'The Mystery Of The Portuguese Hearts' is a destination thriller narrating a tale of love and mystery interwoven within the beautiful places of Portugal. This book intrigued me from the beginning with it's connection to historical events and a love story entwined within. The plot was on point, with immaculate description of the surroundings, I felt as if I was present there, closely watching the entire episode. The characters could have been more developed. Throughout the book I was finding it hard to emotionally connect with the characters. But on the other hand this book is entirely plot-driven.

Coming to the writing, a well written narrative that maintains a steady flow of plots is what I expect from a thriller book, and this book did pretty well on that note. It kept me hooked throughout the end. Both the writing quality and style is exceptional, yet it has been kept simple, so anyone can enjoy it. To summarise it all, it has a strong plot, and good narrative but wobbly character development. I would recommend this to destination thriller lovers.

In ‘The Mystery of the Portuguese Hearts – A Psychological Suspense’, Manjiri Prabhu has created a gripping tale of wine country, betrayal, love, and the shadow of ancestral past. Against the magnificent backdrop of the vineyards of Penafiel and the sunny olive groves of Freixo Espada à Cinta, this novel is a maze of more twists and turns where, with every turn, there is another revelation about the dark secrets of the Monteiro family.

The action begins with suspense – the evil attack on Ricardo Monteiro, an elderly head of the Monteiro family, proprietor of a vast estate. His last enigmatic words suddenly forced his granddaughter, Filipa, into a complicated search for the truth. Ana, an almost elfin character whose true identity remains uncertain, acts as a fulcrum of the story. It is not only the story of how Filipe finds her grandfather’s murderers but also of how she searches for the truth in her family’s dark past when passion and violence go hand in hand.

The appearance of Re Parkar, a daring reporter, as one of the characters complicates the plot even more. His relation with Filipa seems tense, the character conflicts with each other and carries their own agendas and hidden agendas. This is a character well developed with a measure of scepticism and resolve and Filipino could not have a better foil than this where she is emotionally exploited. Together they pursue the dreamlike track of Ana’s love handkerchiefs – lenços now charged with meaning, leading the characters further into the source of the putrefaction rampant within the Monteiro household.

The author excels in creating an atmosphere of palpable dread. The vineyards, usually associated with life and abundance, become shadowy landscapes where danger lurks at every turn. The author’s vivid descriptions transform the idyllic countryside into a treacherous terrain, mirroring the psychological torment of the characters. The suspense is expertly maintained, with each chapter escalating the stakes as Filipa and Re unearth one chilling secret after another.

The book's pacing is relentless, yet the narrative never sacrifices depth for speed. The characters are fully realized, with their flaws and vulnerabilities adding a rich dimension to the story. Filipa’s evolution from a sheltered heiress to a determined seeker of truth is particularly compelling, as her journey is as much about self-discovery as it is about solving the mystery.

In conclusion, it is an example of a psychological suspense at its best. It has created a plot that is as deeply processed as it is heartwarming. Prabhu’s storytelling effortlessly blends history, culture, and suspense, making this book not just a thriller but also a rich exploration of Portugal's heritage. Her vivid descriptions immerse readers in the sun-drenched hills, charming villages, and breathtaking coastlines, painting a picture of Portugal that is both vibrant and captivating. Do I want to visit Portugal after this? Yes, I do.

The characters were well penned. I love Re and wanted to know his story. I was so intrigued by his backstory that I had thoughts about diving into his book next. Filipa sounded like a practical but emotional woman. Her bond with her grandfather and her mentor was truly beautiful. The story unfolded so smoothly. I didn't wish to put the book down at any point in the story. This was my first book by Manjiri and it's was a good read.

I have never read a destination thriller before which was also a first. The language was super easy to follow. The poetry embedded with the clues added a charm. I loved the concept of lencos. The historical elements of the story was so intriguing that I googled each one of them to get to know more facts. As the mystery deepens, Prabhu expertly ties together seemingly unrelated threads, crafting a narrative that is as intricate as it is engaging. The story’s fast pace, surprising twists, and well-drawn characters make it a must-read for fans of destination thrillers. Prabhu’s deep affection for Portugal is evident throughout, adding a layer of authenticity and passion that elevates the novel. The Mystery of the Portuguese Hearts is an unforgettable, must-read adventure.

I particularly want to highlight that some chapters have lyrical wordings like above and I am a sucker for poetry and I adored it.

Have you ever wondered what makes love a superpower for a person to stand still even if many storms come by? One person or that special someone who might not be present physically but love enfolded with connection makes it a support system that grows stronger as you keep hoping for them. This book covers such a love represented by Ana for Ricardo, the two core characters' love story cut off due to age-old dogma tradition of family and commitment as Ricardo was married when they met.

This book brought in so many layers at the onset of the first few chapters that I was blown away immediately. Here I was expecting another thriller with a possible mystic connection, but the dimension brought into the landscapes of Portugal blew me away. I felt like I was exploring Portugal on a love trail with a bit of thriller elements mixed in. This made it a truly refreshing reading experience.

I liked Re immediately, he felt like a true old soul like me. Filipa with her layers made her an interesting character study, but Ana & Re stole the show.

Re was behind the scenes studying characters and their emotions, which is what I love to do, as some of you know *wink*. And there were a lot of loose ends in the plot which made time for a bit of an introspection too. Family and Peace were beautiful interlinked jewels adding even more layers to this book.

I think the book stood out to me for its human elements, which was one of its primary focuses, so I loved reading the book period.

Manjiri Prabhu’s “The mystery of the Portuguese Hearts” is a captivating thriller based on mystery and travel. Set in the picturesque locale of Portugal’s wine country.
The novel follows the entry of Re Parker, an investigative journalist in the fray to find out the reason behind the death of Filipa’s Grandfather where Filipa and Re delve into a case filled with love, hatred, legacy, separation, hope and the game of life and death.
The plot is intricately designed, with enough twists to keep readers guessing until the very end.
Author has used some meaningful lines which put me in a deep thought like “Luck can bring you the legacy, but it is hardwork that will help you elevate it. “
Also, She highlights the point of following your heart always, in the end nothing else matters.
I came across a line that can create a profound thought, whether love is actually a blessing or a curse.
The English language level is intermediate. People can learn new vocabulary words too. Overall, it was a great read.

This story starts with Filipa, pur female lead getting a cryptic message from her grandfather as his last wish, willing get to solve the mystery and find the truth. With the help of investigative journalist, Re Parkar, will she be able to reach the truth or is it too late for them?

This book had a lot of potential. The storyline in the 1st half of the book was propelling and it was quite literally, un-putdown-able. But, by the time we reach the 2nd half of the book, it had slowed down a lot and I found it a little hard to concentrate on the storyline.

The thing I didn't like about the book was, it was trying to do a lot of things at once and there was too much going on that I feel, took us away from the main storyline. This book had a lot of details of the different Portugal landmarks, which gave it a great charm but at time, they just seemed to be a little too stretched then required. Also, there were certain plot details that were never explained and it made the story feel kinda incomplete.

It was a well written novel, for sure!! The cover has my whole heart. If you are looking for a medium-paced mystery book, you might enjoy it :)

Besides a picturesque description of Portugal, it didn't offer much. I could predict the culprit and the motive quite early on, thus spoiling the entire plot. Also, the entire theme seemed familiar with The Vinci Code..that again was a let down.
