Q&A with Milly Silver
Q: How would you describe INTO THE DARK SERIES #1-4? M: I'd say the story is an exciting blend of part paranormal romance, part action adventure. There's a little bit of humour thrown in as well. A mix of the romance from The Twilight Saga with the action from The Hunger Games Trilogy.
Q: How does the INTO THE DARK SERIES differ from your other stories? M: Emily's is a dark coming of age story, exploring identity, being gifted, first love, friendships and loyalty. My next book HOTTER THAN HOT due for release 2013, is more light entertainment and laugh out loud. ;-))
Q: What inspired you to write the INTO THE DARK story? M: I was really interested in exploring states of consciousness, and how different people outside the mainstream have different gifts that make them unique. I love a good romance (who doesn't?!), so that was a crucial element for me. So I wrote a story that I wanted to read!
Q: Your work has been described as cinematic. Why? M: I'm passionate about film and am very visual, so that's how I think and write. I see what my characters look like, how a scene looks, and it all flows from there.
Q: You mentioned The Hunger Games Trilogy and The Twilight Saga. How is INTO THE DARK similar? M: INTO THE DARK has the action adventure element similar to The Hunger Games, combined with the paranormal romance element similar to The Twilight Saga. Fans of those two stories will love the INTO THE DARK SERIES.
The epic, explosive conclusion to an outstanding YA Paranormal/ romance, which has nestled itself within my heart never to be removed!
WOW…I absolutely loved this distinctly original, exciting, fresh new 4-part series that combined fast-paced, thrilling action with a tender teenage romance in an extraordinary world. Refreshingly original, inspired and magical this captivating tale was utterly enchanting from beginning to end hence I highly commend Milly Silver. Character-driven and action-packed, this story contains such realism as to make you feel a part of the saga and able to connect with each individual character. I was captivated by the cleverly crafted narrative told with a distinctive voice, which professes the author’s singular and identifiable style. Delicately interwoven and rich sublime simplicity, make this multi-layered magnificent tale one that really stands-out as something greatly consequential and significant within a competitive genre.
(Quote) “There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception” – Aldous Huxley, author and Oxfor Alumus.
As the truth is disclosed to Emily, I was sat on the edge of my seat reading in a feverish frenzy eager to discover the conclusion to this spectacular story. The heated argument between the hero and heroine within the tale added to the dramatic unexpectedness of this thrilling tale, which had so many twists and turns as to constantly surprise you! I also found the young girl to be a most intriguing character, who together with the psychological workings within the G&T club made this a most unusual creation. As they went to sleep to be transported to other worlds, I was reminded of blockbuster film “Avatar” where all is not as it seems; wherein reality and dreaming collide in one phenomenal experience.
Unable to put this book down the hypnotic, ingrained love triangle between Ben and Henry which is pierced repeatedly by Seb’s standoffish, disapproving manner does at times unsettle Emily’s deep connection with Henry and at times ‘trust’ is questioned. I was overjoyed at how they were both steadfast and that the saying ‘true love rules supreme’ was relevant, akin to Lauren Kate’s Fallen series or Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga. Breathtaking complexity and stunningly beautiful, I am SO overcome by this AMAZING story as it was so profoundly moving and affecting. Heartrending and touching, often poignant and truth-drawing this book speaks to the heat with such honesty.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking the author for letting me have the opportunity to read her work. I would highly recommend this and cannot praise it nor enthuse about it enough – WOW!!
*I was sent an e-copy of “Into the Dark” series, part 4 from the author to read and review*
I was given a copy of this 4-part series in exchange for an honest review.
This series is fast-paced and includes action, adventure, YA romance, paranormal, and suspense. I enjoyed all of the characters (even the one I wanted to hate), and watching them and their relationships develop as the story progressed.
The plot was interesting and unique. Emily has a unique talent required by the exclusive G&T (Gifted & Talented) group. Conflicts arise as she discovers the secrets that have been kept from her. Will she be strong enough to overcome her own insecurities (and also heartache) to do what she must to save her loved ones?
Once started, it was hard to stop reading, as there always seemed to be just one more revelation, just a few more pages away... that would satisfy my curiosity, or get the characters out of danger, or provide the answer to if this could possibly be a HEA ending.
In this final episode. Emily is now a fully integrated member of the elite GT's. her relationship with Henry has its ups and downs. We finally get to meet the Logician. Emily's best friend Ben makes a welcome reappearance. A lot happens in this last part of the story, suffice to say it all culminates in an nail biting finish. Of course those nasty misery makers feature heavily.
Having now read all four parts to the story, I really enjoyed them. Well written with interesting characters and plenty of excitement and adventure. I had hoped to discover more about Emily's parents. I also wondered if Ben had deeper feelings for Emily, more than just friends. But this is a very good series for YA.
Recently I was given the opportunity to get my hands on Into the Dark Volumes 1-4 for FREE in return for my honest review. While I came across the opportunity through the Never Too Old For Y.A. Books Group on Goodreads. However, I received the volumes directly from the author herself.
When I started reading this book, I didn't bother to go back and read the description and I didn't remember exactly what it was about, only that the description sounded interesting when I signed up for the Read 4 Review. Let me say this straight off MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL FOUR VOLUMES BEFORE YOU START READING!!!
Volume 4: Overall, I liked the final installment in the series. I did feel that the whole fight with Henry was very contrived. I think a little more creativity could have been used to get us where the author was trying to go. I was surprised to find out who the Logician really was. I wasn't expecting it to be the person it was.
My Thoughts on the Series as a Whole: I felt this was a very good book. I do wish the author would combine all four volumes into ONE ebook that people could purchase though. It is a very quick and engrossing read. If you do pick it up, you might want to try to have enough time to read it all in one sitting. It is a hard one to put down. The book is written by a British author, so you do have all of the British spellings, like colour, favourite, realise, etc...I find myself reading the British versions slightly different in my head, but it's not too distracting from reading the story.
I thought Volume 3 was definitely the most exciting. I was surprised about who The Logician really was.
THIS happens, just like the author said it would: "The only three people in the world who I truly loved were my best friend, Ben, my Uncle Spencer and his fiancee, Irene. I am now grateful for what I didn't know on that sunny afternoon. One of them would soon be lost to me. The other two, I was destined to kill without hesitation or remorse. It wasn't premeditated. It was what needed to be done. So I did it."
I like how the book didn't have a love triangle like almost every other YA book. Although, at the very end, it seems like it was opened up for one. You do end up with a nice conclusion, even though the story is left open enough for a sequel. I would recommend this book to others and definitely enjoyed reading it.
In the fourth and final installment of this book Emily is working on improving her skills so that she and the G&T are able to rescue Irene. As Emily comes to understand the program she finally begins to question Henry's intentions and the role she might play in this rescue.
Will Emily fail at her one and only chance of saving Irene?
I have to say that I liked this installment better than the rest. I figured out that Emily can be a likeable character when she isn't with Henry or when she's angry. Ben is finally back in this final installment and I have to say that I enjoyed him being back. I found that all the characters were a little better in this part. I liked Ben and Mark the most. Mostly because Emily isn't weak around them and they don't act like a lovesick puppy around her.
(INTO THE DARK AS A WHOLE)
First let me stress that this book was a R&R and was give to me by the author for a honest review.
So as a whole this book wouldn't be one that I would reread. I found it to be a struggle to get through the second and third installment. If I had to rate the book as a whole it would be a 2.5 star rating. The premise to the story was what caught my attention and held onto it. Curiosity to what was going on is what pushed me to read on.
The main characters, Emily and Henry, were to me very childish and had no depth what so ever. They acted like lovesick children ad that made this series so hard to read. This is the first book I've ever read where I didn't want the main characters together. I actually liked the guy in the alternate universe and wished the author went that route with the romance aspect. I would have liked more details about the alternate universe and the Misery Makers.
It was saddening because with a synopsis like the one posted you have so many high hopes for this book. I think that alone is what frustrates me about this. Good premise. Terrible execution. If the author were to pull this, work on the structure and development of the characters, do some extensive editing, and make it one whole book I believe this can be a great re-release.
So sadly, I wouldn't recommend this. For younger readers this might be a great read but to the older ones this might be a struggle.
Ok this is my favorite volume of this series. This one was action-packed, it answered all questions and left no major questions unanswered. This volume was the best developed and the most interesting part of the whole book. I thought that it was a great ending and I loved that it was a very happy and upbeat ending after all the horror and terror.
I loved how Emily finally pulls her own weight in the parallel universe. I love that we finally get to see what she is truly made of. She is strong-willed, independent and doesn't take shit from anyone. I did think her hate of Seb made no sense it wasn't his fault she didn't know. There were parts about her character I didn't like but everyone has flaws. All of the characters were well developed and you have to have all of them to make this story. They each have an important role in this story even the small characters. They were all intertwined and I loved how they all had different and sometimes extreme personalities. It made reading the book more fun and interesting.
I also very much liked the mental aspect of this story. I loved how it was sci-fi enough to be fascinating this surprised me because I don't usually like sci-fi. But this was a great read. Also I loved the parallel universes and the different places she end up every time she blacks-out. Overall a great read. I recommend it.
*Author gave me this series for free in exchange for an honest review.*
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Milly Silver thank you for giving me a copy of all four books. Overall I gave Volumes 1-4 a 4.5 rating.
I loved the final volume. The story was original, fascinating and unfolded at a good pace. Each part kept me wanting to read more. There is action, love, romance, friendship, and sacrifice! Would I read this story again? Of course! Emily now apart of the G&T Team focuses on freeing Irene with the help of the team, her uncle Spencer, and Ben. When part 4 begins, there is a minor bump in Henry's and Emily's relationship, I was thinking oh gosh, set them up with sweet perfect romance, just to have him be a complete asshole, but that isn't the case! I'm glad I read on. I love the way it ended! And finding out who the Logician was, was a complete twist! I never would have guessed this particular character. Seb turns out to be decent after all, and Emily gets her happy ending. I'm also very intrigued with how Emily started blacking out at 13, perhaps there should have been more background information, or maybe one day Milly will grace us with another book about Emily Baxter! I would definitely recommend others to read.
I was gifted this book by the author Milly Silver in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book, from the start it had me hooked. I liked that this was something different from anything I had read. I was intrigued to see what/where the story would take me in regards to Emily's seizures. The pace and description of the characters and places was just right. I loved Henry. I loved Emily's view point of Oxford, I can imagine it is just like that, between the difference of classes.
I read all 4 books in one sitting. The only critique I have is that I would of liked a bit more description on the misery makers. I loved you were kept hanging for the next bit of what would happen when Emily next had a seizure. The sudden appearance of the boy when she had a seizure and his constant appearance afterwards kept me guessing. The Guessing of who the Logician could be was constant and not who I thought it was going to be. I thought the way it all came together at the end with Emily's uncle and Irene and all the G&T going in together was great it had me on the edge of my seat. I would definitely recommend this book to everyone

Into the dark was my first R4R experience, aslo known as Read for Review, so first of all i would like to thank Milly Silver for giving me this opportunity of reviewing her book. The author is from UK and it was quite noticeable for me since i'm so used to american authors, it actually was very refreshing. The story is of Emily, who thinks of herself as an average girl who just started her first year of college. But Emily have a secret. After years of being homeschooled she is very excited to have chance at normal life and she have no idea that her secret will turn her life upside down and she will get much more than she was hoping for. This book has everything you can hope to find in a good fantasy: mystery, secrets, romance, adventure, even some real action. Characters are very easygoing and brave, especially when life throwing at them one challenge after another. Romance part was my favorite and swoon worthy, especially first kiss. :-) Generally, I liked this book, although in some parts it seemed lacking details and descriptions, but I still recommend it to all romantic fantasy fans.
I was given this whole series in exchange for an honest review. At first I thought this was just another scifi wanna be story. But now I want to go back and buy this series so this author can get the credit she deserves. It had a great pace, the plot was amazing, and the characters, yea I loved all of them. Emily and Ben, their friendship is unbreakable and it really makes you either think about that friend you have that closeness with or you just wished you had one. Then there's the G&T group that you find in every school there is. The emotional setting here is a whole different level. One minute you are all in love the next to want to claw someone's eyes out. This review will be posted for all for series because each story/series is great. They are totally epic. If you are looking for a book the is a constant pace, full of mystery, adventure, true love, friendship, loyalty to friends and family then her you have it. This is the longest review I've ever given without spoilers. Buy this book. You will not be sorry you did.
What a fantastic ending!! With such a wonderful set of books ahead of it, this book is the final pillar in Emily's story, promising a fantastic close, and it doesn't disappoint.
The writing is absolutely superb, as with the previous 3 volumes. Well balanced, with the perfect mix of suspense and humor, the story stays fast paced and exciting.
With all the mysteries solved and questions answered, this book gives the perfect closure to this epic story. The twists and surprises are wonderful, and the ending is completely perfect- I couldn't have pictured it any better.
This is a fantastic adventure, and is a series that should be on any YA fan's shelf.
*I was given a complimentary ebook copy of this book, by the author, to read in exchange for an honest review.
Just finished installment 4 of the series and it was very action packed! I am not going to give anything away in this book but know it is well worth the read! It has a very catching beginning, a thrilling middle, and a very warm and happy ending! The only thing I had an issue with was the explanation of who the little girl was... I guess I didn't grasp onto that explanation. In this part of the book I really felt better for Emily because she had way more control of her life and how things went for her than in the other 3 parts. YAY for Emily! She was finally able to take control and make decisions and have some sort of knowledge as to what the outcome could be, which to me was great. The author does a great job plunging into the alternate universe and then bringing us out again in this excellent conclusion to this book! Glad that I read it!
I got this book as a read for review. Thanks to the author for this opportunity! I was skeptical and didn't think I'd like this book since I usually don't care for books released in parts. I really enjoyed it though! It was fast paced and action packed! It was different from what I usually read. It was a nice change though! I really liked Seb! I would've loved to have more explanation on Mattie. I get that she was just a coping mechanism for Emily, but did she ever see her again? What happens to the misery makers, does that world still exist? This book would be perfect for older teens!
okay so this is the final installment for now and wow....the ending to this was great. she left it open for.more or it.could just be done with the 4 parts. yes this was a love story but not your usual love story. Emily and Henry are brought together for reason I won't say due to spoilers but they seem to.have a perfect relationship bit like every other relationship they are tested I really loved this series and would love to have more.from the team ;)
I enjoyed reading part 4. The whole series should be one stand alone book. I actually get turned off from reading series books. I believe more people would read this series as a stand alone. I wouldn't compare the series to Hunger Games or Twilight. It's a different series altogether and I did enjoy it and would read again.
The Logician was not who I thought it would be. I loved the ending.
I still want to know who the Misery Makers are!!!!
Part #4 is definitely my favorite part.We spend a lot of time on the subconscious level. There's lots of action, a shocking decision, darker atmosphere. I liked Emily as a character from the beginning, and in this final part she shows just what she's capable of and how strong she is from the inside.
I loved this last book! I'm so glad how it finished. Milly Silver knows how to write an awesome book filled with twist and turns that has kept me glued. I can't wait to read more from her! If you haven't read this series you should.
WOW!! This book was fantastic! Lots of Acton. Lots of emotion. The ending was abrupt but was nice to have the little tease of what happened later. I would love more Emily and Henry. I think there is way more to there store and the G&T. More Please! !
*I DO NOT RECAP THE BOOKS IN MY REVIEWS, THAT IS WHAT THE BOOK DESCRIPTION IS FOR. NOR DO I HAVE SPOILERS*
An overall series review will be available on my blog, http://abitchandabook.blogspot.com/. This review is for the fourth book of the series. This book was provided for me free of cost by the author for an honest review. Thank you Milly Silver, I appreciate all the hard work you put into this book series and for giving me the opportunity to read and review it for you.
Overall Rating [image error] I just finished fourth book, which completes the series. With true form for a successful series, I felt that the books got better with each one. I felt that the fourth book was the best book in the series. Looking back on everything, I have to say that I did enjoy the series in its entirety. While the first books lacked a little bit of the usual luster I prefer, the ending delivers a satisfying finality.
Originality/Creativity: [image error] As I stated in the previous book reviews of this series, the idea of having two different worlds combined into the story makes for a creative read. This last book in the series unravels the most secrets and so it contains the most complexity of all the other books. You finally understand the role each character has played in Emily’s life and most of the answers come together for you. I still had many more questions that needed answers, but I think that is just because I tend to crave more details when it comes to “other worlds” because I like to have a clear picture in my mind of the setting because I have a vivid imagination.
Complexity of Characters/Storyline: [image error] In the other two books, I decided that the two main characters, Emily and Henry, were the most complicated. In the final book, you realize that every character around Emily has played a critical role in her life to help her and have been around for quite some time. The complexity of the characters multiplies by tenfold in this book, giving it a much more interesting read.
Quality of writing: [image error] This book is written in “British-English” which means that common spelling we use in the United States is a bit different. There is just the slight variation in spellings such as “favourite” instead of “favorite.” British-English is commonly found in the British Isles, Australia, Canada, etc. Not a big deal to me, I am used to reading books like this so it does not distract me in the least. It fits perfectly with the setting of where the story takes place. Some less literate Americans might have an issue reading this which I find to be hilarious.
Action/Suspense: [image error] I am an action junkie so the best way to keep me extremely happy is to have non-stop action. This book has the most action of all the other books in the series. I appreciated that heavily. I felt that the author should have had Emily spend more time in the parallel universes, because that was the only place where there was any real action. In this last book, the very last trip into the parallel universe was more drawn out then the other books, which was delightful! I was actually on edge for a few moments so my crave for action was finally satisfied in this last book.
Would I recommend this book? Sure. I would say that each book in the series takes about an hour or so to read which is not a big time commitment. I feel like the fourth book has been the best so far in the series.
Would I recommend the series? Yes, under certain conditions. You have to be a patient reader. I felt that the first two books were not nearly as interesting as the final two books and because of that, a lot of people may lose interest. However, I consider myself to be a dedicated reader so I seldom abandon books before I finish them or the series. If I don't finish a book, they means that it must have really sucked rotten eggs, this series does not fall in that category though!
I absolutely loved this series! I mean jeez, when I started I really didn't know what to expect. The blurb says hunger games meets twilight which in my book is a bestseller. I just never really expected to love it this much! I also had never read one of the installment series. The thought of it kills me because I would hate to read 60 pages and then have to wait for months, plus nothing gets resolved in the first 3 books so you are just reading a portion of a story. It may be better to have multiple story threads one for each book that can be completed in that book. That's how I feel an installment series should go. This is fine the way it is, the way to make it perfect would be to combine it into one book or release it as a set. I am going to treat it as one book. Sorry about the rambling, this book is amazing! The plot is so great I never saw any of it coming, at all. All my theories were wrong! Which is rare, but I loved it. I get tired of predictable books. The books get better as you progress in the story. There are very minimal spelling and grammatical errors, I noticed a few places where there was a dropped word. British English has different spelling so just laugh at how we as Americans have butchered the English language while you read this. The best addition to this series is her seizure watch dog! I love how Seb interacted with the dog and how she became part of the G&T crew. My biggest problem with the books is the lack of character development in Henry and in the secondary characters. Henry is amazing and I still love him but we still don't know too much about him. Just generic facts. And his character doesn't grow in the books. Plus he makes a huge mistake at the end and Emily just forgets about it basically. Another character that got to me was Will, we do not learn anything about him or his motives behind what he does. The other characters don't get too much time in the spotlight either. I would adjust that, make the books longer and then they aren't novellas but complete novels in a more fleshed out series. Needless to say I still love this series and the authors fantastic writing ability. My heart stopped on a number of occasions and she had me on the edge of my seat gasping at parts. I highly recommend this series! And the way she ended it, you feel good about it, there could easily be another book!
(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on aread-to-review basis. Thanks to author Molly Silver.) This is part 4 in the ‘In The Dark’ serial, and picks up where part 3 left off. It’s crunch time now, and it’s finally time to try and rescue Irene from the other dimension in which she’s been stuck for the past three and a half years. Can Emily make it though? Can Irene be saved? And what is in store for Emily and Henry’s relationship?
I’ve had mixed feelings about this series, and I have to say that if I hadn’t received all 4 of these books to review, I highly doubt I would have read more than book 1.
Emily and Henry are pretty loved up, so when Emily accuses him of only liking her for her worth to the team, and then running of to London to her best friend Ben, I have to say I was pretty incredulous. What the hell was wrong with her I don’t know, maybe she had PMT or something, but Henry was a total sap for her, so how she didn’t see it I don’t know.
I thought that the big finale – rescuing Irene (Emily’s auntie-to-be) was okay, but I thought the fact that everybody went – including Emily’s friend Ben and the dog, was kinda odd. What need was there for them to go to? I’m sorry, but these just seemed a little weird to me. There was a happy ending though, and things were tied up nicely, which was good.
Overall; This series was okay. I didn’t like the OTT love thing between Emily and Henry though, and several other things bugged me too. If I had been reading part 1 as a free download, then I would have finished it, but I doubt I would have purchased the rest of the series. As it was, after reading part 2 – which I didn’t like, I had to think seriously over whether or not I was going to continue with these books or not. As it was, I took a break and then came back to them, and I think this helped a little, as I doubt I would have liked parts 3 and 4 at all had I read them straight after part 2. At the end of the day, this series was okay, but it was only okay for me. If you get book 1 as a freebie on kindle then it’s worth giving it a try, as I know loads of people really enjoyed these books, but personally I wouldn’t have continued reading had I not agreed to read and review this series. 5 out of 10.
Into the Dark, Vol. 4 by Milly Silver is the final installment of this 4 part series. Books 1 - 3 must be read before reading this book. I enjoyed following Emily through the series.
Success means love. Failure a death sentence.
When seventeen-year-old Oxford student Emily Baxter steps forward to become part of the search and rescue team for her kidnapped family member, she sees it as her last chance to put things right. Despite her seizures and being ripped between parallel universes, Emily is determined to get back to living a normal life. But first Emily has to join forces with the mysterious Gifted & Talented set and the darkly beautiful Henry Seadon. And survive. Killing the Misery-Makers who get in their way is a necessary evil.
In this final installment, Emily discovers Henry is not all that he seems. With her world crashing down around her, how will she rescue Irene? And as she faces the biggest decision of her life, will she have the strength to do whatever needs to be done? Find out how the exciting story end.
I was giving a copy of this book for an honest review.
Also this is a review for volumes 1-4.
This series was pretty good. I didn't know what to expect when I first started this. Emily started out really shy and man did she have a lot of seizures. But I can she sport of grew into her own as this series went on. Then there is Henry. Henry, Henry, Henry. He is a total hottie but I don't know. I just never really like him to much. He still just seems like a jerk especially at the end. But does Emily leave him....No She just forgives him. I don't know.... Overall I did enjoy it. It kept me entertained but I just wish certain things went a little different of course. But Milly Silver is a very talented writer and I will read whatever she writes next.
Into the dark is a story about romance, mystery and one girl incredible journey. I do recommend this to everyone
I received this as an ebook from the Author for Read 4 Review.
The story is about Emily Baxter who from age 13 has suffered from seizures and during these seizures she enters a parallel universe where Misery-makers are hunting her. When Emily starts at Oxford things change, truths are revealed.
I liked the concept of the story but I found some things to be confusing and others not to make sense. I'm not sure why the book was split into 4 separate volumes?
Now I wanted to cry. I wanted him to say it was all a big mistake. That he loved me and couldn't live without me. Instead, I dug my fingernails into my palms, before the dull aching began again. - Emily, Into the Dark.
The conclusion to a fantastic series that had me hooked from the first page.
Milly Silver has built an unique and exciting world, filled with endearing, interesting, lovable and well-developed characters and a fast paced plot, action packed with twists and turns that just keep amazing you all the time.
The ending left me feeling good but also yearning for more. Hopefully we will get more about Emily & Henry in the future.
Anyone who loves fantasy, paranormal YA should read this series. ITS BRILLIANT.
Thank you Milly Silver for giving me an opportunity to go on a thrilling ride.
The conclusion of this serial novel. Where all is revealed and Emily grows a spine. The first installment is chapters 1-5. The second installment is chapters 6-13. The third installment is chapters 14-20. The final installment is chapters 21-31. This final vignette was my favorite. Everything worked out.
