This is the summer Christian is going to learn how to get shit done. Following in the footsteps of his older friends, he’s ready to graduate from petty crimes to more serious offenses, until a stolen wallet leads him on a different path. Inside, he discovers a mysterious “If you’re reading this, I am gone.”
Gripped by a confusing sense of responsibility, Christian seeks out Gabriel, the wallet’s rightful owner. If he can just make sure Gabriel is okay, his conscience can be cleared. He befriends Gabriel as a means to an end, but beneath the guilt a brand new feeling builds at every smile and wink the long-haired boy throws his way.
Each encounter with Gabriel puts Christian at risk— and not just from the cops. The more time he spends with Gabriel, the more he begins to question his friendships, his loyalties, and the kind of life he wants to live. Will he get the chance to change, or will Gabriel discover who he is and force him to face the consequences for his past actions?
I have been a big fan of Sara Alva for years, ever since reading Silent in 2016. Alva doesn’t write as prolifically as many m/m authors, but what she does release, I always love so when I saw she was releasing Loser under her pen name for her YA romance with no on-page sexual content, Sara Luna, I jumped right on it.
Loser is a short, sweet, thoughtful story that delivered just what I’ve come to expect from Luna/Alva, an engaging, flavorful slice of life with characters that felt nuanced and real, perhaps they’re a bit messy but that’s part of what made it so satisfying.
I borrowed this on KU but will buy it on the next double/triple points Kindle Rewards day.
This is a cute short story between two boys. Christian is part of a young gang and one night he robs Gabriel. A note in his wallet makes Christian want to get to know Gabriel but he doesn't expect what kind of feelings that would stir up. Sweet story.
