Having God’s grace and mercy is a blessing to those who receive it, but to embody it is a miracle.
Mercy Grace Speaks has her life all figured out. She has obtained a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, along with a teaching certification, and is pursuing a master’s degree in marketing and graphic design. Whether she chooses to teach it or start her own business, she knows she will be successful simply because of her strong desire to be so. Being sheltered from the wilds of the world, has helped her stay focused on her aspirations.
However, an encounter with the wrong man ruins it all. She finds herself doing things simply to please him while her life spirals out of her control, her naivety speaking loudly. While knowing right from wrong and what she should be doing, it’s like something has a hold on her. She voluntarily participates in activities that go against her morals and sucks the drive for success right out of her. She sinks to depths she’s never known, and while at the mouth of hell, she sees and meets a possible way out.
Hunter Bell, better known as Vick, has had to get it out the mud. At the age of fourteen, he was forced to become the man of the house when his father was robbed and gunned down. Being that his father was the sole provider, it leaves him and his mother destitute, not knowing where their next meal would come from. Hunter makes a way, the only way he knows how, to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table.
After years of hustling, he obtains a business degree and opens a private club. While it’s financially beneficial to him, he knows he will have to let it go eventually, just like he’s trying to escape the streets. Before that time comes, he sees a woman that could make his desire to go a different route even stronger. She belongs to someone else, but in his heart, he knows she’s giving her all to the wrong man.
Hunter and Mercy meet under unusual circumstances, but the chemistry between them is palpable. No matter how toxic the situation she’s in, Mercy is loyal to the death of her and is unable to go against the situation in place. Hunter wants to shake her and make her see that she’s allowing someone else to destroy one of God’s beautiful blessings, and just because she houses grace and mercy doesn’t mean everyone should benefit from it.
Can he convince her that with him is where she should be, or will she continue down the path of destruction until she hits rock bottom all in the name of loyalty and devotion?
Starting with poetry, writing has always been a constant in Monica's life. The interest began in her teenage years, being in love for the first time. Her love for writing has only progressed. Song lyrics and poetry led to short stories, then one day in her down time, a short story became a 56k word novel. It has been non-stop since then. Being a wife and mother, has only added to the joys of Monica's life. Attaining a BS in Sociology, helping her better understand people and their behaviors, has only helped her become a better writer, understanding characters and their complex personalities. Romance of all types has been her passion, and she plans to continue honing her skills in that genre.
Let me just preface this review by saying that yes I read the authors note, yes I’m aware of all trigger warnings, yes I’m aware that this is fiction and therefore subjective and finally yes I’m aware that what may seem unrealistic or unrelatable to me could be very real and relatable to someone else. With all that being said I went into this book with a completely open mind and I’m still asking myself WTF did I just read.
The prologue opens with us being introduced to Mercy! She is depicted as an extremely cautious woman that has a good head on her shoulders. She’s been raised by a grandmother that sacrificed to put her through college and is currently near completion of her Master’s program. To say I would expect a level of common sense from a character with such credentials goes without saying. She’s extremely aware of fkboy red flags and can pretty much pick up on various queues. She’s rescued her friend from plenty of compromising situations yet cannot do so in a matter of months after meeting Danté aka Diablo in the club. She ignore all gut feelings and intuitions with this man and jumps straight into the fire and baby is getting burned.
How did we go from an educated, master’s degree obtaining, confident woman to one that is getting pimped out nearly months later?!? Maybe it’s just me but in what setting does DV, rape, sodomy and prostitution belong in the same story as an erotica?! To expect a reader to be turned on sexually one minute, because let’s face it, that’s what reading an erotica does, to empathizing with a character getting her 🍑 beat and pimped out makes zero sense!!!! ZERO! I’ve read stories with these triggers and am not swayed one way or another when doing so but this was wrong place wrong time for me. I found myself disgusted by the behavior of these men in this story. ALL OF THEM!
Then we have Hunter aka Vick who seemingly falls in love with Mercy after just a short time of knowing her. She was freaking “sold” to him for a debt that was owed by Danté. So we are to believe that Hunter is this stand up guy that KNOWS Danté is selling experiences with Mercy in his very own club but he wants more from her?! Oh and this is after he’s had sex with her because he “couldn’t resist”. Make it make sense. A man that truly cares for a woman would not have further violated her whether consensual or not. This was a character that prided himself on how his father raised him. I don’t think daddy would approve Hunter. Despite knowing what Danté is putting her through, he sends her back to him only for the abuse to continue then calls Danté when he wants time with Mercy! Hunter was no different from the rest of the men taking advantage of Mercy in my opinion. Does he deserve a cookie for rescuing her from this abusive situation?! Absolutely not!! It’s the least any man can do knowing what a woman is being subjected to.
From there Hunter now wants Mercy for himself and expects her to just up and leave at his word and when she doesn’t he’s in his feelings and once again leaves her in a situation that could really mean her life. I’m not even sure how this situation even turned into “love” or a “HEA”. Mercy should’ve run for the hills because Hunter didn’t seem genuine to me. Him saving her seemed more about himself and what he wanted and less about what was in Mercy’s best interest. The time that he “gave” her to heal was not used. She needed therapy at the very least after the abuse she endured before she could be anyone’s wife or mother.
The ending also felt very rushed. We have men that Hunter thought he could trust when he could not snake him and bam they’re dead and we don’t get to read about it on page but we were privileged to read about all the other BS that Danté put Mercy through?! As a reader we want to experience the “street justice” being served to 💩ty characters.
There were so many other things not taken into consideration during the writing of this book but for the sake of my time, I won’t bother continuing. Save yourself the headache and skip this one.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
What an intriguing story!!! There were times when Mercy was so naive that I couldn't stand it! But I am so glad Hunter came along to help her sift through the BS. She was a too kind hearted and sweet to have gotten in the predicament she was in. Thankfully Hunter saw through her circumstances to see her beautiful heart. Excellent read!
MONICA WALTER’S HAD DONE IT AGAIN 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 THIS BOOK HAD ME A CHOKEHOLD FROM BEGINNING TO END! I SWEAR THIS WAS MY STORY MINUS THE PHYSICAL ABUSE AND BEING TRICKED OUT😔. I WAS RECENTLY JUST LIKE MERCY AND I’M GOING THROUGH MY HEALING PROCESS😔. JUST LIKE MERCY, MY HUNTER FOUND ME AND THE LOVE HE PROVIDES, THE FRIENDSHIP, TALK ABOUT FEELING SEEN FOR MORE THAN JUST MY BODY AND HEARD FR FR. THAT MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL ISH HITS DIFFERENT CAUSE THOSE WOUNDS HEAL, BUT THOSE WORDS STAY ON REPLAY AND HAVE YOU SECOND GUESSING EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY, WONDERING WHY ME😢. I CHEERED WHEN DANTE FINALLY GOT THAT AZZ WHOOPING THAT WAS LONG OVERDUE. I HAD A FEELING THAT BONUS WAS USING HER BUT DAYYYUUUMMM, THAT ISH HE WAS ON WAS BEYOND DISGUSTING AND I WANTED TO PUT A BULLET IN HIS 🍆 AND WATCH HIM BLEED OUT MERCY SO PURE, SO NAÏVE AND LOYAL BY A DEFAULT. SHE SHOULD’VE LEFT THAT DEVIL WHERE SHE MET HIM. CAUSE ALL THE ISH TALKING SHE WAS DOING ABOUT HER FRIENDS, I’M LIKE YOUR GONNA ENDS UP WORST OF THAN HER, AND U HATEDI WAS RIGHT 💔. THERE WERE SOOO MANY TIMES I WANTED TO SHAKE THE ISH OUT OF HER, ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE LEFT HUNTER AND WENT BACK TO THAT BIH AZZ PHUCK BOY. HUNTER/CHICK WAS EVERYTHING AND THEN SOME😍. THAT MAN WAS THE EPITOME OF EVERYTHING A WOMAN COULD EVER HOPE FOR IN A MAN! I LOVED THE WAY HE POURED INTO HER. SPOKE LIFE INTO HER. REMINDED HER OF THE WOMAN SHE WAS BEFORE SHE MET THE 🗑️ AZZ PHUCK BOY THAT ENDING WAS PERFECT AND I REALLY LOVED THE AUTHORS AFTER THOUGHTS. MOST DEFINITELY A MUST READ🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hunter & Mercy!! This was wild! Hunter had watched Mercy from afar and wanted her. Mercy was in a rough situation and wouldn't walk away. This story was hard for so many reasons. In the end, love prevails.
Ok… I’m starting this review off by saying I know this is an Urban Erotica, and it definitely was that however, my quotes all show the softness of this story. Now that I’ve gotten that out the way, let’s get into it! Mercy had me ready to snatch her up wayyyy too many times in this book! I know I’ve said before that I'm working on giving characters grace, but wheeeew chile, she took me back a step🤦🏾♀️ I understood her hesitancy at the beginning because with a man named Diablo, there ain’t no telling what will occur. However, as it got deeper and deeper into the story, I couldn’t help but be over her behind. I will say that she came correct in the end but baby girl sure did take her time! Now… my man Hunter/Vick was it from the beginning. I loved everything about him, especially the way he handled Mercy! He came out the gate ready for whatever, but he never pressured her, and I respected him for that. He showed up when needed and handled business accordingly. I just love me a sweet hood dude with a hint of savage in em😝 This story was perfection. Although it was a novella, it read like a full-length novel, in my opinion. Monica Walters is the GOAT, so I already knew 5 stars were coming. She gave a great storyline that had me side-eyeing her in the beginning because she was in her Urban bag a little too well. Then the sexiness came out, and I was like ok, sis, I see you. She later topped it off with soul-clenching love. Like I can admit, that it hurt me sometimes to witness the way Hunter felt for Mercy because it was sooo impactful! Anyway, I’m going to end this review here and say I loved everything about this book, even the terrible and heart-wrenching parts because they were needed. I would love to see these characters in future books!
Before I leave my review I just want to say that I read every single trigger warning at the start of this book. I also want to say that the type of topics that went on in this book are things that I usually read so I go into these types of books as open minded as possible. With that being said… the storyline itself had so much potential but at the end of the day , this book was genuinely a dub TO ME for many different reasons. But I’m only going to highlight a few (no spoilers).
First & foremost , there was a lot of repetition throughout the book. Especially in terms of the FMCs name being Mercy Grace. Every other chapter it was being brought up and how much the name means to whoever is mentioning it in that moment. Like.. okayy.. I get it. Secondly , I wasn’t a fan of The MMC although he was meant to be Mercy’s knight & shining armor. The moment he didn’t get what he wanted , he flipped the script & went cold hearted when he KNEW the type of toxic & dangerous situation Mercy was in. To me , that was also a form of abuse & manipulation. Setting boundaries is one thing but completely going cold & distant with the FMC was weird af. Which brings me to our FMC , Mercy. I completely understand the mindset of a woman that’s dealt with abuse in any form. It’s not always easy for her to remove herself despite her knowing she needs to. I also understand abuse in all forms can happen to anyone no matter how “strong” you think you are. But something about HOW her character even ended up in the situation to begin with just irritated me. Needless to say , I rolled my eyes so many times throughout this book hoping it would get better. Alas… it did not.
This story really resonated with me because I have a great friend who went through domestic abuse and left the mf although came after her and tried to kill her. Thank GOD she's alive today. And she did the right thing and left this hateful, spiteful sadistic ass piece of shit and he still tried to take her life. I'm not found to lie and say I understand a woman who stays with an abusive man. I've never been that weak minded to have to be rescued from a horrendous decision of that magnitude. Because NO ONE man or woman is worth my peace. I definitely wanted to shake the shit out of Mercy. But like Mya Angelou said when someone shows you who they are believe them. When a man tells you his nickname is Diablo bitch you need to run your ass in the other direction. He didn't get that shit for plucking flowers and cuddling puppies. Mercy talking about her friend dumber than a box of rocks. This bitch was worse just knowing the pitfalls she fell into but still chose to fuck with Diablo. I can't have no sympathy for her whatsoever. The author calls it naivete. No Mercy was just a dumb ass like her friend.🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️
Author Monica Walters, ma'am!! 🔥🔥 I LOVED Mercy and Hunter's story. Mercy is such a pure soul, I wished she listened to her intuition when she met Dante. I was 10% in and already steaming mad because he had some AUDACITY!! Whew, let's just say I'm glad he got what deserved. Definitely a most hated character! But Hunter??!? Baby Hunter is THAT ninja! The way he was so passionate with Mercy their first time, it had to be love. The only flaw in Hunter (just my opinion) was when he didn't give my girl grace when they were at the hotel. Maybe he didn't know how hard it can be for someone to leave their abuser, I don't know. Otherwise he definitely made up for that small part. This read is 5 stars!
Whew!! Mercy,Mercy Me!! Take Me is one book that will definitely take you for a ride !! Mercy Speaks is a young woman who feels like she has her head on her shoulders and got it all together until she meets the devil. Mercy finds herself in a relationship with a man who has her compromising who she is and her morals because of loyalty. Meeting Hunter allows Mercy to see she has been giving her all to the wrong man. Mercy will definitely have rooting for her and cursing her out at the same time ! You want Mercy to want more for herself!! Hunter is all man baby and with purpose! Monica always know how to write the kind of book baes that stay on your mind long after the last page!
I also read the prologue and the authors note and still remained confused at how the story turned out. I wanted so much for Mercy, I wanted her to put her intelligence to use. Mercy showed some problematic traits especially the way she viewed her friend Lashay, when they were one and the same! Also, Hunter was no better than Dante IMO. Hunter gaslit her like a MF! Smh. Because it was considered a novella, the story felt rushed. Some stories don’t need a happy ending, some stories don’t have justice - I was left with many unanswered questions - how can Hunter so easily leave the dope game? Who killed the 3 guys and how did they die? Is Hunter now no longer indebted to anyone? Idk! I just felt many of the dots didn’t connect.
Whew, this was a good erotic romance! Mercy, This may have been an erotic romance, but you will find strength of a woman whom endured abuse, emotionally, psychologically and physically! Huner was Mercy's saving grace in every aspect of the word, though, he just wanted to be loved as well. Hunter's alter ego, Vick wasn't no joke. Dante/Diablo is what you would call a devil in sheep's clothing. The manner in which Hunter and Mercy were able to come together after their initial encounter was intriguing and true to Monica's ability to have her readers stay vested in the storyline. I enjoyed the epilogue!
Her name demonstrated how pure and loyal her heart was. Diablo/Dantae' was indeed a devil in sheep skin the way he preyed upon her from the beginning he felt her out knowing he could control her and that's what he did from day 1. Hunter/Vic even though he had his own demons he knew when he discovered Mercy Grace Speaks it was just something about her even though he tried to take her out of her situation he knew he couldn't force her and had to allow her to find herself again, the betrayal he felt from his long time friend Jay hit hard but he recovered and all that were involved paid for all their transgressions. Great read.
Once again thank you Monica for always giving your readers a wonderful Black Love Story. I also wanted to just shake Mercy and tell her to run away from Dante fast😀 But I can relate to her cause when I love I love hard and unconditionally too so it takes time for us to see the big picture in people. I so enjoyed this story and I’ve read all of your other great books. As long as you continue to write this great books I will continue enjoy reading them❤️ Thanks again Also tell Uncle Mayor I’m his biggest fan😂😂
Monica, oh my lord, I really wanted to have a deep conversation with Mercy. She really was so green to me. I loved her loyalty though, she just didn't know who to be loyal to. I love how she finally understood her worth. Hunter, was just a special kind of man. I was so glad he showed Mercy tough love and her worth. This read was so emotional as well as enlightening to me. As women we should never judge anyone for doing what they do in the name of love. 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
Mercy went through some things in this book. Diablo was trifling and deserved every bit of the karma he received! The best thing he did for Mercy was introduced her to Hunter. Hunter was her knight in shining armor! He came into her life and showed her how she was supposed to be treated. Their chemistry was off the charts from the beginning! No matter how much he tried walking away, he couldn't. Everything about Mercy had him stuck! Once they got together, everything was amazing. They were perfectly in tune! Awesome read, Monica!
⭐️⭐️.✨/🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ First, I would like to say check your trigger warnings. This was a dark urban romance. I want to say the romance part of it is what made the stars for me. The other part was a little bit too triggering for me, but the author did a great job of not making it too graphic. I do think the FMC was just so naïve and kind hearted that I didn’t feel bad for the things that happened to her, which were a lot. But she won’t do it; she had a good godly MMC swooping in like the fictional knight he is and saves her.
This had all the things readers love about a Monica Walters read--and yes, I know it was a novella but it was just too short. I wanted to know more about Vick and I just don't understand Mercy's level of naivety. It really should matter though because if anybody EVER approached me talking bout they call me Diablo, I am sprinting like Flo Jo! Nonetheless, it was a page turner that is definitely an enjoyable read that will keep readers locked in. Maybe Monica will spin the block and give us a spinoff/update of sorts.
While that sing said, "Mercy said no," this Mercy here doesn't know the word, No! I couldn't believe she fell in that rabbit hole with Dante!!!!! Oh my word, but hey, Hunter, my genna came through, though. He made the right things happen despite how they started out. Wow, this story was an eye opener, and believe it or not, some women stay in these toxic relationships with men like Diablo. I pray their strength to get out asap. Great read Mo! Much respect!
Her names along represent what she needed in this story with Dante aka Diablo. He was a menace to no end and I couldn’t stand his behavior towards her. I glad she saw the light before he did something really bad to her. I did get mad at Mercy when she didn’t pick Vick and she chose the lateral at first. Thankfully, he didn’t give up on her when it mattered and that saved her life for real. Ms. Walters, this story was one for the books!
I have loved this author’s books from my very first read a few years ago. This book was great, and you get all the emotions wrapped up in one book. I liked the fact that the street hustle was not so prevalent in the story, it was there but you got just enough, and it didn’t take center stage. From tears, to smdh, to “I know she didn’t “, it’s all there. I also love when the moms have a good relationship with both MCs and each other.
This started off really fast pace but I feel like once it slowed down, I was really engaged with the story. I was really wanting Mercy to get out her terrible situation and find herself again. Because she started off with talking about getting her masters degree but continues to make poor choices. Part of me feels like she gets lost in Dante just to get lost in Hunter except he’s better? I guess. I dunno.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️|🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Whew this was so good and spicy! It was heartfelt, action packed, and detailed. When you read Monica Walter’s writing you’ll never regret it! It always well well written and has great character development! I’m fully satisfied with the outcome of the story and had so much fun reading!
Monica....... What the Hell when I be thinking man she can't out do this last book I just shake my head I'm like this damn .... that's why she is Author of the year this sister is the bomb diggity loved it this book reminded of some ladies I know, loved how Hunter showed Mercy she was more than that when she lost her way. Monica you are the BOMB
A good read with a title that definitely describes the story within. The storyline was crazy to me and had the drama, secrets, lies and abuse. Characters that were naive, gullible, evil, and finally a real man came along. I enjoyed this read and can't wait to see what this author brings next.
Let me start by saying that Hunter or Vick could take me! Lol! Dante needed what he got. He pressured her from the start. I hate she took her journey to love but she also learned what fake love was versus real unconditional love. This book was spicy 🌶️ 🥵 I loved every bit of it!
Meeting Dante/Diablo was Mercy’s first mistake but out of that meeting came her chance to meet Hunter/Vick. Hunter showed her what a real man is supposed to be like to a woman. Although Mercy took some lumps and had moments of low self-esteem she was able to get out that funk with Hunter’s help. Couldn’t stand Diablo/Dante!
