After an attack by the mortal enemies of her tribe, Evaya and Thaniel must journey with one of the attackers to get their people back.
Stuck between the humans who conquered their lands and the Seranai who have abducted their people for centuries, the Calanai have finally managed to find relative peace. Using all of their god-given power to set up wards around the Seranai forest, keeping them in and themselves out, the small strip of land assigned to them by the humans is finally safe enough to settle.
Now, ninety years later, Evaya is her tribe’s Lore Keeper whose job is to teach everyone just how terrible the humans and Seranai have been to them. But her fascination with the forest and its inhabitants has always been something she has felt alone in. They’re supposed to be the enemy, but what is there’s more to the story?
But when the Seranai attack once again, Evaya’s love for them disappears. Evaya and her brother, Thaniel, are the only ones who didn’t get killed or taken into the forest. Their only hope to find their people is the one Seranai they captured. But as their prisoner, Dorthin keeps insisting he doesn’t remember attacking them at all. Still, him being their only lead, they take him with them.
As they travel together, Evaya has to ask herself if what she’s been taught is the truth, or just a case of history being written by the victors. Traversing a new world leads her to find and learn terrible things that maybe she’d rather have stayed in the dark about.
THE SERANAI is the first book in THE LORE KEEPER TRILOGY. A story about people finding truth and acceptance.
I really enjoyed this book—it’s such an easy and fun read!
The story keeps you hooked and the characters are easy to connect with. It’s easy to imagine everything that’s happening because the emotions and world-building is detailed but not overwhelming. The way the world is built is unique and creative, very refreshing.
