She is his destiny. During the Third Punic War the final struggle between the Great Empire of Rome and the jewel of the Mediterranean, Carthage, bloodshed, death, and the tears of innocents were commonplace. Despite the horrors he witnessed and endured first hand, Troy Aeros of Cadonia discovered his own vision of heaven in the stormy eyes of a fairy girl. Though they came from opposite sides, he saw her as his friend, his confidante, and ultimately, the dream upon which he pinned his very survival.
He is her savior. Her soul scarred by the tragic deaths of her family, her heart withered by the horrors that she suffered in her youth, Diana Aurelius of Rome had long forgotten what it was to be cherished and loved, had long abandoned hope of peace and tranquility. For ten years she carried the dagger of vengeance within her, sharpening it with her unforgiving hatred. She swore that she would avenge the deaths of her loved ones, no matter the odds, uncaring of the consequences. But when the object of her revenge held her only hope for happiness, Diana faltered, and the longings she had repressed deep within her surfaced once more. A love that conquers and enslaves.
When Troy and Diana met again, it was as enemies: she was the commander of one of Rome's strongest legions; he was a conquered ally of Carthage. Can their love break the vicious circle of hatred and destruction and grant them a new beginning? Or will they lose themselves in the painful web of Bittersweet Revenge

This was one of Ms. James' earlier works, over ten years ago earlier. You can definitely tell from her writing style --the intensity, the violence, the passion, the raw emotions -- that it's her, but I like her more recent works a LOT better. The reason I give this 4 stars is that I love Troy so much but I don't love the Heroine. He's too good for her.
Which is why, having now just read Pure Rapture, if you like the star-crossed lovers theme, it's much more satisfying. Ms. James has certainly honed her craft in the ten years that separated these books!
