like a half-finished story arc.

I'm still invested enough in the series to continue reading, and I'm hoping book 3 finally brings us the HEA for Charlie and Declan.

This book is an very good example of my favourite combo of mystery and MM romance.

I got this as an ARC copy on the promise of an honest review. I would say my review would be a 4.7 so I have it 5 stars. The two characters who fall in love are Declan Hunt and his assistant Charlie. Declan has to get his therapist to see how important it is to be open and honest with Charlie and Charlie accepts the truth with no questions as he ha fallen in love way before.

The mystery had to do with a House to the northwest of Calgary, once a hotel and brothel that had been used by an author whose first book became a huge seller but while being pushed to write more had a nervous breakdown so the publisher set up a foundation to own the house and hire a writer in residence to continue to ghostwrite books in the series.

The current writer in residence is deceased under suspicious circumstances and the Hunt agency is hired to discover the latest manuscript and the computer that held some porn files with three men, each taken in a dungeon (kink) and the author was threatening each of them with blackmail. Charlie plays and outsize role in a)finding the computer and narrowing in on the third individual being blackmailed. To say more would be a spoiler.

This is the first book I have read by this author but as someone very much into this genre, I want to read and further books he writes.

3.5 stars An okay book to read, and maybe needs to be read in order for Charlie and Declan's first meeting which I'd missed.
A okay start to the book as the prologue has Mrs Cameron getting the day started in the kitchen with breakfast for Mr Tull. This was a first read for me with this author.

Mr Tull, 45 years and a writer, had been found dead at his desk.
Charlie was helping Declan run his office smoothly as his assistant, but felt much more for the man which he'd kept secret. I liked Charlie in this as he seemed to do the majority of the sleuthing, which little Henry got on board with too.

The story progresses into a blackmail and murder case which Declan and Charlie must solve.
It also maybe heartbreak ahead for Charlie with his crush on Declan.

This has some narrative in the prologue that didn't get me drawn into the story with the switching povs.
I didn't read the first book in the series so Ive missed the Declan/Charlie first meetings. Unrequited love continued for Charlie which I'd guessed from book 1 which they work through in this one. A few dramas with danger and they get the mystery solved. A good book unfortunately something stopped me from loving this, ie narrative telling.

I received an advance reader copy and this is my honest thoughts of the book. #GRR

Declan Hunt and Charlie Watt are called to investigate the mysterious death of Malcolm Tull. Malcolm was a writer in residence at Hoodoo House and has been found dead at his desk of an apparent suicide. There are things missing, such as his computer, and he was not the type to have taken his own life. It is beginning to look as if his death was not suicide and there are a plethora of suspects. As Declan and Charlie investigate, more than a few secrets come to life and some of them may affect Charlie and Declan’s romantic relationship.

Another excellent story in The Declan Hunt Mysteries, Hoodoo House is filled with secrets and surprises. With the death of Malcolm, there are only two residents left, Mrs. Cameron and her ward, Henry. These two are intriguing characters and make the story so much richer. There were many possible perpetrators of the death of Malcolm, and they are all rather fascinating. Charlie’s talents with a computer also shine through. A great plot, two wonderful main characters and a host of side characters make Hoodoo House a book well worth your time. While not necessary to read the first book, it will make this one so much better. I cannot wait to see where Charlie and Declan go from here.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and this is my unbiased opinion.

**********Contain Spoilers**********

I’m new to Peter E Fenton’s work and I’m looking forward to reading more. I really enjoyed this book and thought that it was a good addition to the Declan Hunt Series. After the suspicious death of Hoodoo House’s resident writer Malcolm Tull who wasn’t a pleasant man and was actually blackmailing three different men at the time of his death. Declan and Charlie are approached by Malcolm’s editor to search for Malcom’s. missing computer as it has the unreleased manuscript and an explicit video that Malcolm was using to blackmail said editor.

I really enjoyed meeting Hoodoo House’s residents Ms Carol and her ward Henry. Henry definitely shone through the pages as he was such a delight. Declan eventually opens up to Charlie about what he’s been hiding and who the mysterious Michael is. They agreed that they want to see where things could go romantically between them but have decided to take things slow, so only time will tell. I’m looking forward to reading The Burnt next, as well as more books from Peter E Fenton in the future. I’d recommend this book and author to others.

******I received a complimentary copy of this book through GRR. I would still happily review this book even if I purchased it myself. My thoughts and feelings about this book are completely unbiased******

Rating: 2.5/5 - I enjoyed the mystery part of the book but the relationship portion fell flat for me
🌶️: 1/5 - there was 1 semi-explicit, intimate scene

TLDR: Mystery was good. Romance wasn't great.

We left book one with our main characters being together. And we start book two with them having decided that it's better if they are just coworkers. Which none of them is actually happy with but they're doing it anyways. This whole romantic part of the plot I found really annoying. I don't care for the will they won't they trope. The mystery portion of the story was good. There were lots of suspects and possibilities. There was another mystery outside of the murder. And all of that was good. The characters were still fun and engaging. There was some silly quirkiness that made me laugh. But I'm really here for the romance and that didn't hit in this book. TW: The annoying tendency of the author to ignore prep and lube got even worse in this book.

Ultimately, I'm not sure if I would recommend this book. We'll have to see if book 3 makes book 2 worth it.

Thank you to the author and Gay Romance Reviews for the advanced review copy of this book. My opinions are my own.

This was my first read into the Declan Hunt Mysteries Novels. I was not disappointed in the least. The book held my attention and I often found it hard to stop reading at times. I wanted to carry on and find out what would happen as the story progressed. I was hooked! You will be too when you read this book!

The story and the characters have a way of pulling you into their world. You experience the different tales and ventures that Declan, Charlie, Henry, Ms. Cameron, and others go through. Just when you think you might have the mystery figured out, a wrench is thrown in the plot line and blows your theory all apart. That's exactly what Hoodoo House will do. It will keep you on your toes and guessing until the very end.

One of the pluses for me is that the book wasn't filled with a tirade of sexual scenes. Not that I don't mind them in the storyline, but they can sometimes overtake the story and make it rather boring. I want a book with substance, that keeps me hooked, and provides some enticing play here and there. This book offers just that.

A big kudos to the author for such a great read. I will be seeking out more of your work. I highly recommend others do the same. :)

Sweet and thrilling is the best way I can describe 'Hoodoo House.' Anything I could say specifically about the book would be a spoiler. If you haven't, read the first in the series, 'Mann Hunt.' Excellent reads, but I enjoyed the second book considerably more having read them in order. The author's ability to weave together fantastic who-done-its showed me he'd the real deal for well-written, thoughtful stories. Peter, the author, was nice enough to respond back when I asked when I asked if there's a third book in the works. There is! Even as a full-time busy novelist, when it's released, I'll stop what I'm to pick it up and devour it with delight.

Peter's writing style is pleasantly refreshing. A nice departure from my own laced with expletives and exclamation marks, I'd allow and encourage teens to read him. Watching evening news is more damaging to young ears. Queer, straight, gay or questioning, there's something in these novels to delight everyone, even me, as grouchy as I can be when something tears me away from my writing desk, I await eagerly the chance to savor and enjoy these beautifully developed characters one more time. Peter Fenton makes them feel like family. (Henry, the young teenager in the story... I'd love to adopt that kid.)

Sooo... I may have skipped the first book by accident and I am not necessarily sorry (because of the romance subplot). It accounts for part of why this book felt a bit... strange. Can)t put my finger on it except my feeling, like... most books I read follow a certain formula/rules no matter their genre and this book kind of strayed, not too far but far enough to feel it.

The resolutions felt a bit strange and again, no idea why. The detective plot was well-made, complex yet straightforward (with some detective/mystery stuff, they get talking about organizations and introduce 30 side characters for whom we get a lot of useless info that I am supposed to remember for that one scene where it matters) and this one just worked nicely.

The PI bit also made it different. The procedures where different - the whole plot was different and the police was more of a tool / distant help /possible hindrance because only police books have police officers as the Good Guys.

I feel like I sorta liked it but was too distracted by that feeling of wierdness to connect properly to it and since I didn't see Charlie hired and the two of them dance around each other, the romance had less of an impact - positive impact, since I skipped the drama/angst of the first book.

Hᴏᴏᴅᴏᴏ Hᴏᴜsᴇ • Peter E. Fenton
The Declan Hunt Mysteries • Book 2
Declan • Charlie

𝘏𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘭. 𝘋𝘦𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘩𝘢𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘮𝘣𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘩𝘦.

After reading Mᴀɴɴ Hᴜɴᴛ I was anxiously awaiting Hᴏᴏᴅᴏᴏ Hᴏᴜsᴇ and I was happy that I read it.

After a man turns up dead, Declan and Charlie are hired to help retrieve his laptop which contains information that multiple people are after and will stop at nothing to get their hands on.

Declan and Charlie's case was interesting, and I was kept guessing until it was solved and was unable to guess the results of the case correctly. Declan and Charlie have been dancing around each other for the better part of both books and the tension between them peaks and they finally give in to temptation.

Hᴏᴏᴅᴏᴏ Hᴏᴜsᴇ is the second book in the series but can be read as a standalone and is more of a mystery with a side of romance which means it was a very slow burn. The book is written in the third-person and from multiple points of view which at times got to be a little overwhelming.

All and all, Hᴏᴏᴅᴏᴏ Hᴏᴜsᴇ was a good read from beginning to end and I look forward to reading more books by Peter E. Fenton in the future.

My favorite characters in this book are Charlie and Henry.

This mystery involving Charlie & Declan involves the murder of an author and a missing computer. Henry is the one who found the body.

Secrets abound. Everyone involved in the case has a secret they have hidden. One that has the potential to ruin them or someone they love.

Declan has a secret he is withholding from Charlie. This secret though is helping the detective. Unsure why he is hiding it. Could be his upbringing. A difficult relationship with his father. A man who wants to ensure Declan displays no weakness. The police force not protecting gay officers.

His secret is Michael, a therapist who deals with trauma. The session involved Declan revealing his feelings. His fear of how Charlie will react. Charlie and Declan’s relationship is progressing! Declan admits both his feelings and fears.

Monarch rears its ugly head again. Hopefully this will be wrapped up in the next book!

It all came down to secrets. Once these started to be exposed it caused a domino effect that changed several of the characters lives. Each still keeping these events secret.

This is the second book in the series and reading of the first book is a must. Declan and Charlie are headed to the outskirts of Alberta. They have been hired by Simon Yamada to find Marcus Tull's missing laptop. Marcus Tull was the resident writer at Hoodoo House who has recently died and whose death is under investigation. Simon hires Declan and Charlie and tells them the missing computer holds Marcus' recent manuscript and an incriminating video of Simon that Marcus filmed and was blackmailing him with. Along the way we meet Mrs. Cameron, the housekeeper of Hoodoo House, and her ward, Henry. Henry especially becomes a favorite of mine. Once they find the laptop, Declan and Charlie discover plenty of suspects who might have wanted Marcus dead. I really like that we got to see Charlie using his computer skills and that we find out more about Declan's past. Declan finally starts opening up to Charlie which helps to progress their romance. This book kept me guessing until the end on who might have killed Marcus. I really hope that there is going to be another book in this series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.5 stars

Hoodoo House is the second installment in the Declan Hunt Mysteries series. I hate to say it, but the whodunit is somewhat lackluster. Plus, the elements of a budding romance I find engaging happen off-page. You’d think a story with a suspicious death, BDSM elements, and blackmail would be pretty entertaining, but there is little about the suspects or their motives I found interesting. Hoodoo House begins three months after Mann Hunt, and in that time, Declan and Charlie have apparently fallen in love, but are keeping things professional. With the story starting in medias res, there’s no build-up of emotions and tension as their feelings become deeper. All that occurs between books, so it’s mostly the “should I, shouldn’t I” of it all. The writing is solid, but to me there is a vibrancy missing that was present in the first book.
