I’m the pack reject. The prey.

For years, I've kept myself safe from my small pack's males, hiding in sewers and sleeping in trees to keep their teeth out of my neck. They don’t really want me, just the power and prestige that comes with winning the Hunt. I only want to survive.

In three days, at the Enforcer Games, I'll have one chance to escape. But when the Games begin, and the most powerful shifters in the world arrive at my packlands and scent me, a new Hunt begins.

They’re the princes of our world. And they're willing to break the rules to get me.

Pack Reject is the first book in a new paranormal wolf shifter series from Amazon Top 50 and Vella-bestselling author Merri Bright. Fated mates who are driven to reject each other, powerful enemies in unlikely places, and a fierce heroine who will change the world... if she can survive the Hunt.

Please read the content advisories in the Author's Note. This is a slow burn series where the heroine will not have to choose one mate, if she chooses any at all.

This book felt like it was written by ChatGPT. There were sooo many inconsistencies in the story and several contradictions from one chapter to the next.

Thank you so much for reading Pack Reject! I started writing this series a while back, and put the first chapters up on Vella last year to see if anyone might want to read my take on a classic RH wolf shifter story. I added plenty of Southern touches from my own life, a bit more violence than usual, just enough rejected mate flavor to make it hurt, then put it on the “slow burn” setting for a change. The serial format has been so much fun, but the full-length, edited book is longer, with brand-new chapters and extended scenes. I hope you love it. Be warned, there is a cliffhanger ending!

The next book, Pack Refuge, will be out in summer 2024, and I have some short stories and novellas featuring side characters coming, too. Make sure you’ve joined my newsletter at www.merribright.com for the latest, and follow me on my Ream to have a chance at some exclusive content. Note: The Vella and Ream serial story varies somewhat from the books, but if you’d like to read along as I write, you can subscribe to my Ream: www.reamstories.com/merribright

If you like Flor’s story, please rate, review, recommend, and reach out to let me know. If you need content warnings for any of my books, please go to www.merribright.com or email me Merri@MerriBright.com. I love to hear from readers, and I take kindly worded criticism/advice into account when plotting and planning my next books.

Content Warnings:

Pack Reject contains on-page, graphic violence/death, profanity, decapitation, physical assault, loss of a loved one, mention of past sëxual assault, mentions of past domestic abuse, child abuse, and an incidence of non-consensual spying during a bathing scene. This is a medium-dark, slow-burn reverse harem romance, with scenes that may be disturbing to some readers. Please be kind to yourself when choosing to read.
If you note any Content Warnings that are not listed above, please email Merri@MerriBright.com so I can make sure to add them.

I would feed her every delicacy she ever wanted, starting with the hearts of her enemies, if she would let me kill them for her.

📚 Story Review 📚
ALL THE STARS! I was so excited for Merri Bright to return to paranormal romance. Her The Forgotten Angel series remains one of my top reads, so I had high hopes for her wolf-shifter, rejected mates romance. She delivered exactly what I needed.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. I was immediately pulled into Flor's story and the action didn't let up until that cliffhanger ending. Her strength, in spite of her trauma, is what drew me in. I cheered for her successes and wanted blood for the wrongs done to her.

Every time a new potential mate was introduced, I thought, "Oooh, he's my favorite." By the end, it was Joaquin who stole my heart. I would give my left tit to have a fated mate like him - willing to bring Flor the bodies of her enemies. (Unhinged MMCs always turn out to be my favorites. Sorry to the golden retriever types. I still like you; you fill a role, but give me someone stabby.)

This baby is a slow-burn why-choose romance with a slow-building harem.

Pack Reject is the first book in The Splintered Bond series, ending in a cliffhanger. I cannot wait for the next book.

HIGHLY recommended!

Thank you to Merri Bright for my ARC.

🎧 Audiobook Review 🎧
Dual-style narration by Allie Piper & Ryan Stone

I was so excited to get an advance copy of this book! The narration team was amazing - both VOs were able to nail the individual characters' accents. From Flor's southern drawl, to Brand's deep growl.

I found myself crying at several moments, that while they touched me when I read the ebook, hit even harder with the narrators' performances. Luke in Chapter 35 and that epilogue broke me.

So well done, I can't wait for the rest of this series to be made in audio!

Thank you to Merri Bright and Podium Audio for this ALC.

I am overwhelmed... I am speechless... I am sitting here devastated that I read the final page of this book... I am so not done with these characters yet! You know the feeling when you get so immersed into a story it even haunts you in your dreams? That was "Pack Reject" for me. It was absolutely fabulous, from start to finish, and I wish I could read it for the first time again, and again, and again...

I'm struggling with writing this review, because I don't know how to write something that will truly do justice to the masterpiece I've just read. This book feels a little like Merri re-inventing herself once again. While Flor reminds me a little bit of 'Feather', the past she carries with her influenced her in a different way. She's a little more hardened, the walls around her heart are a little higher and she became a fighter through and through. There is darkness in this book, both in the storyline and the characters, and all the hurt Flor had to endure truly touched my heart.

While I want Flor to find all the love she can embrace, some of her men didn't make the best first (or second) impression. Perhaps they need a bit more time to realize their mate isn't a little girl they need to protect, but a badass that will show them how true power can be packed in a very tiny package. Even though Bearman is my current favorite, closely followed by our mystery man, they all have the power to redeem themselves in the next book. I can't wait to see how Flor's future looks like, and watch her paint the ground red when she finally gives some men the fate they deserve...

This book has everything!!

Fated mates
True mates
Rejected mate
Hunted FMC
Strong FMC
Touch her & ☠️
Enforcer games
Slow burn

Flor has been the pack reject forever and has been hunted by the males in the pack for the last 4 years, if they catch her they may force her to mate. Flor has managed to keep herself hidden and safe.

In a few days time the Enforcer Games will take place and this may be Flor’s only chance to escape.

However other powerful shifters are attending the games and they have also set their sights on Flor.

I loved this book!!! As with all Merri’s books I read it in one sitting, the story just flowed so easily and I got really caught up in everything happening.

I enjoyed that despite Flor’s circumstances, she is badass and a really strong character. Also loved Margarette-great to see some strong female women taking no prisoners.

This book ends on a cliffhanger, though thankfully not as brutal as I thought it would be.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Oh wow, where do I begging with this...

I finished this book yesterday and it took me almost 24 hours for me to finally process it.
Was it good? It was amazing. I dont know what kind of magic Merri has on that brain of hers that all her works are amazing, this is a shifter romance and the first one I read of hers and I am OBSESSED!!! As a woman that started her reading romance journey with shifter romance I can tell you that this book is better that many others the characters are all lovable, you will root for all the heroes and our main character Flor, I had tears in my eyes every time we discover more of her past and how as the pack reject she was treated. And the plot of the story or should I say ALL the plots!!! I have so many theories about what its going to happen and I dont know if my little heart will survive when everything is revealed.
Other thing that I have to give kudos to Merri for is that there is no spice in this book, just like 1 or 2 scenes with some hot stuff but nothing compared to her other books... and I ATE IT, I was so engrossed with the story line and all the twists and turns that I didnt even missed it (well just a bit but bcs I am a bad person).
I cannot wait for the next book, but once this one gets released I will read it once more, because I am sure there are more crumbs there for me to find and add to my theories.

when the trauma and abuse is SO over the top: she had to eat salted rat sandwiches to survive! Another child was scarred as punishment for giving her their sandwich when she was starving! She was hunted endlessly every night for four years and has to sleep in the sewer. It was hard to track who was the alpha and the son and who’s who seemed like inconsistencies happening.

The humor was not for me: using terms like toad f-ers and buttnuggets. She met her fated mates and could leave her bad pack because of that but we are going to draw it out with some plot where she enters a fighting tournament disguised as a boy.

This book had my emotions all over the place. My heart hurts for Flor. What she has been through and still goes through is heartbreaking. But will everything change when Flor meets the Alpha Heirs? Truly an amazing read that I read in one sitting. Can’t wait to read what will happen next. Merri another unputdownable read.

Strong FMC
Protective MMCs
FMC with traumatic past
Fated Mates
Extremely Slow Burn

This is the first book in The Splintered Bonds series. The books must be read in order for maximum enjoyment.

Flor is a young, scrappy woman. She’s had to fight for everything she’s ever gotten. She has always been looked down upon by her wolf pack. She hasn’t been able to shift yet, she has no known family, and is poor. Even worse than their taunts and condescension, the males in the pack are free to try and claim her or one of the other unmarried females in a nightly hunt - whether they want to be mates or not.

Flor has one chance to escape her never ending nightmare when all the packs meet. She must fight for her freedom, defeat an enforcer, and win a place with another pack…while pretending to be a guy. No problem.

To make matters just a little more complicated, some of the visiting wolves take quite an interest in Flor. Fate finds a way no matter how hard Flor runs in the other direction.

As always with Merri Bright's books, I dove right in and let me tell you I was not disappointed. Poor flor she doesn't have it easy she is starved beaten and hunted and she doesn't even know why they treat her that way. She has learned how to hide from those who want to mark and hurt her. Flor doesn't let the pack keep her down she jumps right back up again. She is so much stronger than they give her credit for. No matter what life throws at her, she doesn't stop fighting for a better life for herself. She just needs to get away, but with the other alpha heir there, will she be able to get away like planned?

The world was interesting and some of the plot has me curious, especially the magic stuff, but the h is so anti-mating. This is a romance book and there is no romance! Shes way too consumed with her escape and revenge to care about them. The relationship with the guys is way too buddy buddy for me. She treated them like bros complete with name calling and arm punching. Gag. They’re mostly all simping of course and she’s too damaged for them to take charge and be really alpha with her.

Overall: 2.5, Not the dynamic that I want in a romance book. I will try the next one though because I am curious about the plot and hope that their connection gets better.

Ok, so this series is absolutely awesome!! I had read “Feather” by this author and loved it, but this one may just be even better!! I was beginning to think the entire “pack rejection, why choose” were getting a little played out, but this book completely disputed that theory. This is a fresh new storyline with characters I have fallen in love with!! The FMC is one of the strongest willed I have seen and I’m obsessed! She has some potential mates that could definitely use improvement (come on Luke step up your game) but others who are completely swoon worthy (her mountain man)
Can not wait to see where this story goes! If you haven’t tried it yet you should! Completely refresh my story and world building you do not want to miss!

This was such a great first book in a new series. It is a rejected mate story so be ready for some of the sad feels, and some anger. Flor has had a rough rough life and is just trying to get out alive. Luke’s story is also sad as it starts to be uncovered, but also can be frustrating to a certain degree. I loveee brand and glen and Joaquin. Finn is probably my least favorite, he’s mostly not nice to Flor throughout the entire book and we only kind of know his reasons, and I don’t agree with what I do know so that doesn’t help.

I’m so excited for book 2 which I think comes out later this month so YAY!!!!

I don’t even know how to start this review other than this book was absolutely brilliant and I couldn’t put it down. I was utterly addicted to the story from the first page of book 😍

I’ve read Merri for a while now and I love her books so much but this 1 gave me a little something extra I don’t even know myself. It had such a strong storyline with so much going on that you just get lost in the world of Flor and pack life 🖤

We meet Flor who is the pack reject, she is alone and is living her life day to day without knowing what is going to happen next. When other packs start to arrive for a huge wolf get together everything changes.

The twists and turns throughout the story had me not wanting to put the book down without knowing what is happening on the next page first. But then you get sucked into the next part and do the same thing again 😂

I’m so sad the first part of this story has ended, I could read this book over and over again. I absolutely love a wolf shifter story and this just made me love it even more. I feel like im in a book hangover 🥹

I can’t wait to see what happens next with Flor and the other characters 🖤 I love her so much 🖤

This is a darker story with some traumatic themes and violence. The spice is not in this book at all and I’m not even mad about it as the storyline was fantastic it didn’t need any 😍

This was an amazing start to a new series. I loved everything about it. Flor is such a bad-a, and I really feel for her. I hope only good things come her way cause the girl has dealt with enough trauma to last 3 lifetimes. Her mates seem great, but one of them definitely needs to rethink some things, and the other? I understand why he made the decision he did at the end, but I really hope that doesn’t last long. Also, WHAT is Joaquin? He just vanished and I need to know where he went and if he’s coming back. All in all, I need answers and I’m going to have trouble waiting until the next release!

Well, wow!

I just inhaled this book in one sitting and … wow! My emotions are all over the place, my brain wants “more more more”, but I wanted to write this review straight away. The first word that came to mind?

Flawless.

As always with this author, the technical skills of the writing were impeccable, but the overall experience of this story?

Flawless.

I’m already a fan of the “rejected mate” trope, but this slow-burn didn’t start there. Instead, we got to enjoy a wonderfully built story of Flor, and her struggle and fight to survive every day. I fell in love with her, first, and that’s not something I expected. She’s no Mary-Sue, no martyr, or TSTL caricature. She’s fierce, and strong, and going to bloom so beautifully throughout the books - I can’t wait to see it!

Her mates? They are written so well, each a very unique personality and each interacting with Flor in different ways. I enjoyed meeting them, and can’t wait to get to know them better. I enjoyed that they had depth and clear backstory, so they each felt “real”, but that in this case there was no rush to the romance - it’s authentic for these characters, and only whet my appetite for more!

Would I recommend this book? Absolutely!! Well written, fantastic story, genuine and interesting characters. Brilliant launch to the series!

What about the cliffhanger? For me, it was at a good, natural point; painful because I have to wait, but not agonising frustration.

Thanks to the author for a wonderful reading experience!

Complicated storytelling?

This is a complete mess. The story has no rhyme no rhythm. Its completely all over the place. Nothing's completely explained. We're just giving situations, and as we follow the storyline, it just gets Mudier and mudier. I couldn't get a complete full picture of what exactly was going on, why these wolf's were there. Who her mates could be. I just couldn't make heads or tails at all. All I had was our H's trials And tribulations. Which I get, but that somehow becomes the entire story. I needed more to grasp what was going on besides that? And 94% with her luke. I didn't like how that was just thrown in there. It didn't make any sense since our H is very heavy the entire book not wanting men in that way. I actually stopped reading at that point.

Pack Reject by Merri Bright Book 1 in The Splintered Bond Series
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌶💀💀
I wish I had the words to adequately convey the emotional investment I have in these characters. Flor's determination, survival skill and sass makes her one of the best kicka$$ FMC. The wolves that are drawn to her that believe she's their fated mate are Luke the heir to Southern pack, their pack. He has sneakily tried to keep her safe all these years but does not believe he deserves forgiveness. Finnick, the heir to Eastern has a push and pull with Flor but ultimately believes he has to let her go. Glen, ever lovable Glenda from the Northern pack, is charming and kind accepts she has many suiters but his mom, Margarette has a totally different idea. Then Brand, Bearman, heir to the Mountain pack. Big, burly but sweet. Then the mysterious Joaquin, was there front and centre, then suddenly shadows. These characters are wild and vivid. They carried this story and its secrets, turning Pack Reject into a gripping read, filled with action, betrayal, tradegy, strength, finding love and escaping. Merri Bright is a 'one click' author.
Trope
Slow burn. Rejected mate. Reverse Harem. Traumatized FMC. Wolf Shifters. Fated mate. Soulmate.
Quotes:
Joaquin stepped up to my side. “Give me a name, Flor. Just a name, and no girl in your pack will ever have to worry about him touching them again. I’ll tear his hands off for you, my sweet little one, and give them to you to burn.”“That’s the nicest gift anyone’s ever offered to me,” I said with a weak smile. “I might take you up on that.” I sniffled, hoping I wasn’t going to cry again.

Thank you, Mother Moon. Thank you for whatever part of her is mine to care for, to protect, to worship. I will never hurt her.

“Never apologize to me. There’s nothing I will ever be able to do to earn your forgiveness, though I’ll never stop trying. My heart, I will never deserve a rank equal to yours.”

“Good. I love you just like this. Fierce. Unapologetic. Powerful.”
Of all those words, one made my brain stop. “Um, Glen? L-love?” His eyes shuttered. “Yeah, it’s an expression.”

Loved

I couldn't wait to read this book. I love Merri Brights omegaverse so I was excited for a RH read, which is my usual read.
** May Contain Spoilers**

The characters in this book were so easy to be captivated by. After learning more and more about them you understand why Luke did what he did. And you can feel his pain and his sacrifice. His situation definitely broke my heart. Brand was such a teddy bear. I mean, he's fierce but soft as well. I loved his character. Glen definitely makes you swoon but also laugh. Finnick, well I liked his character as well and I'm hoping we get more information on why he did what he did at the end. Because ouch, that definitely hurt and breaks your heart also kind of made me a little mad. His father is a total t00l, trust me you'll feel the same. Joaquin was a pleasant add and I'm super curious to learn more about him. Now our fmc, flor, she definitely goes through some stuff, like a lot. Her pack suck royally. I knew the big secret way at the beginning so it was no surprise to me at the end. I was like I totally saw that coming. Flor did however irritate me with her unforgiving attitude towards luke. She learned why he did what he did and I understand holding a grudge and groveling but he explained and she learned he literally could not do anything I can't say more without giving anything away. But the plot and the characters were amazing. The end with Luke ripped out my heart and had me all up in my feels, while Finn had me going dude wtf?!I had a huge shift in emotions within a short period and I loved it. Flor had me laughing throughout the book with her inner monolgue. Girl is resilient, funny and tough as nails. She is also stubborn as heck. There wasn't really any spice in this book, just soft looking and kissing. But the storyline definitely holds you. I can't wait for book 2. I am hooked. Hoping we get some spice in that one.

A new author for me to read.

Pack Reject tells a story of a downtrodden female pack member, Florida or Flor as most of the pack call her. The verbal abuse, the way the pack treat her, (if that had been me, I would have curled up and given up years ago!!) just years and years of neglect!

But has she given up? Oh hell no!! This is one bada$$, kicka$$ female. She’s managed to outwit/outsmart the males that want “fun” with the reject, the “honour” of claiming her! Becoming Enforcer to the pack means higher up in the pack, so mating Flor is just a means to an end!
Realising she needs to leave the pack and find a new one is going to take entering the Enforcer Games. So that’s what she sets out to do….

Enter the heirs to the wolf shifter world! But Flor isn’t aware of who the heirs are at first. And like most male shifters, they are an entitled bunch! I do wonder if Flor doesn’t pick any of them to be her mate/mates. It takes certain characters time and effort to bring Flor around to their way of thinking.

I cheered, I cried, I hissed/booed and threw my kindle throughout this book. And it’s only the first one (my kindle is now hiding under the duvet 😆) Flor has a wicked sense of humour, an acid tongue that spits out fast one-liners. She help but question and disobey at every turn, (it’s probably the only reason she’s still alive!) The action is movie worthy, the story and the characters will have you thinking of it for days to come.

We get different points of view (always nice to hear what other characters think) we get to realise who Flor is to them.
Were the MMC’s going to bond with the same female? (Most books are a why choose genre at the moment) or has they assumed they would mate separately?
There is also a twist (or a small surprise 🤔) which I didn’t see coming, but I thought was a great idea.

Brand/Finnick/Luke/Joaquin and Glen are all in the running to be her mate. There are a few surprises and a sad moment at the end. But for now, they all have a lot of work earning and keeping Flor’s trust. It’s not going to be an easy ride.

There is a cliffhanger. (What a surprise 😝)
There is minimal spice, but the story is soooooo engrossing, I hardly noticed (and too be honest a little refreshing)

I seriously can’t wait to read the next book.

I’m crying - this filled my cup up so much!

I’ve been looking for a shifter book for ages to kick me into getting back into reading and I am glad I found it in this new release from Merri Bright.

As per usual with her writing, there was laughter and tears, anger and hope.

This isn’t her best work, but it is quite a bit different from her other stuff so I think I was just expecting it to be a bit more original of a storyline than it was, and I did struggle to keep track of characters because of how the writing flowed at times - in saying this, the small issues do not detract at all from the enjoyment of the read, and I would recommend 100%

- slow burn as to be expected - strong FMC - strong foundation for a good series moving forward - it’s just the predictability factor that may keep me from jumping into the next in the series at the release date - but I know that I won’t be disappointed reading on - 5/5 stars

Pack Reject is my first book by Merri Bright! She came highly recommended by an author friend. Merri did not disappoint. This is only my second shifter series and I can’t wait for book 2 to come out.

Flor is a member of a pack, if you want to call it that. I call it a cult due to the horrible Alpha who runs the pack. Flor has not shifted yet; she is considered unranked, so the Alpha decides that she should be hunted - hunted for almost 4 years (she has 3 nights left) when the story starts. Flor is basically alone in the pack. Her only friend is Del, who is a former Enforcer, who is now treated like a reject also.

Del helps her escape and to hide until the Enforcer Games begin. Entering the Enforcer Games, Flor hopes to leave the Southern Pack and find a new pack. Hiding outside of the pack perimeter she meets Finn, Brand and Glen (Alpha Heirs). Luke is the Alpha Heir from Flor’s pack but he has been keeping a secret.

Flor is a sassy, strong FMC. The Alpha Heirs all think she is THEIR true mate. Oh to have that power over so many men! Swoon!

This book does end in a cliff hanger BUT it is going to be worth the weight.

Some of my favorite quotes:
“Welcome to life at rock bottom, Your Heir- ness.”

“In every way that mattered, Del was my real dad.”

“She looked like some sort of forest nymph, . . .
She was a vision. A goddess. And I couldn’t look away.”

“He looked up, his eyes as blue as the ocean must be, and deep—and captured me, drawing me in, drowning me. Remaking me.”

“You are not a show. You are one of the wonders of the world,” I thought he murmured. But that was crazy.”

“What if I was wrong? What if I had just stabbed my true mate in the guts?”

“How am I suddenly catnip for shifters?”

“Did I… Did I lick him?” Oh, please let that part have been a dream. No such luck. “Mhmm.”

I have yet to read a book from Merri Bright that I haven’t enjoyed and I absolutely devoured this book. If you are looking for a slow burn angsty read with shifters where the fmc has seen some hardship this one should definitely make your tbr. Touch her and die vibes while also having a main fmc who can kick butt and take names. Very much looking forward to the next book.

Flor is a resilient and determined young woman who has had to fight for everything she's achieved. Despite being scorned by her wolf pack, unable to shift, with no known family, and living in poverty, she remains undeterred. Her situation is worsened by the pack's males, who are allowed to pursue and claim her or any other unmarried female during nightly hunts, regardless of their wishes.

Flor sees a glimmer of hope for escape when all the packs gather. To secure her freedom, she must defeat an enforcer and earn a place with another pack, all while disguised as a male. It's a daunting task.

Complicating matters further, some of the visiting wolves become particularly interested in Flor. Despite her attempts to evade them, fate has its own plans.

I will be waiting impatiently for the next book 🔥

So good

I don't even know if I can do a review that brings this book justice! I love Merri Bright's books and this is some of her best work.

Flor is the pack reject and is hunted by the males in the pack. They hunt her because if they catch her they can force her to mate them and Flor is strong and has managed to keep away from them.

She wants to join the Enforcer Games because this can be her chance to escape and be free but other strong packs show up and things start to change.

So much happens in this book and it is so good. So many twist. Pack Reject is a slow burn book without a lot of spice but that is okay with me. That cliffhanger was killer though and can't wait for the next one.
