With telling understatement this very funny book takes an irreverent look at such topics as Bahamian names, food, celebrations, superstitions, politics and views on health and medicine. This is a must read. You won't stop laughing.
This is #54 in my read a book from every country project (Bahamas).
I struggled to find a book about the Bahamas by a Bahamian writer, and I was pleased when I came across this one. It's a light take on an auto-ethnography of "authentic" Bahamian identity. The book covers daily life, language, and other aspects of Bahamian life distinctly separated from tourists' experience. It's a quick and illuminating read for someone like me who is an outsider. Given all of that, the reason I gave it only 3 stars is mostly because it oversells itself. The subtitle refers to it as "a hilarious look at life in the Bahamas." It's a light take, but maybe not as funny as the author thinks it is.
How to be a true-true Bahamian is hilarious. As a Bahamian, the work is more funny that it would be to a foreigner. Glinton-Meicholas covers a mix of Bahamian experience; from everyday life to Bahamian creole. It's a quick read, that presents its as light but covers so heavy topics.
Excellent book. It helped with my writing of A Teacher's Love Story and Skeeter Hawk. It gave me a better understanding of the Bahamian people. A Good Read!
