But when Iris finds herself stranded in the middle of nowhere with a broken beast of man who in no way resembles the so-called international sex symbol, she realizes that she does have quite a lot to lose after all.

⭐️⭐️ two stars -

Two disappointed stars for this one, and it really pains me to give it a measly two stars since I am a fan of the author, Natasha Anders.

When fellow readers here on Goodreads ask me to suggest a book to them as confirmation of friendship, I always reply “A Ruthless Proposition by N Anders”. It’s one of my all-time favorite romance reads, and I have zero qualms recommending that book.
* you can find my review of that stellar romance read here 👉 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I even follow the author on both Amazon and Goodreads so I’ll know whenever she publishes a new book. A lot of her “new releases” of late have been re-releases of previously published work, so I was very excited to see a brand new tale offered by Anders released this month (June 2024). Bonus points since it was free with my beloved Kindle Unlimited, so i immediately downloaded it and settled into my favorite chair for what I was anticipating to be a wonderful romance read.

Unfortunately that is not at all what is offered here. I don’t know what happened to my favorite author of a favorite book (“Ruthless”), but it can’t be the same person that penned this story. I felt as if I was watching a bad play - one where all the action takes place in a boring one-scene act - you know, where the setting never changes. Boring and dull.

The story started off immediately with action, which I appreciate, and Anders does this well. It just kept on going and going with the same setting - a dark and stormy night at our poorly described Hero’s home. Besides the frustration with the lack of scene change, her lack of character development and description was also annoying. I was already bored with the setting, and then I was bored with the poorly developed characters and overall storyline.

At about the 18-19% mark, I gave up and skimmed to see if I had any interest in any of the upcoming plot. The answers is, “no, I didn’t”. Not even in the sexy scene - also blah for the one I found, and I ended up skipping the rest of the book.

This is unfortunately a dnf for me for the dull plotline, the poor character description, and believe it or not - the potty mouth of our heroine. Maybe I’m getting too old, but I don’t like to read about a mc who curses like a sailor. That just turned me off right out of the gate at page one. 💁‍♀️

If you’re new to Anders, pass on this one. Lots of fellow reviewers really like her popular “The Unwanted Wife”, which I didn’t care for, but lots of other people like it. My review for that book is here 👉 https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Two small stars.

This started off so well!

Angst - Decent✅
Instant dislike/hate-to-love - Great✅
Forced proximity - Awesome✅
Stranded in the wilderness - Fabulous✅
Hero - INCREDIBLY bad at hero-ing🚫

The hero's attitude and actions towards the heroine were atrocious! Don't get me wrong, me and my questionable standards (in books) usually love these toxic and angsty stories. But I need to see some A++ groveling, and for the hero to have a somewhat reasonable explanation (not an excuse) but a reason for his actions.

This hero did NOT do that though. And after all the information was laid out, his reason for being such an asshole to her didn't make any sense. He did NOT have a good, or even good enough reason for the trauma he put her through. ('good enough reason'😅 that didn't sound too right🤦🏼‍♀️, but you get my drift.)

About halfway through the book, the hero also uttered these words: "Hashtag-woke-up-like-this", 😖 which was bad enough on its own, but it was made much worse by HIM saying it... It felt so out of character for him. And the context in which he said it, didn't do him any favours either. It actually made it downright criminal. Not as criminal as his poor hero-ing skills, but a crime nonetheless.

So, for that and all the heinous crap he put the heroine through, I sentence this man to high-fiving King Kong.💀

Natasha Anders is one of my fave authors, and she writes top-notch angst, in my opinion.
But, you can't love'em all, and this one just didn't work out for me.

I'm so sorry but this was terrible 😭 This man commits THREE separate awful acts against the heroine and grovels THREE times and none of them were enough. I'm shocked at how bad this managed to be

5 "You make it better just by being here..." Stars!

Wowza, it's been a while since I have been this emotionally invested in a couples story. Trystan and Iris had me hooked from the beginning, from their unconventional first meeting to their slightly predictable parting, and their eye-wateringly sweet reunion.

I had quite a few chuckles along the way as well, especially in the early stages of the book when grumpy Trystan, and Sunshine Iris are getting to know each other. The adorable dog Luna and little snippets of characters from the authors previous books added to this story as well, and I loved reading every minute of it.

The levels of angst, romance, drama were broken up by lighter moments, and as always the author excelled at writing a damaged asshole you cannot help but fall for, especially when he lays it all on the line in the latter stages of the book to try and make amend for his epic screw up.

ARC generously provided by the author via Booksprout, in exchange for the above honest review.

I enjoyed this! It had good angst. I would rate it 3.5 stars. I originally rounded down, but on second thought rounded up. I found the storyline to be a bit far-fetched. I loved how cruel the H was. He really was a piece of work. He needed to grovel a lot, which is why I rounded up.

I wanted to give this book 3.5-4 stars initially but as it went on I loved it less. It starts off with the H being an epic asshole to the point where I was like surely now he’ll relent, but no. He was really bad and it just kept getting worse lol but luckily this is fiction and I like that 🤪 then we find something out eventually that makes his assholeishness in the beginning especially even more unconscionable and I was like wtf. That’s when things started to turn a bit for me. I can get down with an asshole H, but that made no sense.

Also there’s a side character who the second they’re introduced you know they’re evil and going to betray a certain character and exactly how and the repercussions that will have on Tristan and Iris’ relationship. I get that that person is a plot device, but make it a little less obvious from the get go. I want to be duped and upset by their betrayal as well! And then the repercussions of that dragggged. And honestly Tristan is just kinda annoying, his grovel didn’t hit right, they didn’t know each other long enough for these feelings to be what they were or for any trust to be there and he just fucked up one too many times in one too many ways and I was just over it.

So anyway, somehow I still kinda liked it and there’s a cute dog so 👍 oh also, there’s a ton of crossover from some of Natasha Anders’ other books and now I want to read/reread some of them 👀

It literally pains me to give beloved authors such low ratings for their work but this book was really disappointing.
Apart from the inexplicable insta-lust/love from both the MCs that was bordering really close to Stockholm Syndrome, the unoroginal and utterly predictable plot and fall-out, the story managed to get me furious in the end regarding

10 stars!!!

"I'm sorry," he whispered, daring a glance upward, not sure what he'd find, not sure he wanted her to see the despair on his face, but unable to help himself. Her eyes were gleaming with unshed tears, her expressive face nakedly vulnerable.
"I'm so fucking sorry. I wish there were bigger words than sorry. I wish there were massive, mountain-sized epic fucking words to describe my despair and regret. But I'm stuck with I'm sorry. I can promise you the world, only I know you don't want it... I don't know what you want. But I kind of hoped you would be okay with just me. Trystan Abbott.
I know I'm weak and flawed, and kind of an arsehole. I make mistakes, I say and do dumb shit, but my one true redeeming feature was being loved by you once. And the only thing I'm capable of doing truly right in this world is loving you back."

THIS IS, HANDS DOWN, ONE OF THE BEST READS FOR ME THIS YEAR!!!

This is a story of two people: Trystan and Iris.

He is one of the most famous actors, currently in hiding, seeking solace in need to find the meaning of life and the sense of his career after a tragic accident that killed his friend and almost ended his life.

She is a writer at heart, taking her baby steps as a journalist. A daughter of an infamous journalist known for his unscrupulous ways to seek the truth. One day she is offered a chance to interview the famous Trystan by his agent and she jumps on this opportunity.

And that's how their story starts.

And OH-MY-FUCKING-GOD!!!

I couldn't unglue myself from this book.

What you are sure to find in here:

❤️ slow burn elements

❤️ beautifully layered, complex characters who grow throughout the story

❤️ the hero who fucks up really bad and grovels and I mean GROOOOVELS like his life depends on it

❤️ a fantastic heroine who knows her worth, has a spine and moral code made of steel despite all the shitty stuff she has to face

❤️ a beautiful, heartbreaking story of two broken souls who struggle to find their way to be together

And then there's me at the end, crying like I just got a WiFi signal in the middle of a desert.

All in all, there's only one thing I can say here:

READ THE BOOK!!!

You won't regret a thing!!!

I hate this book so much. I hate everything about it. Horrible storyline. Unlikable characters. It’s like she read an article about anxiety and figured she was an expert to write a main character with it. Natasha Anders’s books are going in the wrong direction. They keep getting worse. Unwanted wife is still one of my favorites. I hope it can go back.

I have been waiting for a book like this!

One of my favorites books that I have read over and over again is The Unwanted Wife. I have been looking for another book with a similar trope and feel but nothing has come close. This book has given me what I’ve been looking for and then some! Very well done and this book will definitely be added to my re-read list for sure!

Trystan had it all. Fame, fortune and the world at his fingertips. That all changed after a terrible accident left him broken, wanting nothing more than to be left alone in his new reclusive lifestyle.

Iris is chasing her dream of becoming a reporter and can’t believe her luck when she gets the opportunity to interview Trystan Abbott. This could be the thing that kickstarts her career. However, Trystan is not the man she expected and he doesn’t want to be bothered. It’s too bad that a storm traps her with him and the forced proximity leads to a journey with many bumps before everything smooths out in the end.

I really loved this book. It has a gripping storyline and there’s plenty of angst and emotional content to keep you glued to the pages. You’re going to love the amount of groveling Trystan does to make up for his mistakes. I know I did! Very well done!.

Honestly, I read this book just for the drama.

Iris is a young journalist that somehow manages to get the opportunity of a lifetime: to interview Trystan, a famous actor that has gone into hiding after his girlfriend's tragic death. Iris is excited to meet her hero, but all that changes when she gets stuck on a storm and is rejected by him, who claims that he doesn't know who she is. But the storm gets so bad that he has no other choice but to take her as an unwanted guest for two weeks. Obviously they get to know each other and realize that maybe they are not that different.

There is a lot of drama and unnecessary conflicts, but I liked it anyways.

DNF. I tried to push through this one but I was so bored. The chemistry between these characters was not believable and was rather lacking.

I’m just a man. A weak, dumb, often foolish, human male. I’m smaller than my fame, more ordinary than my legend, and I’m fucking nothing without you, Iris.”

My whole heart right now. This tugged at every heart string I never knew I had and I fell hard and fast for Trystan and Iris's story. It was everything; emotional, romantic, heart breaking, and with the most epic grovel I have read in a really long while.

If you love a grumpy/sunshine, modern beauty and the beast vibes, with a fierce heroine and a tortured grump of a hero, you need this book.

Iris gets the chance of a lifetime when she lands an interview with a movie star turned recluse, Trystan Abbott. But when she stumbles to his doorstep after her car breaks down, welcoming is the last thing that Trystan exudes. In fact he's downright rude, dismissive, and colder than the icy wind outside. She may be there for a legitimate reason, but he doesn't believe her and doesn't need her breaking his sulking reclusively. Trystan takes every opportunity to kick Iris out of his house, but when a bad storm hits, he begrudgingly allows her to stay until it passes.

When I tell you I absolutely loved Iris. This is a woman who has a heart of gold, integrity, and isn't shy about holding her ground and standing up for herself. The connection between these two is a slow build, but when it hits, oh man does it hit good.

One of my top favorite books by this author is The Unwanted Wife, and this gave me such similar vibes but in a very different way. I love when an MMC makes a huge mistake and then has to grovel, and oh my god does Trystan mess up. The man makes a mistake that you want to hate him for. But when he grovels, he GROVELS. And Iris doesn't just let him off the hook with a simple apology. Oh no. She makes him work for it. But not because she's vindictive. Simply because she's a woman who knows her worth and isn't about to settle for less. I loved that about her so much.

This story was EVERYTHING and I devoured it in one sitting. An angsty, emotional punch of a story with an unforgettable romance that owned my heart from beginning to finish.

I first found Natasha Anders in 2012 with her first book, it blew me away! 12 year later and every book I read from her is still magic. Iris wants to be a writer but her obligations have stalled her career so when she is offered the story of a lifetime she can't pass it up. Traveling to Africa to write a story about the world famous heart throb actor Trystan Abbott. He is going to be what catapults Iris's career, then her car has some problems and a horrible storm happens. With no other option and barely any phone battery Iris ventures out to find Trystan and safety. When she finds him she also finds a man who has no idea she's coming and has no desire to let her write anything about him or even help her in the middle of the night while also in the middle of nowhere.

Finding her way inside after not an easy start Iris finds herself stuck with a furious Trystan for two weeks during a bad storm. He doesn't trust her or wants her there and he may just hate her. Iris is sure she can clear this all up if she could only get ahold of his manager but as the days go by it's clear that isn't as easy as it should be. What started out as her dream job has turned into her nightmare but two weeks is a long time to stay cooped up with someone and not get to know them and soon Trystan's anger starts to thaw and they both find themselves falling into something they never could have expected.

But the roads will clear soon and its back to the real world where Trystan is a world famous actor who after his accident and the death of his girlfriend are the only thing people can talk about and Iris isn't so sure she wants a part of that life or that he will want her once back to reality. With both of them agreeing that what they have is worth the risk neither could have guessed the turn their lives are about to take.

I loved this book Iris is sweet and kind and loves the people in her life maybe to a fault putting her life somewhat on hold for them. Trystan is an angry hurt world famous actor everyone wants a piece of. And though these two shouldn't work they fit together perfectly. I loved these two together, and I love the angst and conflict Natasha Anders is so amazingly great at creating. I didn't want to put this book down and loved every minute reading this book. Like all her others I fell right into this world and didn't want to leave.

This is a summer must read, if you love Natasha Anders you wont be disappointed, if you never dipped your toe's into her books and just want or need a great book then this is your book but be warned you will be picking up her other books after this.

*Thank you Natasha Anders for this ARC for my review.

Have To Pretend Like This Man Isn't Flagged With Several Real Life Personality Types That Are Doing A Lot Of Real Life Disgusting Stuff Like Genocide And SexPesting

(looks like going to have to start emailing myself Anders reviews, because like Shen, they think Zionism and Apartheid is a normal happenstance, a woopsie if you will)

So this MMC is a product of the Neoliberal system that normalises oppressing other nations.

Speaking truth to power is often annoying for the white women.

If he has fired you, then he has weaponised that you are financially insecure, similar to how Israel bomb Palestine, because they have no funds to bomb back.

Not sure why White Women need to know how the weaponiser and dehumaniser feels but here we are, but then, Zionists be like that and he did go learn from Genociders.

This man makes a lot of narcissistic choices, especially at the end when he centers his own feelings in how he hurt her.

I am unconvinced of the background that you created for this character, for she has none of the physical side effects a poor person or a poor carer, would manifest for the constant pressure that is on your body.

Instead she still manifests reactions like a rich valley girl who knows what privilege feels like.

But Trystan humiliated her and then isn't forced to emotionally sit with the fact he repeatedly demonstrated subpar tissue tolerance towards others.

But he learns from Mossad and thats the personality type he will be allowed, because white women are obsessed with the Cult of Domesticity they impose on themselves.

Meanwhile, authentic feminists recognise the systems hes weaponising against her.

This isn't love, this is a trauma bond that he weaponises emotionally and financially against her, to sooth his ego.

Maybe its attractive to want a toddler but some of us want adults who have put down the Krav Maga.

The author snuck this book by me. Here I thought she was continuing her series from Don't pretend I'm yours, but instead we got this standalone book, which I was excited about.

Unfortunately, it seemed to stall for me, just like her previous one, Don't pretend I'm yours did. I grew disinterested around 60% then slowly got back into it toward the end.
It started off engaging enough- Iris becoming inadvertently trapped by former superstar (now reclusive) Trystan and then them letting down their defenses and hitting it off. Seemed a bit quick and unrealistic for me and what Trystan did to her in the beginning was really unforgivable. I don't think there was enough grovel to justify it. He makes amends and THEN when they get back to the real world, he basically imprisons her again (in a different way) due to something he assumed she did. WHAT?!

I did kind of feel bad for him, but he screwed her over twice and I still don't think he did enough to show repentance.. ugh I long for the author's "Ruthless proposition" like scenarios where the character can be cruel but how he comes back to being decent is a full on journey that makes sense, and takes time and work.

I'm disappointed in the last 2 books I've read by this author...I'm still hopeful that there is more to come that showcase her talent for digging deep and producing beautiful scenarios and characters, and everything that I used to love by her. I remain optimistic.

read via the Beautiful Villain anthology…so the story might be totally different — feeling like a 2 stars tho 🫢

— def Beauty and the Beast vibes with the locked room, hostility and friendliness, father drama, instalove, etc. 🥀

— the story felt rushed and incomplete, especially towards the end
> i get where she was coming from, but she gave him an ultimatum
> the rushed confessions of love did not feel right, how do you love each other already

— i don’t like how they go into a steamy scene right after a highly emotional one! like hello, give each other time to process before you attack each other LOL
> seriously, i was crying at this point and the switch made my tears dry up so fast 😭

— their back and forth from being hostile to friendly to hostile and friendly again quickly became tiring

I loved this novel! I have read other novels by this author and loved them and this novel did not disappoint. One of my favorite novels that I reread frequently is written by this author and I know that I will be rereading this novel again and again. From the very first chapter this novel reached across the pages and grabbed hold of my heart and held on tight. This author is so good at grabbing your attention and taking you on an emotional journey. Once again she did not disappoint. I loved the characters, Trystan and Iris. Trystan had it all and due to a tragic accident was struggling to go on. I love a damaged hero. I loved the emotional journey Trystan and Iris embarked on. Their chemistry was so good! At times I wanted to shake Trystan, but I loved their journey. I can't wait to see what this author has coming next. I loved this novel! It was so good!

Another winner from Natasha Anders

Whenever I read a book by Natasha Anders, I know I’m in for some delicious, angsty goodness in a unique package. Uncommon settings, well-plotted storylines, and flawed but ultimately lovable characters who experience and overcome trials. Inescapable lives up to this expectation. It gives a fresh, unpredictable take on the celebrity romance story.
Tropes include:
Movie star hero
Forced proximity
Bully romance (without being dark)

I appreciated how the story dealt with the themes of grief, fears (vs phobias), and what impacts how we decide which career and life goals to pursue. I also enjoyed the clever approach to the epilogue.
I’ll be excitedly awaiting Natasha’s next book!

3.5 Inescapable stars

I didn't particularly care for Tryston. Now, to be clear, I don't have a problem with an alphahole, but the behavior has to work. He knew who she was and why she was there, so the way he treated Iris was anything but sexy, romantic or loving and certainly not conducive to a love affair. The sum total of their relationship only existed for about two weeks in a home cut off by bad weather and flooding. We never got to to see them navigate a relationship in a "real world" setting or see Iris become that bestselling author and how Tryston would navigate. that. Also, I love a good grovel, but I don't think he really redeemed himself

I am in love with this book. Honestly. I have no words for how emotional I got in the middle half of the book (during the river scene and the aftermath). The second emotional scene where he throws her out of his car after the article was also wonderfully written and the aftermath of that was just *chef's kiss*. Their reunion was good, but it could have been even more emotional and heartwrenchingly beautiful. I loved this book and immediately recommended it to my book bestie just for how emotional I got reading this.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Inescapable

For all those readers who are sick of reading books about enemies snowed in together, this is so not like that.
Iris is hoodwinked by a movie star’s Manager into turning up to the Star’s hideaway for an interview. The Actor, Trystan, won’t let her inside while a storm is raging outside. Ever resourceful Iris enters via the dog door to seek shelter until morning.
A stand off ensues with Trystan locking her in a guest suite for days as the storm continues. But Iris has a phobia about being locked in anywhere and she starts to mentally unravel. What happens? Well you need to read this yourself. You won’t be disappointed.
