The author examines how pleasure has been managed from the middle ages to the present day, and examines the differences in leisure and travel opportunities for men and women. Rojek situates leisure and travel in the context of the debate on modernity and postmodernity, and uses examples drawn from Europe and North America to produce a dazzling analysis of the experience and ideology of escape in Western society.

Chris Rojek is Professor of Sociology and Culture at Nottingham Trent University, UK.
In 2003 he was awarded the Allen V. Sapora Award for outstanding achievement in the field of Leisure Studies.
