There are many, many books out there on How To Write a Screenplay, but I haven't seen one about what the writer should know BEFORE sitting down to write their's. This is that book. It's based on what I've learned from having written over 50, feature-length screenplays, some produced. My two years working with Russ Meyer as his assistant at Fox, a position that allowed me rare access to what goes on behind the scenes before, during and after the production of a major motion picture. It's the things I learned BEFORE production began that are the basis of this slim volume.
The 22-Page Miracle : From Novice to Hollywood Mogul
Once upon a time, in a lilliputian parisian cavern, lived our protagonist , Théo Scribbleton, who was an aspiring screenwriter with dreams as vast as the sadness of a hungry dog, and a bank account as empty as a plot hole in a B-movie script. One fateful day, while browsing the bargain bin at a dusty bookstore, Théo stumbled upon a thin, 22-pages unassuming book titled " Screenplay : Things You Should Know Before Writing Yours ". The cover featured a stick figure holding a quill, which seemed fitting for a book that could fit in his pocket. Théo devoured the entire book in one sitting. It took him approximately as long as it would have taken him to convince a blonde that a rainbow is in his bed. The 22 pages contained gems like " characters should have names ", and " Conflict is good ", and " Dialogue is when characters talk ". Armed with this newfound wisdom, Théo sat down at his vintage typewriter ( real writers use typewriters, obviously ), and began typing. His first screenplay was titled " Love in the Dumpster Fire " , a heartwarming romance set against the backdrop of a literal dumpster fire. Here's a snippet of Théo's brilliant dialogue : Michelle - " I love you, Jacques. But why are we standing in a flaming dumpster ? " Jacques : " Because, Michelle, our love is hotter than this fire. Besides, rent in Paris is insane . " Théo submitted his masterpiece to Steven Spielberg, who answered him even before receiving the script. Suddenly, I felt something on my right shoulder. It was my cat, Sex, looking at me, as if he said " Hey ! Wake up ! " Merde. What a nightmare..Thanks, Sex.
