One Last Breath

Rate this book
Mount Orange, Florida, is famous for two things: cerulean freshwater springs, ideal for free divers who aren't afraid of lurking gators. And the gruesome cold case murder of best friends, Bailey and Celeste, twenty years ago.

Bailey and Celeste's murders cast a permanent darkness over sunny Mount Orange. Tru has always lived in that shadow. Now she's supposed to head to FSU in the fall with her boyfriend, but those unsolved murders—and the death of her own sister—invade her every thought. It’s only in the shadowy deep of Hidden Glen Springs that she can breathe.

When a strange girl named Rio rolls into town, hell-bent on figuring out who killed Bailey and Celeste, Tru can't resist entangling herself in the thrill of solving the decades old mystery any more than she can resist her familiar, aching attraction to Rio.

As the summer heat ignites, so does the spark between Tru and Rio…along with their otherworldy connection to Bailey and Celeste. But when someone begins stalking them, the girls become convinced the killer is back in town. And if they keep digging into the past, Tru and Rio know this time, it could be their blood that makes the springs run red.

**Many thanks to BookishFirst, Penguin Teen, and Ginny Myers Sain for an ARC of this book! Now available as of 3.5!!**

Don't fear the reaper...

Tru doesn't know what that message means when she finds it...but with the unsolved mysteries and murders in Mount Orange's past, she KNOWS it can't be good. Aside from losing her sister tragically years ago, Tru has also been saddened and fascinated by the unsolved murders of two teen girls, Bailey and Celeste, and would LOVE to use the resources at her newspaper job to dig down deep into the cold cases...because there's something inside her that tells her that SHE is meant to find the truth...but why?

Tru is also hiding a secret from her longtime boyfriend and family...not only does she not plan to go to college with him at FSU in the fall...she's not even sure if this 'perfect' relationship feels right to her anymore. Her one solace is diving, and Tru spends a LOT of her time exploring the deep and looking for answers at the bottom of the water. Enter Rio, a fascinating, beautiful, and mysterious fellow diver, who appears seemingly out of nowhere...and forms an INSTANT bond with Tru.

As the two become fast friends, their feelings start to spill into uncharted territory...and Rio reveals that she too feels a pull towards the Bailey and Celeste murders. The girls almost feel as though they were CALLED to this dark exploration...and when they start to reveal facts that only Bailey and Celeste could have known, and an indescribable feeling that they've known each other for many years in a very intimate way...the pieces seem to slowly be coming together. But when they find the aforementioned "Don't fear the reaper" note tacked to their tent one night, and hear terrifying sounds in the woods that same evening...it seems like the girls have stumbled upon dangerous information...information SOMEONE would kill to keep hidden. Can Tru and Rio uncover the secret of Bailey and Celeste's demise... before they get PERMANENTLY swallowed by the deep?

There is something so theatrical and yet accessible about Ginny Myers Sain's books, and with this one as my third read of hers, I've come to expect certain qualities when 'diving' into her stories. 😉 There will be murder, intrigue, the tortured push and pull of teenage friendships (and love stories!), and an atmosphere that ALWAYS leaps off the page...and thrusts me headlong into somewhere completely unexpected...and of COURSE, also very creepy! This time, we land in sunny Florida, and there is certainly enough detail here to bring to mind the almost oppressive humidity found only in the Sunshine State. In this one, Tru and Rio (no coincidence that this is her name, I'm sure! 🌊) also spend a great deal of time on dives and underwater, and these passages also brought the dark and terrifying nature of the Deep to life...and had me holding MY breath each time they went down!

Although I enjoyed these two main characters enough, I have to say in this one...I almost felt like TOO many of the 'townsfolk' had been invited to the party. Lots of the characters also have very odd or uncommon names (Derry, for example...and don't get me started on John Boy! 😣) I know we needed a SOMEWHAT larger cast to provide 'suspects' and give some depth to the plot itself, but unlike some of Myers Sain's previous books, this time I felt VERY much like I was reading teenagers...who were acting a LOT like teenagers. Of course, this is fine: this book IS YA, after all. But with so much emphasis on smoking, uh, 'alternative substances', and of course the burgeoning romances (or eroding romances) between several of the characters, it felt like there was almost too much going on at times...and yet, not the sort of events and feelings I WANTED to learn more about as we went along.

And then there's of course the paranormal element that is always present in Myers Sain's books, and it WAS present here...but in a muted, downplayed way. Part of this was I think intended to keep the reader guessing (and it absolutely worked!) but I have to admit after lots of buildup and the ENTIRELY unfair and tragic death of one character that I truly liked 😢 the denouement felt like a bit of a letdown and steered sharply away from the groundwork that Myers Sain had laid and the trail of breadcrumbs I had been following...and it's hard to say that I wasn't slightly disappointed. There is also a pretty heavy emphasis on the relationship (?) or not between Rio and Tru, so if you aren't into a bit of romance in your thrillers, I would steer clear.

And as to whether Tru can 'tru-ly' trust Rio?

It'll be up to YOU to revisit these lyrics after reading and see if they turn out to be true!

Love of two is one
Here but now they're gone
Came the last night of sadness
And it was clear she couldn't go on

This paranormal thriller has it all! One Last Breath by Ginny Myers Sain is about a girl named Tru who lives in a small town in Florida. She also lives with the unsolved murder of her sister, which haunts her mind everyday. She has been with her boyfriend since they were in elementary school and plans to attend Florida State University with him in the fall. The only problem with her plan is she can’t wait to get out of Florida. Her small town is the epitome of small town mentality and works on the ‘ good ole boy’ system. It has seen too many unsolved murders, including the killing of Bailey and Celeste, which happened before she was even born. When Rio shows up to Town, Tru’s whole world is rocked to its core. Could Tru and Rio be Bailey and Celeste reincarnated? Together they will work to find out who killed the two girls and they may even bond along the way.

When Trulee was young she and her friends would pretend they Celeste and Bailey, they had no idea they were pretending to be girls that were murdered. When they got older they found out what happened and found other games to play. Tru would also have vivid dreams about running through the woods and ending up face up in Elijah’s well with her throat slit and blood all around her. Trulee met Dill and Derry, Dill taught Tru and her friends how to dive at the springs of Hidden Glen, where the murders took place. One day while Tru was out at Hidden Glen, she met Rio a mysterious girl that was camping at the campsite where the murders took place. Trulee, Tru’s Boyfriend East, Paz and Rio all decided to go to Dill and Derrys homestead for a little party and all decided to spend the night. Rio and Tru left to go on a walk and when they started to walk back to home homestead Tru and loses Rio after stopping on the trail. Tru hears footsteps behind her, she becomes extremely afraid but just then Rio turns back after realizing Tru isn’t behind her, the footsteps stop but Tru can’t help but think she’s being watched. After Rio arrives in town and starts asking questions about about murders that took place 20 years ago. someone has starts stalking the 2 girls. Who is it? And why are they being stalked?

Merged review:

I absolutely loved this book!! This book starts out with a memorial service for 2 girls that were murdered at hidden glen 30 years prior. The girls names were Celeste and Bailey. They had gone camping and the next morning their bodies were found one by the tent and the other was lying in a crystal clear bottomless pool. It is where all the locals go to cool off during the hot summer days. However no one tries to swim in them at night because of the alligators like to swim in them at night.

All the local teens like to use the springs to go free diving. They swim as far down the spring as they can before coming back up again for air. Tru meets another girl named Rio and they become best friends, together they work to uncover what really happened to Celeste and Bailey several years ago and at the same time they find out who they truly are and what they are to each other.

The ending of this book was so good!! I won’t give it away but I will tell you that you absolutely need to read this book because it ended up being someone you wouldn’t have ever expected.

This one took me a little bit to get into it, but once I got really into the story I had a hard time putting it down. I’ve read this author’s previous works and I really enjoy the way she blends just the hint of the magical into realistic stories. She does an excellent job with bringing characters to life. Trulee has always been fascinated with the deaths of two best friends Bailey and Celeste before she was even born. The murders were never solved and the town hasn’t fully moved on. When Rio comes to town Trulee is instantly attracted and she doesn’t know why, but when she finds out Rio is also trying to find out what happened to Bailey and Celeste she can’t help but join in. But it’s clear that someone isn’t happy they are looking for the answers and they find themselves being hunted. I gave this one 4.5 stars rounded up because the second half of the book was impossible to put down.

Celeste and Bailey were gruesomely murdered nearly 20 years ago in Mount Orange, Florida.
Present day, Tru and Rio join forces to try and solve the cold case of the teenagers. Someone starts stalking them and disturbing things come to light. Things heat up with Tru and Rio as the summer progresses even though Tru has a childhood sweetheart.
This was a creepy, intense read that I stayed up late into the night to finish.

I'm a little salty right now.

The whole reincarnation bit was such bullshit. I was hardcore cringing every time the topic came up. In rolls Rio, a mysterious girl who lies. About everything. And she is obsessed with two unsolved murders.

Suddenly, she's telling Tru that they're long-lost lovers who were murdered by a serial killer.

Not only does Rio manage to convince Tru within a very short period of time that they've both been reincarnated and knew each other in a past life, she and Tru then tell everyone else around them the same bullshit. And everyone is just like, "Sounds legit." And proceed to help them solve their "past lives murders."

You must be joking.

Then Tru and Rio continue on to accuse literally all their friends of killing them. Well, their past lives. Whatever.

What really bothered me wasn't even the constant accusations; it was the fact Rio and Tru were so cocky about who they believed was guilty that when the suspect tried to explain their side, Rio and Tru consistently interrupt them.

It was very annoying.

And when Tru immediately falls head over heels for Rio (despite every single red flag, and there were many), Tru breaks up with her amazing boyfriend who wants to marry her and go to college with her and have a full life with her.

If Tru broke up with him just because she wanted a different future than he wanted or because she was attracted to girls, that would be understandable. But she breaks up with him because Rio convinced her they're star-crossed soulmates who were murdered together in a past life.

What a love story! *gag*

The boyfriend deserved better.

(And then he gets murdered nearly immediately after Tru breaks his heart. Poor guy couldn't catch a break.)

This is a difficult book to review. The premise sounded really interesting, and I liked the beginning. However, as the book went on, it felt apart for me. I kept waiting for the main character and love interest’s chemistry to appear, and it just…didn’t. Plus Rio’s constant lying and Tru’s emotional cheating on her boyfriend didn’t sit right with me.
Towards the end, Tru and Rio blame almost everyone they know for the murder of their past lives (without hearing anyone out or giving them a chance to speak), which results in a lot of pain and frays at the relationships I did like (the father-daughter relationship between Tru and Dill, for example). I didn’t feel like this was truly resolved by the end of the novel - if it had been, it might not have been as much of a problem for me.
I thought the reincarnated aspect of the story was really cool, but I feel like the surrounding characters believed it a little too quickly.
I did really like the setting, and the writing was immersive. I also didn’t expect the twist with Reese being the serial killer, I found that to be really well done.
There are definitely good aspects to the book, but as a whole I was let down, particularly by the character’s relationships and main character’s actions.

I was really interested in this book and the cover drew me in. However, I found the book to be not very thrilling and quite slow. YA Thrillers are some of my favorite books to read but for whatever reason I couldn’t get into this one. I even put it down and tried picking it back up, but it just wasn’t clicking. I think that I found the slow burn aspect of it to be too long and drawn out to hold my interest.

I’ve enjoyed books with slow burn plots before because they’ve had other aspects that have held my interest. I found the characters to be a bit one dimensional and lacking depth.

The premise of this book reminded me of other YA Thrillers I’ve read. Where teenage girls end up solving cold case crimes. While I don’t usually have a problem with this, I did find it to be a bit played out at this point and I was looking for more of a unique twist. To me adding queer rep and a paranormal element just wasn’t what I was looking for and it felt too familiar to me.

This isn’t a horrible book, but it wasn’t a great read. I would recommend it to certain people, but not everyone. I just wish that this book would have been a little more unique and deeper overall.

Thank you so much to the publisher G.P. Putnam’s Sons Books for Young Readers, Penguin Group, and Netgalley for this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

One Last Breath follows Tru, a young girl who lives in a Florida town that is haunted by an unsolved murder 20 years ago. This happened before Tru was even born but it is still unsolved so the town is haunted by it. When a new girl rolls into town, Tru feels a connection to her and they try to solve the murder. There are aspects of the supernatural in here as well as a lot about diving and swimming.

I didn't quite connect with this book but I'll start with the positives. I liked the Florida setting and how everything was described. It felt like you could feel the heat that was described. The diving scenes were also described great and it felt like you were under water. The first part was interesting and kept me engaged.

I don't feel like the romance was needed at all. It really annoyed me actually and it took away from my enjoyment of the book. I also feel like the second half dragged on forever. I guessed the killer early on but the characters took forever to figure it out. I also didn't really like the paranormal aspect and I don't think it added much to the story.

Unfortunately, this book did not work for me. I know many others have loved it so it might just be me. Thanks so much to netgalley and PENGUIN GROUP Penguin Young Readers Group, G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers for the arc of this book in exchange for an honest review!

One Last Breath follows Tru and Rio through summer while they try to solve a twenty year old murder in Hidden Glen.

First of all I would like to say that I am a total freak and ALWAYS figure out the whodunit of it all insanely early with very little information. That being said I still enjoyed reading this book. The story unfolds around the twenty year murder and a potential serial killer. It also has aspects of new romance and trying to figure yourself out as you become an adult.

It was a quick and entertaining read.

Mount Orange miasteczko, które słynie z morderstw. Najpopularniejsza zbrodnia została dokonana około dwudziestu lat temu. Zamordowano dwie przyjaciółki – Bailey i Celeste. To morderstwo z jakiegoś powodu od zawsze ciekawiło główną bohaterkę – Tru. Pewnego dnia w opalne lato do miasteczko odwiedza pewna dziewczyna – Rio.

„Jeszcze jeden oddech” to pozycja, którą z czystym sumieniem mogę polecić! Szczególnie, gdy szukacie czegoś, co wywoła u was ciarki strachu podczas jesiennego wieczoru!💙

I think this author will be an auto buy/auto read for me. While I didn't love this one as much as Dark and Shallow Lies, it was still a thoroughly engaging story. There were a few parts that needed to be fleshed out a little more, and one aspect that could have been written in a less cringey way but I don't want to spoil anything. I really had no idea "who done it." A solid 4 stars.

Ginny Myers Sain has done it again and wrote a phenomenal YA thriller! I'll never forget reading her first book Dark and Shallow Lies, once I started I did not stop until I turned the last page. One Last Breath had me flipping pages and disregarding life until I finished.

One of the main reasons I love this author is that their writing makes me feel like I'm actually there. One Last Breath takes place in a small Florida town in the heat of summer. I could imagine the humidity, the water, and the grief over this town since the brutal murder of two teenage girls 20 years ago.

This book follows Tru as she tries to uncover what really happened the night that Celeste and Bailey got murdered in their tent while camping. Tru doesn't know why, but it feels like it's her responsibility that she owes finding out what happened to these girls.

One Last Breath has small town vibes, a murder mystery that's intriguing, especially with the crazy twist that I didn't see coming. I love the side characters and how fleshed out the author wrote them. All the characters played such a huge part in this dark and creepy mystery.

I highly recommend this if you're looking for a fast paced YA Thriller!

Thank you to Netgalley, and to the publisher, for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

This is Ginny Myers Sain’s third book, and the second I’ve read from her, and she does not disappoint! I’m so ready to go back and pick up Secrets So Deep now after reading this. I love the slightly supernatural element that she injects into her stories, and in this one there’s a hint of reincarnation/past lives which I always love to see, although I do think that the way this played into the ending made it just a bit too difficult to suspend my disbelief. It was paced perfectly, and it was so twisty-turny right up until the very end. While it was slightly predictable in that I guessed, or had an inkling anyway, of who the killer was going to be, it turned out to be the case in a way that I was completely not expecting, so I was still surprised by the ending. This was really creepy and tense - you really just felt like the killer was around every corner and I was so on edge the whole time! This book also felt really claustrophobic throughout which I loved, with the small town vibes, the gators, the diving, the humidity, and the grief hovering over the town as well. I really think this author's books are very underrated!

A high quality audio that pulls together a long standing whodunit with elements of supernatural. I found there seemed to be a few adhic characters who didnt drive the story forward. The supernatural element seemed to build up and then nothing major but a series of conveniences. . At times the emergance of the highly seductive complex relationship between the two girl distracting and irrelevant.
I loved the descriptive nature of the novel. I think this wouldcappeal more to a young adult.

One Last Breathe is a sapphic YA thriller set in a small town in Florida which is known for a famous cold case and hence has become a kind of destination for those obsessed with true crime. It is one of those books in which the setting becomes a part of the story. You feel as if you are there. It's also a summer thriller and a summer read (there is a lot diving involved). I wasn’t the biggest fan of the writing. Somehow the character read like a much older person and that would have been okay if the character actually was like that. But it was the writing and not the character development which was making 17 year old read like a 25 year old. It's not my favourite book out there but it’s worth a read if you are into thrillers with serial killers, cold cases or just want a summer read.

FUCKING DISAPPOINTED. Tru and Rio are so fucking annoying and shitty. They ruined the story for me. AHHHHHHHHH I WAS ROOTING FOR THIS!

ROOTINGGGGGGG!!

I hate the pairing so much. The twist? It was one of the worst things. The characters here deserved better except for the killer, of course.

This book makes me SO ANGRY. I HATE THIS. I want to give this 1⭐️ but the first half was decent, so I'm settling for 2⭐️

P.S. Dark and Shallow Lies (from the same author) was much better than this.

What the flip man

TLDR:

Objectively, this books is not great. Nevertheless it is entertaining in the first half then what the fuck happened to the plot. Just watch outer banks.

I may have some biases here as I grew up literally an hour from where this book is inspired from and let me tell yall somethin. There are three things she repeats every single page to not let us forget where we are. 1. How hot and humid it is 2. That they hate tourists and everyone thinks their stupid and 3. Trulee isn’t like ✨oThEr gIrLs✨

These three things are repeated over and over and over and over and are super annoying. Next why the smut??????????? Nothing even happened it was just teasing. Also I know we are supposed to understand that they are teenagers and everything but WHY ARE THEY HANGING OUT WITH AND BEING SKETCHY WITH ADULTS????????? Why so much drinking and weed, like we get it they are young and rebellious MOVE ON!!!

also not going to FSU had nothing to do with the story imo. Oh and what was the last thing I wanted to mention……. Oh yeah, FUCKING REINCARNATION CAUSES YOU TO BREAK UP WITH YOUR LIFE LONG BOYFRIEND FOR A GIRL YOU MET THREE DAYS AGO.

Some how this book managed to put in every single cliche and trope under the sun. The fact that dumb and dumber (Tru and Rio) went through every single male character in the story as a suspect displays how stupid they are.

Perfect for those of us who like....
- haunted small towns
- True Crime/Thrillers
- Dash of supernatural
- Summer vibes
- Sapphic love stories

This small town focused story follows Tru during her last summer before starting adulthood and going to college. Did I mention this is Florida so everything trapped by the humidity. You can feel this as you read along. Tru is obsessed with the murder of two girls and develops feelings for Rio while digging into the mystery.

Ginny Myers Sain's latest work, One Last Breath, was a fantastic read. I am definitely outside the age range for this book, but I've firmly become a believer that reading YA is for everyone. You just have to live within the confines of this genre. I love the feeling of reading a story that throws my mindset back to my trying times as a teen. Plus, sometimes you just want to see what the kiddos are up to now a days.

I was overwhelmed in the best way by the diving scenes in this book. They were my favorite parts.

Thoroughly enjoyed!

This was my first Ginny Myers Sain novel but it won't be my last! I was first drawn to the cover because the colors really pop and it's also very sinister, the way you're looking through the side mirror at the girl. Really intriguing. I did not know this was going to go into a paranormal aspect (because this was my first GMS novel) and I thought it was a really cool and interesting aspect. I was pulled in from the beginning and didn't want to put it down! It's January and I live in NH so reading about such a hot and sweaty dead of summer Florida town was kind of refreshing! I really wasn't sure who-dun-it till more than halfway through but before the reveal and even then I wasn't a hundred percent confident. I didn't like that that other person that knew who-dun-it didn't seem to get in trouble in the wrap-up epilogue. But overall, I really enjoyed this book!

I’ve loved Sain’s previous books but could not take this one seriously at all, with the past lives thing. And everyone just believed it, too. And East deserved so much better. Could not stand Rio at all or how Tru just automatically believed everything she said. Such a disappointing book overall, when the mystery itself was so intriguing. And then at the end we also just happen to find out how Dani died.
