Between Life and Death #3

Between the Moon & Her Night

Rate this book
“It was like he had lifted the lid to a small locket box, because a soft, beautiful melody began to play—happy and sad, and filled with love and loss.

It was the song of us.

The song of Life and Death.”

Centuries before the events of Between Life and Death and Between Sun and Moon . . . Centuries before she was Sage . . . She was Aurelia, the Goddess of Life.

The decades-long Immortal War has ended and a new deal has been struck between the two warring sides. In exchange for the freedom of others, Aurelia reluctantly agrees to live in the Spirit Realm where she will give her hand in marriage to the God of Death—Von.

The lethal, sexy, immortal claims he will make her his queen, but she knows full well that she will not be wearing a gilded crown upon her head, but rather a tight collar around her neck. Having no intentions of becoming his prisoner, on the day she is supposed to go with him, she makes a swift decision and runs from him instead.

Thunderclouds and swords are not the only things that collide when Von tracks her down in the dark, foreboding woods. There, steamy passions and shadow chains lure Aurelia into making another deal with him—a deal that she won’t be able to run away from this time. A deal that will forever lock her to his side.

. . . Right where Death wants her to be.

Between the Moon and Her Night is a prequel to the Between Life and Death series, but it is intended to be read as the third book. This dark fantasy romance series is great for readers who enjoy Raven Kennedy, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Sarah J. Maas.

Ugh this book was everything I needed and yet I'm somehow still desperate for more?

I also now have the urge to go back and re-read books 1 and 2.

I love how morally grey and delicious Von is. He's so incredibly bad, to everyone except for Sage that is. Their chemistry together is incredible and off the charts.

But the end of this book... I won't spoil but dammit Jaclyn did you have to rip my heart out?!

This book, man. THIS BOOK. All of the feelings were felt, this is an emotional rollercoaster of a novella. If you have read Between Life and Death, and Between Sun and Moon, you will no doubt be as desperate as I have been for more of Sage and Von's story and this DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

I hoped by the time I came to write this review I would have a more concise and less wordy way of saying this but I don't because this story makes me so emotional it gives me word vomit. I love how Jaclyn's writing flows so beautifully from sassy, angry, modern language to beautiful, emotion-filled scenes that literally made me cry over a SINK. IYKYK.

Von's character is literal Death, the King of the Old Gods, the most powerful and deadly being in existence. But the way he KNEELS for Sage. The way he would do anything and everything for her happiness. Again, IYKYK. I'm crying writing this review, the writing is so beautiful, the characters are so thoroughly explored and detailed, it is an excellent story. And you know what doesn't detract from that even the slightest? The use of modern language and colloquial slang. The way that Jaclyn uses her choice of words to bring a brevity and lightness to some really deep, emotional scenes is nothing short of genius. And I usually dislike when authors mix modern language into fantasy books but she does it SO WELL, I can't fault it at all.

Jaclyn, thank you for bringing us this story.

Her writing has improved with every installment and I am really happy about that. However, this book seemed like it took forever because for the first 65% it felt like nothing happened. I will be continuing when the next book releases.

I would like to thank Jaclyn for giving me the opportunity to ARC read this. From page one back in Between Life & Death (book one) I knew this would become a favourite series of mine and spoiler alert: it is.

While this is a prequel I would recommend reading after book two or you will have major spoilers of the series. I loved getting to dive more into Sage and Von’s stories and my personal favourite character: Ezra.

It wouldn’t be a Jaclyn Kot book without her ripping your heart out. You will love this if you are a fan of a morally grey MMC, Gods/Goddesses, enemies to lovers (she can’t stand him at first), and female rage.

I am not okay!!! Sobbing right now! This story is packed with so much love, loss, and healing. I am completely head over heels in love with Von and Sage. Begging you all to read this series right now!!!

Full review:

I’m not sure there are enough words to properly convey how deeply in love with this book I am. “How could something so beautiful hurt so much?” Well, let me tell you!!!!

Between the Moon and Her Night is technically a prequel for Von and Sage, but it absolutely needs to be read third in the series for maximum emotionally gut wrenching impact AND to avoid major spoilers.

This story is a beautiful depiction of trauma, grief, healing, and choice. Feeling loved for who you are, not what others demand you to be. Knowing your worth, and not having to choose between fate and free will.

Don’t worry, there are still plenty of morally grey actions from our dear characters, but the intent behind them is anything but. I loved all the “aha” moments woven through out as we better understand events that took place in the first 2 books. The yin and yang of it all is nothing short of perfection.

Simply put, I dare you not to fall more in love with Von & Sage than you already are!

I cannot wait to continue their story, and hopefully heal my heart in the process!

Leave it to Jaclyn Kot to make a novella hurt this good. This novella that gives insight into Sage and Von's journey before the events of Between Life and Death is bittersweet and heartfelt at every moment.

The characters:
I loved getting to see Von, Sage, and Ezra and others before the meet them in Between Life and Death. It was fun to see how their lives connected in the past and what bonded them together. It doesn't make what life Sage lives -- she is still the sassy, stabby FMC I have come to expect and adore. She never fails to challenge Von and make him rethink his behavior. As for Von -- well, our boy has grown alot when we meet him in BLaD, but this reckless, dark side of him shinning through makes for a fun read.

The plot:
This story FINALLY gives the readers what we have been demanding for two books (damn edging, Jaclyn) and we get some sizzling scenes from it. The stories rely on themes of learning to trust again and free will and choices. The story alludes to much of what is to come, including scheming gods, betrayals, etc. Jaclyn does a nice job of revealing the tensions, connections, and everything in between amongst the characters. It gave interesting insights to how events before Sage and Von meet in BLaD. And some of them hurt even more than you expect them to.

I could see that ending coming like a freight train down the tracks and there was nothing I could do to stop it. It just flew by at full steam, making you wince and hurt at the fallout. BUT also knowing that there is time for a change.

↳ This is book 2.5 of the series. However, it tells the story of what happens before book one, Between Life and Death. Please read this book third as the author intended though. You’ll be doing yourself a huge disservice if you don’t.

Also, there’s a definite trigger in this book that may be huge for some babes. So, please check them.

Now, to the book. Okay, I devoured it. It was so dang good. I can’t get enough of Von and Sage. Yes, she is Sage. I refuse to call her anything different. Period.

I loved seeing how and why she ends up where the story starts. I hate how heartbreaking their story is from the very beginning is though. How freaking sad. Sometimes love is completely unfair, but I can only hope that it’ll be so dang worth it.

This prequel delivers an intense, emotional story that captures the power and complexities of a love as timeless as the characters themselves. Set centuries before the main events of the Between Life and Death series, this follows Aurelia, the Goddess of Life, as she’s swept into an unlikely alliance and marriage with Von, the brooding God of Death. But unlike most unions, there are complex character backgrounds in the aftermath of war to contend with.

Fans of the series are in for a treat, as this book provides much-desired backstory and even more depth to Von and Sage’s relationship. It’s a thrill to see their love from its origins, particularly watching how they grow as individuals and as a couple despite the barriers between them. Kot brilliantly captures the tension and intrigue between Aurelia and Von, making every scene between them a blend of passion and challenge that keeps you rooting for their relationship—even when things get complicated and mistakes are made.

Aurelia shines as a strong, determined character. Von, on the other hand, embodies the intensity you’d expect. His devotion is all-consuming, which adds layers to his role in later books and builds empathy for his character. The two navigate the hurdles of their alliance, and their chemistry creates a pull that’s both raw and romantic, even when it veers toward darker, more conflicted territory.

The writing is lush and layered with dark fantasy vibes, and Kot doesn’t shy away from the grittier side of this godly love story. Readers should be prepared for a bittersweet ending—fitting for a prequel where we already know where the story will eventually lead. That said, the conclusion adds a haunting weight to Von and Sage’s later struggles. It’s a beautiful reminder of their endurance and resilience as characters, whose devotion persists through everything.

Overall, Between the Moon & Her Night is a stunning addition for those who want more insight into the world of Between Life and Death and the bond that unites these unforgettable characters. If you’re already a fan, this book will only deepen your attachment to the series and its love story. My only complaint is that I personally do not like the 'breeding kink' and there's a lot here. But it's worth it.

Thank you to the wonderful author for the opportunity to read and review and complimentary copy. This review is voluntary and all opinions are my own.

This story was so necessary. I absolutely loved reading about the beginning of Sage and Von! The hate to love was done so perfectly, the banter between them was top tier, and the spicy scenes were 🥵 I basically highlighted all of chapter 13 😅.

Honestly Von can still do no wrong in my eyes, he’s the perfect blend of dark and mysterious, with a dash of golden retriever, and a freak in the sheets - it’s so fucking obvious how much he cares for Sage and I absolutely loved seeing that side of him. The true meaning of unconditional love.

Aurelia aka Sage. Her story was so heartbreaking, the abuse she had to endure for such a long time from that dumb turd Aurelius. He didn’t deserve her. Von changed her for the better and honestly I fucking love that for her.

The ending was heart shattering, I couldn’t be more sad for both of them. But I know, hopefully one day ( right Jaclyn….? ) that they will have their HEA ending.

Overall such a great read, I love Jaclyn’s writing it will always be one of my favourites 🤍

This is the best book in the series by far. The author's writing and storytelling have both significantly improved between the first book and now. Lots of drama, action, and suspense that made it really hard to put the book down prior to finishing. I can't wait to get the next book!

I adored this book. The payoff was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it. I loved seeing more of Sage and Von's early relationship and the growth from both characters.

The strength that Sage has is so inspiring especially with everything that has happened to her in the past. Seeing her become her own true self.

Von is the biggest marshmallow to Sage. Seeing everything that he would do and learn for her is adorable and had be kicking my feet, but also he can be so ruthless. A dead sexy combination.

Also the chapter art is perfection! And if you love maps, you're gonna want to check out it out (only in physical copies).

This book annoyed and confused me. The main character Sage died in the last book and this one feels like it begins from before Sage died and in her lifetimes before when she first met Von. While I first enjoyed the fill in, I felt like I was waiting the entire time for her to come back to life. I want Vons adventure on how his love comes back, not an entire missing backstory. God that’s what novellas or half books are for. 60% way thru I gave up and DNF.

Thank you so much to @jaclyn.kot & @rrbooktours for my gifted review copy of 𝘽𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙤𝙤𝙣 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙃𝙚𝙧 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.

This book is EVERYTHING! Between the Moon and Her Night is technically a prequel to the events of the Between Life and Death series, but should definitely be read as the third book in the series to ensure full emotional impact and to avoid spoilers! And let me tell you, this book broke me in the best way. I am INVESTED. I cannot begin to tell you just how much I loved seeing Von and Sage (Aurelia’s) story from the very beginning. It just made so many of the puzzle pieces start to fit together for me. Seeing the events that lead up to everything we have come to know about these two was just amazing. And I absolutely LOVED seeing all the Easter eggs! The world building was beautifully intricate and perfectly described, creating a clear and vivid picture in my mind, and the characters….. for me, this book was all about the characters, their emotions, their journeys, and their dynamics and I ate it up.

I felt all the emotions while reading this book so saying it was an emotional roller coaster is an understatement! It was the perfect blend of romance, fantasy, tragedy, banter, and spiciness. I think I fell even more in love with Von and Sage’s story than I already was. And even though I already knew this, seeing Sage’s story from the beginning made me realize truly just how strong she is. What she went through, everything she had to endure, really puts her journey into perspective. I think Jaclyn did such a great job of portraying the emotions she went through, and then all the feelings and internal struggles she went through as her healing started. And VON! As if I needed anymore reason to love him! This book just solidifies everything I love about Von and made me love him even more!

The ending absolutely sent me and I cannot wait to see what happens next! If you’re a fan of Romantasy and especially Romantasy with darker themes, this series is a MUST!

📋𝐓𝐋𝐃𝐑: Amazingly amazing fantastic emotionally heart-wrenching wonderful beautiful please read this series if you haven’t already!

“All the time that you spent longing for him, I was there, longing for you.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️

Author: Jaclyn Kot
Publisher: Violet Griffin Publishing
Series: Between Life and Death
Release Date: 23rd October, 2024

Perfect if you love:
- Stalker Shadow Daddy
- Forced Bonds
- He Stole Me = He Saved Me
- Fated Mates
- Enemies to Lovers
- Take Your Rival’s Wife
- Lonely, Traumatised FMC

This book provided me with everything I needed and somehow left me so hungry for more. I feel shook, and that’s a true testament to Jaclyn’s writing as I knew the book was a prequel, I knew there was inevitable heartbreak and yet this book left me with tears streaming down my face nevertheless. I’m going to have to go back and read the first two books in the series now, knowing that this book has been so powerful that I know for a fact that I will interpret the first two books in the series and their characters incredibly differently to how I did the first time round. The amount of character context this book has given is insane, in the best kind of way possible.

We start this book centuries before Between Life and Death, and get taken on a journey of how a deal between the Goddess of Life and the God of Death to end an immortal war brings about the foundation of a phenomenal series books. As Aurelia, the Goddess of Life, fights to keep her freedom despite the deal made, even she can’t seem to fight the pull drawing her to Von, the God of Death. The question is when these two immortals collide will sparks fly or will it end in inevitable heartbreak.

I feel like this book filled in the gaps for me especially when it comes to Von, the male is a heathen, but you begin to understand more his motivations within this book and you can see the way that Aurelia changes him and it’s all spicy and adorable and heart wrenching. Reading as Aurelia becomes so very distinctly who she is meant to be while still maintaining a healthy air of mystery around her divinity and mortal traits just left me hungry for more. The connection between these two in the book is sublime and the exploration of the bond between the two of them was incredible. Having said all this, it is not only our two main characters who get an extra dose of development within the book.

Everything and I mean everything works together to form the story that brings us to where we begin the series, it was beautiful. The story was moving from start to end, the plot was gorgeous and had the perfect pace to deliver a moving and passionate tale. I can’t actually begin to describe the satisfaction of everything falling into place as this tale went on.

Thank you so much Jaclyn, I didn’t realise it but I needed this book, it is very simply stunning!

‘He brought his lips to mine, whispering against them, “You are the light to my darkness. The moon to my night. I love you, Little Goddess”.’

Where do I begin? This book was fantastic and I couldn’t put it down. It was so wholesome yet filled with drama and suspense and pain and anguish. The love story was so heartfelt and beautiful to watch play out. Jaclyn Kot is a great writer, and I felt such a strong connection to the main characters. Though it’s a fantasy, this didn’t stop me feeling the emotions and pain of the characters on such a real level, and it really helps bring this story to life. There are potential big triggers in this book, and while they are handled delicately, just make sure you check the TWs before reading.

This book is 2.5 in the series, and while it is set as a prequel, it is intended to be read as the third in the series. I decided in the end to read this as number 1, because I wanted to give a review from that perspective in case other readers wanted to pick this one up first as well. Honestly, this book could read as a standalone if you weren’t invested in finishing the rest of the series. Everything is well explained, and the book is fantastic on its own. I was absolutely invested in finishing the rest, because this book was such an amazing read. While I would recommend reading books 1 and 2 first, you can absolutely start with this and it won’t detract from the series, but it will provide some huge spoilers and might set you up a little differently to read the rest if you don’t go in with an open mind. I will say though, because I first read this prior to the other 2 books, the ending crushed me, so be prepared for that 😅

The romance is great in this book. Slow burn, one-sided enemies to lovers, he falls first (and hard). There is a little bit of spice but it’s more on the closed door side of things, maybe 🌶️🌶️.5 ish on the scale of things? I enjoyed that, because it alludes to the passion of the relationship but really allows the plot to develop and take the main stage instead. Kudos to Jaclyn for this incredible novel, because I cannot get enough, and I have since devoured books 1 and 2 after reading this.

I received an ARC of this book and am leaving this review voluntarily.

✨Between the Moon & Her Night✨

Well goodness gracious, Jac, just break me apart why don’t you! And I knew you would and it still didn’t make it hurt less! But man, was it oh so beautiful and September seriously cannot come soon enough!

BTMAHN is book 2.5 in Jaclyn’s Between Life & Death series. It is smaller in page number than the other two but absolutely NO LESS packs a punch. It’s a dual first person POV sensation that takes us through how Sage and Von initially met, what brought them together, what they faced, fought for/against, and ultimately sacrificed. It is divine, aching, yearning, agonizing, precious, and a painful. But if you’ve read books 1&2, then you know that, while the chaos reigns, there is still SO MUCH to hope for. AND we finally get that spicy spice Jaclyn’s only given us teases of and trust me, IT IS GOOD and worth the wait.

I thoroughly enjoyed this prequel so very much- even though I knew it was gonna hurt. I am so invested in not only Sage and Von, but also their found family. I ache for redemption after this ending and to see the blessing that was stolen from them returned. This story has continued to grow on me, improve, entertain, swoon, and make me smile. Jaclyn’s work just keeps getting better and better.

Tropes you may find in BTMAHN are forced proximity, marriage deal, tattoo bargains (intentionally placed 😉), winged shadow daddy, revelations we’ve been seeking, medium spice (maybe medium high but i truly felt it was so well balanced), touch her and ☠️, bonds, mind speaking, “good girl”, 🔥 the world for her, one bed, wound tending & comfort, and soft but strong FMC.

Books 1, 2, and 2.5 are out NOW and on KU! Get started today!!

If you’re a fan of Hades x Persephone vibes, healing heroines, possessive and morally black Shadow Daddies, you need this series in your life!

Transportive and evocative, Between the Moon and Her Night crafts a rich tapestry layering devastating revelations, betrayal, loss, and a love story spanning millennia.

ARC Review
I had the pleasure of receiving an ARC for Between the Moon and Her Night, and it did not disappoint. I've read the first two books a few times now, and I really like the world and characters. This book follows Aurelia (Sage) prior the the first book when she was a goddess (basically a prequel to the first book). There are obvious parallels between Hades and Persephone and Von and Sage in this series, but I think it's most obvious in this book in an almost traditional sense. There were parts where I thought Von was not a good guy here, and I did want Sage to have freedom for the first time and make her own decisions, but I still wanted him and Sage to be happy together. There were also hints to further world building that I hope gets explored soon in other books. I got the sense that the author thought of this book as a book 2.5 out of the series, which makes sense. I usually skip books 2.5 in a series but I think this one is pretty essential and it was just a good read overall. Very excited to see where the series goes from here!

I absolutely adore Von and Sage’s love story. I’m so glad we get to see it unravel from the beginning in this books

Not only is their relationship beautiful and tragic, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing more of the world and noticing more puzzle pieces falling into place. That’s one of the things I love about Jaclyn’s writing, seeing the easter eggs planted in book 1 play out in the other books.

BLAD will forever be one of my favourite series, and BTMAHN was a great addition. I can’t wait to read more!

My heart has been ripped from my body.

I wasn't expecting this book to break me as much as it did, but the story of Sage and Von is something that I needed. Everything makes more sense about Von and his actions, and instead of just having to trust his POV, it is easier to see how he got to where he was at the end of book two.

I thought I was going to be okay after the heartbreak of book two, but no, nothing could prepare me for the paragraph warning we got from Jaclyn in this, and the following agonizing pages. It's been four days since I finished this book, and I cannot stop thinking about it. About the entire series that has been released so far.

Book four cannot come sooner.

WOW!! Cudos to Jacklyn for another amazing book! Keeping as spoiler free as possible. I was lucky enough to get this as an arc and although I tried to drag it out I finished it in 3 days 😅

We get the backstory of Von and Sage’s story in this one and it was fabulously written. Von is still his villainous self, which I’m here for, but it was satisfying seeing all the growth his character has while being relentlessly, hopelessly, possessively in love with Sage.

Big high five for the domestic violence awareness in this series but especially this book! I loved how strong Sage is and how empowered she becomes and how it’s shown that having just one female friend to confide in can make all the difference to someone’s healing journey.

We got a lot more Easter eggs about Von and Sage, super stoked to see where that goes, so many questions answered but now I have new ones lol! All in all it was a great read, all the emotions, lots of spice, female choice, it was spectacular! 💜

Loved this book and it almost made up for the second book having way, way, WAY too much Aurelius in it, inclusing spice with Aurelius (yuck).

Von was everything and so was Sage. The end is heartbreaking and I need to know what happend to Nicholas. Being a piece of shit runs in his family it seems.

Now I need the final book of Sage and Von‘s story immediately!

Ugh I love this series so much!! This gave a whole new side to Sage and Von’s relationship, a side that I desperately wanted to see. In the first two books, there were moments from Sage and Von’s past that I was confused about, and this cleared up EVERYTHING!!! It’s a must-read!!!!
