Syint must face her first day as a Velutran Crusher. She must confront the primordial malice of Chaos as she attempts to destroy one of its cosmos-devouring Black Hearts. A perilous task that will test not only her physical might but also her mental fortitude. Failure means death or, worse, madness.
Born and raised in Australia, Calum Lott is the science-fantasy author of a Dirge For Cascius, Arkoma, and the series My Mortal Memories, all set in the vast Valsollas galaxy. His greatest inspirations are the video game Bloodborne, the manga Berserk and The Lord of the Rings. In his spare time, you'll find Calum adequately playing the guitar, reading at a snail's pace, watching movies (LOTR over and over), annoying his gorgeous partner or sitting at his laptop writing stories whilst getting a sore arse.
I'm taking a bit of a dive into reading more indie works and today, I treated myself to Calum Lott's short stories which are set in the galaxy of Valsollas, the world of his upcoming novel. The short stories are available for free via the author's newsletter and more are coming!
Crushers thrusts the reader right into the middle of the action, along with names and terminology, and sweeps you along for the ride. It's so short that there's no point in my telling much more than the blurb already says, but I will say that I enjoyed it. You get a feel for the universe and some of its core concepts (I'm guessing anyway). But what I really adored were some of the descriptions that gave me cosmic horror vibes and touched upon a bit of existential dread. Overall, a fascinating intro to Valsollas!
