Chrissy Peebles, a practicing nurse, has always loved reading and writing fantasy from the earliest age she can remember. She plotted every single twist she could think of during bedtime stories for her children. When her little ones begged for more adventures, she felt confident enough to let her overeager imagination and sense of humor spill out into her first novel. She lives in Ohio with her husband, two young kids, one hamster, three dwarf hamsters and cat. When she's not taking the kids to Little League soccer, basketball, or baseball, she loves to snap photos as her favorite hobby.
My advice would be check out the number of books in the series and the cost before you start reading, these are all free individually anyway but for example there's at least six books in the Ruby Ring series so it can work out expensive.
Eternal vows
I read this book back in 2012 and wanted to continue on so I checked the reviews for the next book 'Eternal Destiny' and they were all good, really good so I downloaded the book and got started. Now at this point I wasn't reviewing, I'd only written one review and that was for a book written by a friend of a friend which I'd been surprised to discover I really enjoyed, not my genre, anyway 'Eternal Destiny' had gaping holes in the story, parts of it didn't make sense at all and bits contradicted other parts. This book is one of the reasons I started reviewing because I couldn't understand how a book which obviously didn't make sense could get 5 star reviews, had these people not read the book and there's no argument that it didn't make sense since changes had to be made to the first book and a character taken out completely just to make it fit, so while I personally no longer read books by this author I did enjoy the first book enough to buy the second and had that made sense I would most likely have continued on.
My original review from November 2012 beware contains SPOILERS ######## I don't often review books and I've never given a negative review before. I read the first book (free read) and the reviews were so good I purchased the second now I'm confused because no one else mentioned it but they seem very good at spotting the ruby immortal rings so when they killed Grace thinking she was Elizabeth no one noticed that she wasn't wearing one which, since it was common knowledge she was mated to Charles she should have been. Then thinking that they'd killed Elizabeth no one seemed at all surprised that Charles was still alive when he would have died when she did. I've given this book only 1 star because this spoilt the rest of the book for me I only continued reading in the hope that this would somehow be explained away, now I did skim read the rest since my heart was no longer in it so if I missed the answer let me know but as it stands I won't read anything by this author again.
A comment was made about my review by Donna Johnson explaining that she would fix this problem, apparently she's gone back to book one and changed the ending and completely taken out Prince Charles leaving Sarah to go looking only for Gloria. Hopefully this made the book make sense and anyone reading this after the changes on 14th Nov 2012 should be ok. ######
This was a horrible collection. The ideas were good (nothing all that original though), but the way they were put together wasn't so good. I stopped reading after story 3. I was so distracted by the numerous mistakes throughout this collection; I kept hoping the next "book 1" of a new series would have improved since the previous one. Unfortunately, they did not! Did the author write all these around the same time? I'd believe it because there are so many mistakes and inconsistencies throughout that I was left baffled. It's like the author hasn't learned or grown while writing different stories. I mean, where was the editor? There's no way in hell these were edited, maybe a friend of the author read over them, but there's no way they were edited by a professional.
I'm not sure why the 5 books in the collection I received from Amazon are different from what's listed here (on Goodreads) but... the following is the list of books I read or attempted to read.
Story 1-Rebellious (New, Dark World series) Story 2-The Zombie Chronicles Story 3-Eternal Vows (STOPPED AFTER THIS ONE) Story 4-Crush Story 5-Blair (Daughter of Darkness series)
I've only listed a few errors (surprise!) for each story below, the rest you can find if you search for the specific book title on Goodreads. There were A LOT! Did I say a lot? I meant tons of mistakes! -------------------------------------------- Story 1- Rebellious 2/5
There were SO MANY issues with this story, whether they involved grammar, inconsistencies, or the timeline.
The ending left much to be desired considering the majorly huge cliffhanger the author left for the reader. Instead of a typical cliffhanger where there's still a couple of questions left which play into the next book, this one didn't answer ANY of the questions. What's with the president? Why is no one allowed to freely talk without disappearing? Why can't the surface people talk/visit the "below deck" people? Who's the stalker? Who's the killer?
Questions/Comments for Rebellious:
At the very beginning, there's a little synopsis before chapter 1. For whatever reason, the whole synopsis is repeated at the beginning of chapter 1. Why?
I'm not a fan of the time jumps. I'm reading the story, the next chapter is a month later, then the next chapter is "months later." BUT there was a huge timeline issue that I realized was going on. Chapter 6 is the sparring scene between Sky and Carla. Chapter 7 starts with "A month passed" and Chapter 8 starts with "Months passed," while Chapter 9 seems to go back to the sparring scene as though it JUST happened, not months prior. Were Chapter 7 and 8 added in after the author thought the story was finished? Either way, where was the editor???
Why did only Sky's grandfather believe the asteroid was going to hit the Earth?
How would a glass underwater structure not get destroyed from the impact of an asteroid (the energy it creates)?
2015-asteroid hits 2035-Sky is sixteen and people are living on the surface. Less than twenty years. Wouldn't it have taken much longer for things to even get a little bit back to normal, especially since people have been on the surface for a while now?
Why does everyone still believe the president?
Why would they not have guards at the chutes that take people to the surface when there are so many secrets about the surface?
Why do those below rely on the surface people for air, food, and supplies? What supplies would they be getting from them? How do they rely on food when the author repeatedly mentions that Sky makes food for all of them?
Would diamonds still be considered expensive and rare? I mean, who would really care about precious stones given they're living in a post-apocalyptic world? ------------------------------------------------- Story 2-The Zombie Chronicles 1/5
I couldn't finish this story, again, there were way too many issues that made me want to stop. Again, if you want the full review for this story, search for this specific story.
Questions/Comments for The Zombie Chronicles:
Again, there's a timeline issue with this story. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Given it's only been a single year since the zombie apocalypse, how in the world would everything basically be back to normal in the "walled-in cities protected by towering concrete walls?" How in the world would those walls have been created so fast?
Given 'A' blood type is the most common and it was those with A and O who was struck with zombism, there couldn't be very many people left. So how have those still alive accomplished as much as they have already? Such as having electricity and water.
What is Dean's title?
Again, similar to the story 1, there's a lack of security in this story.
A zombie cure that can only be given once the person becomes a zombie?
How big was the copter to where Dean had no real issues going inside (climbing through all this supposed firey debris) to get Val out?
What happened to Sherrie?
"It's going to take us three times as long to get back..." Ah...they're walking, not flying, so it would take longer than that!
Dean convincing Lucas that Val's their sister because she has blue eyes/brown hair "in those exact shades." How did Val know where she belonged?
Nick was all about following the protocol and being safe in Zombie land, yet he doesn't check the two girls that show up for bites.
They find a mansion on the main road? And leave Val and girls in a glass house before checking for anyone inside?
"I didn't know them all that well yet, so I naturally didn't feel like I could trust them with my sister's safety." Even though he left her unconscious with them.
Playing the piano, when zombies were just around, during a zombie apocalypse. Sure. Makes sense to me.
--------------------------------------------------- Story 3-Eternal Vows 2/5
The beginning was boring, plain and simple. I wasn't sure if I'd continue, but I did.
I found it strange that the camera Sarah uses is digital, yet she refers to it as holding her film. There's no film in a digital camera. Plus, why does she take only a single picture of "Bigfoot?"
Sarah's hiding. The king is twenty feet away, yet when she's going to see who's there, the first thing she notices is his boots. Why? How?
Why was the king so adamant that Sarah was lying about not being the princess?
HOW IN THE WORLD DID SHE ESCAPE? Mia supposedly has the same hair color/length as Sarah. They have different colored eyes though. Did they look like twins? There was no mention of that. I mean the king looks passed Sarah in Mia's garb, her face is all exposed, yet he doesn't recognize her? When Sarah comments about the eye color, I found it hilariously that Mia said she'd just keep her eyes closed. I didn't get the dye part. How does dye look like blood?
If Liz had been with the priest for a year sometime within the last few years, having been gone ten years so far, where was she before? "...Thanks for taking care of my sister when she had nobody else to look after her." And they seriously believed she would willingly go with them when she's married and happy?
Am I assuming the author was going for a "haha" with all the future references Sarah and Frank would say confusing those in the past? Yeah, not a fan.
Sarah is almost caught while dressed like a priest because she forgot to remove her pearl earrings. Right. Picture this: she's in a dark cloak and her head is down. How did they see her earrings?
Why did Mia and Jules get involved when they could have been killed?
If Princess Gloria was supposedly an Immortal, how did she become one if she wasn't married?
Why didn't Victor communicate more with Sarah telepathically?
One second Frank is standing behind Sarah whispering into her ear, the next second, he's a good distance away sitting on a stool. One second the executioner is calling for people to grab Sarah after she blows out the pyre flame. The next second, the executioner is actually the one to grab her as though he were standing right next to her.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Creative storylines (except zombies, which has been done a thousand times before) but the writing really got to me. Overuse of the words "freaking," "slugged," and quite a few more, over-detailing of every mans appearance (I know its written for girls but come on), and an upsetting amount of typos considering every book is dedicated to her editor. I can't imagine anyone over the age of 15 enjoying these all that much.
Didn't bother to finish it.. REad the first story.. Ok if they like end the book with a cliff hanger. But it wasn't even that. It was like end of installment one.. Like when you buy parts of the book as the author writes it.. Not acceptable for me.. So.. Not even bothering to finish after that "installment" of a story...
I’ve reviewed each story separately but a bit about the box set first.
My Biggest bug bear is that there is no table of contents. There are five books in this boxset and no way of telling how far through each book you are just an overall total. Really frustrating when deciding whether to finish reading or read another chapter to get it finished.
There are some formatting issues with all of the books, I’m guessing this is due to them being bundled together. It’s not a major thing but did mean a few times I had to go back over several pages as I was convinced I had missed something.
Book One - Zombie Chronicles 3 stars
This is a difficult one to review. I love zombie books, in fact I love pretty much anything zombie related so I was pleased the first book in this series was zombie related. I should have loved it, I didn’t.
Not that I hated it, more that it was like the difference between watching a great zombie movie (think Dawn of the Dead) and a bad zombie movie (you know one of the ones you’d watch to the end because there is nothing really wrong with it, you just wouldn’t recommend it to your friends.)
At least half of the chapters started with a recap of the end of the previous chapter, almost as if it was written to be a tv serial (maybe it was released as a serial novel first, if so that would make sense) but it meant there was a lot of repetition which distracted from some of the good story points. I enjoyed the glass house parts, the issue with the jeep and I really enjoyed the way that Val is portrayed. What I didn’t like was how easily Tahoe duped Nick & Lucas - two guys who are supposedly harden army zombie slayers, there is no way in hell they would let him take watch by himself.
I also got really annoyed with the ‘disappearing vials’ they are mentioned only when asked about. Nothing is said about how Dean is having to carry them around, yet at times it is made to sound like he never lets them out of his site but never referenced when he is fighting zombies. There were similar inconsistencies with Val, they pick her up and there is no mention of putting her down. Then they appear to just leave her on the side of the road whilst they do things when it isn’t known at that time she is safe from zombies. So long story short - it’s interesting premise with some great points but some other points that distracted me. That said I will put the sequel in my possible buy list because I do care about the characters and want to know what happens with Val.
Book Two Eternal Vows 3 stars
Again an interesting concept but something about this one didn’t hook me. I’m not sure why not, it felt kind of frantic at times and then boring at others. There was a lot of repeating of the same information in different ways but no explanation for other parts.
As I found it annoying that something would happen then suddenly you’d be somewhere else after some time had passed. This wasn’t helped by the formatting of the box set which meant there was no indication of a break in the narrative. It’s set up to open into a much larger world but based on what I’ve read I don’t imagine some parts to ever be explained.
I have no interest in reading this series further myself but there is enough intrigue there I am sure many people will.
Book three Crush 2 stars
This book is a major change in writing due to the age of the characters. Rather than being adults they are teenagers and so far ( approx 7 chapters) in two rather annoying girls. They must be pretty dumb to not to notice the stupid comments that make it clear things aren’t ‘normal’ in this town.
This story on one hand seemed to mock Twilight and then on the other hand emulate it. With so much time talking about how hot Jesse was, how perfect he was both physically and in his personality. It got rather repetitive.
Book 4 Enchanted Castle 2 stars
This was clearly part of a rapid fire episode series, it feels like the first few chapters of a book. Enough to get you interested but nothing more.
It’s not a series I will continue with as too much of this episode was full up with how hot/cute the characters were. I would have preferred more story and less telling me about how characters looked.
Book 5 - Castaway 3 stars
Another serial released, I would guess, as short novellas. An interesting premise of being stranded somewhere that might not be our world.
The obvious but not really talked about love triangle was faintly annoying to me but I’m sure others would love it.
There is a possibility I might continue with this story depending on the ext instalment.
Surviving Reality by Chrissy Peebles is a five-book, first-in-series anthology. We also get two bonus novellas. My favorite is Hope Survival, the first bonus novella. These are all fun guilty pleasure reads in the YA category. A fun, angsty, mysterious, and very easy to read.
Hope Survival - an interesting novella where an asteroid hit the earth causing an extinction-level effect, like with the dinosaurs. There is a group of humans living under the ocean to survive. I definitely wanted to read more!
The Zombie Chronicles - a solid story following a typical zombie-style narrative. It's intriguing, but not sure if I will pick up the sequel.
Eternal Vows - a portal fantasy with a scientist searching for proof of Saskwatch and finding that she has gone through a portal back to medieval times. This is a case of mistaken identity and she ends up being forced to marry the King who turns out to be immortal and has magical powers. By the end of the book, I was ready to jump into the sequel just to see what would happen next.
Crush - Vampires and Werewolves. It's a decent story with interesting enough characters, I felt like we were just getting into the plot when the book ended. I wish it had been longer as I had a lot of questions that I wanted answered. I will be picking up the sequel as I am very intrigued.
Enchanted Castle - Seniors in high school chosen to study at a castle in Scotland when a group of them get stuck in an attic-like space where items from history are stored. It is a paranormal fantasy with historical aspects, and I want to know more.
Agartha’s Castaway - 3 best friends are out on a boat trip in Fiji with Casey’s parents when they hit a storm that sinks their boat and everyone ends up in the ocean. The three teenagers find themselves in a portal world / other dimension where things are mainly the same with some interesting differences. They find themselves possibly thousands of miles from where they were and need to learn how to survive in this new world.
The first story is good, but it only seemed like a chapter in a book. Not a complete story. It was more of a snippet or sneak peek at the story. Already kind of disappointed. Hopefully the other stories in this book are not like this."
The Zombie Chronicles: It was an okay start to a series. There were some chronological mistakes in the story for me. I don't think that I will be reading any more books from this series. I just couldn't get into the characters or the story that well."
Eternal Vows: I really wanted to like this story. For the most part I did, but as the story went on some of it got a little ridiculous. The story says that all the royals are Immortal, yet the eldest royal is dying? Hmmm, I could be wrong, but I thought that the definition of Immortal was that you couldn't die???"
Crush: My favorite story from this book so far. I'm a sucker (pun intended) for Vampires and YA romances. I would like to continue with this series in the future."
Enchanted Castle: was a short blurb. It could be a good book, but this excerpt was just a chapter. Which didn't get me interested enough in the story to continue with it."
Castaway: It was okay. This book and subsequent parts are novellets. Which are not really my favorite to read. I like longer more in depth books. This book had some elements that remind me of the show "Lost." As a whole though I thought it was just meh."
Crush (The Crush Saga, #1) - 2 stars When Taylor sparks moves with her family to California her meeting with the locals doesn't go as expected. Her new crush Jesse is hiding something from her.
Really? One stupid mistake after another for the characters. tThe characters don't have much of an attention span, they jump from one thing to another. Taylor just acts dumb and has no common sense whatsoever. The characters were flat, there was no substance to them at all. I thought the writing was sloppy and the story did not have as much action as I thought it would.
I had already read and enjoyed The Zombie Chronicles but when I saw that I could get this book free at Amazon I saw it as an opportunity to read the first books in some of her other series. I enjoyed reading Eternal Vows. It definitely left me wanting to complete the series. This on its own would have gotten 5 stars from me. I just could not finish any of the other 3 books that were included in this set.
I loved 4 of the 5 stories, I'm not a zombie fan and had a really hard time reading the first story from Zombie Chronicles, but LOVED the rest of the stories. Fantastic writing, can't wait to read more!
I only read the first book of the five. By itself I would give it a 3. It was ok, you know what I mean? Just o.k. I am not going to read the other four books. Although I would have given the first book a three, it was not that interesting of a work. Most of all just not, I think, my genre.
Zombies,Vampires,Time Travel And A Mysterious Island
This is a mixed bag of fantasy novels. They include a zombIe apocalypse, time travel to the past, vampires and an island that's both fantastical and mysterious. Each book is also the beginning of a series as well.
Well of all the stories, I really liked the one with zombies at Myrtle Beach, SC. I live 75 miles from there. The rest was ok. Read for yourself, too see if you like them .
