This is a wonderful historical fiction story that begins with a young man who had just graduated college in prewar Japan and follows him and his struggles to fatherhood and starting his own enterprise. The characters are all relatable and interesting the romance and action are well paced. This is a relaxing read that will warm your heart. Don Davenport weaves in the lesser known history of prewar japan such as steel shortages, labor issues, and industrializing factories to tell a fast paced story about love, rescue, danger and economics. I came for the protagonist Toshi, but I couldn't put the pages down for the even more impressive side characters such as the former Samurai Empress. This is a book I highly recommend to anyone who loves history and wants a piece of the era that is not focused on war.
