I preferred the variant endings from the actual book - this wasn't bad but I'm finding it a bit forgettable even a day later, which is definitely not a good sign. I also was expecting it to be different based on the title. On a slightly unrelated note, I love that the Tan included both an audiobook and an ebook version of it for her newsletter subscribers. Accessibility really makes me go feral for an author.

For a bonus ending, this is written and edited quite well. At the same time, it’s probably the worst ending of the three and our protagonists (especially Gean Choo) feel a bit out of character. When it comes to themes, the other two endings complement each other quite well, whereas this one doesn’t have anything interesting to say. There’s one very fucked up thing that happens but not nearly enough space to explore it or grapple with the consequences, to a point where it would’ve perhaps been better not to include it in the first place. On the plus side, two lines of dialogue are funnier than pretty much anything that happens in the novel. If you liked the novel and are interested in What If stories, this is worth reading, but you’re also not missing out when skipping it.

I preferred the endings included in the books. The character motivations in this one weren't as clear in places and it was all-around less satisfying and memorable than the other two endings. Still, it's Lianyu Tan, so it's good---and newsletter subscribers get their pick between ebook and audio format. Very neat!
