OH THIS WAS A GOOOOD SEQUEL! I'm soooo ready for book 3!
Cannot wait to find out more answers and just explore this world more. I still love the characters. I really loved the setting of the castle and the dark creepy forest, soo good!
I do wish the ending was drawn out a bit more since it felt slightly rushed, but other than that it was well paced, and easy to follow.
I really love this narrator, Kim Churchill does such an incredible job setting the vibe for the book. Really great voices for all the different characters.
thank you Netgalley and the publishers for a copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review!
Castle ever dark : the everlight series by Sara knightly
4.5/ 5 ⭐️ 1.5/5 🔥
This second installment of the everlight series is an ARC I received from netgalley ( release date : June 6,2024). Ivys integration into the castle sparks even more curiosity about what is the happening behind closed doors and the people involved. It feels like following a rabbit down a hole, never knowing when the next turn will be. There's a couple major twists that are shocking and sudden! The slow burn is delectable.
I was a little disappointed it took Ivy as long as it did to crack her fathers code. However, that was so minor in the grande scheme of this journey. I love Saras writing style and this series. I can't wait for Forest ever white!
This book is for you if you like:
Alice in wonderland vibes Mystery YA fantasy Slow burn
The secrets have bloomed . . . beware of the thorns. I devoured this captivating sequel in one sitting, utterly enthralled by the continuation of Ivy and York’s journey! The story masterfully weaves together themes of friendship, trust, and the unknown, with a dash of mystery and magic that will keep you spellbound.
I found myself deeply invested in Ivy's struggles, as her fears and anxieties were portrayed with remarkable realism. I'm now eagerly awaiting book three!
If you're a fan of YA fantasy, do yourself a favor and add this series to your reading list - you won't regret it!"
I requested and received an advance readers copy from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Wow oh wow! I thought I had questions during the first book, but this one gave me SO MANY MORE!
This book is much darker than the first one. There’s a lot of really messed up stuff happening in that castle that I really wasn’t expecting.
The entire book you don’t know who to trust (you definitely know who NOT to trust, but there’s still a lot of questions as to who you can)
There’s a little bit of romance in this book which was very sweet. While there wasn’t a lot of it, I did enjoy it and I can’t wait to learn more about the MMC in future books. Ember and Cora also seem like they have the potential to be great side characters and I’m also very curious about Sebastian.
You get the answers to a lot of questions from the first book, but now there are just so many more. I need the next book immediately!
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with an ARC copy of Castle Ever Dark.
Castle Ever Dark continues Ivy Rune’s story from Secrets Ever Green. Ivy finds herself in the Count’s castle, working as an assistant to Dr. Ply. Her position is precarious, because Dr. Ply doesn’t reveal much about his work and Ivy must earn his trust to receive more information. As she discovers other people in the castle, she is unsure of who to trust. There are secrets around every corner, and Ivy is determined to find out more about her father and what the Count and Dr. Ply have planned for the Transposers in the castle, including her best friend York.
I really enjoyed the continued mystery of Ivy’s story in book two of The Everlight Series. Knightly does a great job with the new characters in the Castle, and makes you unsure of who can be trusted.
Some of the questions from book one are answered, and Knightly sets up new questions that I’m looking forward to being revealed in the next book. Poor Ivy never seems to catch a break, but we finally see some good things happening for her in Castle Ever Dark and I felt so relieved for her character.
The atmosphere of the Castle is done really well. I liked how Ivy discovered different parts of it, and the descriptions of the settings in the Castle give you a feeling of how good and evil co-exists in the same place, among the different characters. Cora and Dr. Ply are really intriguing opposites in the story.
It was also nice to have some chapters from the Count’s POV, so we could get more of a first-hand look at his character. I am interested to find out more about him and the White Forest.
Castle Ever Dark is a fantastic read, if you enjoy YA based fantasy and magic. There is also a great gothic feel to the book, and a lot of mystery to keep the story interesting.
I was lucky enough to receive an eARC for both Secrets Ever Green and now Castle Ever Dark. I remember adoring Ivy and York and being so intrigued into their story. I was so curious to see where their story was going. In the second installment, we see just that. There’s a lot of mystery surrounding this new castle and the people in it. Overall I enjoyed it. I felt like the ending was rushed, but that could have been a decision made to feel like you were a character rushing at the end too.
This was good It had great plot and flowed so well, the narrator done an amazing job.
I did feel the last 30% of the book was slightly rushed and could have been drawn out slightly better. But this definitely wouldn’t stop me reading book 3 for sure.
Thank you netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review
What a great second book! The author has done a great job of maturing Ivy from the first book. I like the characters and the plot. It was unique and interesting. I kept waiting for a double cross and interestingly it never came. That was also refreshing. Can’t wait for book 3!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
At the end of the last book, I was very curious as to how this next book would go with Ivy, and her move into the castle as she takes on her new job, and a new life.
Ivy spends time in this book learning more about the castle and it's secrets, as well as more about her father and what happened to him through clues he left behind for her. During this time, she also discovers that her friend is also in the castle and is being experimented on and she decides that she must conduct a rescue mission.
The pacing of the story line of this book was great, and it often did not drag or have too much happening all at once to where you could get overwhelmed. I did not find myself getting bored, and instead I was able to read this book in one sitting.
Also, I'm not usually a fan of slow burn romances, but this was just so well done. The tension and the build up was just the perfect amount. I LOVE the fact that we even got some written from the Count's POV to show the other side of things and his way of thinking.
I am very excited for the next book after the way that this one left off!
The hold Sara Knightly’s characters have on me should be studied. This was one of the best sequels I’ve read. I have not felt this invested in the plot and characters of a book since I read Sara’s first book in The Everlight Series.
This book has elements of fantasy, mystery, friendship, and light romance. It builds upon the last book (Secrets Ever Green) flawlessly, so I recommend reading it first. Jack ended up being my favorite character by the end of this book. It was a very satisfying read.
As always, the narration by Kim Churchill was intriguing, dynamic, and a pleasure to listen to. I cannot wait to listen to the next installment!
Thank you for the Audio ARC, Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op.
I received an advanced review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the second book in the Everlight fantasy series. I read the first one a while ago and really enjoyed it, so I was excited to read this one as well. I was happy to be reading about Ivy again, and once again, I thought the author brought the story to life with beautiful vivid imagery. I feel like I should have re-read the first book again, if only to re-familiarise myself with the characters and some of the events from the previous book. I still really liked this though, and would like to read the next book.
Thank you to Booksirens and the author for a free copy to review.
I really liked Secrets Ever Green, and yet somehow this managed to be ten times better! It really closed a lot of gaps from the first book, but still leaves me desperate to know what happens next.
I really enjoyed getting to know Ivy more and uncovering the secrets of the castle. I also loved getting to dive deeper with all of the other characters in Castle Ever Dark - from Jack to Ember... even Anna! And the slow burn/ will-they-won't-they/ little bit forbidden romance does not disappoint. :)
I absolutely sped through this book in a day, so now I'm doomed to semi-patiently wait for Forest Ever White. But I freaking LOVE an author that treats me to the first chapter of the next book each time. ;) Overall - a series that I'll be recommending to all who will listen!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest review!
I immesely enjoyed this second installment of Sara Knightly's Everlight Series. I felt this was so much better than the first part, in terms of the plot, at least.
The story is well-paced and gets wonderfully intriguing as it progresses. The characters are brillinatly written, as well.
Overall, a great read and I can't wait to read what happens in the next installment when it comes out. --- Voluntarily reviewed after reading an ARC from Booksirens.
Castle Ever Dark is an intriguing continuation to a great series! We continue to follow Ivy as her life in the castle brings forth so many questions. A forbidden romance blossoms between her and Jack. I have been enjoying the series very much and can’t wait for book 3. However, I did rate this second book lower than the first. In my opinion it was less exciting. I also found the scenes dealing with human experimentation heard to listen to. I received a digital copy of this book from NetGalley in trade for my honest opinion. My thoughts are my own.
I absolutely loved this book much more than the first. Ivy is on a whole new adventure as the mystery finally gets revealed and everything falls into place! Ivy has me hanging on my seat with her acting, the romance, her intuition! Where Ivy leaves off in the first book, she comes back in this one with a bang and with a new confidence that just makes me want to rant about her after seeing how much she's grown! She's seriously a comfort character.
Castle Ever Dark" by Sarah Knightly is an enthralling sequel that builds upon the magical world introduced in its predecessor with even greater depth and complexity. The story continues to captivate with its rich tapestry of friendship, trust, and the allure of the unknown
Knightly's skillful storytelling shines through as she delves deeper into Ivy's character, portraying her struggles with remarkable realism. The growth Ivy experiences throughout the novel is both compelling and inspiring. The book's lush, vivid descriptions create a fantastical atmosphere that immerses readers completely in each scene.
The surprise developments and character evolutions add layers of excitement and keep the plot engaging. For fans of YA fantasy, this series is a must-read. Knightly's ability to blend mystery, magic, and emotional depth ensures that "Castle Ever Dark" is a memorable and highly recommended read
Thanks to Book Sirens for an ARC of this book. I read the first installment of this series and was anxious to read this one. As it turns out, there will be a third, but luckily, it’s not a cliffhanger. This story picks up where the last one left off, obviously, but the reason I mention this is because character names are mentioned as if the reader just finished the previous installment. Since it had been several months for me, it took me a little while to catch up and remember some of the people mentioned. That could be a “me” issue.
Ivy Rune, our hero, finds herself in the castle of the mysterious count, as a new assistant to the doctor there. She’s supposed to assist him in his experiments, which she soon learns are not typical. Dr. Ply is an evil character, and when Ivy first arrives at the castle, she is offered no comforts beyond the basics—a place to sleep in a cold room and eating cold food (like lumpy oatmeal), etc. He tells her she must earn special rewards by telling him everything, eschewing personal relationships, and following his directions to the letter.
Everybody she meets is distant, except the handsome Jack and the beautiful Cora, both of whom she met in the previous book. She has a bit of a crush on Jack, and apparently, he feels the same way about her. However, Ivy goes through stages of not knowing who she can trust because everyone seems to be spying on everyone else. She also feels compelled to find out more about her father’s disappearance because the last time he was seen, he was working as an assistant to Dr. Ply. Ivy’s father left her a series of journals with “clues” but she cannot figure out what they mean. Meanwhile, she discovers her best friend York is also in the castle, and is one of the people upon whom the doctor is conducting his experiments. And a new character is introduced, Ember, who helps Ivy figure out a few things. Ivy decides she must rescue York and, along with a few friends, GTHO of there.
In addition to seeing things from Ivy’s POV, we occasionally see things from the count’s POV. He’s a bitter man who wants something he lost a long time ago, and he’s willing to go to extreme measures to get it. This means, he’s willing to allow the doctor free reign to investigate whatever leads he perceives there might be.
Through a little bit of magic, Ivy manages to bring people over to her side, against the doctor and the count, and it turns into a rescue mission for more than just the three of them. When the book ends, they have managed to escape, but we don’t know how far they’ll get before the count catches up. There’s still a lot more to come, and I’m looking forward to book three.
Book two of the Everlight Series was just as awesome as the first. This to me feels like a fantasy book and has a small romance element woven into the story. Ivy is now living at the Castle (end of the 1st book) and is brought to work for Dr. Ply. She meets Anna first and who does not dealt nicely with Ivy. (We find out why later in the book). The Castle isn't what you'd expect of a castle either. The area where Ivy is kept is old, dark and not very attractive. It's cold and unwelcoming, leaving her homesick but determined to find out what happened to her father and what the clues in the journal mean. She passes a bit of time earning her "position" with Dr. Ply and enduring the loneliness of the expectations set to her before she meets "friends" from the previous book. York, Jack and Cora are central to this book and their adventure continues in an interesting manner. Ivy continues to work on solving the clues left to her by her dad and is pulled into the darkness of the castle. She works on helping to save not only herself but in the castle and her friends as well as she learns the dark secrets hidden in the castle. The book is well paced, with lots of details and great characters. Once again, the story ends on a kind of cliff hanger and you have to wait for the next book to find out the fate of all involved but it's okay because the story is so well written, I'm confident the next installment will be just as great a story. One suggestion, do NOT read this book out of order. I'm glad I went back and got the first book to read prior to beginning this one because you definitely want the background into the main character(s). Happy reading! I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
This is the second book in the Everlight Series by Sara Knightly. This book is a great read. I love intrigue and mystery with a little bit of romance woven in and this book does not disappoint on all counts. We pick up at the end of the last book where Ivy has moved into the forbidden Count's castle. She is to be Dr. Ply's assistant. She does not receive a warm welcome at all. Her room is essentially in the basement. An empty room with 20 beds and zero roommates, cold bland meals, and a fireplace that sort of heats up the area. Dr. Ply has her cleaning his office and reading research papers and threatens that if she does not remain loyal to him and only him that he will make life hell for her. She has vowed to figure out what happened to her father by following the clues of his research from his last journal before she figures out a way to escape from the castle until she sees her best friend York is being studied by Dr. Ply. Her mission then becomes how to get York and herself out of the castle. The mysteries that come to light are things I could have never predicted especially when she finds a girl named Ember lying down in the middle of the Tree Ring Circle that she thought only she could enter. Again this book leaves off on a cliff hanger. I am very much looking forward to Book 3, Forest Ever White.
If you're a fan of YA fantasy, add this to your reading list. You. will not regret it. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I was slow at reading this one, content to just read a chapter or two at a time, but when I look back on it, it was one that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Building on the events of the first book, Ivy begins her life in the castle. It's not what she imagined. She's given a large, empty room, filled with unused beds and empty cobwebs. She's restricted to a bland diet, which she learns later that she's expected to earn more palatable food through her research and behavior.
Working with Dr. Ply is difficult. Ivy isn't allowed to ask questions, and any hint that her opinion differs from Dr. Ply's is intolerable. Ivy must learn quickly how to appease him, while also finding out more about the transposers and the mysterious laun they work with.
Ivy is shocked to learn that York is one of the transposers - he's the best one they've seen in awhile. But he's different from the York she knew in Windermere, and Ivy is determined to bring her friend back. When a girl is found mysteriously in the tree garden with no memories besides her name (Ember), Ivy brings her back to the castle.
Soon it becomes a race for Ivy to learn the darker secrets of the castle, especially as Ember's memories begin to come back.
While the fate of the transposers was a little anticlimactic, the promise of the next book was more than enough to keep me interested! I fully intend to follow Ivy and her friends to the end of their story.
I received an ARC through BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
(I received an Advance Review Copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. ARC received via BookSirens.)
Sara Knightly outdid herself with this sequel to Secrets Ever Green. It holds even more questions, mystery and magic than its predecessor, along with an added eerie and unsettling undertone. Her writing is just as gorgeously descriptive, mystic and enthralling as ever, and I found myself completely submerged in life at the castle, so much so that I stayed up until 7:30am to reach the final page!
The pacing of clues appearing and information being revealed was executed perfectly in my eyes, and I didn’t find myself losing interest at any point which is something that I struggle NOT to do - I was thoroughly captivated and enchanted from start to finish.
I enjoyed the Count’s point-of-view chapters dotted throughout the story. Along with Ivy’s POV, they slowly began to weave together to reveal the dark secrets of the castle and the dangers that lurked around every corner. Learning the Count’s reason for his obsession with the carpenters of Windermere brought a whole new understanding to the story.
The twists and revelations that started to come into light (especially during the second half of the story) explained so much but still left enough mystery and questions for the next book to answer.
All in all, I was undeniably impressed with how Knightly continued this series, and I’m already beyond excited for Book Three!
There are times when not reading the previous book makes it a struggle to keep up. To a degree, I felt that when listening to the audiobook of Castle Ever Dark. It wasn't that I couldn't play catchup as Ivy spends a fair bit of time considering the past. Rather, I didn't build an attachment to characters like Ivy.
While the story held elements that usually capture my attention, I didn't find myself whisked away or longing to listen just a little bit longer to see what would happen next. At least not until I was more than halfway through the title.
Maybe it was having not read the first book that presented that stumbling block.
The other thing that may have contributed to my less-than-glowing thoughts about the book - the way Ivy would flip from having an epiphany, yet act as if she never had it. Of course, some could say that is the nature of a teenage girl.
I did enjoy the mystery of what was happening behind closed doors at the castle. Also, the layering of the fantastical (extra abilities) was something I liked.
I'd consider reading the first book now to get the backstory of Ivy and the clues she's been following.
As for the audiobook, Kim Churchill provides a wonderful reading of the story with the emotions of the characters recognizable through her voice.
Thank you to NetGalley and Portal Publishing for the advanced audiobook to review.
If you thought the first book was captivating, prepare to be thoroughly enthralled by the sequel! Picking up seamlessly from where we left Ivy, this installment invites readers to dive deeper into a world filled with mystery, tension, and unexpected alliances within the castle walls. The author has masterfully crafted Ivy’s journey as she grapples with her new circumstances, compelling readers to closely accompany her in deciding who to trust in a beautifully intricate environment. The character development in this book is nothing short of outstanding. Each character shines with their unique personality and distinct motivations, adding rich layers to the unfolding narrative. You can’t help but feel for Ivy as she decodes her father’s clues and embraces new friendships which illustrate the importance of trust and resilience. While many questions from the first book are resolved, the plot cleverly lays the groundwork for even more thrilling mysteries, leaving you eagerly anticipating the next installment. If you’re looking for a story that mixes adventure with genuine emotional depth, this book is a must-read!
While the first book was refreshing, things got way darker in the second book.
I think the author did a really well job writing this book. The characters are added to the book really smoothly and the atmosphere was perfect, keeping me on my toes. You really feel like a part of the castle, not knowing who can be trust, not being sure what's going on, but the ominous feeling is super strong and it makes your heart beat really fast.
I loved that many questions from the first book were answered and finally we know about the secret Ivy's father left for her to decipher. I was a bit shocked how much it really took her (maybe because in my native language ivy is translated to something really close to hedera), but it think it actually highlight how awful she was as an herbalist. However, I have so many new questions, and I can't wait to read the next book.
In conclusion, I feel like this volume was better than the first one, with complex characters that really added to the story, a good pacing (at least for me), a cute love story and a lot of magic.
🌿 I loved being able to return to Ivy's story, continued from Secrets Ever Green, as she navigates a mysterious castle full of dark secrets as she searches for answers about her painful past.
🌹 Ivy Rune is a wonderfully likeable & relatable protagonist, whose sweet nature makes her stand out like a blooming rose against the bleak backdrop of the castle in which she finds herself.
🌿 The side characters in this story are incredibly well rounded, and vividly come to life with their unique personalities and characteristics!
🌿 I loved everything about this cozy, whimsical, cottage-core mystery, and can't wait to read the next book in the series!
🌿 Sara Knightly is hands down one of my new favorite Authors, and would highly recommend her Everlight Series to anyone who loves YA Fantasy Adventures!
I would rate this story 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
♥️🌿 Thank you Sara Knightly & Book Sirens for the honor of being able to read this wonderful book! I received this book as an ARC but all opinions are my own.
Ivy Rune, an orphaned young woman, was raised to fear the Count and his castle. Due to circumstances outside of her control, she is forced to settle into the castle as her new home. She has been summoned to become the assistant to Dr. Ply, the Count’s scientist, a position former held by her recently departed father. No one ever returns home after working in the castle, will she manage to survive? Ivy must learn quickly to navigate her unfamiliar environment and endure the dark, cold, and lifeless castle. Oops, I started with Book #2 in a series. I never (almost never) do this as I am usually disappointed in myself for reading a series out of order; however, this was a pleasant surprise. I was able to understand the characters almost instantly and when someone new was introduced, the backstory was easily woven into the tapestry of the present day. I admire how the author seamlessly immerses you into the world of Ivy Rune without feeling the need to read the book cover to understand the setting. I will be reading the first book and look forward to a third book.
Castle Ever After is book 2 of the Everlight Series is a fantasy story filled with magic, and lots of suspense. The story continues Ivy's story (I have not read book one and felt I was definitely missing something, but I was still able to follow the story) I loved this world, and the story gave lots of unexpected twists. The author does a great job creating a magical world. I can picture the castle and Dark Woods. Discovering the enigmatic Count and Dr. Plye reveals their twisted nature, reminiscent of Dr. Frankenstein. The story captivated me from the start and gripped me until the very end, leaving me eager for the next book. The diverse characters were compelling, making me feel deeply invested in their journeys.
The story's fast pace was captivating. I found myself quickly immersed and delighted by the direction of the narrative. The level of mystery was just right, constantly keeping me on my toes. Overall, it was an exceptionally swift and enjoyable read.
