A woman with a knack for cheating death tries to avoid the mistakes of her past lives in the first book of a gripping dark fantasy series.

Death has a funny way of finding Lynette Heversham. After three villainous lifetimes—marked by pain, betrayal, and increasingly violent demises—Lynette still has no idea why she’s been cursed with being reborn again and again. When she awakens as her younger self for the fourth time, she quickly realizes this life is her last chance to get it right.

With the guidance of the gods, Lynette sets out to leave her wicked ways behind and forge a new path. Escaping her doomed engagement and the machinations of her adoptive noble family will be no easy task. As she courts scandal and shocks everyone by joining the empress’s army, she’s thrust into a world rife with demonic beasts and dangerous enemies.

The key to Lynette’s survival will be unlocking the long-ignored power in her core. For she’ll need her newfound skills, all the knowledge gained from her past lives, and the gods’ favor in order to change her fate . . .

Combining magic, romance, action, and spectacular world-building, Renewal is the first installment of a unique dark fantasy series that’s perfect for fans of otome and role-playing games.

This is an unexpected take on the genre. It has been said that a protagonist needs to be someone with both the motivation and ability to act. This MC has experienced multiple past lives where, for different good reasons within the setting, she signed away her autonomy to people who did not have her best interests at heart. This did not go so well for her. So the story starts at the beginning of another round where she is determined to not make the same mistakes again.

The story is a well written intrigue litrpg with just a hint of action. The MCs primary goals and antagonists are social in nature. But then the author introduces a x-factor, something out of left field that gets the MC to consider paths through social conflict that are the equivalent of flipping the table during a chess game.

There is an interesting element of religion in the naritive as well. She spends several lifetimes trying to go it alone, only to break down and go seek the assistance of the gods. This is of course what leads her to a different path. It is very subtle so other readers may see it more like Game Master intervention. Most litrpgs tend to treat gods like superheroes. This one feels more like a Joan of Arc type relationship with her god. I liked it.

All and all it was a great read and I can't wait for book 2.

Excited For The Next Book!

We meet her just before she dies; and that was the last unpermanent death she’ll get. When Lynette is killed, she awakens in the body of her younger self, with one final chance. In previous lives, her response to neglect and insidious abuse was lashing out, rebellion and revenge. This time, she’s determined to break the cycle. Trying to hold on to 100 years of experience without letting it - or the hormones of being 21, but at least she’s older than previous awakenings! - poison her last chance, she prays; and a goddess answers with a quest notification pop up. Join the army and survive the march to the city, and maybe things will get better - probably?

I liked it. There are definitely a couple of things that could be tweaked, but it’s a fun romp.

A Welcomed Change in LITRPG

Lynette’s tale is a delight to read in its’ finalized form - as someone who followed Renewal on RoyalRoad from its’ infancy, It is a welcomed sight to see it receive the attention that it deserves as well as Mrs. Rabone taking her first steps as a published author. I can’t wait to see how the story progresses.

i hate to do this because it seems like the book is rather new and has barely any reviews and ratings… but it was unbearable. it was repetitive, boring and grating. the cover is beautiful and captivating, so compliments. podium is probably going to call me a troll for this review.

i listened to the audiobook and i feel like reading a physical copy would have been better. bear with me. i liked the narrator but the way the main character spoke was so annoying. she was barely able to form an instant coherent sentence and constantly stuttered. therefore almost every conversation was in stuttered narration which made it… so annoying.

i really liked the premise and the beginning had me hooked. up to the point where she died and was respawned in her final life. she cowered and was horribly abused and i felt for her. but the abuse was so constant and repetitive to the point where i was like… all those people hate her so much and she is such an innocent and kind girl - somethings cooked here. and then we get her narration of how she was horrible to everyone around her, provoking everyone and causing scenes, lashing out and mistreating people left and right - but its all good now because that was the past :)
she is a grown woman now, at the age of 21 (i think?) that has lived 3 past lives where she got to age 28 or more. so i thought… wow does it really take 3 lives to become a halfway decent person?

more to the constant abuse and her not standing up for herself. i get it, she had very bad lives in the past and is still going tru it. it was grating. even worse when she remiscinded about how she was such a bitch to a girl that her own brother rage killed her and how proud she was that she can now admit how she bullied that girl and how she could have managed her own emotions better - GIRL - you might have died and respawned but everyone around you still thinks you are a raging bitch. it got tedious.

also strongly disliked the constant „character A likes u now -23 percent which is a decline of 3%“ it was grating. sis had conversations and that shit got narrated like every second sentence in. its so lazy and… just use words?? show hoe character A behaves and reacts to what is said?? i knoe this is like Rpg related but?? pls no

that being said i actually tried to root for her and liked the „big reveal“ of her plan at the end but she was just so… annoying. a weak, meek and simpering character who is supposed so innocent and kind suddenly switches and exactly knows how to verbally hurt the characters around her and how to provoke them in a way that made me shake my head - something doesnt add up. like when she stood up for herself i cheered but it just felt like a mean girl having cosplayed as a awkward and helpless damsel in distress for the last 8 hours straight. it felt disingenuous

total teen drama.
Unlike most time loops, you would assume our protagonist would be more centered, knowledgeable and skilled. She wasn't and the reason to it was because she abused; which makes it harder for the reader to connect with story. In each life time, the MC's agency was somewhat taken away. From her abusive family and her husband. To combat this, for her last life, our protagonist ran to the military who oddly enough...basically does the same thing. The reason why she is running away from her family, is because no one believes her. She gets wrongly punished and she lashes out. It becomes a vicious cycle of step-family not believing her after her constant outburst.
What the character is is sad. She experiences three lifetime of abuse as someone who is adopted, ignored and abused. Which is why, she acts as a emotionally wounded victim, flinching at every encounter. This isn't a story of hero, with actual knowledge of the future. Unlike other time loops, she doesn't use it to cheat her way to the top. No, it's more a survivor who is actually clueless with everything that is going on. What is worse, she is 21 yet acts 16. The MC isn't a mature character..in fact, pretty much everyone is a petty and short sighted in the book. This is a TEEN novel filled with sad angst and anguish.

Renewal kept me engaged from the beginning. The "time loop"/"being reborn into her earlier life again and again" didn't play as much of a part as I hoped. But it was understandable per the plot because she chose a vastly different path than her previous three lives. She's supposedly learned a lot of skills from those lives, including some emotional maturity that alters her outlook. The blurb made it sound like she was actively villainous in her other lives instead of impulsive, and emotionally unstable.

This is a fantasy book about a land of people with magical powers. It isn't a realistic book. But I thought it kept the suspense coming and presented the magical system organically. The main character does succeed largely because of luck and her magical mentor, but I was fine with believing her magical regeneration meant she had powers working behind the scenes to get her where they want her in this reincarnation.

There are many questions left unanswered. The progress she made in her relationships with her brothers, and acquaintances seemed to be two steps forward, one step back. I'm very curious where the story is going after this, but also braced for a fair amount of angst.

Good enjoyable story only diminished by the lack of trust on the reader to keep in mind the traumatic past of the MC. The circular monologue of the MC trauma becomes tedious and skimming becomes a must but detracts from the enjoyment. I truly hope the author can overcome this in the second book.

Holy woke garbage batman. The woe is me crap would be bad enough but even without that, the amount of woke garbage mixed in for the sake of being woke, really ruins what substance the story MIGHT have.

Not so much LITRPG as fantasy. Interesting premise. Looking forward to reading more.

It is worth the read, if you like LitRPG type novels. I thoroughly enjoy it and look forward to Book Two. Will the protagonist survive the army? Will she be able to break her engagement?

Fucking Young Adult. LABEL YOUR DAMN BOOKS CORRECTLY YOU USELESS TWAT WAFFLES!

I purchased 3 books and this is the 2nd one with unbelievable situations. Like the author really wanted to drill it in your head that the poor sweet FC did no wrong and everyone around her hated her for no apparent reason other than we are in the head of this poor delicate misunderstood FC. 🎻🎻🎻

The author tries to reeeealllly forcefully make you believe this, to the point where it became laughable. The self depreciating thoughts of the FC became unbearable that I’m sure I started losing hair from the irritation it caused.

Like “oh well, nobody likes me so I don’t need to stand up for myself. It won’t matter anyways! Let them poison my food. It’s fine!”. Girl, take care of your own destiny like nobody is going to do it for you?!?

Oh wait. I take that last part back. Here comes the sexy MC on his graceful stead to save our poor pitiful heroine! 🦸‍♀️

I just can’t with these YA simple books.
