The Caregiver

Rate this book
She’s meant to care for my family. But actually she wants to destroy us all.

I’m at breaking point. I’m a stay-at-home mom and I love my four-year-old twins more than anything — but they’re a handful. My husband’s always away on business. My mother’s in the early stages of dementia. It’s a lot.

How does an 81-year-old woman, who hasn’t left her bedroom in months, simply vanish into thin air? I’m trying not to freak out at the thought of my mother wandering the neighborhood, lost in a daze of confusion.

We found her — but that was the moment I knew I needed help.

So I let Dana into my home.

She seems like the answer to my prayers. She’ll be my mother’s live-in caregiver.

Soon there are red flags.

I catch Dana gazing at my husband when she thinks I’m not looking. She tells my daughter she’s ‘part of the family now’. My son Sam becomes silent and withdrawn.

And then, a few weeks after Dana’s arrival, I enter my mother’s bedroom — and get the shock of my life.

I ask Dana to leave. But she won’t.

Sooo many dead bodies and plot holes......

Sooo little time.

WARNING: This book about the caretaker from hell required a HUGE suspension of disbelief.

OUCH, OUCH, OUCH....
From start to finish, my eyes continued to roll at a rapid speed.

I listened to the audiobook, expertly narrated by Stephanie Németh-Parker and Joel Richards.

Both narrators did an outstanding job with the narration, and this helped elevate the book's star rating.

2.5 stars, rounded up.

Firstly, thank-you to @joffebooks for providing me with an ARC copy of this book! 🥰

OH MY GOODNESS! This book was so quick paced, easy to read and full of drama! 😳This is the first book I have read by this author and it did not disappoint! 😍 It follows Morgan as she looks for someone to help care for her Mum who has dementia and has managed to get out the house! In comes Dana and that is just when a series of events start to happen and oh wow! This is an absolute MUST read! 😍

Many thanks to Joffe Books for this eARC.

This kept me awake until 2am, it’s so unputdownable, & the ending will fill you with glee

‘By the time the police arrive at the house, I’m hyperventilating.’ From this first line to the last, this book will hold you captive.

I love the premise and the narration is realistic and so well done. This writer knows human nature so well. Some of the main character’s reactions had me yelling ‘no!’ at her, yer simultaneously I could understand her sheer frustration and anger. Even the nasty woman was relatable, which takes skilled writing.

Each character feels unique and comes to life on the page, and the many bumps in the road and twists and turns make this a memorable read.

With so many great phrases, I found it difficult to choose just a these three, but here are my favourites …

‘Panic surges up inside me and I squeeze my hands into fists, trying to quell the emotional rollercoaster before it takes off with me on board.’

And …

‘My heart is banging against my ribs so forcefully it feels like it’s trying to break free. How in the world can it be beating this hard when I feel like I just died inside?’

And …

‘I can feel the lie wedged between us—in the tremor of his hand, and the harried glance he shoots my way.’

The ending had me laughing aloud with glee. Talk about Karma! As you’ve probably guessed, this book gets a resounding 5 stars from me. Go read it now. You’ll lose sleep too, but only in the best of ways.

***

NOTE ON RATINGS: I consider a 3-star rating a positive review. Picky about which books I give 5 stars to, I reserve this highest rating for the stories I find stunning and which moved me.

5 STARS: IT WAS AMAZING! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN! — Highly Recommended.

4 STARS: I WOULD PULL AN ALL-NIGHTER — Go read this book.

3 STARS: IT WAS GOOD! — An okay read. Didn’t love it. Didn’t hate it.

2 STARS: I MAY HAVE LIKED A FEW THINGS —Lacking in some areas: writing, characterisation, and/or problematic plot lines.

1 STAR: NOT MY CUP OF TEA —Lots of issues with this book.

Will and Morgan employ Dana, as a carer for Morgan's mother, who has dementia. When the elderly lady dies, Dana is no longer needed, but she refuses to leave and starts a campaign of hatred and vitriol against Morgan.

I was so confused! The job has ended, she's refusing to leave, just kick her out! With what she was up to, the police would never have backed Dana and effectively allowed her to have free reign of her employers home, while Morgan went to stay in an airbnb. There was no foundation to Dana's behaviour and Morgan just rolled over and allowed her to make demands.

There was a secondary storyline about a serial killer which didn't link to the main story and didn't get resolved.

Sorry, but this didn't work for me.

2 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, N. L. Hinkens and Joffe for an ARC in return for an honest review.

A fast read with a decent storyline, a confusing second storyline woven in and an ending that did not make sense.

Will and Morgan live the quintessential suburban life while caring for Morgan’s mother who has dementia and needs more care then they can provide. Enter Dana who seems to be the perfect candidate to help take care of Morgan’s mother. What follows are twists and turns that make you question how the plot could get so far fetched. The character change for one in particular felt like it came so far from left field and was so unbelievable it turned me off from enjoying the book. The secondary storyline of a serial killer/rapist was so beyond confusing and the way that wrapped up just was head scratching.

Overall I would give this book a 2.5 as it was such a quick read, held my interest for the most part and had the bones to be a hit. Unfortunately as I mentioned it just felt so disjointed with the character development I was going “oh please” at time.

The Caregiver was the first I've read by Hinkens, so it was a brilliant introduction to her writing style.

It had me hooked from the opening paragraphs and I couldn't flip the pages fast enough. The plot is seriously compelling, gripping and everything you want from a thriller.

There's twists, turns aplenty and an ending that had me shooketh! I wasn't expecting that to happen at all. But as they say Karma's a bitch and you never know when she'll strike!

The characters had me shouting at the pages in frustration more than once. Dana really was the 'caregiver' from hell wasn't she? It should be noted that she comes complete with triggers for gaslighting and narcissism.

I absolutely loved it. It's an enjoyable and entertaining thriller.

The Caregiver was an extremely fast paced gripping binge read. I was immediately drawn to this book due to the relatable premise and length (only 244 pages!). Although there was an abundance of superficial, monotonous dialogue, N.L. Hinkens delivered plenty of twists, turns, and questionable behaviors of nearly each one of the characters that I had a hard time setting it down. I loved how the characters were authentic, conniving, and deceptive.

I recommend this book to any reader that prefers fast paced-binge reads that are equally gripping as they are entertaining and delivers one twist after another. Fans of Daniel Hurst, Kiersten Modglin, and Shari Lapena will most likely enjoy N.L. Hinkens writing style too.

I really liked the book and found myself engaged from start to finish while reading it. Hinkens has a special gift for grasping the reader’s attention right from the introduction of the books, and she did so again with this one. The writing was smooth, and I found myself engrossing in the story and quickly flipping to the next page to learn what would happen next. The book's pacing was just right; I was holding my breath through most of the book.

Thank you to Zoé from ZooLoo’s Book Tours and Joffe Books for allowing me to read and review this book.

Idk guys this one was nottt for me. Ended up skimming a lot of it bc the plot had like 800 holes and i just wanted it to be over. Wym ur hiring a woman to take care of ur family and live with u but u dont run a background check or talk to her previous employer or write up a tenant agreement?? This couldve been avoided with like 0.2 seconds of common sense? Also one of the lines "back and forth across the kitchen floor like a demented mouse" come ON you can do better. 1.4

This is the very first book I’ve ever put down and not finished. I simply did not care. How dumb to just let this person “blackmail” (is that what she was doing??) you into this situation. It was unbearably bad.

Review:
Having had an experience of facing the devestation of Dementia with my Nan, it is safe to say this book really did pique my attention, along with the striking front cover and sinister description, I really needed to delve into this one.

Straight away the story kicks off and it is not long before you are feeling the tenseness and frustrations of certain characters. As for the characters themselves, I wouldn’t say they were overly likeable but as I didn’t know who could be trusted anyway, this wasn’t a problem. What I will say though is my heart went out to little Sam, I just wanted to reach into the book and protect him myself.

I managed to work out some of the plot myself, yet the author did also keep me on my toes with certain things too, so I appreciated this. There was a very tense build up followed by an explosive climax and a weirdly satisfying epilogue.

This book really did have me feeling all the feels at times, it is a bit of a rollercoaster and I enjoyed that it was a quick, snappy read. There was plenty going on and get your teeth stuck in to, so much so I devoured this in two sittings.

Morgan is a stay at home mum to 4 year old twins. Her husband is away a lot on business. Add to that her 81 year old mother who has an early dementia diagnosis, and the challenges mount. She realises that she cannot handle this alone and needs assistance. And so, Dana enters their lives as her mother's live-in caregiver. Initially, Dana appears to be a godsend, offering the support and care that her mother desperately needs. However, it doesn't take long for subtle signs to surface, hinting at a more sinister motive behind her actions.
One fateful day, upon entering her mother's room, Morgan is confronted with a sight that leaves her reeling in shock. The truth reveals itself in the most unexpected manner, forcing her to confront the harsh reality of Dana's intentions. Confronted with the unsettling truth, she musters the courage to demand Dana's departure from their home. However, her refusal to comply plunges her into a state of panic and uncertainty. As the facade crumbles, the realization dawns that the very person entrusted with caring for her family may, in fact, be their downfall.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and it was a true masterpiece of suspense and intrigue. With each chapter, the suspense intensified, keeping me eager to uncover the truth hidden within the pages. By the time I reached the end, I was left in awe of the sheer brilliance of the story, and the suspenseful journey it took me on.

"𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝒂 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆--𝑰'𝒎 𝒂𝒇𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒅 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒔 𝒎𝒚 𝒇𝒂𝒎𝒊𝒍𝒚."

I am obsessed with books about people who won't leave your home because it's one of my worst irrational fears.

Will, Morgan, and their twins are a typical suburban family. Will is consumed by his work and is stiff and formal, even stand-offish, while Morgan is caring for her elderly mother who is suffering from dementia. She's overwhelmed and in need of support, so when her mother wanders off and briefly goes missing, she knows that she needs help. She finds it in Dana, the sister of a neighbor who has been helping out with their kids but is no longer needed.

At first, everything is great. But when a change in circumstances means that Dana is no longer needed, Morgan expects her to pack up the guest studio and go.

But she doesn't.

The two women are at a stand-off, the police get involved, and Will, who never wanted Dana there in the first place, is strangely reluctant to put his foot down. There are a few chapters from Will's POV in which the reader gleans some eye-opening information!

There was a secondary plot line that felt totally out of place, but it didn't deter from my enjoyment of the book.

Thank you to NetGalley and Joffe Books for this early read. This title will publish June 27, 2024.

This is the first book that I've read by this author, but I'm pretty sure it won't be the last.
I love my psychological thrillers twisty and this one delivers.

Struggling mum Morgan realises she needs some help when her elderly mum goes missing from her room one day.
Keeping an eye on her twins and caring for her mum who has dementia is just too much and so she employs a live in caregiver to help out.
It's not long before she gets a bad feeling about Dana and asks her to leave, but the caregiver has plans of her own...

This one kicks off with a bang and the tension is already right up there from the very first page.
This is packed with action and so full of twists that I just couldn't put it down.

I love the dual pov which gave us a better insight into the events of the book and also the emotions flying around.
But also created that extra bit of distrust between the characters and their own mental state.

The writing style was super exciting and I stayed up late into the night to get this finished asbinjust had to know how it would all end.

A great read and definitely an author I can't wait to read more of.

🔪 WOW! I have not stayed up late to read a good book like this in 1 night in a LONG time! It had it all-crazy emotions, relatable characters, twist after twist, love, and revenge.
After a stay at home mom of twins hires the caretaker, Dana, she thinks she found the caregiver of her dreams. Soon though, some red flags start happening… did she just catch Dana gazing at her husband? Why has her son suddenly become silent and withdrawn? Then, it gets worse. She finds her mother dead! Why won’t she leave?!
🔪 This author did an amazing job writing these characters, making you angry, making you relate to them, and wanting revenge too! Did not expect that ending but it sure was a good one!!!!

Great writing, loveable characters, effective storyline. What’s not to love?!

Off I go to search for any and all books by this author.

Morgan and her husband’s lives are turned upside down when the carer they hired for Morgan’s sick mother turns into the tenant from hell. As the plot thickens, who is the bad guy? And how will it all end??

I’m not ashamed to admit that the epilogue had me LAUGHING with karmic excitement!

The Caregiver by N.L. Hinkens is a pulse-pounding, spine chilling, deliciously thrilling bouts of psychological suspense that will leave you gaping and horrified! This was my first book by N.L. Hinkens but certainly not my last as she writes fast paced and breathless novels. My jaw dropped a few hundred different times while reading and the ending blew my mind. Captivating, powerful, sly and oh so deadly!

This was a twisty tale that kept me in suspense throughout. The entire plot is a mum/daughter’s worst nightmare and the way it was written made you feel like you were actually there watching it happen. This would make an excellent TV series or movie! I sort of guessed the ending but it still was quite a shock. I very much recommend reading this but, just a warning, you won’t be able to put it down!

Eeeeeekk, now this is an unsettling, frightening situation. OMG! This had me by the scruff of my neck, I couldn’t put this down. I was completely immersed in it, the story is definitely one that you had to find out what the next move would be. I was constantly getting the heebie jeebies, there were plenty of shocking moments.
I do however have a slight ick, and it’s about the parents. How the hell did they let it go on for so long?! (Btw I know it’s fiction 🙂)
I absolutely loved this thriller.

This book is a very quick and satisfying read. Morgan has young twins and her mother to take care of. She hires a live in caregiver and this turns into the worst decision she made. The story is told from Megan’s POV and I loved her character. I don’t know what I would do if I was in the situation where a caregiver/tenant won’t leave but I know I would just as frustrated as Megan. The story moved quickly and I loved it!

This books gave amazing creepy vibes! Definitely gives food for thought on who you invite into your home!!

I will admit to shouting at some of the characters for the naivety/stupidity of their actions, but could also see why they would just assume the good in people.

The twists were so so good and I was hooked right until the end, talking of which, that is one of my favourite endings!! Really wasn’t expecting that!

The caregiver by N.L. Hinkens.
This was a really good read. I did like the cover. I didn't trust Dana from the start. I did find it predictable, especially about Dana. It did have some surprising twists in it that I didn't see coming. I didn't like the ending. I feel like it hasn't ended properly. 4*.
