Hunter In Me

Rate this book
I’m a witch and a hunter, and I’ve been working in Atlanta in a secret agency that keeps the supernaturals under control for ten years.

When I get the sad news from home that my powerful warlock father was murdered, I’m determined to find his killers.
Predicting his death, my father left me some hints.

Following them, I end up in a small town in Pennsylvania called Whispering Pines, in my mother's old house I'd never heard of.

Did I mention she was killed too? I was three.

In search of the killers, I cross paths with the town witch and discover a portal to a realm full of witches, vampires, and a pack of wolves with their handsome alpha.

This small town is full of supernatural problems, and from what I learned from the alpha and the townspeople, my mother was the one solving them back when she lived here.

Soon, I realized that my father's killers weren't after him; they were after me. He always said I was more than a witch. That I was different. So what am I?

The questions start piling up. And I'm sure now that the answers are hidden in my mother's past.
I wish she'd left me some clues.
And she did, but in a more alluring form than I’d expected.

Hunter In Me is the first book in the Queen of Gates urban fantasy series with slow-burn romance.

This is book one of the Queen of Gates series and the main character is witch and hunter, Keira Hale, who has worked in Atlanta for the last few years, keeping supernaturals under control. She left home as soon as she could and was cut off by her father. She ending up working for a secret agency, but uses mainly knives or guns now, after hurting a mundane woman when she used her magic to take down a target when she first started. Her mother died when she was little, so she has no real knowledge of just exactly what her magic can do and is was difficult to control. She got a sudden call from her adopted brother Simon, whose parents died in the same attack that killed her mother all those years ago, and who was taken in by her father. He calls to inform her that their father has been killed and she has to return for the first time in three years, to help plan his funeral. Her father has left her a note saying that his death is connected to that of her mother all those years ago and that she needed to go back to where it all started, which is a small town in Pennsylvania, called whispering Pines. She ends up at the home her mother once owned, only to find it is inhabited by a ghost called Penny, who she can see and hear, which is a first! Something has been triggered with her father’s death and she will only find more questions than answers, as she looks into past events. It seems her parents knew she was more than just a witch, but what exactly is unknown.

Her mother was the one to sort out problems in Whispering Pines and there are only a couple of people who knew her back then, that are still alive, although one is in an asylum. One is a witch who has hidden her powers from Keira and knew she was coming. Another old friend of her mother gives her some information, but is clearly holding some information from her. Her house ghost tells her of a mysterious person, she will only call ‘him’, who was responsible for her being tied to the house and grounds, instead of the cemetery where she used to be. She hears mention of an alley in town, where supernatural beings have obviously been seen, and soon finds a portal to a real m of supernaturals, who use it to come to this realms as needed. Following her senses, she ends up going through a secret doorway to a bar, where she is not necessarily welcome, finding vampires and wolf shifters, amongst others. The wolf sifter alpha, Riven, denies any of them were responsible for any killings on her side of the portal and she soon learns of dangerous spirits that have seemingly possessed humans but soon killed them. The humans were unable to stand the possession for more than a few days and Keira finds out this is what her mother had been working on. She wanted to exorcise the spirits without killing the person possessed, who were her good friends. The spirits believed her mother had knowledge of a gate, which is important to them and is why they are now after her, but killed her father instead. She hasn’t found any clues left behind by her mother and so is at a distinct disadvantage in trying to solve this problem. Something she has done, supposedly has triggered these spirits and whoever killed her parents, to start back up and she is told that it is all her fault! A massive cliffhanger ending for this story, with so much more to be unravelled and answers supplied, to figure out what is happening and who is responsible!

The story would have been catching if not for the lack of things I miss in a truly good book. The writing style was a bit odd for my taste, but I could get over that. What really bothered me that I did not get any closer to any of the characters, did not get to know them, their personality, drive, nad did not understand where they stand, so I could not really relate. And actually how it ended is just breaking a story in half, but I will not read more books because I did not get invested.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

DNF.

I'm 21 pages in, I'll see if it gets better with her actually properly back home, but I'm not hopeful.

Typing as I read, so not a good indicator so far for the book.

MC grew up with a controlling parent, that included having her followed all the time. Unsurprisingly she left home at 18. Daddy dearest only deigned to let her take the car he gave her when she turned 16. He cut off access to the family finances, (me, okay, that's fair you leave you don't get family money then she adds), he also froze her bank accounts! -- But MC says this "I didn't hold it against him, after-all it was my choice to leave and that was part of being independent, finding my own way."
So its years later and she's already showing she's an idiot by justifying her father basically stealing her money, and belongings because she wanted to be independent. Money in your own bank accounts, is by definition your money, unless daddy dearest is using your accounts to hide money from the tax man!
I mean it's no wonder she's got a tough gig policing supernaturals, that involves fighting & her possibly maimed or killed, but she by her own words just has a shitty place to live and barely scrapes by. She's been trained to be a doormat.

The author is also contradictory, one minute it took her years of being on her own to get her powers under control, then a few lines down, daddy dearest trained her in fighting and controlling her powers.

She could still have had an incident when first out in a real battle, almost killing a 'civilian', because she was 18 and over enthusiastic in trying to save the woman from the supernatural predator. Something like 'putting combat magic into real practice was different from all my years of training. I almost killed the woman I was trying to save, if she'd not have moved.... but after that incident I was more careful and took the non supernaturals likely responses into account...' -- It shows growth, but doesn't contradict backstory.

She's all 'he was right, I was too young and too powerful to be set loose.' Then justifying his quickly finding her after she 'ran away' and telling her 'I taught you everything I could, let life teach you the rest'. Then freezing her bank accounts.

I mean sure that makes sense, let an overly powerful teen loose without access to their own money and what just cross your fingers that they won't get into situations that means they have to use their stupidly powerful magic to protect themselves while they're trying keep a roof over their head and eat? /sarcasm

Actually you know what, I don't care, she's an idiot and a doormat for the 'powerful' men in her life, first her dad, then her boss. So the likelihood that she'll justify stuff that's bad (also makes no sense, Vampires etc. I can ignore reality, but someone freezing an 18 year olds accounts... mum popped around for a visit as I was typing this and I griped at her re that explaining what I needed to finish doing, not even making that point and she was 'how can he freeze her accounts'. -- I know USA set but still...) from others in her life, probably the love interest.... means no I'm done. I've got a mountain of books on my TBR, only a few I've bothered to add to GR, so I'll try one of those instead.

This is my first book from this author and it's my type of read so I was excited to read this story. However, this book left me with mixed feelings because while I enjoyed the story a lot, it gave me no answers to any of the unanswered questions I had from the very beginning of the story. I have to give kudos because the author wrote the story in a way that kept me hooked with the mystery and suspense. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time and I completely devoured this book. However, I feel like if you read the description of the story, you get exactly what you read in all of the pages of the book, nothing more, nothing less. It's hard to explain why I enjoyed the book and felt disappointed at the same time, but I am excited to read the next book. It says that this story is a slow burn but right now it's a no burn because the main character Keira isn't in a relationship or beginning a relationship with anyone in my eyes, yet. However, I absolutely enjoyed Keira and all of the side characters., especially Penny. I am excited to see if Keira will get into a relationship with Riven or the unexpected quest that arrived at the end of the story. This story has a whole list of paranormal characters and they each bring something to the story making it more interesting. I am excited to read the next book to because there is still so much to find out regarding Keira's mom, dad, Whispering Pines, the lily pond, the "talons/claws" and so much more, as this book felt more like a teaser to me. I just know that it definitely left me wanting more.

The writing was pretty good for the most part, but the book left me feeling a bit unfulfilled. There are a lot of questions. And a handful of people that you think might be important, but never appear again, or only vaguely and by then you've forgotten them. And then questions, and more questions and even more questions. And a few more people but I was burned last time so I don't care to invest myself again.

There is nothing wrong with developing a lot of questions and a mysterious world and finding things out along with the narrator or mc. But there wasn't ever any payoff. There is a cliff-hanger, sort-of, but it's not after any sort of plot development or even a minor discovery. It's just more unknown. So it wasn't a bad book, just not quite for me.

Unfortunately, it feels like there isn't anything to hold onto or look forward to. Just another book with more questions and no movement in knowledge or character or plot isn't that exciting to me. And the mc seems oddly uninterested in what set everything off and changed her entire world a few weeks ago.

Our heroine is a witch and a hunter, so she is used to the magical world. But when her father is murdered, she is drawn back to her hometown where she learns that there are still a lot of secrets she doesn't know. And a lot of them revolve around her.

This is book one of the series, so a fine place to start.

This is an urban fantasy story with all the usual races. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting that has lots of secrets to be discovered. I always enjoy exploring a new world and this one was no exception. The characters are also well done, particularly our heroine who is tough and smart, but still have plenty to learn. The plot moves at a good pace with a nice blend of action and intrigue. Overall, I really enjoyed this introduction to the world and I look forward to more in this series.

Highly recommended.

I really liked this, almost never predictable, book. The main character Kiera is very relatable. She is tough but at the same time vulnerable. Even Though she is a witch and a hunter she tries to live her life as normal as possible. Even choosing to use normal weapons instead of her unpredictable witch powers, because she does not accidentally wants to harm someone.

When her father is killed and she goes to search for his murder she has to start a whole new life and finds out more about her legacy. I like the way the mystery unfolds, and how in the process Kiera settles into her new life. Making friends and discovering new (or old) enemies.

The storytelling is perfectly paced, never too fast so you get lost, and never too slow to get bored. The book ends with a great cliffhanger that makes me very curious to know how the story continues.

Absolutely Fantastic!

This book was SOOO good. I really enjoyed the story of Keira, who is the daughter of two powerful magical parents but left home at 18 to go her own way and is now a hunter, investigating her father’s death after he died rather suddenly. After finding a few clues she heads up to Whispering Pines where her mother (who died when she was really young) still had a house. But instead of getting answers, she has even more questions. Like why is she seeing ghosts all of a sudden? What are these spirits that are overtaking humans and where are they coming from?

She is working against the clock to not only find out about her parents’ deaths but to take out the spirits who are somehow coming into her realm and causing havoc before they take her out.

Loved this story – can’t wait to see what happens next!

DNF at 15% This was bad, so bad I literally double checked that I was reading the same book as all those 4-5 star reviews. There are no descriptions..for anything. Or explanations of who people are as you meet them.
“I parked the car in front of the entrance to our house. With a heavy heart, I approached the dark double doors, and it took a moment before I heaved a deep breath and pushed them open.”
What does your house look like? What color is it? How big? SOMETHING!
““Keira, you’re back.” Julie entered the courtyard and rushed toward me. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered into my ear as we hugged. “I need to find the one who’s responsible for this.” I pulled away.”
Who is Julie? What does she look like? And that’s a strange transition in a conversation, she didn’t even say hi.

Hunter In Me is the first book in the Queen of Gates series. It's about Keira, a Hunter who sets out to investigate the murder of her father. She soon discovers that things are much more complex than she anticipated. I liked Keira. She's tough and determined but she has a soft side as well. I enjoyed her interactions with Penny, Dolly and Riven. I'm guessing that Riven might be a love interest in future books but there's no sign of that yet.

Hunter In Me ends in a cliffhanger which I found disappointing because I wanted to find out what happens next. With the exception of the cliffhanger, I really liked this book. I found the story engaging and the mystery intriguing. I look forward to reading the next book.

Hunter in Me, Book 1 in the Queen of Gates series is a paranormal, slow burn, mystery.

Keira sets out to investigate her father’s murder and finds herself in her mother’s old home in small town Pennsylvania.

Pick your poison, you've got a witch/hunter🦄, witches 🧙🏻‍♀️,vampires 🧛🏻‍♂️ and wolves 🐺 in this supernatural heavy town. Settle in to find out more about Keira and her family.

I was really hoping I’d be more into reading this book based on the description but didn’t love it as much as I thought I would. I would still give the series another chance because I want to know what happens next, dang cliffhanger! 🧗‍♀️

Thank you to the author, Lana Melan, and Booksprout for the opportunity to read this book!

Such a good story so far.

I love the story line and the characters already as well. Who doesn’t love a good mixture of witches, demons and ghosts and werewolves and who knows what else may show up too! I’m totally hooked. Also that ending.. left me wanting to know who that new mysterious character is and how they connect with what’s going on with our main female lead. So good!

I wish the next book was available to read so I could find out what happens next. If I could only read the whole series that would be awesome. Haha. That’s how much I like this story so far.

I definitely recommend this as a must read to those who are a fan of this type of genre as well as to those who may want to give it a try anyways.

Hunter in Me Book 1 of the Queen of Gates Series By Lana Melyan.
Lana Melyan did not disappoint with her new series!
Keira is a witch and a hunter of the supernatural, she returns home to New Orleans for her father’s funeral. She wants to investigate his death, and thinks his death is related to her mother’s death when she was very young. He leaves her a note that sends her to Pennsylvania, to her mother’s house. She uncovers more questions than answers. New friends and a possible love interest in Riven. I found the book. captivating, intriguing, and a little on the edge of my seat. Book 1 ended with a cliffhanger and can’t wait to see what is in store for her.

Hunter In Me is the first book in the Queen of Gates series. Boy, is this series off to a bang, or what?! This book is an engaging, entertaining, easy-reading page-turner with a storyline full of humor, supernatural-paranormal action, twists, suspense, and one heck of a murder mystery. Then, there is another mystery. The characters are also engaging, fun, and relatable, though not all humans. I especially love Keira and hope to see a romance develop for her. The book ended on a surprising note, so I hope the next book comes out soon!

This is a fast paced paranormal mystery that involves an interesting plot with a young woman, who happens to be a witch, and experiences a mysterious tragedy she must piece together as her life is now in danger.

I really enjoyed the entire premise of the book and how Keira is unwilling to give up on helping others. She’s brave and passionate, and determined to find out the secrets she’s been shielded from, and is written as a complex character who is entertaining to read. I look forward to the upcoming books in this series. Any fans of paranormal fiction and mystery will love this book.

Kiera is a hunter that is afraid to use her witch magic, until the untimely event of her dad’s death. It drives her to her mom’s hometown to solve the case of who killed both her parents. The mystery itself is very intriguing. I like how the author uses different sets of characters and fantasy species throughout the novel.
However, I was waiting for the slow-burn romance to kick in. I thought it might be with Riven the werewolf, but the interactions never seemed to play out that way.
So great novel for a fantasy mystery with a cliffhanger ending. Hope to see more romance in the next book!.

Fun mystery and some entertaining action! Kiera has had quite the bad time lately; father and mom both being dead and secrets galore adding to the dangers in Kiera’s life. Kiera sets out to find some answers to some important questions; like who murdered who parents, but things aren’t exactly easy going for her. She’s a tough lady though! She’s a kick booty hunter, and has some witch going on too. We have a cliffhanger type of scenario going on here, so be prepared for that. Light on the romance too; possibilities, but nothing fully formed. Thinking a slow burn for this series. Excited to see how this series develops!

An original paranormal mystery! ❤️

OK, first of all I have to say I love Lana's writing style and her original worlds and story lines; yes, there are the usual supes as witches, wolfshifters, demons, ghosts, etc, but the way she writes about them is so unique, I'm always enthralled by her stories! 😍
And this book is not an exception, the mystery is present through all the book, keeping me on edge and wanting to know what is going on! 🤨🤔🧐
I really like Kiera and Penny, and we are yet to discover who the MMC will be: the hot wolfshifter or the new guy on the last chapter?, btw, who is he? 😯
The next book can't come soon enough, I need answers! 💕

This is my first book with this author. I liked the fmc, Keira, for the most part. She was a determined person and caught on to most clues quickly with follow through. There are a few troubling misses such as the possibility of her "younger brother" being possessed and the fact that the gate she is looking for is probably the lily pond. KAs far as romance, there isn't any. An old boyfriend was introduced early and quickly but hasn't been part of the story since. She has also met the Alpha, Riven, but nothing other than some assistance in investigation has happened. A true cliffhanger with a new character happens that may bring another potential into the story.

This was a great first book in a new paranormal series by Lana Melyan. I loved Kiera's character and there were a number of great secondary characters included as well. I hope we get to see more of Kiera's brother and friends from New Orleans as well as Penny, Riven and some other people introduced in Whispering Pines. I am excited for the second book in the series to find out more about Kiera's powers, her mother and who killed both of her parents.

I knew that there was a cliffhanger but it is a big one. A lot of questions and so far no answers. I do have a feeling that there is a book or something like that from her Mom at the house she was raised at. I hope the next book gives us some answers. Then maybe we can find an answer as to how to stop it. What ever it my be. This story has been very interesting. I have enjoyed it and look forward to the next. Meredith,Lincoln, Axel, and baby Zelda are the main characters in the story Meredith is a hunter she hunted the werewolves extinguishing them
Lincoln and axle or werewolves she happened to fall in love with both men at the same time I could tell you how the story ends, but that would ruin it, but let’s just say their journey is a fulfilling one and just maybe everybody gets what they want in the end this is a must read definite page Turner will definitely recommend.

I really enjoyed reading Hunter In Me. I love the main character, Keira. She's fun and a little snarky. The other characters are also well developed and fun to read. The storyline is interesting as Keira tries to find her father's killer, as well as finding out more about her mother's life and murder. There's a lot of potential in this series, and I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next, especially after where this book ends.

Took awhile to warm up to the main character and get into the story but once Keira arrives in Whispering Pines the adventure begins and she encounters a nice mix of humans, supernaturals and enjoy Penny the ghost.
The story and intrigue flow at nice pace and as book progresses get to connect and discover more of the main character Keira. The book ends on a cliff hangar and interesting to see what happens next.
Lovely read with good mix of magic, supernatural and mystery.

You have Kiera who's a witch and hunter just trying live a normal life as she possibly can until her father is killed, with her father's sudden death she goes on the search for his murderer. She heads back to small town called Whispering Pines in Pennsylvania where her mother still owns a house. There we meet a lot of interesting side characters including the potential love interest and we end up with more questions then answer which setups well for the next book.

This is book 1 of Queen of Gates and what a way to start the series. It is a page turning, suspenseful story of magic, shifters and a quest for Keira to find out who killed her father before anyone else dies. This story had me hooked from the first chapter and kept me guessing until the end, that is a cliff hanger. Now I can't wait to see how book 2 turns out.

This is the first book and it introduces Kiera a powerful with who ends up in her dead mom's town after her father's murder and discovers a few things that do not quite equal up. As expected in a new town makes new friends, discovers secrets, meets a hot alpha and a few other things that keep her guessing and busy. It made me laugh and groan and wonder what other secrets she might discover. Just a fun easy read I really liked and want more in the series.
