“As the Knight of The Last Horizon, I challenge you.”

The Last Horizon has already sown new legends across the galaxy, tales of monsters defeated and worlds saved. For better and for worse, their reputation is spreading.

Their enemies have taken notice.

On Karosha, the Perfected gather fleets crewed by inhumanly flawless soldiers. In the Galactic Union, the secretive organization known as Solstice pulls strings in the shadows. And in the depths of Dark Space, after years of silence, the ravenous D’Niss begin to stir.

Raion Raithe, Knight of The Last Horizon, sees these threats as a chance to redeem himself. He will stand against the danger, and he will stand strong, no matter what it costs.

His friends are counting on him.

3.5 stars. A clear step down from the first two books due to a meandering plot. But still a fun adventure, and I look forward to continuing the series.

The Last Horizon and its crew have no lack of problems. Enemies and Zenith Devices are stirring throughout the universe. The enemies of the Titan Knights, the D'Niss, have re-entered the Universe. The last remaining Titan Knight Raion Raithe, a Titan Knight from a different life Varic Vallenar, and the crew of The Last Horizon may be the only ones who can stop them.

The Knight and The Last Horizon series as a whole haven't captured my attention like Cradle and Traveler's Gate. My experience has been more similar to reading The Elder Empire series. I am holding out hope for everything to change in a moment and spark my interest like I had with The Elder Empire series, but nothing that happened in The Knight did that for me.

The Knight follows the same formula of its predecessors, a threat from one of Varic's past lives has threatened the galaxy and The Last Horizon and her crew need to face it. We see moments from Varic's past life in between current events. I don't particularly care to be so aware of the threats the crew will face ahead of time. I do appreciate that the book acknowledged that threats from Varic's past keep threatening the galaxy and that there is hope for something unexpected to occur later on. I am holding out hope that the future known threats that have yet to fully emerge, Solstice and the Perfected, will make the story more interesting.

I find myself struggling to truly care about the characters in The Last Horizon. They largely seem perfect, unflawed, and only mildly interesting. Raion is consistently the most interesting crew member. He gives me the vibes of an overly enthusiastic version of Drax the Destroyer from the MCU which is a pretty good thing honestly. The other characters are largely the same as when we first met them. They mostly seem to lack genuine motivation for their actions. There was one moment that really stirred my interest though. Varic showed that he truly cared about something outside of his survival and the survival of the universe. I hope we can see more moments like that.

The villains in the series have been somewhat forgettable. The Iron King was super powered and wanted to control the universe. Starhammer was more interesting and page time was spent showing his descent into madness. He's been the best so far. The D'Niss are large monsters that needed to be stopped which is hard for a headlining villain. Solstice and The Perfected seem likely to supplant their predecessors in time. They had some good moments in the Knight and I hope those continue. The various Zenith Devices seem like they could eventually become intriguing, but as it stands they all just want mortals to wield them regardless of the overall consequences. As long as their purpose is fulfilled they're happy.

The Knight was more of a miss than a hit for me, but I will read The Pilot when it comes out.

This book was fun. Seriously, the knight is the best character in this series. Not as good as cradle, but a solid fun ride well worth reading.

Re-read: Really fun book. Raidon is probably my favorite character on the crew. Lots of action, lots of hilarious situations, and just overall fun. Really enjoying this series!

I was looking forward to Varic's revenge to be voiced, but that also meant Raion's beat down as well. I did skip a bit of the conference, because I really didn't like them. I much preferred the blooper version of events. They got off easy. I did feel sorry for the first one though. He tried and he was nice. Curious about the two threats incoming. Really not liking the father, he's one of those fingers in all pies and causing trouble. Either he's going to create/unleash a new big bad or he'll become it. Nothing about Jack. The students finally getting lessons and foreshadowing about the curse magic.

Damn, I should've waited. Getting good, another enemy partially off the table, the crew getting stronger in friendship and the Zennith's spreading their influence, so much chaos from one family. I didn't care about Visiria, after what they did to Raion, meh. Fave part was angry captain getting revenge. They got off easy. Omega seems more settled, although the thing with Lemon lol. Getting Bullet train vibes.

Another late one. Sucks I'm up to date. The father was annoying. At this point Varic's going to end up with not caring what happens to him. Yay, more teaching. The ring spirit was funny hijacking the class. Nice little bonding moments with the crew. Yes, Blue titan. Foreshadowing on the curse magic. Looks like Solstice next and Omega taking the spotlight. Looking forward to the next one.

I'm trying to figure out why the books in this series bore me so much more than the excellent Cradle series. It's not the change in genre, because in fact this problem started to manifest in the later Cradle books as well. Since 2020 or so, Wright's novels have become longer and less substantial. A lot of things happen, but the connections between one event and the next are weak. The characters don't react as deeply or stand out as strikingly as they used to. Certainly, the word-level writing style has deteriorated. I couldn't even finish The Knight. It felt inflated and thoughtless, as if it was compiled rather than written. Whatever process Wright has adopted since the pandemic, I hope he returns to the old one.

Thought the other two were stronger in both world and character development. This was just a lot of combat. The flashbacks didn’t work for me either.
And expected more of the knight in the book titled after him, even though he is my least favorite of the characters.

The story went everywhere

The characters went from one point to another, seemingly without a goal or anything. It ends up being tied up in the end, but I couldn't help myself and wonder if I shouldn't put that book down. If it wasn't written that Mr Will Wight himself, I would have.

So I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and pre-ordered the third one. Unfortunately, it just didn't quite hit in the same way. I found myself not really caring about the characters, and in fact fell asleep for the final chapters and don't even feel bad about it. I'll still check out the next one because I've developed a weird trust in Wright's writing.

I've come to accept that I'm just not going to love The Last Horizon as much as I've loved Cradle and that's ok. With Cradle, Will took his time, he built up to the threats, he let us get to know the characters and factions and built meaningful relationships between them, and he gave them time to savor their victories before confronting the next roadblock. Here, it's like the universe is a giant plate-spinning contest and Varic Vallenar and crew are the only ones trying to keep it from all crashing down. In the first couple books, this wasn't so bad. Book 1 is mostly about finding the ship, starting to assemble the crew and dealing with the threat of the Iron King (*cough* the Borg *cough*). Book 2 is mostly about getting the rest of the crew and dealing with the threat of the Advocates (*cough* Injustice-verse Justice League *cough*). Book 3 we've got a lot of repercussions from ticking off various galactic factions from the first two books (and dealing with remnants of previous threats), we've got clashes with the Perfected (*cough* alien Khan!!!!! *cough*), we've got one of our heroes dealing with his past as part of a team of super-heroes (*cough* Voltron/Power Rangers *cough*), also we've got the hunt for the magical sentient super-technology and trying to keep the annoyingly childish super-technology they have happy, and oh dear, it seems the giant extra-dimensional insects (*cough* pick your mecha anime of choice *cough*) have invaded the universe again... All in all, it's just too much. I like the IDEA of this universe, which is a gleeful mashup/parody of pretty much the worst of all possible universes where basically every world-ending threat from every science fiction universe ever just happens to all be a looming problem at the same time and nobody is doing anything about it but our band of OP heroes. Will Wight certainly has the humor, the dramatic sense, and the writing skills to make it fun, but the story needs room to breathe. For me, the Perfected subplot (and maybe the Zenith cannon subplot) felt like something that should've been left for another book as it's mostly just a distraction in a book whose main story was really interesting (Raion Raithe going home and facing the problems he couldn't beat with the skills of the Red Power Ranger, a winning attitude, and the power of friendship) and nicely heartfelt. Slow it down, please. Even so, this is a fun book, it just moves so fast and has so much crammed in that it's exhausting to read. I started this review by saying that I've accepted that I'll never love this series as much as Cradle, but that's not to say I don't like this series, and I intend to continue to snap up each volume as soon as it's available, I just hope that Will can pace himself a little better (both in narrative terms and for his health as we don't want him burning out).

Story: 3 stars
Performance: 5 stars
Overall: 4 stars

The book was great, but it was somehow too much and too short at the same time. Wil shoved a LOT into this book, but the problem with that is that it's less than 10 hours so everything felt rushed and underdeveloped. If this were a 16 hour book, it may have been a lot better. We would have had time to really care about some of the new characters, come to fear the new enemies introduced so that we could revel in their defeat(?).

Like a lot of ensemble books, there were a lot of perspective shifts, and as with a lot of multiverse books there were a lot of reality shifts. The two together caused a bit of whiplash for me, and it wasn't done as well as in the previous two books. Instead, it felt kind of like the audiobook version of a Star Trek clip episode with clips of episodes I haven't seen yet.

As always though, Baldree's performance was stellar and helped make the listen enjoyable. Hopefully the rest of the books will be better thought out and paced.

3.5/5 But Goodreads doesn’t do half points.

Still really fun, action packed and hilarious.

This book is the shortest to be released in this series and it really feels like it. It seems we didn’t get the time that was needed to build the relationships to really make the ending pay off.

I still love the overall theme of Friendship, and the resilience of our crew. It just felt like the stakes in this one didn’t have the same investment as we had in The Engineer.

However it’s clear he’s building up to something, and that this book was just the bridge to get there. It just sucks that it had to happen with The Knight, a book about Raion. (my favorite on the crew) It felt like he wasn’t even really all that present. And we focused more on the Karoshans than his actual home planet.

I get he has a lot to juggle, but I have no idea how he’s going to flesh these things out the way I want them to be with only three novels left.

Book 4⭐️
Audio 3⭐️ it seems Travis Baldree couldn’t keep up with this one, making some mistakes and getting tongue tied more than once

I confess I heard this one with half an ear and still enjoyed the heck out of it. Will Wight knows how to write stories and Travis knows how to tell them. They’re a good match overall.

If you’re looking for a super serious space opera, turn your little booty around and crab walk away. If you want a fun time, an amusing adventure, and a plethora of chances to laugh, you’ve come to the right space. I came in hoping for a good time and I was blasted by the power of friendship. 5/5. Would be blasted again.

This book suffers because of the first two books. The first book introduced so many characters of importance at once that combined with all the new species, magics etc. Drowned out the story and characters. Continuing this in book 2, just made the problem bigger. Now it's just names on the page, and I don't care about them. Still going to get the rest of the book in the series. Maybe I'll re read when it's done.

These books are so much fun. While this was the weakest book in the series, it was still great. There were a few parts that kind of dragged a little, but the humor, characters, and action made up for it for sure. I love how much this book dove into Raion’s character. He’s been my favorite side character of the series, so I really liked learning more about him. If you liked the first two books in the series, go read this. It doesn’t disappoint.

The good:

- we’re halfway done!
- more universe, more characters
- cleaning the table of baddies

The bad: (too much)

- too many (meaningless) characters
- uninteresting plot; what ARE they doing? Varic’s memories of other lives… how does he KNOWS these threats are imminent?
- the Flashbacks - poorly done, confusing and have no clear ‘memory’ vibe. They are just ‘dumped’ on readers with no story connection….
- The Knight himself (Raion)…. How can people empathize with him…? He is more stupid than can be explained…. How can Horizon pick such a stupid Knight…?
His actions do not evoke any sense of connection to him, but rather abuse his goodwill (as done again and again)… how much slapping does it take to get through his thick skull?
* Really annoying, since we, as readers, need to be convinced of the validity of his actions when taking his awesome powers into consideration. Stupid people don’t survive in that universe of massive menaces…..

- the team either faces enormous threats (D’Niss, Solstice, Perfected etc), or they meddle in puny politics…. Are they bored with big threats? What gives? They have time to waste?
It seems just very bad plot planning.

- so they need to heal someone, and only way is to get this healing device from the planet Visiria, but they want to maintain goodwill, so no stealing. But the local politics need them to ‘prove’ they are coming in goodwill. So no stealing. But fighting is okay to prove it. And you are stupid enough to buy it? Even while getting to ‘friendship’ vibe? Not even from your brother who set you up…? And you’re one of the 7 most powerful picked by Horizon…? …. Right….

- The Captain has no clear action plan. They just travel around till a Terror rises up or something (sure felt like it). Made it very hard to connect to any of it.
* Why are they saving the universe again? If Raion can’t stand up to 10-20 warriors (one-by-one), how can he face the D’Niss horde? How can any of them? If they can’t understand the small planetary politics, how can they face Solstice?
* Governments and Big mega-corporations out to get them
* Horizon is not the (glorified for nothing) Zenith it was all touted to be
* Sometimes, the MC(s) are nerfed to a ridiculous level, other times they are massive super beings which can annihilate continents and planets…. Well, which is it? Make up your mind would ya?
- Political maneuvering was simplistic and uninspiring. Also quite detached from the plot-line (such as it was)…

Just…. Breathe….

Hate to rant like this on writers, as I am sure he invested his time and energy to write this

I’ve enjoyed this series so far, though not nearly as much as this author’s other series. The first book was the best of them so far, but this one wasn’t bad.

Overall I just enjoy sci-fi, fantasy, progression, and superhero books, and this series checks all of those boxes here and there. I like the idea of the MC living different lives, and I like most of the characters.

What I don’t like: the Zenith devices. They’re annoying. Horizon has rubbed me wrong from the start, and not in a funny way. I like the crew and tolerate her, but I’ve had about enough of the sibling bickering bit. The tension stays high in these stories and the pettiness rings dissonant to that, rather than being the comic relief that I think they’re meant to be. They’re like an absolutely awful version of Dross.

I enjoy progression and litrpg stories, but few of them can hold my attention to the specific growth and magic details. Cradle is one of the exceptions because the detail-lessons are broken up and paced well, and they grow in complexity with the characters. In this story, all of the characters start out overpowered, which is fine, but that means I’m not interested in lessons. So chapters of magic classes are tedious.

I’m also just not a fan of the flashbacks at all, and found myself skipping those chapters. That might just be a personal problem though because I do that to all books with flashbacks. I don’t like sad things and flashbacks tend to be sad. Maybe. Who can say?

Another a personal and very subjective complaint is that these things are stressful to read. I took like a year long break from the Engineer because I got stressed out, and I’ve paused this one for the same reason. The fight/conflict scenes just last too long. I’m hypersensitive to all things unpleasant though, so this really shouldn’t be counted as an actual fault. Yes, I do know that these are light reading compared to a lot of other books. I went through a grimdark phase just like everyone else. That was then and this is now and here we are.

I’ll come back to finish it. I’m just annoyed to find myself doing it again.

My least favorite of the Last Horizon series, but it's still a lot of fun! Just felt incomplete.

I once again went into this book with my Last Horizon Expectations that I set for myself in order to not be disappointed:
1. At no point will there be any character growth
2. At no point will there be any romance
3. At no point will the deep interpersonal relationships of the crew be addressed. The characters will only have superficial interactions.
These books would be a lot better with even just a hint of these 3 things, but unfortunately you can't have it all. The horizon series is so fast paced and full of action and space magic that it is still a great ride without these.

Unfortunately, planet size bees make for less interesting villains than those in past books. They just have no personality and all died the first time we met them. This might be my own fault. In my review of the last book I asked for a more unique villain...

Felt like disjointed stuff happening, not much of an overarching story. Most of the characters had their own little side-plot, but none of them connected directly or thematically. A bunch of villains just appeared out of nowhere when it was time for the book to have a big battle and end. The book felt very incomplete, and it probably has to do with Will Wight working himself till he burnt out and also trying to get the Cradle animatic going.

The broship between Raion and Varrick was great, and I would have loved for them to actually talk about their friendship, but Raion seeing a visible representation of their friendship will have to do. Righteous vengeance Varrick beating down the senators was the highlight of the book.

I had a completely different idea of what Raion/Visiri looked like. I do not like how they look in the cover art. Took me out of the zone every time I saw it. Also, these books come out far enough apart that I keep forgetting what all the alien races are. Need to have an appendix in the back that lists races/factions/etc.

Book 3 of the Last Horizon, and this one’s focus character is my—and many other fans’—favorite character. Raion is a true gem with his never-say-die attitude and constant positive demeanor. So, does this book do justice to him? Let’s find out.

What I liked:
Like with the earlier entries, the Knight does not shy away from pop culture references and 90s nostalgia. The Titan Knights are an obvious nod to the Power Rangers/Super Sentai. And that’s barely scratching the surface. However, Wight unapologetically embraces every reference and makes it his own. This is one of the major reasons why I love the Last Horizon. He takes all these many references, elements, and pop culture icons, and weaves a story with break-neck pacing, chockfull of information that is somehow easy to read without being overwhelmed.

With the Knight, we get glimpses of Varic’s alternate life as the Blue Titan Knight, while in the present story we have Raion’s background coming to the forefront. The Titan Knights aren’t operational anymore, and the last surviving Knight has been infected with a virus only the crew of the Last Horizon can help cure. All this happens while the D’Niss are about to return and invade the galaxy, not to mention the surprising awakening of the Zenith Devices, and much more.

If you liked The Captain or The Engineer, you’ll probably enjoy The Knight. Because Wight continues his barrage of epic scene after epic scene with the break wires cut. It’s pulpy, it’s campy, but it’s just so so fun! Right from the opening scenes, you’re thrown in the middle of Varic’s attempt to get the crew back from their individual assignments—each of which is in the middle of a breakthrough, a reveal, or a high-octane fight scene.

By this point in the series, we’ve come to recognize characters well enough to not need re-introductions. Yet, Wight takes brief moments to re-introduce each character in their respective elements. From there, we embark on a journey that’s full of conflicts. Every crew member—all 6 of them—have a goal/mission that they need to accomplish as per their contract with the Last Horizon, and almost all of them happen simultaneously during this book. Of course, some receive more focus than others, but to see so many parallel story lines unfold was almost magical. Well, it’s been magical for three books now.

As I mentioned earlier, the D’Niss are the main antagonist of this book, and man they were really creepy. A literally epic scale battle with planet-sized psychic insectoids leading swarms of insects to battle hi-tech armies… even if you’ve seen or read this before, trust Will Wight to make it fun and entertaining. The book really picked up for me in the last third, where everything tied up in an epic adrenaline-rush finale. The epilogue teasing the next adventure was just the perfect bookend to this story.

Bonus: Absolutely LOVED the bloopers.

What I didn’t like:
I read somewhere that Will Wight had taken a break earlier this year to avoid burnout. Reading The Knight, I felt like maybe the burnout did affect the quality of this book to an extent.

For starters, almost all the alternate life sequences of Varic as the Titan Knight didn’t work for me. In the last two books, the flashback—if I can call them that—sequences were fun, gave us insights into these alternate lives and even built up much-needed context for current conflicts. But with this book, the flashbacks were just… dull. They weren’t as charming or thrilling or even intriguing. Maybe if they were done differently, or edited differently, they would’ve added to the story. Right now, they slowed the story down—which, in the context of the Last Horizon is still pretty fast paced.

Secondly, I really hated the entire Visiria sequence with Raion. I was worried that Raion being a focus character could potentially not work because he’s the perfect side-character. However, it wasn’t Raion’s character that was the problem, but what he is made to go through.
Apart from these, I did feel like the pacing and plot of this one was a little wonky. Looking back, I realize I wasn’t as invested in either of the plot lines as much as I was with the first two books. The Knight was overall very entertaining, but it does suffer from middle-book syndrome.

Conclusion:
I’m still going to continue reading The Last Horizon, mostly because I’m really enjoying the books. Besides, they are fast and easy reads. I love diving into 90s nostalgia, and Wight’s handling of it is epic at best and enjoyable even at its worst. It’s pulpy and campy, but I’ve had a good time with these stories so far, and am eagerly waiting for the next entry?.

TL;DR:
WHAT I LIKED: pop culture references, handling of multiple storylines, epic action sequences, epic finale, Bloopers
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE: the Visiria sequence, the Titan Knights alternate life sequences.
