At first, it appears to be a terrorist attack — a mysterious sound decimates society’s sense of hearing, leaving the world deaf. But as this extraordinary event unfolds, it becomes clear that something of an unknown magnitude is at work, with a purpose to destroy.
Hours away from transferring custody, divorced mother Jules finds herself trapped in a remote farmhouse with her daughter, miles from help and without communication. Stranded and facing an unseen threat, Jules must use her remaining senses to keep her child safe. But how do you survive what you can’t hear or see coming?
Reminiscent of the heart-pounding suspense and terror of “The Haze” and the parental instinct to protect in the bestselling novel “The Aging,” "The Last Sound" is a gripping tale of a mother's fierce love and determination to protect her child, no matter the cost. This edge-of-your-seat thriller will leave you breathless and haunted long after the last page.

I really enjoyed this book. Of course it needs a sequel, because there were so many questions unanswered. I'm sure you are working on that right this minute. So I don't want to slow you down. Just keep in mind that I'm older than dirt, and could be dead before you finish it. So get busy and happy writing! Debra Brashear
I love me some Jack Hunt. Dude's great at drawing me way deep into his stories and wastes no time doing so. This story was no different. The premise of some unseen, invisible force causing the entire world to go deaf was refreshingly original, going into a direction I never suspected (but was pleasantly surprised to discover). The imagery was properly brutal, grotesque, and violent (though admittedly at times hard to visualize), and the characters were believable and personable. My attention was seized almost immediately. It was an easy read that held my attention the entire way.
But alas, there were still weaknesses. Why both Goodreads and Amazon advertise the Kindle edition as 238 pages when my Kindle showed only 174 pages, I'll never know, but that's what it is, and it warrants a mention. It's short and it FEELS short, especially considering the major events taking place that I for one think needed more TLC to develop. Because of this, the story as a whole feels a bit rushed and incomplete. I can appreciate Jack Hunt's afterward in explaining that this story's point is the relationship between mother and daughter, but I for one wanted a bit more than that.
My last complaint feels so petty, but... given that it's a dominant feature of this book, it MUST be said. But that darn portrayal of communication amongst all the newly deaf characters was problematic. While writing or texting made total sense, being overly descriptive on almost all occasions (including harrowing ones) did NOT. It simply isn't believable for people to write: "I had no choice but to hide in the basement because if I didn't then I would have been spotted and that wouldn't have been good," when instead they could write: "Hid in basement to be safe." It would have been far more realistic for folks to adopt a "short-hand" version of communicating.
Overall, though, I had a good time with this one, despite wishing there was more to it than what I had. I have no clue if there will be a sequel at all, as the ending could work in either direction. But if Jack DOES continue the story, then I for sure will be there.
honestly wasn't going to read this book. Even after reading the too brief sample I wasn't totally convinced, but I was intrigued. I purchased the book & the next thing I knew I was 70% in! It was such a fast-paced, fun yet terrifying read! I'm very glad I read it & can't wait to see if there is more. I want to see what happens when tech fully fails. I want to see what happens to the characters or others in this world. This is a new twist on apocalyptic world ending event, & I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Within a glut of End Days books, this one takes a refreshing detour away from the standard threats. Well written monsters, just enough detail to set the imagination to work, the characters are believable. My only critique is the LONG dialogs supposedly written out on paper before the cell app came Into play. Just not feasible. Great book, looking forward to more from this author.
I like everything Jack Hunt writes! This book had me holding my breath sometimes without realizing I was doing it. The characters are fleshed out enough to care about what happens to them, without so much as to take away from the story. I highly recommend this book and all the others this author has written. You will not be disappointed!
I was not sure what to expect with this short book. The first part drags just a little as we "meet" Jules, who initially is not terribly appealing, but with the back story (which is belabored a bit later), is more understandable. When the attack/disaster begins, I didn't know what was going on so the suspense was there, but in later reflection, the creatures were everywhere, so why did Jules and Ella have so long with nothing attacking them? The physics person in me was a bit miffed that CERN is some how the source of the creatures, but OK. There were some other issues that bothered me. Jules is a long-term alcoholic and you simply don't go sober without some significant physical symptoms, yet other than occasionally wanting a drink, she seemed to have none. I thought the usage of the phones to communication via voice-to-text was clever, but found the messages to be more detailed and involved than I think people in danger would convey. They would just get the important points out and not something that sounds like a full dialogue of a play. Overall, I did enjoy the story, hence the 4 stars.
If humanity survived, it would be chewing over these questions for centuries. But would humanity survive? How many others would learn about their weakness to cold temperatures before it was too late?
When a brutal sexual assault occurs to someone, their minds will often shut down to protect themselves but alone their loved ones. Jules Emerson was home alone with her nine year old daughter when a masked man entered their house and assaulted their at knife point. With threats of returning and handing her daughter, Jules reluctantly took the assault and confused in he disbelieving husband when he returned from a business meeting. Forced to acknowledge he didn't believe her, she turned to drinking to numb the pain and fear she still felt while Derek turned fo fellow coworker Melonie to fill his voids. Refusing sex and with emotional intimacy all but gone, he would leave her at her lowest and force the courts hands to grand him full custody of their none year old daughter Ella. Knowing she had an addiction that cost her career, her marriage and lastly her daughter, she was set to begin an eighteen month rehab in hopes of getting her custody reinstated. The day she was set to drop her off with her father, a horrible ear splitting sound would ruin the entire trip and cause her to lose control of the vehicle. Battered and bloody from the crash, her daughter faired far worse with a horribly broken ankle and foot. Realizing quickly they are all dead from the sound, they now have to struggle for survival as invisible monsters are hunted and killing them.
“No matter what you feel. Don’t move or make a sound.”
With her daughter rigged close behind her, Jules makes it to a farm house where shes greeted by the older woman. Beatrice who quickly welcomed them inside. Learning the creatures hate cold, they take shelter in the air conditioned house while they wait for her son Liam to return from town. When Beatrice ventured outside to look into starting her late husband's car, she would be swept away by a monster and killed. Hiding in the basement and trying to get through to emergency services, she's shocked when Liam actually makes it there and together try and fortify what they can of the home. As she makes a run to the gas station up the road, she meets Sam and he would later turn up at their doorstep needing help. Badly I hired from the stack, he would die later on as he created a distraction for the others to make it to the van. Making a pot stop to check in on Liam's four children would end in heartache as he saw the severed remains scattered around the family home. Alone with just her daughter, she would be taken in by a band of military survivors and would be forced to stay as they treat her and her daughter. When she met Deb and finally had the opportunity to leave sjr would jump on the chance but unfortunately she was so mentally disturbed she never knew the threat. Having had her own daughter murdered by the monsters, she sabotaged the air conditioning at the fire station to offer the escape. After having Ella kidnapped, she would stop at nothing to get her daughter back, even if she had to kill for her.
This book had a lot of potential—the premise is definitely interesting: a mysterious sound decimates everyone’s hearing and leaves the world deaf. Terrorist attack? Something else? And the narrative follows divorced mom Jules, who’s bringing her daughter to her ex-husband before entering court mandated rehab as a stipulation to regain custody of their daughter, Ella.
Unfortunately, at under 200 pages, the reader isn’t given enough to flesh out this story. We’re told that the entire world has been left deaf, but we only see a snippet though Jules, who I think is in Illinois (I can’t even remember). There’s brief speculation though a minor character of how/why the attack happened in the first place, but I couldn’t help but wish for more. And the afterword said more about Jules’s alcoholism and PTSD than it ever felt present in the actual book.
Additionally, and apologies for the harshness, but the writing really failed to pull me in. It was so repetitive (I wanted to throw my Kindle after what felt like the hundredth “unseen”).
The premise of the book is what made me want to read it. However, there are major issues with various parts of the book. Most of them revolve around missing information. I had hoped that the author would have developed the book more than what it is. if you are looking for a quick, somewhat suspenseful read, you might enjoy this. If you can neglect the obvious missing parts, you might be happy with this reid.
This was very intense (for me anyway), and kept my interest throughout. I could only read it in small parts for it produced a great amount of anxiety for me, but for someone else it might not be that potent. I did feel that the ending was too abrubt and really they should have died on the first day, but then where would the story be?
I enjoyed most of this book. I skipped over most of Jules flashbacks of what caused her to become an alcoholic/ending of her marriage, because I found it not that interesting, (-1 star). The rest of the book kept me on the edge of my seat. This was my first book by this author. I will be reading more of his books!
I am a fan of Jack Hunt. I have read many of his series, but decided I was in the mood for a stand alone. Love a story that makes you think! Fast paced with a main character I could identify with. As horrible as the enemy is, figuring out how to fight it was fascinating!
Loved this book, the character's and the creature's. The metaphor wasn't lost on me and I highly enjoyed it. A quick read too quick that left me wanting more. I love it when an author allows readers to join in the story with our imagination to fill in the rest. I choose to make it a happy ending. I highly recommend this book.
The love between a mother and her daughter is shown to be strong enough to face terrible circumstances. Invisible alien monsters have robbed humans of their hearing. Hero’s fall over and over to save the life of one desperate and wounded mother as she fights to get her nine year old child the medical care she needs.
The beginning of this book is learning about the main character of this story and how she got to this point, then she is bombarded with the impossible task of fighting for her and her daughters life against things that she can't see or even hear !
Really? Fire extinguishers to the rescue? This concept made me LOL. I generally enjoyed this book but the author should’ve done more homework on alcoholism. The depiction here is not how a rock bottom alcoholic would react in such a situation. I wanted to know more about the creatures.

The Last Sound grabs you from the beginning. You're drawn into the lives of Jules and Ella and can't stop. I've stayed up much too late. And hope the story is continued.
I enjoyed the book, but not as much as Mr. Hunt's series books. The ending was inadequate in my opinion, and left no indication as to any resolve of the situation. Very unsettling, perhaps that's what the author intended.
An action packed cross between The Quiet Place and Predator. Once it gets going, it really doesn’t stop; although the ending was a bit abrupt and ambiguous. It would be cool if the author did another book focused on this particular plot line.
The Last Sound moves along at a quick pace, but it leaves one with so many questions. Also, there are several silly mistakes in the book. It needed a good editor. Don’t waste your time.
Avid reader, but this book has been the best I've read in ages. The plot takes twists and turns with the believable characters facing unbelievable horrible evil. Was so hoping for a sequel with same characters. Will certainly reccomend.
I love this book. It was fast paced reading and I couldn’t put it down. However, I feel there should be a second book. The ending was abrupt, that left me wanting to read more.
The author is one of the best post apocalyptic authors. I don’t feel that I am constantly thinking, “There is no way this could happen”. Always a great read!
