He’s the only one who can save hers

And designates himself her bodyguard to keep her safe. Zoe knows the only way to catch the culprit is to use herself as bait—endangering her life and her heart. Alpha hero ✔. Heroine who finds her inner strength ✔. So, why didn't this book work for me? Lots of little things threw me out of the story continually, maybe better editing was needed. Also, I didn't need to be reminded, again continually, how Noah was trying so hard to be a great field agent or that Zoe felt intimated by her sister's moxie and career.

Zoe Goodwyn has lived her whole life in the shadow of her vivacious twin, Allison. But Zoe will do anything for her, even drop her plans when Allison needs a dog sitter. Now she finds out that Allison's life has been threatened and she is in hiding under the protection of Fresh Pond Security. Zoe is asked to take Allison's place to find evidence that will lead to the person threatening Allison.

Noah Casey is looking for a way to redeem himself and impress his boss. Protecting Zoe as she goes undercover is his ticket back to field work and more important cases. What he wasn't looking for was the red-hot attraction he feels for the unassuming Zoe, especially when she finds her inner strength and a moxie of her own.

I don’t usually like to read series books out of order, but I also know with Harlequin category romance series the books can usually be read as standalones, so when the author offered ARC copies of this, the second book in her Fresh Pond Security series, I jumped at the chance and was very excited to receive a copy. And while I subscribe to the author’s monthly newsletter, I will confess a little secret – I’d not ever actually read any of her books before now.

I’m happy to say that I was thoroughly impressed. It’s very well written, with fully developed and fleshed out characters. When we meet Noah, who other readers had already met in the first book, enough information about the events of that book was seamlessly woven into the narrative that I didn’t feel lost or wondering what I had missed. On the contrary, I was very intrigued by Fiona and especially Jason, who occasionally seemed like a bit of a jerk here, that I’ve already ordered the first book in the series and look forward to diving into their story.

But back to Zoe and Noah. We meet Zoe as she’s on her way to her sister’s apartment to check on her dog, and we quickly learn that Zoe has spent most of her adult life looking out for her twin. It’s obvious that Zoe is the nurturer in the family. When she is attacked in her sister’s apartment, Noah, who works for Fresh Pond Security, happens to be stationed outside the building doing surveillance, and rushes to her rescue. Thinking, of course, that she is Allison, a hard hitting television news journalist working on a corruption expose which has put her life in danger.

Allison. I didn’t much like Allison. She and Zoe may be twins, but they and their lives are worlds apart. Zoe is a schoolteacher, and is thoughtful and considerate. Allison seemed to be thoughtless and inconsiderate, walking all over Zoe. Indeed, at one point her selfish actions put Zoe and the others in even more danger. Of course we don’t get to know Allison as well or get inside her head the way we do with Zoe, but I very much admired Zoe. Noah’s boss wants her to impersonate Allison and go to the television studio, with Noah along pretending to be Allison’s boyfriend, so that Noah can do some covert spying/information tracking. Zoe is naturally afraid, and I really liked that her responses, her feelings and fear, were portrayed realistically for a civilian who does not have any training, security, self-defense, or otherwise. But she does have guts.

I loved Noah. He’d been sidelined to a desk job after taking a bullet on his previous assignment, and being out in the field, guarding Zoe and being active in this investigation, is his chance to prove himself. Close quarters and facing danger together often leads to attraction, but the author allowed their feelings for each other to build up slowly. Of course the events take place over a fairly short period of time, but the relationship still did not feel rushed.

The supporting characters were never wasted in this tense and engrossing story. Once the action ramped up it was nonstop, and for awhile it all felt pretty hopeless, as I had no idea what would happen next or how Zoe would survive. I was riveted from beginning to end.

Harlequin Intrigue (March 2024)
Series: Fresh Pond Security #2

LEO: He is a former NSA analyst officer, current operative with a private security firm that has government contracts.

Setting: Boston

BIPOC Characters: neither MCs

Steam/Spice Level: open door, in the room, but very soft focus

POV: third person, past tense, dual POV, no antagonist POV

Standalone: part of a series, could be read standalone, Book #1’s couple are the secondary characters here, have a lot of page time

Does the Dog Die?: No! Though he does get a small injury to his leg.
__________
Quick Thoughts: Bodyguard romance. Noah is a security specialist who used to be an NSA analyst. He’s been trying to prove himself after a previous incident at the security firm where he works. (Incident is in the first book of the series)

Zoe is an elementary school teacher who becomes involved in a deadly case because her TV news reporter twin sister is trying to expose corruption.

Fast paced. The twin sister is a monster who is so self centered she nearly gets everyone killed and doesn’t seem to have any real remorse for it. She’s also a total jerk to the FMC who is literally putting her life on the line to save her. She doesn’t appear to change her ways, which is unsatisfying but also pretty true to real life narcissists.

The romance between Zoe and Noah is fine. They make a good pair and he deals with her extreme insecurities well. Granted, with a sister like that, tearing her down, the confidence issues feel earned.

Solid action scenes. The plot requires quite a bit of hand-waving - but it’s entertaining.

The HEA worked for me and set up a situation for the next book in the series well. I’ll be picking up Book #3 when it comes out.

In the second book of the FRESH POND SECURITY series, the heroine goes to her twin sister's apartment to take care of her dog. She didn't expect an obstruction to happen to her, in which the hero came to her rescue. The heroine finds out that her sister is investigating a dangerous situation that brought trouble to her family and herself. The hero is tasked to protect the heroine as the investigation is underway. Along with the current trouble, there's an attraction brewing between the hero and the heroine. How will the relationship fare between the main characters as the current threat makes the situation dire for both of them.

This is a nice addition to the romantic suspense series. There is enough information about the first book in this Veronica Forand series that is provided in the second book for readers not to miss reading the first book, though it would be best to read the first book for in-depth looks of certain characters that made appearances in this story. The story is entertaining and the characters have strong presence in the book. Of course, some of the characters were not as likable but essential to the story. It would also be nice if a bit more details were added in certain areas of the story, but my personal preference wasn't detrimental to my reading enjoyment. Overall, an enjoyable book and a romantic suspense series to look forward to read.

I need to start by saying that I haven’t yet read the first book in the Fresh Pond Security series.

Zoe Goodwyn’s job to dog sit turns into so much more when she arrives at her sister’s New York apartment to find the neighbor dead and the ‘bad guy’ still there. Zoe and her sister are identical twins but they are worlds apart in personality. Despite this, Zoe and Fresh Pond Security agent Noah Casey find themselves digging deep into a heart-stopping situation that Allison had uncovered.

Fast paced, heart-pounding action and smoldering passion keep the read engrossed with this story.

While I wouldn't normally pick up a Harlequin romance; I found this to be a very fun, escape worthy, action-packed romance! I wouldn't be surprised If Allison was based in part on Hank Phillippi Ryan :)

A beach read or weekend page turner. I enjoyed the introduction of a new story with a new character focus. Someone who hasn’t read book 1 can still enjoy The Twin’s Bodyguard, without feeling lot. I absolutely loved the adventure, suspense, with a touch of romance.

Loved The Twin's Bodyguard. The characters were fascinating and the plot was intriguing! I couldn't put the book down and I couldn't wait for the ending. Even though I didn't want the story to end. As Veronica Forand says "Enjoy the thrill ".

This was a good mystery. It also gives you information on how families function as children parents and siblings. How children feel their o.k. to move on and others are left to take care of things. It was good to see Zoe's transformation to her sister.
