The Boy The Monsters Made

Rate this book
GRIFFIN THOUGHT THE MONSTERS ONLY LIVED IN HIS HEAD.
He was fine with that. In fact, it was far more preferable than his father sitting him down to talk about the regular visits from the things that go bump in the night and hearing him say “yeah bud, I see them too.”

The delicate fabric weaving Griffin’s sense of normalcy unravels when his best friend, Jude, is called upon to do the work of a fractured relic for apathetic gods: The Reapers.

SENTINEL WILLIAM “MOZ” MOSLEY is demon-host turned renowned demon-hunter, labelled a madman for storming from his wife’s sham funeral. His family are the only ones who believe she’s still alive until a flame from his past is drawn out to join the search. The thin line between the horrors of monsters and the evils of man is a visible distinction to them. Until the bodies begin to appear.

A string of grisly murders plague the restless capitol city, leaving both the Royal Sentry and Brightloch Police Department scrambling to solve them first. Haunted by visions of faces that shortly after turn up in the macabre crime scenes, Griffin knows that he owes it to the victims to find their killers. With a suspect list that includes an ancient demon of the crossroads and a band of Oracles gone rogue, Griffin and his family find themselves way in over their heads.

Read as a beta reader. Another amazing addition to the Reaperverse. Graves flawlessly deepens our understanding of well-loved characters while introducing new favorites. A seamless blend of dark fantasy, mystery/thriller, and romance that build on Graves’ themes of found family and queer relationships. Explores experiences of living with Schizoaffective disorders and how individuals and their support systems navigate symptoms while dispelling common misconceptions. As with their other works, Graves immerses the reader deeply in what the characters are feeling. Their grief feels like your grief. Their love feels as if it’s ripping you apart from the inside. I wish I could experience this book for the first time again and again.

Graves’ sequel to the Shintori Chronicles is nothing short of a literary masterpiece. I had the pleasure of both beta and ARC reading The Boy the Monsters Made and when I say pleasure, I mean pleasure. I am deeply in love with the entire original series but do believe that this is Graves’ best work yet.

The story follows the son of two of the main characters of the original series as the gang tries to unravel a devastating mystery. This is a book that constantly left me on the edge of my seat, frothing at the mouth waiting to see what would happen next. It’s spooky, emotional, and just a little bit spicy.

William “Moz” Mosbey has been the love of my life since I got to meet him in Aegis and getting to see him later in life as a father and husband was an absolute delight. His POVs made me wail very regularly. And his son, Griffin, was a character I came to love very quickly. Sharing the same sort of dark and snarky humor as his parents, a quick wit, and admirable strength, he was a character that I came to root for quickly.

Aside from a fascinating world, and well-fleshed out and extremely loveable characters, Graves’ writing is absolutely phenomenal. The realistic character dialogue paired with beautiful prose? I was sold instantly. Another really important note is the representation throughout the story. Graves has never, from what I’ve seen, shied away from topics that most other writers do, but the depiction of schizoaffective disorder (and how Moz treats it!) in Griffin was such a breath of fresh air. Uncomfortable at times in a way that was so genuine and real.

This is not a book you want to miss, and I am standing outside of Costco waiting extremely impatiently for the next one.
