Lyra Moreno's life has fallen apart. Her latest book was a literary flop, and her on-again-off-again relationship was, again, off. When her sister suffers a stroke, Lyra returns to her small hometown to temporarily run her sister’s dance studio.
Lyra hopes the familiar setting will help heal her wounds and distract her from the pressures of a relentless agent, hungry publicists, and the curious public. It might have worked if she hadn’t run into an old flame—Alexis Marsh, now Alexis Cole.
Alex
Alexis’s worst fear was coming true—turning out like her mother. She followed the tried and true formula to happiness a handsome husband with a great job, two kids, a beautiful house, and a homemaker lifestyle. She should be happy. She is happy.
Her carefully curated reality begins to crumble when a ghost from her past breezes Lyra Moreno. Her high school sweetheart and first love—a person she had convinced herself had been little more than a minor character in a passing phase.
So why does she feel the need to prove she’s happy?
Ivy Whitaker writes paranormal romance and contemporary sapphic love stories designed to make your heart ache in the best way. She’s obsessed with crafting believable characters and throwing them into unbelievable situations—because love is messy, healing is hard, and happily-ever-afters are always worth the fight.
A multi-series, multi-genre author (who has it on good authority from her partners that she’s doing a good job), Ivy lives in Western New York with her partners, her human child, and four demanding fur children. When she’s not writing, she’s probably wrangling chaos, designing something witchy, or drinking a cup of coffee she (almost) forgot she made.
This book was certainly heavier than my last few sapphic reads. Nonetheless it was beautiful story. Very sad and heartbreaking at times but beautiful. I did enjoy that it wrapped up happily because I felt that the characters had been through enough and they deserved their HEA.
Boys Don’t Dance is a sapphic romance written by Ivy Whitaker, and published in May of 2024. It follows Lyra Moreno and Alexis Marsh (Cole) a decade after their break up. They were each others first love, and were forced apart by family and society. But they’ve both done well for themselves. Lyra is a 5 time best selling author, and Alexis is the mother of two beautiful children, and the wife of a state trooper. They both should be happy, but something feels like it’s missing. When Lyra returns home after her sister suffers an unexpected medical emergency, she has to take over her sisters dance studio, teaching classes and managing financial accounts. She feels a bit out of her element. Alexis has her world turned upside down when she sees Lyra of all people teaching her daughters dance class. She was not expecting to see her childhood ex anytime soon, and she was not expecting all of her suppressed feelings to come roaring back to the surface. But she’s married, she has children. Is she really willing to uproot their lives for a childhood love?
As far as the plot goes- I really enjoyed the story. It was interesting and easily kept my attention, it was well written overall, the characters were consistent, and I had fun reading it (even when I was crying). But that’s kind of where my enjoyment ends. While I think it was overall well written, there were a few word choices that I felt were off. Using “exacerbated” and “tummy”(not speaking to or around children) in the same characters POV was personally jarring. I was expecting the word choice to be more complex, and then was hit with “Shame filled her tummy”. On top of that, there were several times where the text message conversations were formatted incorrectly. It’s very hard to explain, but I will try to include screenshots to show. Like I said- I enjoyed the storyline. I thought it was done very well. But the issues I had with it ended up kind of dampening my enjoyment of the book as a whole. I think it’s definitely worth the read, despite my star rating I do recommend it, just know there are some formatting issues, etc.
(Note: I was not able to attach screenshots to this review- if you would like to see what I’m talking about I will link to my blog where I talk about it! https://www.tumblr.com/whatsvivireadi... )
I've had the delightful pleasure of knowing Ivy and being one of her ARC readers for a long time now! I read Boys Don't Dance in its infancy, and now I'm here reading it again in preparation for it being out in the world - and I'm so very happy for that fact!!
This is such a beautiful book and a book you can see Ivy has put her whole heart and soul into. It's so much more than just a "sapphic romance", "second-chance romance", "frenemies to lovers" etc.
It's familial bonds, it's different kinds of love, it's overcoming bigotry, and all the deeply rooted fears and doubts they can instil. It's about acceptance, of yourself and others. It's about realising you CAN turn things around and start again. It's knowing you're allowed to want more, knowing you can know you deserve more. It's just an absolutely amazing book, with some truly beautiful lines and characters you'll love.
"Boys Don't Dance" handles some tough themes with finesse and is carried along by characters I easily found myself caring for. I can't wait to see if more stories will crop up in this little world - Mindy for sure is a character I desperately want to dive into, the snippets we got from her indicate a deeper story to be told!
This is Ivy's writing at its best, truly lovely with a beautiful flow - I read this in one sitting - and I'd absolutely implore all of you to give this one a read! It was achingly sweet, funny, relatable, with a healthy sprinkling of spice - a little bit of something for everyone!
I received an ARC of this book. It was interesting. It was nice to see Lyra and Alex rekindle their feelings for each other which had to end because Alexis was afraid to come out. The story line was great and beautifully written. I fell in love with both Alexis and Lyra cause their individual personalities seem so similar to people I know. It is a slow burn, second chance read, and I am sure you will enjoy reading this!!
Boys Don't Dance by Ivy Whitaker is a story of hope. It shows us what could happen if we hold on until it gets better. It demonstrates the struggles that some in the queer community still suffer from today: religious persecution, familial rejection, soul-crushing loveless marriages, and small-town mentality that some may even forget exists, but can suffocate a heart that dares to be different. Two women get a second chance with their first loves when circumstances bring them in proximity after several years. This book was realistic and relatable in many ways. I had all kinds of big feels. I may have even teared up a bit. I know from personal experience the difficulties of trying to sneak out of the closet later in life. I know the challenges of discovering oneself amid oppressive bigotry and the religious superiority complex that overlays conditions on love and presses the feeling of wrongness onto the vulnerable spirit until it becomes something that has to be forcibly stripped away to begin a healing process. This HEA is the ideal reward for enduring so much. Realistically, things don't always work out, but this beautiful what-if is certainly encouraging. The writing is very well done. Sometimes poetic; Whitaker has a lovely way of expressing an array of complicated emotions and situations. After reading, I find the title to be a perfect choice. Bonus for POC characters, a sensitive, supportive male, and best friends espousing wisdom. Triggers for self-harm, religious oppression, and family rejection. I absolutely recommend giving Boys Don't Dance a read! I received an ARC from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Pure. Heartwarming. Amazing. This book is all those things and more. What happens when Lyra has to come home for an emergency and she’s faced with her ex-lover? Gahh this book was so sweet and even a little spicy. Ivy did a fantastic job of telling this story so beautifully that I was mesmerized the whole time.
Lyra knows who she is and lives her life how she wants to. She is this beautiful character who truly deserves the world. She has a pure soul and is honestly someone who I would want to be friends with. I truly enjoyed and loved her character.
If you’ve already read this book then you already know Alexis probably had you feeling many different emotions. I was so heartbroken for her. I hated that she couldn’t be true to herself and how she felt so alone. As much as I wanted to rush her… it wasn’t possible even if it was in the real world. What she needed to do was based on her own time and I’m just glad that she got there. The progress through the pages was absolutely beautiful to see.
I fell in love with both Lyra and Alexis. Although their love story was full of ups and downs, I enjoyed every moment of it. I loved that this book allowed for deep conversations and thoughts. I loved that Ivy created this story that is very real and talks about topics that happen every single day. I really encourage you to read this book!!

Diving into this book is akin to embarking on a voyage of self-discovery, where every page unfolds a new layer of introspection and growth. Overall, it's captivating and peppered with moments of intrigue and enlightenment. However, like any journey, there are moments where the pace falters.
The story is good and keeps the reader engaged. Each character's journey towards self-acceptance is depicted with a rawness that resonates deeply. These complexities of human emotions laid bare, remind us of our shared vulnerabilities and strengths.
One aspect that occasionally disrupts the flow is the inconsistent pace. At times, the pace slows and momentarily detracts from the overall momentum, but it picks up boosting the story towards its poignant conclusion.
The ending is beautiful. In these final chapters, the themes of self-growth and acceptance truly blossom, leaving the reader with a sense of fulfilment and enlightenment.
In the end, despite its occasional pacing hiccups, it's a story that reminds us of the importance of embracing our flaws and celebrating our triumphs. Through its pages, we are invited to embark on our journey of self-discovery.
This book was such an ode to the human experience.
There were high highs and low lows, and they were all expertly navigated and conveyed to the reader. Lyra and Alexis are both very real and raw characters, which makes it so much easier to invest yourself in their love story as the reader.
The author did an incredible job here in working with the ugliness real life sometimes affords, including homophobia, self harm (on page), and narcissistic partners.
I loved the complexity of Lyra as a character, how she takes care of everyone around her, and how that reflects on her self image. It was also great to watch her fall in love with so many pieces of life. Such a beautiful experience.
Alexis is a breath of fresh air in terms of watching someone wade through a literal lifetime of hurt and try to come out healthy on the other end. Following her and Lyra as they both learn to see themselves in a new light was so rewarding.
Lyra, Alex, and their bestie, Mindy, are my favorite parts of the book because they're sooooo not perfect. They're flawed, proud, and stubborn to a fault. Life can be messy and hard choices need to be made, and I love how the main characters needed to swallow some pride, admit their faults, and be open to change.
There are several real moments that any mom, friend, or ex could relate to ... and that's what makes this book amazing. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Tummies and bellies... I cringe a lot every time i read those words and in this book you re gonna find them a lot. Who talk like this? When I hear those words I imagine an old lady with thirty cats talking with a childish voice about their cute bellies and tummies. Funny thing, in this book there is also a character named Tammy. I can't seem to escapeeee. LOL Also I should say that I really didn't enjoy the sex scenes. The description was boring and I don't understand why those two were laughing while they were doing it. Or should I say that they were "grinning devilishly" and "smirking". 🙄
I have to say though that I didn't hate it. Its was sweet, with a lot of understanding and patience. This story was kind of flat for me and I never got to feel ecstatic reading it but I'm sure that a lot of people who like this soft and flat situation will be pleased.
My taste in books is a little strange. I want intense situations between the couple. I want to see them truly unhappy and bad for each other before they realise that they are in love. So when a books appears to be so sweet i lose intrest and i skip paragraphs.
This was a cute read, lots of angst, well written and interesting throughout. My only real complaint is that there were several points in this book that I just... didn't like Alexis. At the beginning, sure.. for obvious reasons, but also later. I felt myself suspending my disbelief because the chemistry that seemed to keep drawing Lyra and Alexis together never really seemed to manifest. None of their teenage years is written and all we have to go on is both characters sharing a mutual feeling that they were the loves of each other's lives. But when Alexis starts out as a jerk and continues to be avoidant and non-communicative throughout.. it left me wondering what Lyra even saw in her.
The kids also took a back seat through a LOT of the book, only casually mentioned as a reminder that they do exist. We see very little interaction between Lyra and these kids, so towards the end when Lyra is contemplating how much she loves these children and thinks of them as her own, I was just like.. "what??"
So, yeah. An enjoyable read if you can suspend some disbelief and don't mind some side characters kinda being forgotten a little.
I absolutely devoured this book and I was in no way ready for the journey this story took me on! I absolutely fell in love with Lyra and Alexis and as much as I couldn’t read fast enough to see how it all played out I didn’t want the story to end.
I felt all the pain, hope, despair and joy right along with the characters. It was so easy to relate to them and fall headlong into the story as it unfolded. Splashes of spice made it even more enjoyable and I recommend that everyone who is looking for a great sapphic romance to read this one!
Ivy Whitaker tells a tailspin of a story. We learn that communication is the key. It was beautifully emotional as both MCs had issues to resolve. There was a certain circumstance that did not get resolved nor mentioned by the other MC that should have been addressed, not ignored, as the scars would have been seen. It may be a trigger to some. There was a tough conversation that the MCs had with the children that was well done. This was angsty, back and forth. This is my first book by this author, I will continue to follow her.
I don’t know if there enough of the right words. This book touches on so many things. The writing brilliantly conveys each characters journey. I felt all the feels you want to in a truly remarkable book.
Alexis is so relatable as the wife and mother who knows she’s meant for something different. She never once regrets having her family, but knows that to give them a wonderful life she needs to be true to herself.
Lyra is so powerful, but after years of an emotionally abusive relationship she is locked in a world of doubt and fear.
I loved this book so much and can’t recommend enough.

I am so glad a friend of mine recommended this book! It’s not an easy read, there is pain and hardship but most importantly love! Lyra and Alex find their way back to each other. The road is broken and bumpy but they know the webs of the road will lead to a life they deserve! 5 🌟
There are so many expectations bound up in this book.
From a plot standpoint, our author heroine (Lyra, a name I absolutely love) flees sunny California for the rundown mid-Atlantic foothills of Pennsylvania when her sister falls victim to a stroke. Lyra tries to meet the expectations of being a devoted sister as best she can, while also trying to stave off what's expected of a multiple-time best-selling author after a flop (namely: Write more, better).
This, of course, is complicated when she runs into her childhood best friend/love, Alex. Alex has not only felt the weight of the expectations of others, she has flat-out surrendered to them. Her mother expected her to marry a man and live the life of a stay-at-home mom, and only upon reacquainting herself with the force that is Lyra does she start to realize the crushing burdens of those expectations.
This book felt challenging - In a good way, mind you! But by no means an easy or breezy read.
Part of that, I think, lay in the expectations on my part. Expectations affect everything we do, from consuming media to consuming food to how we relate to other people. If we have an expectation, even if we don't realize it ourselves, failing to have that expectation met can leave you feeling off-kilter, or disappointed.
To put it bluntly, I expected a simple sapphic romance. It's more than that! Better in many ways, with lyrical prose and extremely vivid depictions of emotions and connection. And certainly much deeper in terms of the difficult subject matter it deals with.
But in its (successful, in my eyes) aspirations to literary fiction, the novel's insistence on hitting some of the simplistic romance tropes felt forced. I think the book would have worked much better had it simply shed its romance-constrained plot points and just kept exploring and exposing its beating heart, which was otherwise mesmerizing.
Expectations are a double-edged sword. I've no doubt "sapphic romance" has some advantages for marketing purposes, and with that designation comes certain expectations. I just think this book is better than that, and I'm only sorry it seems to try shape itself to a form it has clearly outgrown.
All that said, this book is a lovely, wonderful piece of work. And I truly can't wait to see what the author will do next.
This review is for an advanced reader copy of the book, provided by the publisher.
Lyra, Alex, and their bestie, Mindy, are my favorite parts of the book because they're sooooo not perfect. They're flawed, proud, and stubborn to a fault. The book shows a really difficult confrontation with oneself. At least as far as Alex is concerned. It shows the inner struggles and decisions she has to make in order to put her own life first instead of always giving priority to the people in her life and their opinions. However, disappointment and loss always come with that and you have to be able to cope with that or simply ignore the love for yourself and the love of your life. It is a slow-burn, second chance love story about Alexis and Lyra, who fell deeply in love as teenagers and who went from being best friends to much more. They thought about forever! But bigotry and the rejection of Alexis' mother and family drove them apart. Lyra was able to escape the small town and became a successful author, but she is currently having real difficulties with writing and has to help her sister through an extremely difficult time. Lyra also has to take a close look at her own love life and make an important decision! Her ex is a thorn in her side! She takes over the dance school and is back home after several years. Everything develops really slowly and you want to strangle some people, but there are also sweet rays of hope and good friends! After so many years, Alex and Lyra still have tremendous chemistry that ignites as soon as they are in the same room. When the time finally comes to face the past, there are new hurdles to overcome. In some places it is a bit too long and there is too much inner monologue for my taste, but nevertheless intense and profound! Not an easy read, but very enjoyable and wonderfully written. Thanks to the Author for this ARC!
At the start this certainly isn’t a light frothy novel. At least one main is messy and not an easy person to like. For the first 10% I wasn’t sure, then the writer brought me on board with a bit of perspective. However, one main is married and although we know it is not ideal, he is not a bad man, or at least no worse than his partner is a bad woman. In fact from initial interactions, he is perhaps the better person. I know that many people find themselves hetro-married before they realise that is not their true path, but I personally find it an extra layer of tension and can’t really settle till I find how the author is handling that. Most novelists handle it well. I hope that is the case here, but until hope is replaced by fact….. I’m tense. I think I also struggled with the fact, although the sister was the catalyst in the return to the home town, she was very much off page. I think I had an issue with off page. The kids didn’t seem to feature, the husband didn’t seem to feature,,, The husband seems to be pretty decent. We are told a couple of criticisms, but from what we see he seems okay. What is also okay is that they separate so no cheating. The book is just over half way and I have. I idea how the author will pad out the remaining time. It may be self growth, but I’m okay with where the mains are and if I forgot to pick up the rest of the book, I wouldn’t be left wondering. Continuing on, there is the introduction of a non binary character and a bit of education around feeling a gender or none and biology doesn’t impact who you can be. All is wrapped up happily and neatly.
It's a story of an old love between two young women, one who seems to know who she is, the other is still searching. Hiding herself from the world.
I honestly love this. Every person who is part of the LGBTQIA have their own stories. Their own experiences. And unfortunately for many, they are not raised in a family who are so open and accepting. Many I presume grow up like Alexis. With judgmental parents who think the idea of Boys dancing is disgraceful.
This is a raw, beautiful story that has honestly left me speechless. It's clear to see that Ivy has poured her heart into this story and I for one am amazed, stunned and in love with everything that happened in this book.
Honestly… I have no other words to express my love. Ivy, as always you are perfect, your stories are perfect. Please give me more beautiful words to immerse myself in!
It was an interesting read about the rekindling romance between the author Lyra and the stay at home married mom Alex. They were best friends and lovers when young but all was broken off since Alex was not prepared to come out since their relationship was not accepted by her parents. After years being away Lyra is coming back home to help her family and thus they meet again. Alex really struggles but in the end she must admit that being with Lyra is what is right and her life must be changed in order for her to be happy.
The book was a bit long and it would have been great if more of deep dive in the feelings of the characters. Overall a good read though.
This book was excellent, it had everything a good book should have. Lyra returns to her hometown to help her sister with her business while her sister recovers. During this time she reconnects with her high school sweetheart who broke her heart in an attempt to live up to her family's bigoted expectations. Alex is not immediately likeable but she is relatable especially in my opinion to parents. It seems as though she has lost herself to parenthood as well as trying to live up to everyone's expectations. Lyra returning allows her to glimpse what it used to be like and that it is possible to be happy and feel alive. This book was an excellent slow burn and I really liked the way the author handled Alexis coming into and accepting herself for who she truly is.
Easily jumped into one of my top 10 favorite reads. I am 100% someone who avoids a slow burn but I COULD NOT stop reading. I love the perspective changes and character development. Alexis got very annoying and I didn’t want to like her character but I did, something about her made it hard for me to say “no, I don’t like this character”. Although narration changed between the two mains it seemed to be mostly told from Alexis. The only thing I did hope for throughout the book was Lyras parents being more present the way Miriam kept showing up. I would definitely read more about these two if a short story or something was written about their wedding.

This is a really good book which explores much further than two people falling in love and getting their happily ever after. There is much covering how anxiety affects people and the negative effects of miscommunication that can affect relationships. It makes you look deeper into what gender normatives we have in life and the little things that can be done to help change them, all wrapped up in a really well developed story. The author has a real knowledge of language and has a great way of expressing things. I really enjoyed reading it and would whole heartedly recommend it to others.
I am so impressed by this book, the way the characters grow into their true selves. In spite of the monster of a mother, and the freak of an ex they come together creating a beautiful family. This was the first book I’ve read by the author and it made me curious to read more.
One favorite quote from the book: "It’s never too late to live a life that makes you happy. It takes a lot of courage to get there. Even if it’s just… acknowledging it to ourselves."
