thank you for allowing me to review this book!

unfortunately, the writing wasn't engaging to me and i didn't quite understand the meaning behind all the metaphors, which made it hard to enjoy.

Meditations and Midnight include very descriptive, long, and thought out pieces. While I didn't resonate with some of these, I can appreciate the thought and skill that goes into writing these poems. If you enjoy longer pieces, you'll enjoy this collection. Thank you to NetGalley and Loyola Press for this eARC in exchange for my honest review.

Meditations at Midnight by Gary Jansen is a captivating exploration of spirituality and self-discovery, delving into the profound moments that emerge in the stillness of night. Jansen weaves together personal anecdotes, mystical insights, and timeless wisdom to create a book that resonates deeply with seekers of inner peace.

At its core, Meditations at Midnight invites readers to embrace the quiet moments of darkness as opportunities for reflection and transformation. Jansen skillfully intertwines his own experiences with spiritual teachings from various traditions, offering a holistic perspective on navigating life's challenges and finding meaning in the midst of chaos.

What I found most compelling about this book is its authenticity. Jansen's writing is sincere and heartfelt, making it easy for readers to connect with his journey. Each chapter unfolds like a meditation, guiding us through themes of faith, doubt, solitude, and renewal. Whether you're a seasoned spiritual seeker or someone simply seeking solace in a hectic world, there's much to glean from the gentle wisdom within these pages.

Jansen's approach is accessible yet profound, making Meditations at Midnight a valuable companion for anyone seeking deeper spiritual insights. The book encourages us to embrace vulnerability and uncertainty, urging us to confront our fears and embrace the mysteries of existence.

Overall, Meditations at Midnight is a thought-provoking read that encourages us to find light in the darkest hours. It's a book that invites contemplation and offers practical wisdom for navigating life's challenges with grace and resilience. Highly recommended for those on a spiritual journey or anyone looking to deepen their connection to the divine.

This is a small book of poetry and prose about life's lessons and observances, memories glad and sad. You will find pages where you might laugh, nod in agreement or perhaps shed a tear. It can be read in one sitting or read a little at a time to contemplate, meditate and journal if you enjoy doing that.

I was not familiar with Mr. Jansen or his other writings before I read this book. I do enjoy jumping into some smaller works of authors who are unknown to me and I did enjoy his style of writing. So my only complaint would be that the description for this book did not indicate how much some of his writing would be influenced by his relationship with God. If that is your target audience, I would say they will enjoy the book. But some people's history with the church would mean this would not be the book for them. The description should have been clear that some of his writings would be about the church and his faith and people could then decide whether to read the book or not.

Thank you NetGalley and Loyola Press for a copy of this ARC to review.

Some eloquent phrases, including these two (from different poems) that seem to bookend a single day quite nicely:
"In the distance, the crowing of early dawn."
"This desert sunset turns the sea to wine."

This book contains poetry, but also a section of short stories seemingly intended as parables, and another section of autobiographical anecdotes. I didn't see much connection between the sections, so they ended up feeling disjointed. I feel the author would have been better served by turning these into three separate books, and then expanding on each. The poetry resonated the most with me. There is a strong religious thread through much of the book, particularly in the poetry segment. I found this interesting to watch for and consider as I read through the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing this eARC for unbiased review.

Thank you Netgalley for this advanced copy. ( published March 2024)
Some beautiful images in the poetry, a capturing title and cover.
“moonlight pours through the olive trees”. “Time hangs still in pink sunlight”
The most memorable works: “Brush strokes “. and “Re-Brainer” ,”Follow the thread”, but overall this was not a book for me.
Typical of the Catholic faith the women’s appearances in the book: girl with her head leaning on a coffee stained cafe wall, an osteoporosis elder woman. The author redeems himself with a memory of his mind reading mom.

Good allusions to Biblical moments, but overall my impression is Jansen is the man who believes he is a magnet to misfits… madmen… I suspect he seeks them out. He believes his own hype.
This may be the book for you, for Catholics, but I am the friend who evicted him for his “silly comment.” (“Follow the Thread” )

Thank you, NetGalley, for allowing me to read this book and give others my input ✨️

This collection of poetry and prose is a work of art. Like most poetry books or artwork on canvas, it can be great to some and not so much to others.
For me personally, nothing in Gary's book really stood out. There aren't any lines that I highlighted that I would remember and quote forever.
However, there wasn't anything in the book that I didn't like either. The flow of each paragraph that I read had beauty to it. Like I said, work of art, art's just different for everyone.

Solid three stars for Meditations at Midnight ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Gary Jansen's poetic meditations and vignettes create a worthy "thread" to follow. He describes the journey of Jesus from Gethsemane to Golgotha with refreshing clarity. His travels through Prague and Paris demonstrate how the mad and the drunk can inspire, despite the detritus. His meeting with "Brother Lawrence the Rebrainer" and his magic paintbrush would be a fine children's book for adults. The creative Spirit we find in Mr. Jansen's adventures and musings offers solace and light.
"I admit. I drank (the poetry and prose of these mediations) but only because I was thirsty..." for the hopeful perspective this book provides.

Meditations at Midnight by Gary Jansen is a poetic and introspective collection that explores humanity’s paradoxes through stories, verses, and musings. While not every piece resonated with me, I appreciate the depth and skill behind Jansen's writing. The collection is ideal for those who enjoy longer, reflective works. Jansen guides readers through meditative practices, making midnight a metaphor for self-discovery. Whether you're new to meditation or an experienced practitioner, this collection offers something thought-provoking for all.

I’m not sure the description does the book justice. Poetry books seldom do, but this one was particularly disengaged from the contents of the book.
This short collection comprises poems and very short stories that have to do with religion and travel, occasionally both.
Decent, but didn’t wow me in any way, except for one clever line. But then again, it only maybe forty-five minutes to read, so … Thanks Netgalley.

I am not typically someone who picks up a book of poetry but I found myself quickly drawn into this small, but powerful collection of poetry and meditations on the various ways in which we navigate the world--both big and small. Jansen's observations are keen, and his use of language lovely. His earlier work is evident in some of the pieces while others feel like a fresh departure for this talented author. These are meditations I will muse on not just at midnight, but throughout the day.

This was an enjoyable collection to me because it felt really personal. I felt as though I had a window into some of the author's truly intimate moments. The poetry was smooth and the prose was really interesting because it took me to specific locations I've never been, and I felt as though I got to visit too. Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this

Loved this book of poetry and prose. I gleaned so many insightful gems from reading this, that stayed with me long after I finished reading. And went back a few times to let it really sink in. I wasn’t really a big poetry reader before, but it sparked an interest to read more. And to check out this author’s other books as well. I really enjoyed reading him.

A profound piece of work by Gary Jansen. I have enjoyed his previous books, but this one was just exceptional. The writing is very immersive, inspiring and will certainly captivate a reader. Very personal and so human. If you’re looking for something new to dive into, Meditation at Midnight is what I recommend.

A lot of influence here from the modernist authors, especially in developing an anthology not unlike that of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Much to unpack here from Biblical perspectives to Parisian escapades. Huge fan! Would definitely recommend!

I really love this book. Thoughtful and spiritual. And I love the design. This is a book about loss and joy and has a few travel stories which involve seeking some things that are always just out of reach. Great bedtime reader.

A beautiful and calming read. Unique collection poems and some short stories. I heard the author speak and he said the names of the sections have special significance and turn out to be a code for literature geeks. Haven't figured it out yet! A+

This book was written beautifully. The only thing that was hard for me was trying to fully grasp what was going on when the poems were so short. There could have been more detail added, however the book was enjoyable. :)

I quickly devoured this lovely collection…then immediately started over, highlighting the many phrases that spoke to me. A reader could thoroughly enjoy this, without much thought to the deeper meaning, simply because the language and imagery is so beautiful.

I know my limitations. I know that poetry is often utterly opaque to me, with literary fiction being not far behind.
I didn’t understand a large majority of this book, but it was a pleasant, calming read, filled with evocative settings and lovely turns of phrase.

I finished Meditations at Midnight in one sitting, not because it is relatively short, but because I legitimately did not want to put it down. It’s a collection of poetry and prose in a variety of styles and tones: dreamlike, somber, mysterious, whimsical, but always thought-provoking. One little story had me laughing, a moment later a poem left me feeling wistful, and another story kind of gave me the creeps. Though I cannot visualize, Gary Jansen’s descriptions of everything from sunsets to people were intricate and vivid enough that I had as clear a picture as I possibly could, and that’s no small feat!

As the book progresses, there are more and more mentions of God, prayer, and the like. I’m not at all religious but I was raised in religion. For me, reading these bits felt like I was observing something from long ago, but from a different angle. I didn’t mind it at first, but as I said, it seemed as though it came up more frequently the more I read, so it did start to throw me off. Then it occurred to me that there was no mention of the influence religion obviously has on Janson’s work in the description of the book, and I think that might bother some people. From what I can tell, Loyola Press is a religious publishing house, so that could be a clue, but I didn’t know this until after I read the book and it’s not reasonable to expect people to have this knowledge.

That aside, this really is a lovely little collection of stories and poems (with a gorgeous cover to boot). I’ve been over here living life thinking poetry wasn’t for me and with this book, Gary Jansen has helped me realize that poetry really is for everyone. I just had to keep looking for the stuff that works for me and now I feel inspired to really give poetry a chance!

Thank you to NetGalley and Loyola Press, from whom I received this eARC in exchange for an honest review.

A gorgeous, thought-provoking work of beauty! These poems, snippets, short stories, fables and sketches of bigger ideas or works is just so beautiful. You have to hold it in your hands. Packaging is great. Reminds me of the City Lights poetry series. There is some deeply, spiritual writing in these pages. The first part can be a little dark since they invoke the ultimate in suffering, but then it lightens up in artistic ways as you move through the book. Highly recommended, but be warned that if you don't like spiritual writing or the works of someone like Mary Oliver, this might not be for you. The author is not Mary Oliver, of course; he brings a different point of view, different experiences, but that's why we seek out new authors. Loved it! Gifting it to many friends this fall. It makes for great reading when the weather turns cooler.
