Paradise to hell in a couple of days. It should have been a simple pick-up but for the mining ship firing at them and the planet tearing itself apart. The Kestrel landing party sent to rescue the science survey team need to be rescued themselves. But the Kestrel can't find them for all the debris in the air from the asteroid Impact; and the miners have orders to kill them all.
I’m not a big fan of science fiction, but I love a story about a cataclysmic natural disaster, and this book doesn’t disappoint. There are supersized seismic events aplenty, as the unfortunate planet Arcadia is destabilised by an asteroid hit and the ill-conceived inroads of a greedy mining company. A team of scientists checking out the planet for potential colonisation must escape from volcanoes, earthquakes and a massive tsunami in order to survive. An easy, fast-paced and suspenseful read with relatable characters from various planetary cultures. This is the latest book in the Flight of the Kestrel series, but it works well as a standalone novel.
Ms. Thomas asked for Beta readers and she accepted me. I had read “Crisis of Conscience” a while back, so I had some background for this book. However, she paints a clear picture of the wide variety in the cast of characters and their respective roles as the plot unfolds, without causing any confusion. The story has a good pace, with plenty of action that drew me in and kept me engrossed, turning the pages right through to the finale. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to you.
