The story is part of the Range War Women series and each story will read as a stand-alone. The stories revolve around issues with greedy men and range wars. Basil Dudman uses vigilantes to take over the Shelby area in Colorado territory. With several gold mines being located, it means more miners in the area. He has already bought up many of the businesses and run off homesteaders in the outline areas. This story isn’t a range war with large ranches wanting other people’s land—instead, it is one man wanting to own everything, no matter the cost to have more control.
The story begins in Cheyenne, Wyoming in the 1870s where Blake Langdon, bounty hunter, has handed over an escapee and needs to be paid so he can move on to the next job. What a shock to see an old friend, Matt Bryson, from when they both served in the war. The exchange over a meal comes with a request from Matt to Blake—locate the sister of a fallen soldier and return some of his mementos.
“We think, by a process of elimination, they might belong to Private Samuel Billings. He was only eighteen and unmarried but did have a sister named Ebony. We have eventually tracked down a woman who we think is her. She lives in the small hamlet of Shelby a few miles from Pikes Peak and is married to a man by the name of Evan Gillies, probably why we had such trouble locating her.”
The story will move to Shelby, Colorado where Blake needs to locate Ebony. What he witnesses in the town is unsettling. He is here to do a job, return the possessions of a fallen soldier over to his next of kin. The town of Shelby is being controlled by a man who has instilled fear in many of its citizens. Blake plans to do this act of kindness and then move on to locate his next bounty. Witnessing a man threatening a child doesn’t sit right with Blake. What a surprise to learn that the young boy is the son of the woman he has come to see.
The story has the good, the bad, and the evil of people. Blake is a loner, and he likes it that way. He is on the go, going from location to location as a bounty hunter. Meeting Ebony and Sam brings uneasy feelings—he wants to protect them, but he has nothing to offer them because of his work. The weather will play a factor in this story—and with Christmas so close, Blake will find himself staying a little longer.
“Money, greed, and corruption always went hand in hand, in his experience.”
I liked the characters and while Blake keeps telling Ebony he isn’t a man to settle down, the way he starts feeling about her and Sam, tells a different story. The story does have moments of life and death danger, and of three people being together and wanting more. Will Blake and Ebony find a way to happiness? Is there more for Blake than being a bounty hunter without ever settling down? Both have things in their past that have jaded them, but in time, they find they have more of a future together—as a family.
“Don’t look back. Look forward with hope for the future.”
But Ebony knows better than most just how hard it is to escape the past and keep looking forward. Especially when the past still over shadows the present. Blake agrees to do a good deed for a fallen comrade and finds everything he never knew he wanted! He goes from being adamant he doesn't want a wife or family, to being curious and intrigued, before realising just how much he craves the time spent with Ebony and Sam. I love how at ease and genuine he is with Sam, his protective instincts go into overdrive as both Sam and Ebony steal his heart. Sam is definitely my favourite character, he is so innocent and sweet most of the time, yet is also thoughtful, compassionate and works hard to contribute to the family. In short this is a lovely, heartwarming read packed with hope and love. I read this on Kindle Unlimited.
Well Margaret Tanner has done a wonderful job in writing this book. It is such a nice read that can be read in a evening. A bounty hunter looking for a better life, A widower is looking for help, A boy looking for Santa Claus. What do they fined something they were not looking for. Love. This was a very enjoyable read.
Blake was a confirmed bachelor. No wife would ever tie him down, as he was a free spirit. Then he met the beautiful Ebony and her son Sam, who was so adorably sweet. Blake was adamant that he would never marry, which broke Ebony’s heart. However, when the danger she had been facing intensified, Blake realized he needed to protect this little family.
I enjoyed the book! Blake was a bounty hunter that came to return some items from Ebony’s deceased brother to her. Before he could return them, he met her son Sam who asked him to help find Santa Claus. When Blake met Ebony, he discovered some vigilantes were trying to run her off her ranch. This is a clean wholesome book that is an easy read. I recommend reading this book!
A bounty hunter named Blake and a widow named Ebony makes a good story. Throw in Ebony's son Sam and you have a wonderful story filled with lots of excitement. Margaret Tanner always delivers a story that keeps you up late finishing the book.
