Fifteen years as a protection agent and I’ve never—not once—been tempted to break the rules. My reputation and professionalism are the reasons I’m about to secure the promotion of a lifetime. So the last person I need anywhere near me is Luke Beaumont, the very definition of temptation.

The man I’ve just been ordered to protect at any cost.

Luke is everything that I’m not. Charming and wealthy, messy and reckless. And he’s made it his mission to make my job impossible. While my irritatingly impulsive client would rather ignore the dangers of old family secrets and new forbidden attractions, I know better.

If this job’s taught me anything, it’s that emotions are a complication, and complications lead to distraction. Though nothing can prepare me for the onslaught of emotion when Luke is kidnapped. I’m hit with the glaring truth: I’ll risk it all to save him.

Even if that means losing everything.

FREE FALL is a steamy, standalone M/M bodyguard romance filled with flirty banter, forced proximity, action-packed suspense, small-town secrets, and all the queer joy.

Free Fall is a MM, stand alone, romantic suspense by Kathryn Nolan. This is my first book of Kathryn’s. Have you ever read a book that blew you away and dreaded trying to review it because you knew nothing you would say would do it justice? Well, that is the case here. I’ve been thinking about this review all day and still don’t know what to say, except, WOW!!! What a way to be introduced to Kathryn’s work!

First, meet Lucas Beaumont. Luke is twenty seven years old and works as an instructor at a local water sports company. He also works off season at a small book store. He has an older brother, Preston, who works with his father, and a younger half sister, Harriet. From the outside, one might consider Luke to be a lazy, reckless, spoiled, party boy living off his father’s wealth, born into a life of privilege. While Luke was born into wealth, that’s where the similarities end.

Elijah Knight is thirty seven years old. For fifteen years, Elijah has worked for a personal security company. The last five have been to protect Luke’s father. Elijah lives his life by a strict moral code, everything is always by the book. In his line of business, that’s how you stay alive and keep your clients safe. In just one month, he is set to take over as director of the security firm. He would be the youngest to hold the position. But for now, he has been ordered to protect Luke Beaumont. One look at him and he knew he was in trouble. And it seemed that Luke was determined to make his life miserable.

As these two spend endless hours together, Luke works hard to break down the outer shell Elijah tries so hard to keep in place around himself. There is chemistry between these two like crazy. But to act on it would be against every code of conduct in Elijah’s line of work. The threats to Luke’s life intensify and when he almost loses him, Elijah knows it times to make a choice. A life where he is safe, or a life filled with joy?

“What am I?”
“Warm. You’re warm. And kind. And charming.”
“Is that so?”
“You’re also reckless and irritating and I’ve already lost years off my life working with you.”

This book will make you smile, sigh, swoon, grip your e-reader tighter, turn the pages as fast as you can, and fall in love. I adored Elijah and Luke. I stayed up past my bedtime because I knew I couldn’t sleep until the very last page was read. And my first waking thoughts this morning were of these two. I loved Kathryn’s story telling. I was completely entranced all the way through.

I will read most any genre but it’s no secret that I prefer MM romance. I can honestly say that if Kathryn writes more, I will be the first in line, ready to grab my copy. So I urge you to run, don’t walk, and grab Free Fall for yourself. Make sure you have plenty of reading time set aside because you’re not going to want to do anything else.

I think this is Kathryn Nolan's first MM romance, and I'm happy to report it didn't read like MF with swapped pronouns. I have no complaints about the writing. This book is polished and well-edited.

Other positives: dual POV; likable but flawed MCs; romantic ending (we get not one but two swoony epilogues).

That being said, I'll admit I was tempted to DNF this book. I've read far longer books, but this one dragged. By 30% I was ready to throw in the towel but persevered. By 50% I was still bored out of my mind and started skimming.

The story was repetitive and sometimes felt like a bad episode of Scooby Due, as Lucas and Elijah continue to run away from the bad guys while looking for clues.

Someone is out to kill Lucas you see. Luke's late father was a powerful, corrupt man who had dirt on everyone, and the wanna-be-murderer is looking for a mysterious flash drive that contains political secrets.

Yes, a fucking flash drive.

Raise your hand if you've used one in the last decade. Yeah, me neither.

No one stores shit on flash drives anymore. For one, they're easy to lose and not secure. For two, destroying a flash drive doesn't guarantee the data on it isn't backed up somewhere else.

If you have top secret intel, you store it in a multi-encrypted cyber vault in an offshore domain on a private cloud.

Sorry for the tech rant, but the flash drive thing was so dated, it bugged me the entire time.

This isn't a terrible book by any means. I just found it tedious, and my rating reflects that.

Can we start a petition for Kathryn Nolan to write ALLLLLLLL the MM/bodyguard romance?!

Free Fall was absolutely delicious and I ate up EVERY.SINGLE.WORD. This book was Kathryn Nolan at her best!

I was sucked in from the very first page and could not put this book down! The tension! The pining! The suspense! I love how Kathryn pulls you in and doesn't let you go with her fluid style of writing until the very end. I love getting swept up in her love stories that celebrate all kinds of love--especially queer love--and love the smile and joy that her writing brings!

If you're a fan of bodyguard romances, pining, a buttoned up bodyguard and a hot mess of a man trying to break down the walls of said bodyguard, you are going to LOVE Free Fall!

I am surprised I enjoy this book as much as I did, but NGL, it was probably because the narrators did a great job.

Luke was charming and lovable, and Elijah tried his best to resist him LOL. The romance was very cute and I love the "sweetheart" moments, even if there was a bit of repetitiveness in the "we shouldn't be together because of the job". I feel like they had 3 versions of the same conversation.

The mystery of the flash drive was a bit random, as well as the investigation they did to find out who was behind the threats. The big reveal of the guilty party happened too fast without much explanation as to what it was all about.

But somehow, the story just grabbed me and I had a good time. I think I will probably continue reading more from this author.

4.5⭐️ I loved this! I’m such a sucker for the bodyguard trope. I’ve never heard of this author, she writes mainly MF, but this was such a great MM story with an exciting mystery plot! The writing and emotions reminded me of an Emmy Sanders book. The characters were so sweet and adorable. The slow burn, banter, chemistry, sexual tension, and spice were all top-notch swoon.

Whew! I finished this two days ago and I am still sporting a massive book hangover. I will try to pull my words together in a way that does this book justice. Written in first person from an alternating dual POV, this book takes Luke and Elijah on a journey to get to their HEA. It is a standalone.
Luke and Elijah both have baggage and trauma from their childhoods which they have responded to in very different ways. Elijah (37) is a man who chooses to respond by maintaining control of himself and of every situation where he finds himself. This man follows the rules. Getting involved with a client was never an option. Luke (27) chooses to rebel against rules and follow the path through life that embraces joy where he finds it. When they meet, though the mutual attraction is instant, they do not agree that Luke needs a bodyguard. The spark, the banter, the pining, that occurs between these two men: so divinely written. This author is a master of creating that tension between her characters and this is no exception. Their path to love is littered with danger, suspense, and some action-packed moments. They form a friendship that rapidly becomes feelings that are more. They are HOT together and the intimate scenes between them not only bring them physical satisfaction, but they also break down the emotional barriers between them.
This was beautifully written and reminded me of the author’s Codex series with the suspenseful elements that kept me turning the pages. I couldn’t put it down. The characters are layered, complex, and a little broken. They find healing and completion in each other, and it was absolutely beautiful to read. This is a book to be savored and I have zero doubts that I will be rereading this in the future. I can tell you now that this will be one of my top reads of the year.
I am voluntarily leaving this honest review after receiving an advance reader copy of the book.

I wanted to love this one since it seems everyone else did, but it was a bit of a struggle for me to finish. It starts off good, with the estranged son of a rich business owner unexpectedly inherits the company, his death threats, and his handsome bodyguard. It was just a little too slow moving for me and felt a little repetitive at times with the plot. Overall, if you like the slow burn, bodyguard, small town romance vibes you might enjoy this one.

When Elijah Knight is tasked to protect his former clients son, Luke Beaumont, he thought he could do it. Elijah is always professional and has never been tempted. That is about to change when he meets the extreme sport loving “party boy” turned CEO. When ominous threats on his life start, can Elijah keep Luke safe and keep his heart shielded? This drags you in from the very first chapter making each page turn more captivating. A great connection between two strong willed men that burns off the pages. I could not put this one down! It has a little of everything from action, mystery and family drama to a smoldering bodyguard MM love and a heartfelt story too! Luke pushing Elijah’s buttons was perfection! Get ready to free fall towards love! Top Read Of 2024. Told in first person and dual POV.

Best Book Ever!
I know I can always count on Kathryn Nolan to sneak in under my defenses with every feeling imaginable. Every single word in this book is laid down with intention.
Luke Beaumont and his stoic bodyguard Elijah couldn’t be more different, but the more time they spend in proximity, the more they realize how closely their upbringing mirrors each other. Their growing attraction and palpable longing for each other is classic Nolan, it’s so FRAUGHT it hurts! When their furtive flirting comes to fruition, you best be prepared for the smoke show.
With threats escalating on Luke’s life, Elijah must decide if Luke is worth risking his job, and his life for. I loved this book so much! The mystery, the passion, the heartache, the love. Perfection.

I loved this book so much!!

The chemistry between the MCs was amazing and the slow burn DELIVERED IT!!

I love the tension that every bodyguard romance gets but this one was so special. They were so different and their bond was so peculiar that I adored and loved every second of it.

I cried with their background and how they fight their demons in order to be together. They are sooo cute and the tension was so palpable and intense - it was INSANE!!!

The plot was also really fast paced and addictive and I really recommend it.

Thank you so much for this ARC!

3.5 stars. This was a fun, fast-paced bodyguard/client romance set in the Hamptons and featuring Luke, the charming son of a shady property tycoon who inherits insane wealth and dirty laundry and Elijah, his stoic bodyguard.

Luke, a seemingly carefree daredevil, inherits his father's business after his unexpected death. Luke, who had a really troubled relationship with his father, never wanted this and will do anything to get out of it. So he enlists his new bodyguard to help him uncover his father's secrets (reluctantly). They go on this mystery hunt to try and figure out what is going on, meanwhile there are legitimate threats to Luke's life that he does not take seriously AT ALL. Then there's the budding feelings these two start developing for each other.

I really enjoyed the sexual tension in the first part of the book, the grumpy/sunshine dynamic was great. And Luke really was charming and funny. But things kind of unravel after they act on their feelings. We suddenly have Elijah, who is meant to be a consummate professional, taking really absurd risks and just like falling apart under pressure because he can't control his emotions. I was embarrassed for him at points. The mystery aspect was okay, not particularly interesting or well-developed, but serving its purpose as a pretext for the MCs to spend time together.

The ending was pretty cheesy, but generally satisfying. Overall not a bad way to spend weekend.

the start of this book really draws you in and keeps you wanting to find out what is going on with this family. but the romance just didn’t hit the way they usually do for me. this was my first bodyguard romance and I did have high hopes. but they just weren’t met. I was more intrigued by the family drama/suspense, and that’s really what kept me reading. but this entire book just wasn’t it for me unfortunately. there were some good parts though!

Ooooh y'all, if you want a good bodyguard romance - Free Fall is IT. I've been really into romantic suspense and thriller vibes, and this book had me on the edge of my seat through the entire story. And gosh, once these guys FINALLY get together, the romance is so sweet! Set in a fictional version of the Hamptons, I was also getting some serious vacay vibes, so I'll say this is another perfect summer read you need to get on your TBR.

When Luke unexpectedly inherits his father's company, he also inherits his problems and his bodyguard, Elijah. Luke desperately wants to go back to his quiet (but exciting!) life, but after several assassination attempts he's forced to accept that he needs Elijah to watch his back. He ends up convincing him to help him get to the bottom of the attempts on his life, but the more time they spend in each other's presence, the more they cannot ignore the growing chemistry between them. Will Elijah put his job on the line for a chance with Luke?

OMG, Luke is such a fun character, total disaster bi. He's impulsive and a HUGE flirt, but I love that once he sets his eyes on Elijah, he's DONE. And oh gosh, Elijah is such a nuanced MMC. I loved reading his POV, his conflict between trying to do his job and his feelings for Luke was just 🤌🏼🤌🏼. I was actually a little surprised it wasn't a slower burn because he doesn't seem like the type to compromise his personal code for anyone! That said, the tension from the moment they meet is palpable, and when things finally heat up... PHEW. That’s when things start to make sense and you just know these guys are meant for each other.

For an opposites attract, grumpy/sunshine read, it's honestly kind of interesting how similar the backstories for both characters was. It made their unlikely relationship a little more understandable, and I love that they both try to help each other overcome the trauma that they both carry from their pasts.

@kathrynnolanromance is a new to me author, but I will DEFINITELY be reading more of her backlist now. Free Fall was such a fun read, and I love that I found a new favorite!

The first 30% was sooooooo boring. Then I skipped to the end and apparently you don't need the middle because they just reiterate everything for you at the end. It's all ham fisted and OTT.

Scooby Doo would have been better, "I could have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for you meddling kids!!" 😂

LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

omg. body guard romance is everything. the protectiveness??? the "no one but me keeps you safe"??? i loved how luke truly allowed for elijah to let his walls down. how he teased and bantered until elijah was so smitten and endeared there was no way he was ever going to be able to stop himself from falling for luke.

there's this one like where luke says that no one ever wants him they way he wants others, and then compare that to elijah literally giving up everything he worked for at his job because there was no way in hell he was going to give luke up??????? screaming, crying, throwing up. i desperately need a sequel of elijah and luke just being happy and domestic and cute because god they both deserve it so bad.

overall this was fun and interesting, and kept me invested. i went back and forth on two people for who i thought was the person threatening luke's life and my number 2 guess was right so i felt super proud of myself for guessing lol. also fuck luke's dad. not even gonna type out his name bc that guy SUCKS. and while we're at it elijah's dad too. he also sucks.

“That was a laugh. I knew it,” I said.

“Who can say?”

“Which means you do think I’m funny.” I held up my fingers to tick off the rest of the list. “And also warm and kind and charming. Per your own description.”

He sent me a sideways glance. “I also described you as reckless, irritating and having taken years off my life.”

I settled back in the passenger seat. “Yeah, but I’m funny. And you have a very sexy laugh.” His blush deepened. And those butterflies floated throughout my entire goddamn body.

I may be a little harsh but I just felt like this was boring. It was very slow moving and the dragged. I found myself skimming through some parts because it was making my eyes go crossed eyed. Elijah is hired as a body guard to Luke after Luke’s father passes and he inherits his billion dollar company. Luke is being threatened about a flash drive and he is determined to figure out just what his father was up to. Luke hated his father and couldn’t understand why he would leave his company to him instead of his brother Preston. Eli is forbidden to have relationships with a client but that can’t deter him from his feelings. Especially with Luke constantly in danger and eventually kidnapped. Turns out Luke’s dad was blackmailing a politician and they thought Luke had the flash drive with all the information. When he’s kidnapped, Eli find the drive and uses to it figure out who took him so he can rescue him

NO one does fraught pining like Kathryn Nolan. The chemistry between Luke and Elijah was palpable from their very first meeting, every touch, every look, every delicious argument was charged with want. More than that, these two very different men shared a very common pain in their past, and coming together not only healed their wounds but completed each other, and it was wonderful to see.

The suspense had my heart in my throat, combined with the simmering all consuming attraction between them both...and one glorious scene when the danger and want explodes at the same time was one of the hottest scenes I ever read in my life.

Kathryn's books always make you want to be a better person as she takes the characters on a journey not only to find love, but be the best version of themselves and help others along the way, and how she leads Luke and Elijah to the lives they were meant to live is beautiful. It's a thread throughout all her books, along with the scorching hot tension and glorious payoffs. As someone who has read her entire backlist, to say this book is my favorite is a big deal - and it absolutely is. All the stars for the misunderstood rich boy and his bodyguard in the bespoke suit.

✨ Happy Release Day! ✨

📖 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐲𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧

"𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘢𝘺𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩, 𝘓𝘶𝘬𝘦. 𝘕𝘰𝘵 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴. 𝘕𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘺𝘰𝘶."

I was absolutely obsessed with this book! 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐲𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧 created two characters that are so vastly different but completely complement each other. This was a wonderful slow burn romance with a dash of mystery/suspense.

Luke has fought to separate himself from his abusive father for most of his adult life. When he is suddenly named heir to the family business in his father’s will, Luke’s free spirited life is thrown into chaos. Now he has a company he never wanted, mysterious threats against his life and a broody bodyguard.

Calm and composed Elijah is one job away from his dream promotion as the director of the security firm he works for. Unfortunately, his new client has zero desire for a bodyguard and is an adrenaline junkie.

I really can’t stress how much I loved the chemistry between Luke and Elijah. The push and pull from them had me all hot and bothered. The spice was so great once it hit!

"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭 𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱, 𝘓𝘶𝘬𝘦," 𝘩𝘦 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵. 𝘐 𝘧𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘺𝘢𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘩𝘪𝘮 𝘧𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘩 𝘢𝘨𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘴𝘵 𝘮𝘦. "𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘐 𝘸𝘰𝘯'𝘵. 𝘐'𝘷𝘦 𝘯𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘺 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶."

The mystery kept me guessing. I really had so many possible suspects in my mind. I was pleasantly surprised by the reveal!

If you are fan of angsty forced proximity romances with swoon worthy men, add 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐅𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐛𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐲𝐧 𝐍𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐧 to your TBR today! It was fantastic!
