In a time of political unrest and war looming on the horizon, there’s a surge in trauma, pain, and suffering across the country of Sweazn. Eira Karlson and her friends are weighed down on the front lines, working endlessly in therapeutic and investigative roles. They’re all nearly pushed to their limits and some of them, such as Athena Lilar and Tryg Thompson, are the very reason Eira’s staying afloat.
Sweazn is not the only place facing a difficult age. In a world separated from Earth by a thin veil of time and space, a surging plague of darkness is spreading at an alarming pace. Prince Nyx would know better than most about the consequences of catching the all-consuming agony and banishment outside the capital of Rioa.
Through a series of twists and turns and recurring dreams of lost memories, Eira finds herself thrown into the magical realm of souls, Majikaero. New souls, both friends and foe, merge with some of her closest friends as they travel into the unknown. And some of these new friends turn her world upside down– especially Prince Nyx with his heated, crackling eyes and smoky shadows.
She’s told she’s been to Majikaero before and her soul shined bright with healing powers. Yet when she’s faced with the mystery of her origin, coupled with damaged friends and a plague of darkness threatening to destroy the realm, can she find the strength and magic to protect herself and her friends?
Eira must face her greatest inner battles to survive and find the one thing that can save the light within.
I wanted to take my time with this review and try to find the right words to describe my experience reading The Light Within by Carlian Jean. I really feel like this was more than reading a beautiful ARC; it was an authentic experience, one that will stay with me for a long, long time. The Light Within is being released on August 1st!
The Light Within offers such a unique approach to fantasy, leaving me wanting the sequel as soon as I read the final sentence. I just knew the moment I read the blurb that this would be a book close to my heart and unique in so many ways. It weaves the delicate strings of plot and characters with such finesse that it's impossible not to be drawn in. The world-building is deep and intricate, challenging you to think and question everything and inviting you to work alongside the characters in untangling the mysteries of their actions and feelings. But above it all, it tackles some really serious topics concerning mental health, healing and self-healing in the most profound and beautiful way, making it the most unique fantasy book I have come across so far.
Eira, the FMC, is a therapist, and that part of her genuinely shows and shines in all aspects of her personality, together with her dearest friends. She herself has her share of internal trauma, and we are shown a daily battle with all its ups & downs. Eira is plagued with the most vivid nightmares that turn out to be so much more than nightmares once she finds herself on a plane she never knew existed, in the world of souls called Majikaero. She is told she has been a part of the realm before, and her soul shined bright there with immense healing powers. Her soul is drawn to Nyx, a banished soul and a prince of darkness, just as Nyx's is drawn to hers and has been for many lifetimes, as they are almaoves, true soulmates.
How will they both navigate the pull of bonded souls, their inner traumas and demons? And how will Eira, together with Nyx, try to free the souls of Majikaero, who are stricken by a sort of dark plague?
I loved navigating the realm of Majikaero with Eira while learning more about her and her past, her deep relationship with Nyx, and the unique bonds she formed along the way. These bonds, both new and old, add a layer of depth to the story that is truly captivating. If you enjoy profound stories and plot lines, masterfully crafted characters, and fantasy blended with mental health representation, this is the book for you!
The Light Within will offer you 🤍 deep & intricate world-building 🤍 a realm of souls 🤍 mental health rep 🤍 (self)healing 🤍 inner and outer battles 🤍 multiple POVs 🤍 unique bonds 🤍 found family 🤍 slow-burn and the most unique fantasy story that dives deep into mental health.
The Light Within immerses you into a fantastical world where war is looming, a mysterious dark plague is spreading and beautifully weaving mental health with physical to give you a reading experience like no other.
Eira (FMC) is a therapist who is going through it mentally and physically. Eira keeps having wildly vivid dreams, sometimes waking with marks on her that match her dreams. She and her friends are on the frontlines where there's a surge of trauma, pain, and suffering in Sweazn - a world separated by Earth by a thin veil of time and space. A plague of darkness is spreading at an alarming pace. A plague that causes all-consuming agony and results in banishment outside of the capital, Rioa - as Prince Nyx had to displeasure of experiencing.
Twists and turns, things happen and Eira finds herself in the magical magical realm of souls - Majikaero. There she meets new souls, some of which are friends, others are enemies. They merge with some of Eira's closest friends as they travel into the unknown. Some of these new friends turn her world upside down, especially Prince Nyx (hello shadows).
Eira is informed that she's previously been to Majikaero and her soul shined bright with healing powers. Yet when she's faced with the mystery of her origin, coupled with damaged friends and a plague of darkness threatening to destroy the realm, can she find the strength and magic to protect herself and her friends?
Eira must face her greatest inner battles to survive and find the one thing that can save the light within.
The plot is intriguing, I enjoyed the uniqueness of it and how mental health played in/effected the characters so much. The mysteries in the plot go beyond the physical and encompass mental as well - and I just love that! The way mental and physical is weaved into this fantasy is divine. And oh boy, that ending!
The prose is beautiful, almost poetic at times. It flows well and is easy to follow. The dialogue is great. It feels natural.
I was hooked by the first sentence in the prologue. "It's a whisper of a chilled touch, puckering edges of skin before slinking down through the system, straight to the gut."
I can't say enough about the characters, they're just so good. Well developed, nuanced, and dimensional. The author does an amazing job making you care so much about them and what happens to them.
The world building is great. It's fully immersive, engaging all of your senses.
The mental health rep is top tier. The author is a therapist, and it shows (in a great way). If you're looking for a fantasy book that really goes deep on mental health - this is for you.
It has 2 maps and a list of pronunciations that I love, but I could see it concerning some. Try not to let it dissuade you. Getting the pronunciations just right while you're reading to yourself isn't super important, in my opinion.
It does have content that could be potentially triggering to some, so please check the author's list on her site.
Thank you to @carliannjean and @trulyyours.pr for the eARC! This is my unbiased review.
eARC: This book was quite different from what I expected but still executed fairly well. The story line gives the vibes of City of Bones series with the different realms. It was a little difficult to get into as there is a ton of background info that is essential to get into the story. The author does detail all of it before hand, but definitely something I had to keep referring back to throughout the book.
It does center around mental health themes which was a refreshing take on a new book. I can tell that there was a lot of passion and understanding that went into this story which elevated the reading experience entirely.
Tropes: found family multi-realms dystopian fantasy soulmates magic shadow daddy mental health rep he falls first shifters Multi POV
The Light Within is a dystopian modernish fantasy. I know, that sounds... confusing? No, I swear it's not. The story is set in the future after Earth has been destroyed, as we know it. Generations later, people have moved from underground and resurfaced to start over. Our FMC Eira is a therapist on Earth and she's got a tight knit group of friends who are her found family. Eira keeps having what she believes are nightmares and after a conversation with her yoga instructor, who believes in alternative medicine, she's convinced Eira's nightmares are memories of past lives she's lived.
In a parallel realm, called Majikaero, MMC Nyx and his friends have been affected by a plaque sweeping the land. There's magic here in this realm, pulling it from everything that surrounds you, such as elements. Here, people are called solliqa... which means souls. Your soul passes from realm to realm over and over.
Eira eventually finds her soul leaves Earth and lands in Majikaero. She's been told the solliqas have been waititng for her to return. Not yet remembering her past soul life, Eira is suddenly having to come to terms with leaving her friends behind on earth, being told Nyx is her soul's mate, curing the land of the plague, her own mental health/trauma, and that she is the Queen of Light. It's a lot to take in!
I enjoyed this story and that cliffhanger has me asking sooo many questions! I will definitely be reading book 2 because I need answers. There's a misguided love triangle, betrayal, friendships, trauma, and I won't spoil anything but.... there's one character I'm very suspicious of and I need to know how that situation turns out! The idea of the soul never expiring but moving from one realm to another in a cycle of "life" is very intriguing to me. I love this idea. Are we all fated? How many lifetimes does it take to remember or find your soul family/mate? Lots to think on, which is fun!
I am writing this review as an ARC reader and will share an honest review. I’m super grateful to Carliann Jean for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC reader for her book as I can tell that she really put her heart and soul into this book.
First thing….. Wow what a cliffhanger ! I can’t wait for the next book in the series because WHAT?! The book definitely has a satisfying conclusion while also leaving you on a cliffhanger which I want to appreciate because it’s hard to do both!
As a therapist I LOVE works of fiction that include mental health themes and representation and this book did that so well. I appreciate that these themes were not secondary - they were a part of the main plot and I feel like that’s so much more real and relatable than having them be secondary or tertiary.
The world building is expansive and I definitely found it beneficial to check out the supplemental information at the back of the book so I had that information to work with while reading. The magic system is really interesting and unique and made it super fun to read and keep learning about throughout the book.
I related to so much of what Eira walked through…. her thoughts, and struggles and it was really satisfying to see my own journey as a therapist reflected back to me. I didn’t realize how much I wanted and needed to see my therapist self on the pages…. But I didn’t realize.
The character development was thorough , even for minor characters ( tbh no characters felt minor) and I was excited to see each character arc throughout the book and eventually series!
This book is fun, relatable, exciting , touching and educational and I definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone. There is something for everyone in this book and I know you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the unique way your heart and soul are touched by this work.
I was pleasantly intrigued by the complexity of the world building, even with all provided pronunciation guides, indexes, and maps; in which there's plenty!
Eira is a hardworking and dedicated therapist on a future Earth ravished by wars. With the support of friends in related work fields, she helps heal those facing many levels of trauma. Until she's swept away to the magical world of Majikaero, where Eira forms bonds with the many new friends she meets. This is also where she meets Nyx, the banished Prince of Darkness who's been infected by a magical plague, which causes a shadow beast to also take up residents within him.
The romance between Eira and Nyx is a fiery slow burn, and the instant connection between them had me so giddy! And his nickname for her, little firefly, is too cute !! I love her strong sense of right and wrong, how she puts the big, bad shadow prince in his place.
this book focuses heavily on mental health and trauma, which isnt not a subject many authors ive found dive deep into. But the writing was amazing, and she explained complex things in a way to understand.
I was very impressed with this debut novel, and I look forward to the next installment in the Soul Bound Realm !! -
Tropes ♡ undiscovered powers ♡ touch her and 💀 ♡ fated love / past lives ♡ magical realm ♡ shifters / monsters ♡ found family ♡ hidden powers ♡ trauma / mental health rep ♡ he falls first
-‘๑’- I enjoyed this fantasy book! Like all fantasy books, it took me awhile to actually fully understand & get into it. I had so much fun imagining the world & how it looked through the descriptions the author gave. there were also super helpful in the beginning of the book with placements & how to pronounce all the new cities!!! Not many fantasy books do that so the fact that they took their time with that truly is something cool! This book is truly unique & it keeps you hooked & wanting more.
-‘๑’- This book has multiple povs, so you do get certain scene twice so you can see what that character is thinking throughout that particular scene! I truly enjoyed having all these povs since I feel like I got to know the characters a lot better.
-‘๑’- In the book, we get the pov of 4 main characters & what each of their jobs/roles are! Eira is a therapist trauma healer, Del is like a magical creature, Tryg works at an office at the capital/has a government job, & Nyx is a captive who has a ‘secret’.
-‘๑’- Throughout the book we experience & witness blanks struggles with certain memories & nightmares, we get to see how it affects her life, work & even social interaction. We also get some romance which is always nice to have.
Wow this book was magical. So much world building and exploration into the magic system. You can definitely tell this was written by a therapist (that’s not meant to sound disparaging) there’s a lot of emotional intellect in these characters and it’s so nice to see. I like all the side characters and I thought they were charming and interesting. I liked the romance even though I’m not usually a huge fan of “insta-love”. This one felt deeper to me because of the “past lives” they had together. Even though they don’t know each other in this life there is some cosmic force that pushes Eira and Nyx together (I mean how romantic is that?)
If you’re looking for a completely unique story full of deep lore, intense mental health & chronic pain rep, and a legendary found family then, I promise you, this is your story. TLW is immersive in its prose and world building, bringing literal color and magic to your imagination while wrapping you up in a tragically beautiful atmosphere of light, darkness and every shade in between.
We get to follow multi POVs in this intricate story, mainly and namely following the FMC, Eira, a trauma therapist who suddenly begins having very realistic nightmares. But when those nightmares become reality- or another world altogether- she realizes that this isn’t her first time in this world called Majikaero. No, she has spent many lifetimes between here and earth.
Having left a warring post apocalyptic earth and her found family, Eira finds herself in a world wrought with colors, creatures, magic (or maji), souls, and a new set of friendships. She reunites with new, old, and renewed soul bonds. Unearths powers, darkness, healing, and a star crossed heart bond that has spanned lifetimes. But she remembers little of her past life and the woman she use to be. It’s here she begins to find that while also helping her traumatized shadow daddy and dysfunctional chosen family do the same.
TLW is dark in its representation of trauma and mental health, but equally balanced and navigated with gentleness, grace, and unconditional love and support. The romance is just heating up and I CANT WAIT for what’s to come. Especially because there are so many soul ties and questions we’ve yet to have answered. Not to mention that ending!!! Carli, like WHAT?!!!
Tropes you may find in TLW that aren’t listed above are mult first person POVs, broody and broken shadow daddy, fated souls, medium-low spice, romantic and platonic soul bonds, lots of wonderful banter, unique elemental ans shifter magic, he braids her hair, touch her and ☠️, he makes cute shadow pets for her, and nicknames.
TLW is available now. You won’t want to miss this series!!
I was provided an ARC of this title for free and am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Light Within is the first title of Carliann Jean’s The Soulbound Realms series, and follows Eira, who is physically experiencing what happens in her dreams in waking. The more realistic they become, the less she is grounded to the physical world.
Eventually, she finds herself in a magical realm and discovers that she was once its queen…until something destroyed her. Because the plague that now ravages her waking world started soon after her destruction, the question quickly arises— could she be the key to its cure?

This is a captivating blend of fantasy, romance, and psychological depth. Set in the war-torn land of Sweazn, the story follows Eira, a compassionate therapist grappling with her own trauma while aiding others on the front lines. Her journey takes a mystical turn as she is drawn into Majikaero, a realm of souls plagued by darkness. There, she encounters Prince Nyx, an enigmatic figure who challenges her perceptions and ignites a profound connection.
This story blends fantasy, mental health, and slow-burn romance in a way that feels both magical and deeply human. Eira’s journey is emotional, raw, and beautifully written, with themes of grief, resilience, and the fight to hold on to your light. The romance between Eira and Nyx is both tender and intense, providing a compelling emotional core to the story and it happens naturally so it feels real and authentic!
If you’re into fantasy with emotional depth, soul realms, and characters who break and rebuild, this is your next read.
⚡️Thank you Love Book Tours and Carliann Jean for sharing this book with me!
This one took me a little bit longer than expected to get into but once I did I was hooked! The magic system was so different from everything else I’ve been reading which was nice, but it definitely took some time to get used to just because of how detailed and intricate it was. Overall I loved this one and can’t wait to read the next one! Please do yourself a favor and pick this one up, you won’t be disappointed!

I want to take a moment and thank the author for letting me Arc read this, its been an honor!!!!
Okay, so to start off, the beggining was slow for me =, not alot happening, my attention went elsewhere where, and I had a hard time coming back.
But once we get the the second half of this story it really started to pick up pace , was hard to put down, it was easy to connect to the Characters, and their trauma, do I recommend this book absolutely, 100%.
First of all, this one was a super dark fantasy. Definitely darker than I had thought, so there is a huge impact there. The subjects are dark and a lot of characters are morally grey, so if that's your thing you will love this one, like me.
The magic/fantasy aspect was super unique and I really enjoyed learning about this new world.
I really liked the dystopian vibes and also the career aspect of all the characters.
Also, nothing better than a found family trope!
I found myself super connected to the characters and was rooting for my favorites the whole time & of course hating on the ones that deserve it. 😏
You get: • Multiple POV • Romantasy • Spicy • Dark Topics • Veiled Worlds • Maji • Soul Mates
I highly recommend this one and you should pick it up before book two comes out! Available on KU, ebook, hardcover, and paperback.
What an epic start to the series! I enjoyed this book so much. The story was strong and the themes were dealt with tremendously.
The cover is stunning. The illustrations here and and throughout the book are simply exquisite. Commendation to your illustrator Carliann! The colours pop and it's a very eye-catching cover. Excellent job with the design.
The book is beautifully written and flows nicely. The descriptions are fantastic. The world building is stunning. I always appreciate good world building and Carliann has smashed this! Fantastic work.
The mental health theme is very interesting. I like seeing this advocated. Carliann has dealt with mental health in an extremely sensitive and caring way. Thank you for this.
The characters are wonderful. Eira is fantastic I like her a lot. She's easily my favourite character. The interactions and story development for the characters is brilliant.
I really cannot recommend this book about. I am very excited about reading the next installment!
Did I give my book 5 stars? Hell yeah, I did. 🫶🏻 I’m so proud of my first book baby- now it’s time to push out another- I mean that in the most self-loving and unhinged way.😉
I had The Light Within on my TBR for a little bit and glad I finally took the plunge because I was sucked into this fantasy read right away!

There’s an increase of pain and suffering across Sweazn, coinciding with political unrest and war looming on the horizon. Eira Karlson and her friends are working on the front lines in therapeutic and investigative roles – everyone is worn down and fighting an uphill battle.
Simultaneously, in a world separated by a thin veil of time and space from Earth, Majikaero is experiencing a surge in the plague of darkness; the rate at which it’s spreading is alarming. Prince Nyx knows better than most the consequences of catching the all-consuming agony…
Through a wild series of events and dreams that turn out to be lost memories, Eira finds herself on the other side of the veil, into the magical realm of souls, Majikaero…a place Eira supposedly has been before, where her soul shined bright with healing powers. Now, new souls, both friends and foe, merge with some of her closest friends as they travel into the unknown together. And some of her new friends? Feel familiar and turn Eira’s world on its axis – especially the Prince of Darkness.
Will Eira be able to face her own inner battles to protect herself and her friends while finding the light within?
One thing I didn’t expect but loved: intricate world-building. I basically went in blind, so figured there’d be some sort of unique realm, but the depth that is being built is incredible! The way the details are layered isn’t overwhelming (if you’re nosy AF like me, you’ll be saying “but wait, I want all the details now” 🤣) and you’ll find yourself wanting to explore the realm(s) asap! If you’re wanting to dip your toe into a higher fantasy type read, this is a great starting point because we start in a dystopian earth that you can very easily envision (because it doesn’t sound too far-fetched 😅) and travel to a different realm, and learn of other connections while there. I also loved the unique magic system. The importance of healing one’s soul on the journey to unlocking your magic in full? I’ve never read anything like it and am fully invested in each of our MCs' growth and coming into their own, and finding out the extent of each person’s abilities. There are many flawed MCs — they’re realistic in their journeys because they’ve made mistakes, feel guilt, loss, hopelessness, etc., all things that endear them to your heart. I also am living for the found family and soul bonds. I love love love strong connections between MCs and acknowledging that love comes in different forms and plays a vital role in your life. The friend groups, old and new, that blend together are great and I can’t wait to delve into those relationships further in book 2.
Now as for characters? I found a new shadow daddy or two to love 🤭 Am I rooting for Nyx to heal alongside Eira? You bet your sweet a$$ I am. The Prince of Darkness and Ruin who thinks his soul has no light and is bound to the Queen of Light? SAY. LESS. Try and stop me from not championing this pairing so we can go kick some evil a$$ to Cudhellen and back!
And since I said, shadow daddy or two? Well, Nyx has some friends plagued by the same darkness as he is and there’s a certain big bad wolf 🐺 that has wormed his way into my heart when he probably shouldn’t since he’s a step or two away from being feral, but I can save him, okay? 🤣
And Eira’s girlfriends? The best friends she could have ever asked for and I can’t wait to see everyone reunited at some point!
Oh, and plot twists? If I wasn’t shouty caps in the author’s DMs multiple times while reading 🤣🤣🤣 let’s just say, my trust is fragile 😅 I was bamboozled to the highest degree 🤣 but love when I’m truly left with my mouth gaping open!
And spice?! There is some and it’s delightful because time passes a bit differently in Majikaero so you may think things were going on for an hour, but it could’ve been days. DAYS. Let that sink in. He might be putting work in for DAYS and you’re none the wiser because you’re in a bubble of bliss. You’re welcome.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys being transported to another realm to escape reality so you can go on quests vicariously through the characters!
This book introduces a unique twist to the world of magic and monsters, a refreshing take that leaves me eagerly anticipating the next installment in the series.
Eira is sweet yet fierce when it comes to protecting others and standing her ground for what is right. She gives everyone a chance and acts as a therapist on the frontlines of this new world set years after a nuclear war. With a new war looming in the future, Eira and her friends work to help people heal from the traumas they face. At the same time, she works through her intense nightmares and a growing unease.
One day, she finds herself transported to another realm where darkness spreads like disease, and Eira must do all she can to help protect both realms. Don't let the extensive pronunciation and glossary list in the front of the book intimidate you. While many new concepts are introduced in the novel's worldbuilding, I easily understood and put everything together. This book does a great job presenting the two realms, and I can't wait to see more future worldbuilding to answer the questions I was left with as a reader.
I loved the idea of darkness stemming from trauma, and it was unique in how the author weaved this into the curse plaguing the realm. You can tell the author spent a lot of time focusing and ensuring the characters' healing is represented accurately. The book conveys so many powerful messages, including that love isn't always positive, that healing the mind takes time, and that we are redeemable.
The side characters all had distinct personalities, although, at times, I struggled in the beginning to keep track of who was who just because there were so many. At the same time, as the story progressed and we learned more about each of them, this became easier. It would be cool to see more of a backstory for some side characters as the series continues. Zaya was such a cute addition, and I love Athena and her calming presence. The banter between the characters made me laugh, and their love for one another shows as their found family meshes together to keep Eira safe.
There are a lot of dark themes in this book, so I would consider the trigger warning list before reading to protect your mental health.
I enjoyed this book so much. I was entranced by the worldbuilding and kept reading to see how their family came together. Nyx and Eira's relationship was wonderful in this slow-burn romance, and it felt both realistic and magical. There's so much left to discover at the end of this book, so it'll be fun to see where the characters go next.
This shape shifting romantasy stole my heart after reading the dedication page: "For those who feel trapped by their trauma and the monsters within. For those who've experienced significant pain. For those who question whether their soul can heal. This is for you. You do have the light within." (italics are the author's)
Carliann Jean writes eloquent prose that pulls the reader into the story. The Light Within is a precious story about health, both mental and physical. I was touched by this story's purpose; it became my daily treat of 30 minutes alone time. I wanted to relish every minute, not just devour it in 1-2 sittings.
Jean acknowledges in her afterword that part of herself as a therapist is in this narrative. And, I ascertain that. Eira (FMC) works as a therapist in a war torn area. She speaks about her work and the emotional toll: "It can be demanding, healing others, but I wouldn't trade it for anything. I feel it to the core that this is my life calling, and I'm honored to help those in pain find their peace. It's also not a possibility to cave into my emotions. My heart is deeply nestled inside thick armor that extends outward coating my skin." Eira, like real life therapists, endure their own trauma and need to learn coping and healing techniques.
Eira jumps between two planes: physical Earth and magical Majikaero. In both planes there are two factions vying for control. A plague has been unleashed in the Majikaero plane: "The plague itself started centuries ago but has been uncontainable in recent years. It's the worst kind of disease a soul could catch. It *** affects each solliqa uniquely and is as contagious as the dark itself, born from pain and sorrow and trauma specific to each soul. The disease eats away at the soul until solliqa turns into a monstrous demon, typically a reflection of the pain and trauma it faced."
This plague has transformed the royal prince Nyx into a smoke beast. His soulmate was believed lost in battle. However, Eira (her Earth name) did survive, and she is being hunted. Can Nyx and Eira find their way back to each other? Can they save their friends, their kingdom, and the planes from destruction? Can those who want peace work together, or will their demons lose control? They must learn and remember: "You're only as strong as the friends by your side. Don't make the mistake of believing you're the strongest."
This is one of my favorite reads for 2025! 5/5 Stars.
Thank you Carliann Jean for my free eARC. This review is my honest opinion.
This is another book I went in blind but was surprised to find the FMC was a therapist. I immediately identified with the storyline and couldn't stop reading. The author does a great job in the world building. He world is in turmoil and leads the FMC towards her destiny. She encounters barriers and helps others through their trauma uniquely, weaving the fantasy element throughout the story. Can I just say SHIFTERS and magical places!!! The book leaves you wanting more, and I can't wait. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Eira Karlson and her friends are weighed down on the front lines, working tirelessly in therapeutic and investigative roles. Though all are nearly pushed to their limits, Eira and her friends keep each other afloat with love and laughter. Beyond Sweazn, through a thin veil of time and space, the realm of souls faces its own peril. A plague of darkness spreads rapidly, and Prince Nyx knows too well the agony and exile it brings. Eira’s recurring dreams and lost memories drag her into Majikaero, a magical realm of souls. Here, she encounters new allies and foes, including Nyx, the deviously alluring shadow prince who Eira can’t help but feel irrevocably drawn to. Eira learns she once thrived in Majikaero, her soul radiant with healing power. Now, confronted with the mysteries of her origins, the plight of her damaged friends, and the encroaching darkness, she must summon the strength and magic to protect both realms. Eira must face the trauma of her past and find the one thing that can save those she loves: the light within. The Light Within is book one of a thrilling new adult fantasy romance series that is centered around themes of mental health and healing. You can’t hide a goddess from her own destiny…
“As sure as the air I breathe, I know that she’s the one who can tame my tortured soul. The one who will dig out what’s left of my love and kindness, even if it means she needs to crawl on all fours in my grave, her nails covered in poisoned dirt, as she unburies the forsaken light.”
Breathtakingly refreshing high fantasy with a heavy lean into mental health representation (in the best of ways), magic, the healing that comes with beautiful connections with friends and fated mates, a brooding MMC with a feisty and loveable FMC, and all the ups and downs that would come with the journey. Additional tropes that are masterfully woven into this story include undiscovered powers, past lives, shifters and who doesn’t love a good touch her and d!e.
This story follows Eira, a sassy and spunky mental health provider who suffers from recurring realistic nightmares that plague her at every turn. Majikaero, the realm of souls, is tormented by darkness and shadows (no pun intended). One night, Eira’s nightmares transport her to Majikaero where she encounters people from her past that she didn’t know she had, people who she feels a soul tie to, even a delicious morally grey shadow prince. Soon she discovers the reality that she once dwelled in this realm and healed those who needed it. With her new and old friends by her side, she is ready to take on the new/old enemies that threaten it all. With the threat of the impending war, can she hold on to the light long enough to save those she loves and both realms?
Captivating writing with strikingly exquisite world building. It was easy to get lost in the entrancing world that author Carliann Jean has curated. I couldn’t get enough of this story and all the glorious highs and heart wrenching lows, pain, and cathartic healing for both the characters and the reader. I am very excited to run and snag book 2 so that I won’t have to wait to see how the story continues.
“I think nightmares can find us anywhere. In our homes, in our bodies, in our memories. Back on Earth, in the form of war. Here in Majikaero, as the plague of darkness. In the dreams our souls dare to have.”
“You don’t even know that your light is no longer yours. Or that you had it to begin with.”
The Light Within , a riveting fantasy romance that captures trauma and healing in a whole new way. I was so pleasantly surprised by this story ! I really felt connected to Eira the FMC , she’s a therapist with a seemingly normal life, until her nightmares become real and she’s sucked into a different realm where her soul is a very powerful healer.
This fantasy brought me a new visualization on healing and healing powers, it was so magical to read about ! I was hooked from only a couple chapters in. With multiple POVs to bounce from I was constantly wondering what would happen next! Eira’s in depth look at how she sees everyone and how to help them was so refreshing and just kept me so interested in her character.
The characters are just like family ! Also some hidden betrayals layered in the story, between these two realm’s we have so many important people in Eira’s life and my absolute favourite of them is her best friend Athena. I love the concept of the soul realm , the concept that soul mates don’t have to be your lover but your best friend as well.
And oh the depth in Nyx’s character writing was so interesting, he is our MC and the fact the author brought light to male SA is so valued in my eyes, it’s not talked about enough and I’m so glad we have that representation in this novel.
A few things I would say I couldn’t quite get over while reading , would be the massive world building, it did take a while for me to connect everything and understand the vocabulary. Also I’m not the biggest fan of Insta-Love and this romance had a bit of that as well. I did enjoy the romance portions though, I thought their bond was so sweet and I did blush at more than one scene!
I can’t wait for Carliann Jean to write the next one because i definitely need to know what happens after that insane plot twist and cliffhanger !
This one was a slow burn—and I mean that in more ways than one. The fated mates don’t even meet until halfway through, which definitely had me skeptical for a romantasy lover, but it also gave me time to settle into the world and get to know the main characters well along with the side characters. This book is heavy in world-building and character development, especially before the romantasy kicks in. We’re talking shape-shifters, reincarnated souls, a magical realm that exists alongside a war-torn mortal one, and deep, layered mental health rep.
The FMC, Eira, has a therapy background and struggles with mental health, which I felt was written with care. Her emotional journey is tied to her body’s reaction to her past life and bond with her mate, which added a beautiful complexity to her arc. I really appreciated the theme and focus on trauma and healing—it’s not something you always get in fantasy romance, and it gave the book uniqueness.
I did struggle a bit at the start with the multiple POVs. I would’ve personally preferred to just stick with Nyx (our banished prince and shadow daddy!) and Eira—their perspectives were strong, and I think narrowing it down would’ve helped me connect more quickly to the story. But once things got going—especially past the halfway mark—it really started to pick up. I found myself pulled in and the other POVs ended up playing a major role.
The found family vibes were comforting, the slow burn was real (low spice), the reincarnation theme gave it that extra layer of destiny, that explained the instant connection well for the romance in the story. While the idea of souls being reborn isn’t entirely new to me, the way it was woven into this world was well thought out. I would recommend this for epic fantasy lovers who enjoy a lush world and detailed character building.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Stand out lines/quotes: Nyx- “This is why I wanted to take you here, firefly, to show you the light you bathe me in—why I’ll easily fall to my knees and worship your soul.”
E-"I think... I think I'm choosing you, Nyx. And that means I have to let pieces of Tryg go. My soul innately knows this." N-"Does this mean I'm the cure, then?" E-"I think it means you're the drug that I'll surely become addicted to," she says quietly, staring into my eyes. N-"Perfect, I'm already addicted to your soul and will die if I don't get a taste."
My Thoughts: The First few chapters were a bit slow moving and a little confusing. I felt like we were given a lot of information but not the right information (if that makes any sense) to make it clear what was happening and who exactly the characters were. It almost would have made sense to have a prequel of sorts that would explain Majikaero and the types of characters found in the book. The prologue explained what was happening on earth… kind of, for the most part. The realm & character confusion are explained but not until you’re 33% in, which I guess isn’t terrible but still it sucks that you have to wait that long to fully understand who half of the characters are and what their goal is. Confusion aside, I really enjoyed this book. It is a really, really slow, slow burn lol. This is more fantasy than romance but it’s definitely not a disappointment. Once things click into place in the story the world building gets really good and you get attached to the characters. I really like Nyx and Eira “Firefly” (swooning sigh). The cliffhanger was expected but I am definitely eager to read the next book!
I don't even know where to strt my review because this was a RIDE. I am obsessed and am eagerly waiting for book 2.
Eira, our FMC, is a therapist from a part of Earth called Sweazn. It's a time of political unrest, there is pain, suffering and a terrible amount of trauma. But there is more to it than what meets the eye, not far from earth in a place called Majikaero, where souls go after learning their lesson on earth, there is a dark force stirring in the shadows. So when Eira ends up there she'll have to come face to face with her inner demons, quite literally. She will not be alone though, because Prince Nyx and his friends along with other souls, will be there to help her.
HUMMM HELLO?????? THIS WAS AWESOME. The worldbuilding was *chef kiss*, the character development, the way each character was built and had their own flaws and strengths. I swear I could feel my heart beating out of my chest in some scenes as if I was the one healing my trauma, I don't know what sorcery is this but DAMN IT WAS GOOD.
Eira is a total queen and can't wait to see where this journey takes her. Nyx, my soon to be husband, ohmygod, very very very nice soul, love him. Regarding Tryg, I have very conflictive emotions and it breaks my heart to see the path he is taking. Athena is very cool and I want to be her bestie. Nyx's friends were peculiar in their own way, and even with their demons, I could see light and love in each of them. Now, THE ENDING!?!?!? Emotional damage. I really hope we get to see more of Eira's friends on earth in the next book and that the vision she saw at the end wasn't true because more P A I N.
GRIL I AM TELLING YOU, FROM BOOK BESTIE TO BOOK BESTIE, GO READ THIS. ASAP.
Wow, what a clever and immersive read! The story follows Eira in future Earth and her friends many of them also trauma healers and therapists like Eira. Eira is strung out, burnt out and exhausted…. But is that just her job exhausting her or is there another reason? She is transported into a new realm Majikaero (won’t tell you how or why, no spoilers here!) where she needs to heal her own traumas as well as help others towards the light, all while dark forces and double crossing plagues her transformation.
This book is not only an amazing story with immersive and descriptive writing that lores you in but it also has an incredibly powerful message of healing and fighting the darkness.
Written in multiple POV gives the book a great switch in perspectives but isn’t swapping and changing between loads of different characters it’s hard to keep up. There’s quite a few main characters through the book but I didn’t actually find it that hard to keep up with who’s who (which is something I can often struggle with in Fantasy books), I also found the useful guide at the back of the reigns, main character names and pronunciations and descriptions of what some of the terms used in Majikaero (the magical realm) this along with the map at the front really helped me be able to connect with the story. I would highly recommend reading the quizzes at the back before starting the book.
I have to say, I LOVED this book. It’s a big’un at 478 pages but do NOT let that put you off. This is such a great read with some drama, romance, dark princes, magical realms and some beautiful writing makes for such a powerful read. I am so excited for the next book and following this series, CANNOT wait!
Thank you to LBT and the author for having me in the book tour
There is an extensive list of map descriptions and details in the beginning of the book. It also includes name pronunciations. I found it to be helpful. Though, it could be overwhelming for some. Push through, it's worth it.
The approach to mental health is done with care, compassion, strength and dignity. It was fascinating to read how seriously it is taken.
This book is such a change from other fantasy books I've read. The characters, the multiple POV, and the plot are written so well. It had me wanting to know more as each chapter began and ended.
Eira works as a therapist healing others' traumas. She has been having nightmares that have been weighing her down. It turns out that they're not nightmares but past memories from previous lives. She wakes up in a different realm, without her friends, and where a plague is spreading throughout the lands, causing darkness to souls(solliqas) Everyone has been waiting for her soul to come back to Majikaero to heal these souls with her light.
Her soul finds and reconnects with Nyx, her true soulmate. The soulmate she's had in past lives. Nyx has the plague and has failed other healing attempts from healers to rid him of the darkness. I loved watching even from the very beginning of their reconnection his protectiveness of her and his need to be close and her protectiveness to not let anyone speak badly of him. Watching him create shadow animals for her so she smiled was so sweet. I was in love with him when he started calling her “firefly”.
But, will their dark and light be able to work together to fight what is coming?
💬 This book weaves political turmoil with mystical elements, creating a compelling narrative of love and resilience. The chemistry between Eira and Prince Nyx, set against themes of mental health and healing, adds depth and intrigue. A thrilling and emotionally rich fantasy romance.
The Light Within by Carliann Jean is a unique romantic fantasy unlike any you’ve read before. In this lovely book we follow Eira whose nightmares are not just nightmares but the beginning of a journey where not only must she discover herself but also a realm full of magic and intriguing characters.
I really loved all the thought and details that went into the realms and characters of this book - every little thing was explained so well that even the most intricate parts were easy to understand as the story came alive across the pages.
The authors writing style is just beautiful and flows smoothly throughout the story without pause making it an easy read as the story heats up and really starts to pull you in. I especially loved having all the multiple POV’s - that really brought the story to life because this book is full of unique and complex characters.
Eira is a very strong female lead - I really liked her character and how she wasn’t instantly perfect at everything and had actual struggles to overcome. Her relationship with her friends is so well written you can actually feel her emotions for them when reading. The slow-burn relationship with Nyx was definitively my favorite part of the book - I absolutely love when ‘he falls first’ in a book.
The Light Within is one heck of a magical adventure full of unique bonds, shifters, magic, found family, beautiful world-building, romance, and is really a magical romantasy about healing and finding ‘The Light Within’.
