An unparalleled account of ordinary life in wartime Britain.
From January 1st 1939, to the end of the Second World War, Joan Strange kept a daily diary of her experiences. Alongside her record she collected news cuttings, photos and cartoons of the time.
Her notes range from the dramatic events of the world stage to the domestic difficulties of having in wartime Worthing. Comments on her allotment lie alongside speeches from Hitler and Churchill.
it was informative as to life was like during the war and was very informative. We in America have just our view of the war, but we forget our allies. I have grown appreciative of what the English people did and I am amazed how much they gave up for the war effort on the home front. I' be read some other diaries and found many simply reported the dailies. I appreciated this diarist very much!
I wanted to know so much more! What happened to Joan Strange after the war? What was her life like before the war? What was Worthing like? When she was wondering what was going to happen, or heard a rumor: did this turn out to be true or not? A real lack of footnotes, as well as lack of biographical information about Joan herself. Still very interesting.
Informative piece of work with a humorless outlook and human sufferings too...enjoyed the info on war as well as everyday as y life of the f as Emily and community...
Excellent memoir detailing what the home front was like for people living in Britain during WWII. The food, clothing, fuel and other shortages they had to deal with, news they received from the battle fronts. This is a book for all interested in this time and events.
