Have you been wondering what's been going on with Betsy the Vampire Queen after she defeated the anti-Antichrist and became Satan 2.0? And are all her entourage still with her? So here is Undead #16 -- Undead AF!
The day Betsy, Queen of the Vampires and Ruler of Hell, tried to ignore is coming soon…and she is dreading it. Betsy’s reign needs to be celebrated as her Jubilee. But Betsy has a lot on her mind at the moment. Her mother is dying, her father, who faked his own death to get the insurance money, is back in her mom’s life and so many of her staff are constantly coming to her to answer questions, answers she just doesn’t have. Add to this, vampires from all over the world want to know her secrets. How has she been able to make zombies and how can her sexy husband, Eric Sinclair, walk in the sunlight? With all this going on, Betsy wishes she only had to worry what pair of shoes to wear, not how to reign supreme over the vampires and Hell, itself.

This is a great book for those who have been following this series. It is also a good read for those who haven't since this is pretty much a stand-alone with a LOT of backstory.
If you have Kindle Unlimited you can borrow this for free (of course), if you don't then it is only $4.99.
Geez, what a book. I don't know how to describe it since anything I may say could be a spoiler.
Let's put it this way; I cried during the last quarter of the book. I can understand why Betsy's mother decided to do what she did, but I sure didn't like it. As a matter of fact, this book really looks to put an end to any other additions to this series.
One thing that didn't sit too well with me is that I kept getting some of the timelines and ages of BabyJon and Jessica's twins messed up.
Love this visit to the world in which Queen Betsy and Sinc-Lair reside in. This story is bitter sweet. Doubly so as I lost my own mother to cancer. Its been a few years since we last saw Betsy and her family and we have not turned up t a good time. Everything is so easy in Betsys world, she and Sinclair are some sort of uber vampire able to go out in daylight, survive on very little blood and consume some foodstuffs. Added to which Betsy can reanimated the dead (don't say zombies) is in charge of Hell................ (she's literally the Devil). Can communicate with ghosts ON and she's the.Queen of the Vampires.........and it's her tenth anniversary..........can anyone say party......... But for Betsy there's nothing to celebrate, her mother has cancer and she is refusing all Betsys offers to help (.after all she did cure Joanna when she was dying.) Her mum also does not want to be transformed into a vampire. So what's left.....the most powerful being on the planet is left helpless in the face of illness and the only hope she has is to pray...... like the rest of us do..............
Betsy's still dealing with the fallout from when her sister--the Antichrist--outed vampires and her as their undead queen. But there's also personal tragedy to be handled, and in true Betsy style, she is doing her best to avoid that. But how long can that go on?
Thoughts on this Book
Betsy's mom is about to die. And I really loved how the fear of that loss brings her vampire queen ruthlessness and selfishness to the surface. Her mom doesn't want to be immortal, everybody else knows that. Betsy knows that too, but is that enough to stay her hand?
I had my suspicions about the cheerful trio right from the start. There was something just not right about em.
The whole Jesus thing was just weird. I suspected that's what the author was going for but then she really did go for it. Plain weird! Does that mean we can expect a book set in heaven? Or God to make an appearance?
Ah, Eric. How far you've come from a selfish power hungry bitch to an actual partner for the person who holds the real power. I'm so here for it!
Thoughts on the Series
These are shortish reads that are great for when you don't want to read something too serious. Be warned tho, Betsy has a way of teaching you valuable lessons about friendship, family, loyalty, and ethics.
My advice? Space em out or her whining will drive you insane.
Ok, I think you've officially beat this one dead. It's over. It's done. You can't possibly get one more bad Besty story out of the series. They were so good in the beginning. Besty was funny, sassy, full of snarky humor that was a refreshing take on the vampire genre, and then it just got bad. I swear somewhere along the way Davidson was taken over by a ghost writer or aliens or something because this can't possibly still be her writing this crap. Was there even a plot to this book? The only part that made even a little sense was her mother's passing, and even that was a stretch. This book just seemed like a way to milk more money from an already dead franchise, and Davidson should have some say in what she puts her name on. It's her integrity, after all.

Gotta give it 3.5. I usually love Betsy stories. This one just felt off. I want to say unfinished, but it was finished. This story had one purpose, and to say what I think it was would be to give away the whole thing. I guess I had hoped if we had a return to Betsy that the story would be a happy one, or a whole catastrophic world ending emergency, but this one was more personal. It really was about Betsy and really no one else. Jessica only shows up at the end and barely had anything to say. Sinclair and Tina, and Marc were all present, but we really didn't find out much about what they had been doing all this time. If there are any more books to come I hope I enjoy them more.
So disappointing… I loved this series through like book 8. Then book nine was an about face (though apparently it was resolved as a possible future/Ancient Betsy) and this just tried too hard while treading water, not much happened and it was too chatty with too many footnotes. I’m rereading the first two to erase this from my memory and keep original Betsy in my mind.
Betsy is back with her cast of lovable ̷A̷s̷s̷h̷a̷t̷s̷ friends and family, and I’m so happy. Six. Years. Six years it’s been since Betsy and Sink Lair graced my Kindle with a visit.
To be honest, I think I squeed myself.
Anyway… Davidson has gotten the band back together, with the exception of Jessica. This is my only disappointment with the book. Logically, I understand why (I think) she didn’t include Jessica: because Jessica would never have stood for Betsy isolating herself. (Jessica would have gotten right up in the Vampire Queen’s face.) So, plot wise, it was necessary. Just disappointing.
But never fear! All the other favorites are here. Babyjon is adorable. Sink Lair is hot. Tina and Marc are sarcastic and supportive. There are shoes and smoothies and exotic vodka flavors. It’s a joy. Visits from Jennifer-from-Hell (reminds me of this roommate I had in college) and new character Jay round the story out. Jay’s reveal is a little on the nose (I’d have liked it to just have been implied), but he’s a good character.
Sink Lair is always a joy. His sunshine antics always make me laugh. He remains the only vampire I’ve ever known to have a tan. And the Farmer’s Market….
Betsy has always been adept at avoiding what she doesn’t want to face, and this time is no exception. But, as always, our intrepid heroine manages to do what’s important and almost experience some personal growth. But not too much, because Betsy.
I hate to use the “I laughed, I cried” cliche. All I will say is that there were moments of sadness, moments of redemption, and moments of hilarity.
Classic Betsy. New adventure.
Here’s the breakdown: Main Character- Betsy, Queen of the Vampires and Sovereign of Hell Secondary Characters- Sink Lair, Babyjon, Marc, Will, Jennifer, Dr. Taylor, Tina, Various Visiting Vampires and Random Denizens of Hell Triggers- Violence, Language, Death, Field Trips to Hell/MOA, Really Bizarre Vodka Flavors. Verdict- If you’re a Betsy fan, you’ve got to read this book. (If you’ve never read any of the Undead series, go now and start with Undead and Unwed. If you’re not a Betsy fan, I don’t even understand you, but you do you. I guess.). Highly recommended.
I fell in love with Betsy and Sink Lair way, waaaaaaaaaaaaay back. I can't imagine not jumping on an opportunity to catch up with them. The best bits of Undead AF, for me, were their interactions and the continued development of their relationship. Sinclair's Dreamy AF and when these two really connect with one another, it's Romantic and Charming AF.
On the other, more frustrating, hand--by now (16 books in!) it's a bit deflating to see Betsy continue to run from things (her husband, fam, friends, responsibilities, her own mind and conscience) only for Eric, Tina, Marc, et al, to be the sage ones who eventually rein Betsy in and push her to "grow up." I think these repeated interventions unfair to Betsy--she deserves a lot more credit for her ability to process and deal with the hard stuff of life...er, unlife? As well, she's the frickin vampire queen and current showrunner of hell; a little more respect here, please!
NB, y'all: this really isn't a standalone book--it's truly best to've read the other books in the series, in order to fully connect with #16, for the sake of keeping up with all the characters alone (so many characters!). I enjoy the callbacks to past story-lines and recycling of characters, as it were, but then there's a significant bit of info-dumping that bogs things down, just as you've gotten comfortable in the "present day" of the story.
No spoilers, but fans of the series should arm themselves with their facial tissue of choice as they near the third act, because...well, you'll see what I mean when you get there.
This volume seems to've taken an interesting path to publication, which I find encouraging, as Undead AF left enough open-ends, and questions about the future of some of my favorite vamps, as to support the argument for (many!) more books in the series. Keep giving us more Betsy, MJ, and we'll keep reading! <3
So great to be back with Queen Betsy. Sadly though all is not great, Betsy's mum has cancer, and her prognosis does not look good. Added to which there is something going on with Marc..........despite his being a zombie that is........ Then there's the fact that it's Betsy's ten year anniversary. The years since she became Queen of the Vampires there's a whole week of parties and events planned.........all of which Betsy has plans to dodge..... So, that's where we are in Betsy's world but she's not alone,as ever she has Sinclair and Tina on hand to help and Jessica (her best friend forever) is just a phone call away.......................... Can't say how much fun it was to return to Betsy's crazy life even under such tragic circumstances... Hope this is not the.last we see if her and her friends....
Just finished reading Undead AF by MaryJanice Davidson! I need more, so much more!
If you haven't read the Undead series I highly recommend!!!
In order to follow this book, you definitely need to have read the series or you will be lost. I had a hard time following at points. I had to go deep in my memories.
I am a huge Betsy fan and enjoyed the book. I hope there is another Betsy book soon! I just can't get enough of her!
This book is a definite must read for all Betsy fans! If you have not read the series, you are missing out!
Now I am going to go back and reread the whole series, then reread Undead AF again and then beg MaryJanice Davidson for another Betsy book!
After a few years we finally have a new Queen Betsy. She is reigned to her role as new Satan. But refuse to be apart of her 10 year Jubilee. Mainly she’s in denial about a lot of things. Mostly because her mother is dying. And she refuses to let Betsy “save” her. She keeps sneaking off to meet with her new friend that she rescued from a beat down. J is meek and mild mannered but he claims to know her sister. And she has a secret project going in the attic. The Jubilee is here and she has to play nice hostess to all the visiting vampires. Even takes them to the Zoo. Then things get out of hand. And the laughs keep coming. Along with some tears. I laughed so hard I scared my cat. I hope there are more Queen Betsy books to come!
I think I didn't know how much I missed Betsey and crew until it hit me when I was reading this book. Betsey has changed though, even though she is still shrill and likes to pretend to be in denial (and I hear her in my head saying " I AM IN DENIAL DAMMIT", she is actually harder, almost a bit more edged than she was. The lack of Jessica was to me, a good choice. I think Jessica really softens Betsey's edges and I think that in this book, Betsey needed all those edges and more.
I also missed seeing the twins.
I don't want to post spoilers but there are some truly heartbreaking moments in this book and some really funny ones too.
Dr. Taylor: “Young lady, I can’t believe I have to tell you this again: I have no interest in going to Hell.” Betsy: “You never want to see me workplace!”
Betsy is better in this book than in the past books, but there was a lot of new characters that I just don't care about new characters. I barely care about the old/current characters. 2 out of 5 stars.
Undead AF, book 16 of the Undead series, by MaryJanice Davidson @MaryJaniceDavidson. I would highly recommend reading the entire series before picking this book up.
This was such a good book that caught up with Betsy & Eric! Tropes: Contemporary, Paranormal (Vampires, Devil & Hell), Comedy & HEA!
