Book 49 of 2024- Hold on to your Dreams
Author- Ruskin Bond

“But I could write a little. In the end,it was the words that took over and provided me with my real escape,a permanent place one, secure and happy in a world of words.”

If you’ve been following me for a while, you would know how much I love Ruskin Bond and how many of his books I’ve read to date. I always get excited about his new releases. "Hold On to Your Dreams" is his latest book, written in a letter style for young readers, but as he mentions, it's truly for everyone.

All the usual Ruskin Bond elements are here—his love for old-school things, mountain and hillside walks, book references, and his joy in the little things, like cooking, writing, and finding love. This book captures these elements beautifully, making it a delightful read for any Bond enthusiast.

The illustrations and the book's font and design are captivating, adding to the overall charm of the book. It's a visual treat that complements the heartfelt and insightful content.

There are many takeaways from this book. One of my favorites is the reminder to keep your creative self alive and always find joy in the little things. Bond's reflections on life's simple pleasures and his gentle wisdom offer comfort and inspiration.

"Hold On to Your Dreams" is more than just a book; it's a source of encouragement and a reminder to cherish the beauty of everyday moments. Whether you're a long-time fan or new to Ruskin Bond's work, this book is a treasure that will leave a lasting impression.

Reading Ruskin Bond’s 'Hold On to Your Dreams' felt like receiving a heartfelt letter from an old friend, one who understands life’s ups and downs and reminds you not to give up. Each write up is a gentle nudge, a quiet assurance that no matter how difficult the road gets, your dreams are worth holding on to. Bond’s words, so simple yet profound, weave through the everyday struggles of relatable characters who find hope and joy in the smallest of victories. It’s like he’s sitting across from you, sharing stories that inspire you to keep going, to believe in yourself, and to see beauty in the ordinary.

This book doesn’t preach; it feels like a warm embrace, reminding you that failures are just lessons, not destinations. Bond’s lyrical prose and his knack for bringing life’s quiet moments to the forefront make it all the more personal. As I turned the pages, I couldn’t help but feel that he was speaking to me directly, urging me not to lose sight of my dreams, no matter how far away they seem. It’s a book you will want to keep by your side, to turn to whenever you need a little hope, a little courage, or simply a reminder that your dreams are always worth chasing.

"Be kind, my friends. Be wise and strong, and do not take from anyone their dream, their song."

"Let's just say that some sounds are worth hearing- bird song and the rustle of spring- and some are troublesome, such as loudspeakers relaying political harangues or wedding music floating into a small house."

Full of poignant art and gorgeous illustrations, exciting quotes from the author and heartfelt words in the form of a letter rather than a conventional form of memoir or journal, this cute little book is a letter from the beloved author Ruskin Bond to his young friends, and the older ones.

On the eve of his ninetieth birthday he shares his heartfelt letter, therefore making this book an epistolary book, the one format that I absolutely adore. And this book is adorable as well. This book is very personal and feels like a conversation with the author, not preachy, but insightful.

The author also chooses to speak about the fascination of the human species for the destructive effects of gunpowder, the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the Ukraine and Palestine.

The author shares timeless life lessons, encouraging the readers to learn from mistakes, embrace empathy and hold on to our dreams. Talking about friendships, love, loss, frailties, solitude, his own books and poems, anecdotes from life, companionship, his pet cat Mimi, and much more, this book is delightful to read. A hopeful, positive and comforting read that's also a collectible.

This book, whose byline reads "A Letter to Young Friends," is written for the young reader – people who are either in their teens or in their early twenties. While I do not belong to either of those groups, I could not help but be immersed in the book, and I must say that I truly loved the whole experience.

Hold on to Your Dreams is a beautiful book, one that you will keep coming back to like you would visit an old friend. This book has a comforting feel like garam pakoras on a rainy evening or a hot cup of coffee on a freezing cold morning. A highly recommended read to all his fans, but also to those who love reading and writing and everything bookish.

A Conversation with an Old Friend in the Hills

~ A review of “Hold On to Your Dreams” by Ruskin Bond

I was on the train to Jodhpur when I read the book. But somehow, reading it transported me far from the rattling tracks and to the quiet living room of an old friend, Ruskin Bond, in the hills of Mussoorie. I could almost see myself sitting in front of him, quietly listening to his little anecdotes, soaking in his words of wisdom.

He tells me that words are his lifeblood, that he lives for the world of words. And as I read, I felt an unexpected joy: the joy of witnessing how much he enjoys writing. He says the words are his escape from reality.
And every reader, I think, would raise their hand high and shout,
"Me too, my friend, me too!"

Through his pages, he reminded me of how many great writers I have yet to discover. So many stories to explore, so much wisdom still waiting in between the lines. Life feels too short; there’s so little time, and so much to read, to learn, to achieve.
Time, it’s what we take most for granted.
We delude ourselves into thinking we have plenty of it, only to watch it slip away quietly, unnoticed.

My old friend puts it perfectly:
“We must seize it by the coattails and hang on for all we are worth, because it can so easily slip away and leave us alone on the beach, looking for seashells.”

Then he tells me to be kind.
"Kindness lifts us above the level of beasts," he says. And how true that is. As human beings, we have the rare gift of conscience. We can choose to be gentle, compassionate, and kind to every living being.
The world would be a much better place if we were just a little kinder to each other. A world where there would be no need for nuclear weapons, no thirst for dominance, only understanding.

He then speaks of dreams, not the fleeting ones we forget by morning, but the old daydreams that once lit up our childhood. The dreams that kept you awake at night.
He tells me to hold on to them tight.
And it saddens me a little. Because I seem to have lost mine.
Maybe I left it somewhere along the way and misplaced it between deadlines and distractions.

I need to find it again.

It won't be easy. I might need a searchlight, a bag full of hope, some good luck, and a lot of strength.
But I won’t give up.
My dear old friend told me not to.

"Keep going," he says, "and along the way, there are many pleasant diversions."

And as the train neared Jodhpur, I closed the book with a full heart.
Somehow, I felt lighter like I’d just had a long, quiet talk with someone who truly understands.

Someone who lives for the world of words and helps the rest of us remember how to dream.

This is an intimate and inspiring collection of reflections, crafted as a personal letter from the beloved author. Bond directly speaks to the reader, sharing the story of his life, his knowledge and ordinary life events, starting from birth and ending at old age, which gives the reader the intimacy of friendship rather than the anonymity of a spectator.
.
Unlike what is common in a memoir, on the eve of his ninetieth birthday Bond uses a letter format in the book which makes his work rather interesting to relate to. The clarity of his ideas and the energy that radiates from the text warms the heart, brings joy to the reader, young or old! The representation of the lovely quotes and the illustrations are amazing highlighting Bond’s outlook on life. He also stresses the importance of knowing how to enjoy life and enjoy desires that are simple.
.
Be it an enduring affection for a strawberry milkshake or for a fine mountain hike which invites the readers to be content with the few happy moments. A major theme of the book as suggested in the title is that one should never relinquish one’s dreams, even if those are simple daydreams that shape our thinking positively. Bond’s words are some sort of comfort and encouragement to stand out during troubled circumstances in life are conveyed as a warm embrace. This is a heart-touching narrative of his take on life, the usual moments of joy, his comforting and encouraging sayings.
.
Hold On to Your Dreams is more than just a visual treat; it’s a source of encouragement and a reminder to cherish the beauty of everyday moments. Whether you’re a long-time fan of Ruskin Bond or new to his works, this book will undoubtedly leave a mark on your heart. It is a timeless collection of learnings that urges us to embrace empathy, learn from our mistakes, and hold on to our dreams through life’s ups and downs.

Every year, on the occasion of his birthday, Mr. Bond engages with his fans by releasing a new book in which he generously shares the wisdom and experiences he has gathered over the years. It's a remarkable tradition that has earned Mr. Bond a devoted following. This year, his latest book, 'Hold on to Your Dreams', is a heartfelt letter to his young friends, encompassing individuals from infancy to old age. The book is a testament to Mr. Bond's unique ability to offer guidance and inspiration to a wide range of people, making it a timeless and treasured piece of literature. Mr Bond writes,
"Hold on to your dreams. Don't let them go."
This simple yet powerful statement encourages perseverance and determination. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining hope and striving towards one's aspirations despite challenges. This message inspires the readers to keep pursuing their goals and not to give up, even when faced with obstacles.
As I delved into this captivating book and was on page 5, I stumbled upon a few lines that begged to be cherished. This trend continued onto the next page and the next, each one adorned with words that spoke to me. As a connoisseur of fine books (covers, papers, printing, fonts, and colours), I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty of this book. Its pages, with a texture so exquisite, beckoned to be caressed for hours on end. Refusing to taint its splendour with a highlighter, I made a conscious choice to transcribe every sentence that resonated with me. This decision proved to be a stroke of genius, for upon finishing the book, I realized that I had transcribed nearly every word into my diary. Each word held immeasurable value, and every thought was akin to a soothing balm for the soul.

“Putting down my thoughts and reflections in the form of a letter comes readily to me than using the more formal medium of a memoir or the egoism of a journal.”

- Ruskin Bond, Hold on to your Dreams.

Ruskin Bond makes an observation on the distinct behaviour of animals and humans with his cat, Mimi being the focal point. There are times where he abruptly stops writing when his mind drifts off to engineering ammunition and annihilation of mankind by other humans. Mr. Bond expresses his despair and composes himself when he thinks about omelettes at Mall Road.

Indulging in this read made me nostalgic about his previous works. “For our thoughts are invisible and can be only captured by the written word”, he writes while describing the works of his favorite writers that made him witness their version of foreign lands.

Thriving on intimacy of solitude and despising the intrusive nature of noise, Ruskin Bond acknowledges the presence of grass plaguing different parts of the earth.

“Build castles in the air and put a foundation under them”, Ruskin says while depicting how childhood aspirations sustain during dreary days. Like his other books, this one too is a short read but bursts with flavours of life making you undergo a cycle of emotions. Armed with his repertoire of comfort words, this letter is a heart-to-heart conversation with his readers.

The font size is very vintage, giving us an intimate experience of feeling his words. The illustrator Pearl D'Souza has done a fabulous job in translating his words for the visual medium.

On the eve of his 90th birthday, Ruskin Bond pens down a letter for the readers in the form of 'Hold On To Your Dreams'. Mr. Bond pens down a heartfelt letter that emerges from his experiences where he reflects upon love, longing, friendship, companionship, partners, goals, achievements and life in general.

This letter feels like a conversation with any favourite grandparent near us who we cherish dearly and like to talk to in the evening with a cup of tea! And it gives the same vibes - can be easily finished in half an hour, is not peachy at all, comes out of the experience and makes you feel a little better about yourself and your life, and gives a new perspective for things around us and how we can perceive them better.

The illustrations inside the book by Pearl D'Souza support the writing beautifully and every line that I found I needed to highlight was already illustrated and it just elevated the overall reading experience. And reading the afterword in Ruskin Bond's handwriting gave it the perfect ending!

Overall, it's a book that I highly recommend if you are looking forward to reading something that can change your mood instantly. It's something that I know I'll read again and again. And as Mr. Bond says in the dedication itself —
"This letter is for older readers, too.
If it's hot, enjoy the shade.
If it's cold, enjoy the sunshine.
But don't stop dreaming."
— this book is for each of us and our dreams.

Book - Hold On To Your Dreams: A letter to young friends

This book is a letter to the young as well as the older readers. Written in letter format, Ruskin Bond talks about his childhood, boyhood and old age days.
From the simplest things such as making a omelette, enjoying the sunshine, his first novel, roads of Mussoorie, his cat mimi; to some serious things like 'is the human race worth preserving' , the damage the human species is doing to the planet he talks about them all. Through these, he gives his readers a lot of messages. One of them being to be kind to all and hold on to our dreams.

Even the most serious topic is communicated with so much simplicity. The book also has black and white illustrations and drawings too which you can colour also. I must say the illustrations are super cute. The book is also filled with many inspirational quotes.

A book with simple anecdotes and amazing analogies and way to just tell all the readers that no matter what don’t give up on your dreams dearies.

It’s such an important lesson to understand. Repeatedly Mr Bond has also mentioned that I am no one to advice, each to its own but the lesson here I guess is this one only. So often we find ourselves advices our friends, family members even before they asking for one. I guess most of the time our dear friends or people close to us just wants someone to listen ! I am working on that, I know I have come a long way , I have many more miles to go before I can term myself as a good , patient listener.

Our dearest author has talked about so many wonderful things in life about his life as well in such a heart warming way , I bet when you will read this book all your heart is going to do is my dil goes hmmm… and a big smile throughout.

The print is in cursive , it does not get more magical in that. It feels like a personal note from Mr Bond to all his gentle readers. Sorry for the caption being a little bridgertony, I like the way lady whistledown writes!

Dare a say I am a fan ! ☺️

I throughly enjoyed the book and can’t wait for you all to read yourself and tell me how you liked it.

Hold on to your dreams by Ruskin Bond

I had read - How to live your life by Ruskin Bond and loved it. This is quite similar in the format of the book with creative illustrations and wisdom, which made me sure that I was going to love this one too. And I did!
If you're looking for a short book to enjoy with a cup of coffee, Hold On to Your Dreams by Ruskin Bond is the perfect choice. This book feels less like reading and more like having a warm, comforting conversation with a grandparent.

Bond’s signature style is evident throughout – his love for the old-world charm, quiet mountain walks, references to books, and joy in simple things in life. He says the simplest of things but the way it is said, makes it a masterpiece.

I loved the beautiful illustrations and imaginative designs. The visual appeal makes it a great gifting book as well, that perfectly complements the author's heartfelt reflections.

There is comfort in his words and sheer encouragement to keep dreaming, no matter where life takes you. Whether you’re a long-time Ruskin Bond fan or discovering his work for the first time, no matter of what age, you will take back something from this one!

Our beloved Ruskin Bond turned 90 this year and Hold On to Your Dreams celebrates his beautiful journey as a writer.

In 'Hold On to Your Dreams', Ruskin Bond talks about the lessons he has learnt from his life. The letter opens up on the premise of a well known proverb, 'to err is to human' and takes us on a joyful ride through various instances from Mr. Bond's life where he picked up something to cherish for the rest of his life. He encourages young readers to hold onto their dreams, inculcate kindness, and appreciate all the wonderful things they already have as humans.

Beautifully adorned with artworks, doodles, and pages by Pearl D' Souza, the Bakeshop Light typeset along with so many interesting author recommendations and quotes by Shakespeare, this one feels like a gentle breeze on a hot day, a soothing music that calms your nerves, and a solace that lovingly tucks your unsettled mind to a peaceful sleep.

I have always found it difficult to express my opinions about his books, maybe because I never wanted to. His books somehow never made me judge. The stories are never too much off the top or under the bridge. They emanate just the right amount of balance. The smooth flow of his penned words is something that gets me every single time. They don't seem to take any turn that might unsettle a reader's peace of mind. They just flow, never bother the eyes and the mind who are reading them. Maybe that's the solace his books promises, that us readers looks for in every book we read. Thank you for everything Rusty!

The legend, Ruskin Bond brings this beautiful book 'Hold On To Your Dreams' which is his personal message to his readers, both young and old to always have an optimistic look towards life.

The author talks about how it is important to appreciate the little things and enjoy each moment of life. Even at the age of ninety, he says, he loves a good strawberry milkshake and enjoys his writing be it fiction or non-fiction.

A message that comes across very well in this book is to never shy away from your dreams, and when Mr. Bond talks about dream, he even includes the daydreams we see with our open eyes. The whole book, as I mentioned earlier is a very positive one and a great read for all ages. Coming from a writer like Ruskin Bond, these are real words of wisdom that readers can imbibe in their lives.

Hold On To Your Dreams is a book that acts as a rainbow after dark, gloomy weather. I see a lot of people posting sad quotes. Reading these makes me feel sad for no reason. This book did the opposite for me. I don't have any big plans or hopes. I am a "go with the flow" person. However, reading this book inspired me to write down all of my childhood dreams and store them safely for a better future. There were multiple quotes that struck my heart and made me contemplate life.
Ruskin Bond's words are like a reassuring hug from a loved one after a hard, exhausting, and stressful day. It's thatcozy blanket that your mother wraps around you on a cold winter's night. This is my second book from him, and the fact that I enjoyed both of them enough to give them five stars indicates that I will definitely read more of his work.

There are some books that provide peace to your heart. ‘Hold On To Your Dreams - a Letter to Young Friends’ is just that kind of book

This book is a diary entry where an elderly Ruskin Bond is giving advice to the fellow young readers. The font and illustrations are also chosen in a way that the reader doesn’t feel obligated to follow the advices, but to understand them. And what a remarkable use of words.

This book is like a warm hug from a grandparent to his or her grand child. It is a very light hearted read and can be read in a day. I would recommend to read it peacefully without any hurry. Actually, come to think of it, this book will be an amazing airport read. Pick this book as your next travel companion.

I don’t know where to begin with this book. It reads like a diary entry where Ruskin Bond speaks directly to us. Giving us his years of experience, finding the beauty of everyday. There’s a very specific vibe his books give, that only his books can give and it’s the fact that it’s written by someone who has a level of calmness inside him. A calmness that can only come with living in the mountains. This book felt like he had sat me down next to him and was telling me stories. What a heartwarming experience.

Hold On to Your Dreams by Ruskin Bond is a non-fiction book he wrote on the occasion of his 90th birthday (btw happy belated birthday Sir Ruskin Bond)

In this book, he shared about his experience and wisdom that he learnt. This book is a heartfelt letter to a friend with whom he shares his experience from infancy to adulthood to old age. I love how he can summarize everything so well, be clear with his thoughts, and be inspirational to readers of his wide range and age.

This book is full of beautiful and inspiring quotes and wonderful illustrations. I love how Ruskin Bond sir used a letter format to write about his life/story rather than going for a traditional way, memoir, autobiography or biography.

I love how this book was so easy to get into and felt very personal. It almost felt like the letter was not written for a "friend" but Ruskin Bond wrote this letter to me. The author wants readers to be inspired through his words and hold on to that dream.

Overall I enjoyed reading this book and I recommend this book to everyone around me as well.
