PICKLED MAGIC: WIZARDS and DRAGONS

Rate this book
Apprentice wizard, Walter Farmfound, was born with the rare and precious gift of the ferocious Wild Magic which, he’s recently discovered, is completely impossible to control; at least not without terraforming everything within a half mile radius, since it’s an unstoppable force of nature, completely unhinged and with a life and an agenda all of its own.

Walter is only truly able to call upon his all-powerful and untameable magic is when he’s completely sozzled, or at least partying hard with the faeyries. Although once he is pickled the apprentice is no longer beset by any of those pesky, restraining inhibitions or, conceivably, a single functioning brain cell. So what could possibly go wrong?

Regrettably, Walter’s terrible step-father has unknowingly caused the apprentice to avoid anything alcoholic, which proves to be a more serious problem than at first glance, since the singular potion that could potentially release Walter’s magic, and his dreams, is over ninety-eight percent proof.

Walter firmly believes that when his magic is unleashed and finally under his control, he will at last be able to make his former tormentors back home pay for all their years of unsought-for . . . attentions; since who in their right mind messes with a proper wizard?

After several disastrous, hysterical magical incidents on his farm and in his local town, including one unforgettable afternoon with a very hungry and sentient compost heap, Walter is discovered by Mufti, a wizard Seeker and is brought to the Wizards Keep in the Capital city of Vikksaporubb to be indentured to the extravagant Senior Wizard, Marlyn.

Although, when Walter says, 'proper wizard,' what he actually means is that he hopes he eventually will be one after his apprenticeship is successfully completed; if he ever manages to survive his Master's relentless tests and his unforgiving alcohol-fuelled . . . potions.

Wizards and Dragons begins at a gentle pace but quickly develops into a hilarious, Pratchett-esque journey of unruly discovery, naughtiness, witticisms, puns and ever more wild and eccentric characters.

The laughter and surprises as Walter’s story unfolds will envelope the reader in an ever-increasing torrent of riotous and unexpected twists and turns of wild, Wild Magic and even wilder and ever more eccentric characters whom the wizard’s apprentice encounters on his quest to free his irrepressible magic and at last right the wrongs of his past.

At first glance it may appear these books are simply about unlocking, and then utilising, magic to take revenge; but they are concerned with so, so much more than something as mundane as payback. They are written for the bullied, but also about the healing power of laughter, hope, love & surprising friendships.

Wizards and Dragons is the precursor to the riotous rollercoaster of magic and mayhem that is yet to come

This is the first book in the Pickled Magic series and I found it to be hilarious! Walter Farmfound is a hapless magicians apprentice who just can't get his magic to do what he wants it to. This series is very Pratchettesque. It's most definitely not Discworld!! It's Discworld-ish. Poor Walter has been bullied and beaten all his life. He desperately wants to be a powerful wizard mainly to get revenge on all of the horrible creatures that have made his life miserable. This book is so much fun! I laughed, giggled and groaned at a pun or two just because I find puns silly but that's me. It's a fantastic start to a very promising trilogy. Read this series! You won't be disappointed. Five stars all the way!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
