Unexpected Ascension Book 1: An Isekai LitRPG Adventure

Rate this book
Adrian was on his way to work when he was summoned to another world.

A world of magic and monsters, where he finds himself more alive than he has ever been on Earth. But also, where death awaits him in any corner, and he must become stronger.

But at first, before he can even fight, he has to run, because he is too weak to win a battle against even the weakest monster. And that is why he invests all of his Essence Points into his Agility. Which eventually gives him the potential to overcome almost all his enemies— with the small caveat that he does not get hit, of course.

His immense speed also proves useful for him because it allows him to run away from the evil Dryadilis Empire that is hunting him powerful elves who want to take over the world. And even though it seems like he was summoned to defeat Empress Shiavarathna to save humankind, that was not why he was summoned. Instead, he was brought to this world by the mysterious Dark Wizard for reasons that are kept unknown.

And as Adrian finds shelter in the City of Dorn to level up and grow stronger in safety, he shall unravel the mystery as to why he was summoned in the first place.

Check out this isekai litrpg with an OP MC that is perfect for fans of The Primal Hunter, Defiance of the Fall, and He Who Fights With Monsters!

C-

The only good thing about this book was the character realism but everything else had problems.

The first was an issue on page 13 when you wrote the skill “Double Stab” twice in his statues window. Lay I enjoyed some fights after he beats the first if an enemy the story just compressed into kill messages for everyone after it then we get the broken leveling speed has I don’t get why more people aren’t higher Lv in that world.

I hope you fix this for book 2.

Dull

So the relatively simple leveling system and in this case the protagonist gets one point in every set and an extra point in each level which he puts into being faster. The world building was very simple the system was very simple. The story is entirely driven by the plot. There's a ton of inconsistencies. The pacing of the story is also not great. The protagonist just inexplicably gains levels faster than everyone else seems to.

Rushed….

MC started off making wise decisions then turned off his brain. Seriously, get an advance in the loot you dropped off. You have inventory and there is no way he should be hungry. The crime boss is active for reason. If the powers-that-be could do something, they would have. The MC started chasing every random idea. It was OK.

Decent LitRPG start

I feel bad only rating at 3 stars as I can tell the author is passionate about this genre and I’m always excited to read new takes on it. However, there are quite a few grammatical and spelling errors, as well as just very clunky phrasing. My intention is not to nitpick but these little things can definitely take a reader out of the story.

In terms of story there isn’t much that’s truly original so far - you can really feel the influence of books like Defiance of the Fall, and for me it felt A LOT like the start of the Unbound series with the main character being summoned by someone, and another party interfering with that.

As a side note- the virtual (computer generated voice narration) is serviceable for the $1.00 I paid but there are not voices for different characters or changes in tone to express narrative shifts or events. It’s not a replacement for a real voice actor, but for a small author like this it provides an audiobook format for readers who really want that. It should always be at a heavily discounted price.

I know this review has been pretty critical but I want to provide feedback that may help the author gain more of an audience. I hope that they have the time and resources to polish this entry and make the next even better, as I will be reading it!

Just a good ole fashion isekai

This book is for the people who like to see an MC grind and grow. If you are into the minutiae, it may not be for you.

If something like reading about an MC eating a rabbit he killed but not explaining the process of skinning it and cooking it bothers you, then this is probably not for you.

The MC is summoned to a new world, and he is being hunted by people far stronger than him. About 90% of this book is about what he is doing to get stronger and how he is doing it.

His OP skills at 1st glance may seem minor, a small Stat boost, and a slight increase in leveling speed. But towards the end, it may seem more OP than originally thought.

Mc isn't OP in book 1 he still has Tiers to climb before he is anywhere near the threat he faces.

Overall, I thought it was a fun read. A lot of system Isekais get bogged down by trying to be too comedic or stressing minor, & boring details. This one just gets to the point.

P.S. MC is going for a rogue build, which will feature shadow skills from what I can see.

Simple. Ruff start but became better.

The beginning of the story felt thrown together and very whimsical with the main character transitioning to a new world, and the plot just accommodated whatever he needed to make that happen. The story really holds no suspense or uniqueness as the fish out of water struggles to become higher leveled. The story became more engaging as the main character found himself in a situation where he had agency to make his own decisions instead of the plot line forcing him to go from a to b to c. Once the character started making his own decisions it became a much better read in the second half of the book. Still the overall story, world building, and plotline feel weak and contrived. Maybe it's just very simple plot line.
Unfortunately I'm not sure if I care to read what happens to the character and book two of the series, as this first book was rather forgettable.

When you separate the wheat from the chaff its a well done example of the trope. I actually want to read the continuation even though it probably should have only gotten 3*. Why you say. Because it takes advantage of the genre to be lazy and provide lots of Chaff. In 337 pages the MC levels up 60 times, that's ~30 pages of reprint of the entire character sheet despite only minor changes between any 2 adjacent levels. There are also about 180 repetitions of the 5 line paragraph providing a kill notification. That's another 20 pages of unnecessary reprints wasting space. Yes the genre demands some of that but in total we have approximately 12% of the novels total length that is cut-paste reprint. That's just plain lazy.

Unexpected world crazy level ups

We start following a human from our world as he tries to survive. He finds out he's 1 of 100 who were brought by a seemingly crazed wizard who just lets him know that he has to level up to survive. The Wizard shows him the Elves have stopped being passive and are capturing the humans. So now Elves are after him, and they will get him if he doesn't find refuge. But the Wizard tells him He can find refuge in the Dwarves city of Dorn so he starts running. When he gets there he finds a dungeon and gets addicted to leveling up. Which is good cause those high level Elves are heading to find and kill him.

Solid beginning

Now this is straight action,... Which I enjoy sometimes.. If you want hard non stop action and power leveling. This is the book...a great job in that regards... Not really story or character development based.. This is an eighties action flick
Highly recommend

Fun isekai

MC is transported to a different world into the middle of nowhere only to find that everything there wants to catch or kill him. Is the MC a bit of a murderhobo? Sure. But at least he isn't that way by choice.

Awesome book, meh ending

This book was a lot of fun until I got to the end. You're going along at 100 mph, and then, BAM, it's over. So maybe wait until the sequel comes out, That way, you'll have a complete book.

Recommended, but with a huge freaking caveat.

Pretty Good.

It’s a good story, and I enjoyed it, but it’s a little simple without a lot of character interaction/development. More plot/action that character story. Still, an enjoyable read to pass the time.

great new story

Fast paced action litrpg. At times maybe a little too fast. Main character is a loner through and through, doesn’t agonize over decisions.. really felt like a breath of fresh air for an avid reader of the genre. Looking forward to more from this author.

Minor writing and grammatical errors

A decent book if you can look past the poor writing and grammatical errors. "MC does things and things fall onto place" issue but common enough among its peers.

Just not right

There was a mixed bag of goodies. The world description was slightly different but the characterization was non existent. The character can last for days without eating? Just misses the mark. Too much a power gaming mind set.

Entertaining. A bit unusual to have the main character focus on agility but it is a slightly different slant than many LitRPG. Overall, you get mysteries to unravel, friends to be made, and monsters to be killed. And of course, get more powerful. Pretty much a standard LitRPG.

fun and exciting story

A great read that keeps your interest. Cliffhanger ending that makes you ready for book 2. Very well done with only a couple spelling errors. Well worth your time.

Reminds me a bit of if Drizzit was a human rogue. I like the theme of the class. It's a fun fantasy story.

Almost done with the first book and although it started off slow it does get better and becomes steady. My only issue is that I can't find the next book...is there a book 2??

It was decent. The MC is kind of boring in the beginning but he is definitely developing a personality throughout the book. Got to love character growth!
