Explore 60 thrilling years of McLaren Formula 1 race cars in this handsome volume, complete with detailed specs, stunning photography, a foreword by twice World Champion Mika Häkkinen, and the full competition record for every car.
McLaren has been a top Formula 1 competitor and innovator since it fielded founder and driver Bruce McLaren’s first car, the M2B, in 1966. Just two years later, Bruce scored the team’s first grand prix win. Tragically, he was killed in 1970 while testing his Can-Am car at Goodwood.
Despite the heavy loss of its founder, McLaren carried on, scoring its first of twelve championships in 1974 with Emerson Fitipaldi. McLaren’s roster of F1 Champions includes such greats as James Hunt, Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, and modern master Lewis Hamilton.
Equally legendary are the cars themselves, including 1960s M7A 1970s M23 1980s MP4/2 1990s MP4/5 2000s MP4-23 Today’s MCL 60 As the second longest-running team in F1 (surpassed only by Ferrari), McLaren holds twelve Drivers Championships and eight Constructor’s titles.
McLaren Formula 1 Car by Car chronicles every McLaren Formula 1 car in chronological order, featuring an overview of each car’s significant features and evolution, its technical specifications, and its competition record accompanied by historic and contemporary images.
Featuring a Foreword from two-time F1 World Champion Mika Häkkinen, McLaren Formula 1 Car by Car details the amazing race cars and drivers that have cemented McLaren’s reputation as one of the most dominant manufacturers in F1 history making this book a must-have for every McLaren and F1 fan.
I received this book as an eARC from Quarto Publishing Group through NetGalley and this review is based on my own opinion.
This book is about the evolution of the McLaren cars from the very beginning until the latest car in the field. The chapters are short and they are all accompanied by gorgeous photos.
I would advise to only read it if you're really interested in the cars and details of it because it does contain a lot of info and technical talk that was a bit too much and overwhelming for a girl who watches Formula 1 for the sport and doesn't really know anything about the cars and it's parts 😅.
But apart from that the writing was great so if you're really into it, it would be a great book to read.
A stunning tribute to the brilliant McLaren team, with glorious photography and plenty of nostalgia.
As a huge motor racing fan, this was a fascinating insight into the development of the cars over the years, although some of the technical jargon went over my head somewhat.
I would love to see this as a glossy hardback coffee table book.
4 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Stuart Codling and Quarto for an ARC in return for an honest review.
This beautiful collection details 60 years of McLaren Formula 1 race cars. I have occasionally watched Formula 1 racing, but admittedly Indycar racing holds my interest more but as McLaren has also gotten involved in Indycar racing, I was interested in reading this book.
Bruce McLaren was a New Zealander who was a driver, a car designer, and an engineer. Sadly he was killed in 1970 performing testing in his Can-Am car. The McLaren team, however, carried on and produced some great Formula 1 drivers over the years (my favorite being Emerson Fitipaldi who also went on to have a great racing career in Indycar).
This was a beautiful book to flip through and read. It details the years of the McLaren team through the cars they ran. This would be a great present for a racing fan.
Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group for a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to NetGalley for sending me a copy of this book to review. Ok so to preface this, I am a HUGE F1/McLaren fan and I think you have to have preexisting knowledge of the sport to enjoy this book. That being said, I really enjoyed the formatting of the book! The pictures and accompanying history was fun to learn/walk back through. I learned some new information and got a better feel for the McLaren history. I did feel like it was more engineering based rather than historical and some of the book drags because of it. I did enjoy it though and would recommend it to any F1 fan.
This book is a fantastic in-depth look into the history of one of the most iconic F1 Teams. Takes you from the humble beginnings all the way to the legend of today. The photos are amazing, just seeing the evolution of the cars through the years is a real treat. It’s a must read for any McLaren fan and should be read by anyone with an interest in F1.
