From Wall Street Journal bestselling author James Chandler comes the seventh book in the Sam Johnstone legal thriller series. This page turner is perfect for fans of John Grisham, James Patterson, and C.J. Box.
James Chandler spent his formative years in the western United States. When he wasn't catching fish or footballs, he was roaming centerfield and trying to hit the breaking pitch. After a mediocre college baseball career, he exchanged jersey No. 7 for camouflage issued by the United States Army, which he wore around the globe and with great pride for twenty years before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel of Air Defense Artillery. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Eastern Oregon University and a Master's degree from Marshall University. He earned his Juris Doctor by attending night school at the George Mason University School of Law while assigned to the Pentagon, and practiced law in Wyoming for twelve years before his appointment to the bench. When he isn't working or writing, he'll likely have a fly rod, shotgun or rifle in hand. He and his wife are blessed with two wonderful adult daughters and one grandson. He is a recipient of the Western Horizon Award. He loves to hear from readers and can be reached at james@james-chandler.com.
This series is a blend of legal thriller along with Sam Johnstone’s personal life - his struggles with PTSD, alcoholism and his relationship issues with women. The trial scenes are interesting as they detail the defense of a woman who is on trial for killing her husband, who she says has abused her for years. Sam’s romantic relationship has deteriorated into less romance and more crazy stalker territory. Sam’s personal and professional worlds collide when his stalker threatens his assistant and his new client. Actually the crazy stalker story angle overshadows the legal portion of the book to some degree. Sam as a main character shows his flaws, struggles and his perseverance to overcome those struggles.
Course of Conduct, the seventh book in the Sam Johnston legal thriller series, is hands down the best. I’ve enjoyed each of the previous books, and through those six books got to know Sam Johnston and the rest of the recurring cast of characters.
This book brought several of the recurring cast into more prominent roles in the story as well and brought a brighter spotlight to Sam’s personal life. His personal life takes center stage throughout the story as it unfolds. Of course, Sam gets involved in a murder trial that challenges his legal acumen.
Like I said, I believe this book to be the best of the series. However, a few unanswered questions were raised in this book that leads this reviewer to expect book eight to be even better.
If you’ve read the first six books, grab a copy and tuck in for another Sam Johnston thriller that will keep you guessing all the way to the last page.
I received an Advance Reader Copy of Course of Conduct from the publisher and chose to provide my review.
Course of Conduct is a story in which Sam analyses his work as a lawyer, his life with PTSD, being an alcohol dependent, and his relationships with women. He is dating a beautiful but time demanding blonde, Mickey, when he gets involved in defending an orthopedic surgeon, Stephanie, who first hit her husband and later on allegedly killed him in self-defense. It's a difficult trial as she stabbed him on the back and there were no signs of a break-in or fight. Although she says she was a victim of domestic abuse nobody knew about it. As the trial continues, Sam's relationship with Mickey turns suffocating and he wants out but she seems not to understand it, at the same time the doctor (and client) keeps on making advances against him. The story has a consistent and well put together plot with a surprising end. Course of Conduct is an engaging and entertaining read and highly recomended! I thank Mr. Chandler and his publisher for this ARC.
I received an ARC through "Severn River" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
This story starts with Sam initially representing Stephanie on a domestic battery charge. Sam later learns after another altercation, that Stephanie is now accused of murdering her husband. At issue is the fact that Stephanie told the police that she stabbed her husband, Jake. Sam has determined that based on what he has learned to claim it was self-defense.
Read along and learn what Sam develops for her defense. Read how the case is presented in court and what odds he is facing. Besides the court case, Sam is being harassed by Mickey, one he was seeing and who was saying that she was his girlfriend and as a result causing trouble with Sam's clients as well as others that were in Sam's circle.
Read the exciting conclusion and discover how Sam makes out with the jury as well as what event involves Mickey.
This was a fascinating, riveting story—the doctor wife/abusive husband syndrome. Self-defense is of issue as opposed to murder in the book. Then tie in the recent upgrades of technology, and the story really gets exciting. Then put into the mix the experts' testimonies helping to swing the jury one way or another, or is she guilty as charged of murder? That is for the reader to figure out. I am not sure I liked the ending. But I did like the overview of "Battered Women's Syndrome" by the hired psychologist/expert in her field. She sure would have convinced me of the situation. However, I believe she was not familiar with the latest technology and a highly intelligent individual who was also a physician who could probably set the course according to her way of thinking.
As in his previous books, James Chandler weaves a story with more turns and twists than the creeks that the main character, Sam Johnstone, fishes to relax and relieve stress. Thick again with deep legal processes, Chandler appropriately explains those processes in a way that holds the readers’ attention and teaches them about the science and art of “lawyering.” We learn even more about Johnstone and the characters in Sam’s surrounding area in this one; the plot is steady and the ending another twist for the reader. Chandler delivers again; get this one as soon as you can and look forward to #8 in the future.
James Chandler’s newest installment of his Sam Johnstone Series was just released (in May), “Course of Conduct.” Sam is a disabled vet (lost a leg in Afghanistan) who battles PTSD and alcoholism, and practices law in a small Wyoming town. He is called upon to defend an orthopedic surgeon who killed her abusive husband claiming self-defense, while at the same time, having to deal with an old “girlfriend” who is stalking him. He and Cassie (his secretary) have their hands full trying to figure out who the “good guys” and the “bad guys” are. The author even throws in somewhat of a surprise ending as an added treat. I particularly like the way he describes the courtroom scenes.
I have enjoyed previous books written by James Chandler. For the most part, I enjoyed this book except for the trial sequence. It just drug on an on. I had already figured out that she actually did kill her husband and she was going to alleviate Mickey. I just hadn't figured out how she would go about it. He can sure pick them can't he? All things considered it was still a good easy read. I like his books because you don't have to wade through all the gutter talk. it is more about plot, characters, not about sewer mouth talk. Look forward to the next one.
I've read this series in sequence and have decided I won't be reading any more after this one. The first three or four were rather unique in context, character, and plot, to some extent. Chandler seems to have taken the lazy method during the last three: a significant amount of copy-and-paste from previous books to the point of repetition, redundancy and boredom. I'm glad I was able to read these for free through Kindle unlimited, but even that's insufficient to entice me to read any more.
I’ve read all of the books prior to this one in this series. This one was my favorite. Chandler keeps you in suspense while walking you through legal procedures that aren’t included in prime time TV. It’s a bit of education while drawing you into a twisting plot. I didn’t see the ending coming. I usually have a hunch and keep reading to see if I’m right and how they get to the conclusion. I didn’t see this ending coming! James Chandler is an excellent author. Thank you for your gift for writing.
Magnificent series! While defending a woman charged with murder, attorney Sam Johnston is pursued not only by her, but a woman from his recent past as well. Neither woman accepts his repeated rejections and both are a bit unhinged. This riveting tale has well drawn characters, a complex plot, and is masterfully crafted. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
I gave it 3 stars because I would feel bad giving it a 2. The surgeon had no class; given her education, she should speak more eloquently and demonstrate some self-control in court. The Mickey situation was ridiculous, as the author seemed to think she was important; at the very least, make it believable.I read the entirety of this book because I became invested after 100 pages in. I will seriously think a long time before reading another book from this author.
Defense attorney Sam finds himself facing dangerous situations. How will this all end for him. Things seem to be happening from all directions. Full of suspense and questions that will have you binge reading and wanting more from this amazing author. Right up there with one of my favourite writers, James Patterson.
I just love Attorney Sam Johnstone and his attitude! John Chandler is an exceptional writer! 👏 I strongly recommend this series, oh and the cliffhanger is just unfair since I can't just open the next book and start reading...I have to wait until April of 2026. Ugh
I’ve read the previous books in order for this author. Seems to me like this last book number seven, he chose parts of other books to fill in space. He’s redundant and seems like he took the easy way out. Plot seven repetitive. And at times dull. I will not be reading anymore of his books. I think I’ll just move onto something more interesting.
Sam the attorney gets himself involved with crazy women everywhere you look and without him doing anything. Can't help but like the guy. Too bad its another year before the next book comes out. Each story is so good
Sam Johnstone books are very compelling and full of fun twists and turns. His relations with friends and experts in the legal profession along with his love interest entanglements make for good reading.
This is a really entertaining and informative murder trial novel that informs about the results of a hung jury and what seems to be the eventual justice that will be afforded to a client who thinks she has outwitted the results of a course of conduct where she assumes she has bettered the system.
The book has good flow. Starts out interesting not just setting forth some meaningless blather full of names that you can't possibly remember. Gets a little silly towards the end but I guess you have to finish somewhere.
Pure James Chandler with several twists and turns. If you like legal thrillers that marry some of the most current legal theories with the latest in technological deceptions, you’ll enjoy this easy read.
Great series. I've enjoyed seeing Sam's personal growth as he fights his demons. Looking forward to book #8. Hope he finds a decent, normal woman or of these days.
