Those Snake Island Kids

Rate this book
When Jake persuades his family to embark on a sailing-camping holiday on a small Tasmania island, he is mostly interested in pirate fantasies and his home-built sailing dinghy. But he does not plan on events which are to leave him isolated with his brother and sister, and a couple of Kiwi kids. Ultimately, after being forced to dig deep into their personal reserves, the treasures they all gain are very different from the ones Jake has set out to find.

An uplifting tale of youthful naivety, camaraderie, calamity and courage which will appeal to any free spirit in the nine to ninety-nine readership bracket.

An unashamedly Ransome genre illustrated book, brought into the 21st Century by an accomplished writer who writes of the lifestyle of his own five sons - brought up aboard a traditional ketch sailing the South Seas.

It seems that the writers who read Arthur Ransome's 12 stories as children are now writing modern stories within Ransome's world view. This book fits well in this trend.
However, don't read this for that reason. Read it because it's a good story, well plotted, with characters, both adult and young, drawn from reality, set in the magical landscape of Southern Tasmania and dealing with the same themes of responsibility, authority, risk-taking and common sense that Ransome explored.
If you are a Ransome fan, identifying the inspirations and parallels is fun. Just like reading Alexander Kent or Julian Stockwin as a C S Forrester fan.

Review
This week I had the pleasure of meeting Jon, when he visited the store to introduce me to his series - Those Kids. Its very rare to find good quality New Zealand adventure stories. Jon very kindly supplied me with a reading copy and I soon reading about camping, fishing and exploring.

This would be great for reluctant readers, I loved that these children had a social conscious and were passionate about there environment. This series would be great in schools and is one I'd recommend highly.
