Sir Geoffrey Peneven and his family come to Cornwall to inspect their inheritance and immediately find themselves caught up in a trap that Sir Michael Tresawle has laid for John Treveague. Smuggled goods, deliberately planted, are found on the Estate. John is obliged to flee from the arresting dragoons in order to try to prove his innocence. Again we are swept up in the events of the day and nobody remains unchanged by these events. Sir Michael however, remains determined to destroy John and begins to reveal more of his unpleasant character, making enemies for himself in the process and his new mistress adds further conflict. A financial setback almost costs John his chance of future happiness. Whilst in Cornwall, all members of the Peneven family have cause to question their position in life, something that had seemed so secure before their visit.
The first of a series in the Treveague Family Saga set in Roseland, Cornwall. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book that is set in the 18th century with themes of shipwreck, smuggling and love. I passed it onto my 81 year old father who has now devoured the entire series and is now starting on a subsequent trilogy set in modern times.
