Undying Lands

Rate this book
Every villain has a pastEvelina is a princess with no chance of becoming queen. The crown only passes to the Manor heir with the strongest magic, and hers is nothing more than a flicker of light. Which is great, since Evelina never wanted that burden in the first place. While she’s a lowly princess, she can roam freely. Not to mention stay by the side of her best friend since childhood, a companion unfit for a queen.

Daimon has spent his life trying to climb the ranks of the empire to prove his worth, to become a companion fit for a certain princess. He’s garnered the attention of those in power with the strength of his shadows, beings both good and evil. But the higher he climbs, the more he’s trapped between duty and heart.

Set three hundred years before the events of Lunaria, Undying Lands is a forbidden love story between a girl forced to be queen and the man tasked to keep her safe. In the midst of deadly war and the duties they both bear, can they prove their love undying?

Would you sell your soul if it means saving your family? For fans of The Cruel Prince, the Witcher, and The Plated Prisoner Series. Undying Lands is novella in The Unraveled Fate Series. I feel like lying down in TRAFFIC RIGHT NOW. My heart HURTS.

This book was pure, unadulterated sadism. And I ate up every SECOND of it. The MMC is a broody, tortured souled shadow daddy. So, with that, y’all know I loved him so much. I rooted for him the whole book (this book does not give him a damn break), his backstory is heart-wrenching. I really hope to see him get a happy ending.

Our FMC has a heart of gold, she’s loving, and has a sort of whimsy to her, even as a war healer. She is hopelessly in love with the MMC, too, which I co-sign.

This truly broke my heart, I never really cry but man this made me want to breakdown. I am really hoping for some resolution on this situation in the coming books, and it makes me even more nervous for the next part of this series.

10/10 would rec, just come with the tissues.

*Undying Lands* by Kara Douglas is a gripping novella in the Unraveled Fate series that dives into themes of love, loss, and sacrifice. At the heart of this novella lies the tragic and touching love story between Evelina & Daimon whose connection resonates long after turning the final page. Their relationship is nothing short of heartbreaking, a tapestry of love that stretches across opposing fates and the weight of past traumas. Their love, as much as it is beautiful, is marred by the cruel realities of their circumstances—imbued with a sense of inevitable loss that leaves the you yearning for their happiness while bracing for the heartache to come.

There’s so many Easter eggs in this that a reread of both Lunaria and Illuminance is something I fully intend to do! If you’re a fan of the series, *Undying Lands* is an essential read that both advances the plot and enriches the emotional stakes. It is so beautifully written and while the heartbreak hurts, it’s a story that I know I will continue to think about.

📖: Undying Lands (Book 2.5 in the Unraveled Fate Series)

Rating: ♾️⭐️

Listen, I want to keep this review as spoiler-free as possible so let me say this: Undying Lands *broke* me and I. AM. UNWELL. 😭

Can having your soul crushed and heart torn out then stomped all over also make me so excited for what’s next? 😅 This is exactly what Kara does.

Tropes/themes:
👀 Dual POV
❤️‍🩹 Healer/Soldier
🚫 Forbidden love
⚠️ Touch her & ☠️
💫 Gods, Goddesses, & mythical creatures
🐉 Sassy Wyvern
🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 Found Family
🌶️: Mild-moderate

"𝘐'𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘮 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘭𝘸𝘢𝘺𝘴. 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘦."

In this installment, we journey back hundreds of years prior to the events in Lunaria and meet pivotal characters and the challenges they face during the longstanding war. We see a soul-stirring connection between a reluctant royal (healer at heart) and a dutiful soldier who harbors dangerous secrets and battles impossible choices.

Kara’s writing truly shines as she imparts each character with a masterful level of depth and forges a story that is wistful, powerful, and utterly heartbreaking. These MCs embody the kind of love and fortitude that reverberates through time.

While the central romance is very much a tragic love story, we also see the enduring devotion among the found family. Kara delicately navigates the themes of duty, loss, and sacrifice.

Undying Lands is simply transcendent and I am going to need a lot of time to fully process all my emotions. I cannot wait to see where Book 3 takes us.

Thank you Kara for the ARC opportunity and gifting me with one of my new top 2024 reads! This is my honest and voluntary review.

✨ARC review ✨

Book 2.5 in the Unraveled Fate series is coming out Thursday, October 17th.

This book was the perfect placement between books two and three because it goes back in time for the backstory of Daimon and Evelina. Their story is very Dramione coded because she’s a healer and he’s a soldier. They’re also perfect complements to each other because he has shadows and she has light.

The world building is very interesting because the setting for book one is almost entirely in the human realm and then it keeps expanding over the next books. The magic system is really cool, and I love all the Wyverns (Zephyr🥹) and other creatures. You get to see a big theme of dreams including some very steamy dreams 😏

The characters are very well rounded and you learn to care for them so much. There were many times I became teary eyed and felt stress for them. There’s a lot of action in this book and Kara does such a good job keeping you focused on all of the plot points. This book will make you FEEL and I highly recommend this series to any Romantasy lover and bonus points if you’re a Dramione fan! 💕

I absolutely LOVE the previous two books and was ecstatic to be able to read an advanced copy of Undying Lands. I flew through the first two books and made sure to take my time with this one to truly savor my first experience, and my heart is not happy about it because I drew out such intense heartbreak for these characters.

This book is a prequel, however, should absolutely be read as the third. It was wonderful being able to follow and learn more about characters mentioned in previous books and how they connect to various events in the future. In the previous book, Evelina always seemed to have a sadness around her, and now we know why, and feel all her heartbreak along with her. I am not typically one to get emotional or cry with books, but Evelina and Daimon's story broke me in the best way possible. My only reason for not rating 5/5 stars is that the story does begin very slow for me, however once the characters history with one another were laid out, there is not a single negative I could say about this story.

I can't wait to see how Kara Douglas continues the series.

I received an ARC for this book from Kara Douglas as a street team member. I will try to do this as a spoiler free review!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶️🌶️

I can honestly say I was blown away and heart broken over and over again by the incredible story of Daimon and Evelina. I couldn’t put this book down from about 25%in until I finished it.

The love story was incredible. The sacrifice was heartbreaking. It explained so much about the first two books in the unraveled fates series and events that took place prior to Lunaria’s story. This book was so well written. The way she writes emotional moments is very thorough and impactful. The action scenes were incredibly detailed as well.

I would recommend this entire series but this book in Particular will require Kleenex as it will rip your heart out multiple times and leave you speechless.

⋆⭒˚☾⋆.˚ I Received This As An ARC, But This Review Is Totally Voluntary ⋆⭒˚☾⋆.˚

What I Liked:
☾ The history between Evelina and Daimon being shown throughout the books to establish a stronger connection to them.
☾ Seeing Evelina come into her own as a healer, then warrior, then queen. Her journey is that of strength and resilience and I just admired it so much.
☾ Daimon's whole vibe. He was nothing like what I expected him to be and this novella added so much nuance and complexity to his character.
☾ The found family. The riders were such a tight knit group, and it was so heartwarming to watch them take Evelina in with no hesitation.
☾ How much deeper the connection to the current timeline of the Unraveled Fates Saga is now. Seeing all of these characters, what they went through and how they got to where they are made the world feel that much more rich.

What I Didn't Like:
☾ Literally have nothing to write here. Is wanting more Evelina and Daimon something I didn't like? If so, sure.

Final Thoughts:
☾ The gorgeous exposition, intricate character work and rich history made this such an immersive reading experience. I flew through this book because I just could not put it down. Absolutely stunning, and I cannot wait to see what Kara does next.

I received an ARC copy of this book and here is my review. In all honesty, I’m not usually a novella girl…but this one had me hooked! A full, immersive storyline with so many great elements to enrich it:

- Healers and herbology 🌿
- Wyvern riders and fae ✨
- Childhood best friends/love interests separated by war and chaos 🌙
- Soul-Bonded mates and forbidden love 💖
- Contrast between dark and light magic 🪄

“Even if the lands die, my love will remain for you.” It was a vow from him, a promise. “Until the stars collide and these wretched lands implode, my love will not falter.”

I loved learning more about Evelina. This novella added another layer of depth and drew you deeper into the world building. The characters were great. I loved it! Lucky for you this was just released and you can find it on KU.

I received an ARC version and am voluntarily writing my review of this book.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE.
After reading the first two books in the Unraveled Fate series a few months ago, I was left with utter devastation to find out I had to wait for book 2.5 to come out and the rest of the series... I absolutely love fantasy/adventure/romance books ESPECIALLY when it combines all three and boy does this series tie you in and throw unexpected turns your way!

Undying Lands is just the quencher we need to satisfy our hunger for more after book 2 in this series! I am all for understanding the deeper stories, backgrounds, and hidden elements of different characters. I loved getting to know more of the small details that connect characters and reasonings throughout the story and how exciting it can make the rest of the books!

Take it from a diehard fantasy/adventure reader, you absolutely want to read this book and while youre at it if you haven't read the first two go do that first then come back to Undying Lands!! :)

Firstly thank you Kara for picking me to be on your street and ARC team I have loved every moment!

I would just like to start off by saying this book ripped my heart out. I LOVE these two characters and their story was just so heartbreaking. But there is just something about a forbidden romance that makes me fall even more in love with the characters. The plot and characters came together to make an amazing story that I think has been one of my favorites of the year.

Evelina is a strong, fierce FMC who is not afraid of who she is. She is the last in line for the throne and therefore has no inclination to be Queen and would rather spend her days in the infirmary healing others. But when she is called on in a time of need she steps up and doesn’t hesitate which is something I admire about her. But knowing how her love story was bound to end… it was crushing.

Daimon is a brooding teddy bear. He puts on a façade to hide what he’s really feeling to try to protect others. His and Evelina's story was so beautiful. I loved that we got his POV and we could see him falling in love with her even as he tried to fight his feelings. I honestly just loved these two characters so much and am hoping that we are going to get more of them further in the series because I just can’t accept how this ended 😭

Overall I LOVED this book. This whole series is amazing. I can’t wait for more in this world and getting this backstory really connected some dots for the series and just made me love all of the characters even more. If you haven’t read this series I would start with Lunaria, then Illuminance, and then read this book to avoid potential spoilers.

Firstly- a huge thank you to Kara Douglas for the ARC of Undying Lands, I truly loved every moment of this book!

Undying Lands starts of strong with a dedication to the reader that says;

“To anyone who had to learn how to heal themselves.”

I feel like that alone speaks volumes to what this book has in store, and yet I was still blindsided by the amount of tears I shed reading the beautiful, gut wrenching journey that is Evelina and Daimon’s journey.

I absolutely fell in love with all the characters, and my heart was broken many times over.
This is truly a book fulled with healing, a story of people who struggle to feel accepted, who feel unworthy of everyone. It’s a tale of characters who have to face grief so deep that it eats them from the inside out, but have to do so with a smile because they have duties to their kingdom. It’s the voice of people who will never be completely whole again.

👏🏻 RELATABLE 👏🏻 CHARACTERS 👏🏻

Kara Douglas has again delivered an amazingly descriptive story that has you not wanting to put your book down. The world building is impeccable, and oh how I would love to be able to visit Nox Grove or Lillium Glade 🥹

Seeing characters we know as the adults, the “oldies” if you will- in previous book, as young fae in Undying Lands was so wholesome, and it’s made me want to read over the other books again with fresh eyes!

Oh, in case you missed it in the rest of the words above this, this book broke my heart. Kara, seriously. You should be sending everyone tissues with this novel.

If you like the idea of having your heart broken and want to read this (I mean, seriously Wyverns, Shadow Daddy, Healer x Commander, Found Family, and so much more- why would you not) then go pick up a copy of Lunaria and begin your journey into the Unraveled Fates Universe!

4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ wish I could do half stars in the ratings!

As a fan of Lunaria and Illuminance, speed reading the two in about two days, this was such a great read. Undying Lands tells the background story of Lunaria’s parents, Daimon and Evelina. Even though we learned of all these characters in the other books, this story brought a complicated, deeper understanding and complexity to each of the previous introduced characters.

Seeing Evelina evolve from not in line to be ruling and working as a healer, to fighting for a better realm as Queen was amazing. Her character was transformative to say the least, and her heartache will be yours. The journey she goes through and finding her soulbonded…. 😭😭😭😭❤️‍🔥 my heart burns for Evelina and Daimon.

Now, Daimon… he is a shadow daddy with a complicated past. We learn about his heritage, his destiny, and why he is who is. Him leading Alpha Fleet with Brielle and Zephyr was everything. My heart broke learning about the battle discussed in the previous books. I wish Daimon could get everything he dreamed of, in the literal and figurative sense.

The friendship between Senna and Evelina was so pure 😇 Senna will have my heart, a loyal friend till the end. Evelina and Lawrence…. OMG WHAT!? Did not see that coming.

I wish they both got a happier ending, but I totally get all this chaos and despair had to happen to lead to the present day in the other books. It just killed my heart! Especially the ending… if you know about Lu and Leda playing in the glade, then you know why it killed me.

Y’all, this was utter literary perfection! I laughed, I swooned, and I sobbed my little heart out! Technically, this one is a prequel to Kara’s other two books, Lunaria and Illuminance, but for the most impact it should definitely be read 3rd!! This audiobook was also freaking fantastic, the narrators @meganwicks and Xander Marceaux did such an excellent job portraying all of the emotion this book contains! Learning more about Evelina’s backstory was everything I didn’t know that I needed, and explained so much. Her and Daimon were just perfect and tragic and I love them so freaking much 🥹😭😭😭 and my sweet sassy girl Zephyr 🫶🏻🐉

I love this book. I love this series. I love Kara. Just do yourselves a favor and go pick these up already!! Remember, start with Lunaria!! 🙂‍↕️

i loved having this story about evalina and daimon! still brutal and tragic portions but they make the happy parts even more special (or at least that’s what i tell myself). did have to stare at the wall for a solid few minutes after finishing because the backstory for these characters makes what happens in lunaria and illuminance have even further depth. forbidden love, war, and grief but at least there are pretty plants and magic and pockets of hope! can’t wait for the official third book in the series :)

KARA DOES IT AGAIN.

I did not expect to cry tonight but WOW my heart. That was an emotional roller coaster. This book went from battle scenes to heart break to happiness with a bit of unresolved sadness. Now that I know the backstory between Evelina and Daimon, I cannot wait to jump back into this series for book 3!

This book was seriously so well written and I’m obsessed with Kara’s writing.

Thank you so much to Kara for an ARC in exchange for my honest review!

Honestly it took a slow burn into Evelina and Daimon’s story. I enjoyed it thoroughly and it was well written switching between Eve and Daimon. Especially when it came to their pain and getting through it together. If you really want to read more about a shadow daddy and his queen I definitely recommend. However there were details I would have liked elaborated on especially towards the end when it seemed rushed. Overall such a great book and I can’t wait for the next two!

A beautiful look into a beautifully crafted world

I loved this book! It took me a few chapters to get back into the world Kara Douglas created but once I remembered how it fit together I loved it! Getting a deep look into the past that Lunaria and the second novel was built on was super interesting. Learning how the pieces come together and how they affected the first two books was so exciting! I’m very much looking forward to the next book!

I suffered throughout this book but loved it with all my heart 😭🤍. Undying Lands is a beautifully written tragic love story that broke me in the best way possible — I may or may not have shed a few tears along the way.

Even though this is technically a prequel, reading it after the second book was perfect (and recommended by the author). It added so much context to the earlier books and built anticipation for what is to come. The world-building and lore were so good, pulling me even deeper into this universe.

Evelina’s story was both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Learning about her past and everything she endured made me admire her strength even more. She’s such a resilient character, and honestly, I just want to wrap her in a big hug 😭.

Every villain has a past…..and not every queen dreamed of being one.

First I want to thank Kara Douglas for the incredible opportunity to receive an eARC of this book! It was my first ARC experience. 🥹

I live for books that will cause emotional damage and this did not disappoint, I don’t think I will ever fully recover! Evelina and Daimon live in my heart forever. This is definitely up there on the top favorites list!

Evelina has the biggest heart despite the constant heartbreak that fate sends her way. Her love for her people and her kingdom is very evident even though she has no intention or desire of becoming their queen. I loved her kind nature but fierce protectiveness of those she loves, she’s a total badass!

Daimon….oh Daimon….my heart breaks for him. His fight to become worthy of love was gut wrenching. There is nothing he would not do for those he loves. He is selfless, and his sacrifices again and again are a testament to his true character.

The forbidden, star crossed romance was beautiful and deep. Their love and pain flew off the pages and into my heart, breaking me with them. I will definitely be rereading this one.

If you haven’t read Lunaria and Illuminance, get on that asap because they’re amazing too and Undying Lands (book 2.5 in the series) is out 10/17! You definitely need to read those first.

✨ this is a voluntary review after receiving an ARC ✨

I knew what I was getting myself into and I still found myself crying through the last 1/4 of this book.

This story and writing had me hooked and binge reading through exhaustion. It’s fast paced and filled with so much history that will be relevant to Lunaria’s story.

Kara captures longing and the tragedy of being a selfless leader beautifully.

I cannot wait read more of this series.

I don’t think I’ll ever recover from the emotional damage this book caused me.

Getting to know these characters on a deeper level, even though we know what happens to them since it’s a prequel, was both beautiful and heartbreaking. As much as this book broke me, I’m so happy Kara decided to give Evelina and Daimon their own story. Knowing what happened during the war, what ended it (for now) and how they were all coping with the fall out has made me even more invested in the main storyline with Lunaria. All I want to do now is reread the first two books and I just know my perspective will be completely different.

Here’s to hoping Evelina and Daimon get some type of happily ever after at the end of the series.

Thank you to the author for sending me a copy to review!

3.5⭐️

“Undying Lands” was significantly better than the previous two books in this series. I felt the writing was better and enjoyed the plot and characters a lot more. Additionally, I felt this prequel was a very unique way of providing context for the setup of the series as well as Lunaria, Evelina, and Daimon. This story was emotional and a definitely heart-wrenching at times. While I definitely have more positive feelings towards this book compared to the others in the series, it was not without faults.

My biggest issue with this book was the pacing. The story was kind of all over the place in the beginning and was lacking originality. A lot of the relationships and action in the book went from 0-100 and were a bit jarring to read. Additionally, it took me a long time to genuinely understand what caused the war. (It had been touched on in all three books, but I felt it was not explained well enough until over halfway through “Undying Lands.”) For such a huge plot point, I feel more information could have been provided. Along with this, some of the writing was still very confusing in this book; making certain scenes hard to follow. One example that caused me a lot of trouble was this sentence: “He made sure to settle his shadow over the campfires below, blocking their light so he couldn’t see the fires they made no matter how close he was…” I am not sure if it’s the sentence structure Douglas favors, but there were several descriptions that I could not understand, and I have heard others express similar difficulty following the scene descriptions in all three books.

Like the other two books, “Undying Lands” is pretty repetitive in both the events that take place and the words used to describe these actions. A lot of the pages ran together as I was reading the exact same phrase several times.

Though I have expressed a few issues with this book, most of these issues did occur in the beginning of the book and I feel everything improved as the story continued. A lot of this also came from, again, the weird pacing of the relationship between Evelina and Daimon. As I said, it felt a bit 0-100 and I was very confused when Evelina stated she didn’t recognize her “closest and only friend”? Even after several years, this was odd to me.

Finally, my last issue of this book came from some continuity errors. In the beginning of the book, it is stated that Daimon left without saying goodbye or proving a reason for his departure. Not long after this, Evelina remembers the day Daimon explains he was chosen as a Rider and that he must leave. I may have missed something here, but I could not get past this glaring contradiction of what happened. Additionally, in one of the earlier books, Lunaria remembers being forced into a closed space while her mother leaves to protect her; this was written in a way to make me believe this was how she was taken from Penyth. However, everything else that has been said states that she was taken from the forest while out with Leda (the events leading up to this were also described in “Undying Lands”). Again, I could have missed something or this could be an event that surfaces later, but from where I stand now, this is a pretty huge continuity error that I could not get past.

Though it probably feels like I was a bit too hard on this book, I did enjoy the unique approach to sharing some background information on this story and the characters. This was a refreshing change of pace from the other books and the insight provided was useful and enjoyable to read. This book is definitely my favorite of the three and I feel much has been improved from the first two books. I have higher hopes for the next two books in the series and hope improvements continue to be made.

If you’ve been following along, you know that I am obsessed with Lunaria and The Unraveled Fate Series! When author Kara Douglas announced that she was releasing book 2.5, I was both excited and intrigued. I love a good origin story/backstory and couldn’t wait to learn more about a few of the characters and how some key events in the series came about. Oh my goodness, this book did not disappoint!

The story focuses on Evelina, Lunaria’s mother, and her father’s (who will remain nameless here so I don’t spoil anything) love story. To be honest, I was expecting a “how it all came about” tale, but Undying Lands is so much more than that. It’s full of hope, heartache, tragedy, questionable decisions, and longing. So. Much. Longing. Slowburn fans, you’re especially going to love this one 😉.

I think the most shocking, and potentially heart ripping, part of Undying Lands for me was the villain origin story of a person of great significance in Lunaria’s life. While I’ll never excuse the awful choices this character made, it was so tragic to see how the decisions of others ultimately took away this person’s autonomy for a time. I also found myself sympathizing with this character up until they turned evil, which I think Kara Douglas deserves a standing ovation for!

Ultimately, I feel like I understand the series so much more. The background knowledge I learned in Undying Lands helped me to connect with the characters fathoms deeper that if I’d never read the novel. If you’re a fan of The Unraveled Fate Series, you absolutely need to read this book!
