The Sixth Pillar

Rate this book
There is nothing as tragic as man’s inhumanity to man; what triggers such hatred that some are prepared to give up their own existence to destroy another’s way of life?
In his latest action-packed thriller Alan Reynolds explores the conditioning of the jihadists as we follow a young Iraqi, Tariq and his quest for revenge and martyrdom. We also learn about the SAS soldier who has to live with the consequences of war and his own demons of conflict. He attains an odd solace in the isolation of working on a North Sea Oil Rig but these two worlds collide with explosive results.

A very slow burn

There is a clever story woven throughout this rather long read. For me there was too much detail of events and behaviours in the mysterious world of the jihad. A clever climax happened though!

Readers’ Comments
‘I enjoyed this book. It’s pretty pacey and it ends with a bang. However, the author needs to work a little on the ‘comma’. For example, p196, ‘…as they lay together there was no sex, drink and general fatigue had taken its toll…’ should read: ‘…as they lay together, there was no sex. (or ;) Drink and general fatigue had taken…’ Male reader, aged 45
‘Considering the poor cover, this was a surprisingly good read. It was very much character-based and looks at the subject of terrorism and how a boy is manipulated to becaome a ‘martyr for the cause’. A good, solid read. Note, the punctuation is a bit ropey; a good editor would sort it out.’ Female reader, aged 36
‘I liked this entry very much. It looks at many aspects of terorism and the Iraq war. The two elements of the story interwine well and the characters, although a little two-dimensional, work well in a book of this genre. The author is no Hemmingway but he’s just as good as Clive Cussler.’ Male reader, aged 51
