For Years, The term ‘Samurai’ has been shrouded in myths and legends. Samurai; A warrior caste that came to rule Japan for centuries, with soldiers who would give their lives based on the mythical code of Bushido (Bushido—"the way of the warrior"—a complex code of conduct embracing ideals of honor and loyalty that continues to govern the Japanese way of life even today)
A History of the Samurai attempts to tell the complete story of Japan's legendary warrior class from the beginning to the end—an epic tale of bravery and honor but also of conspiracies and carnage. The book attempts to separate the real history of the Samurai from the myths and legends and succeeds in it.
The book is a chronological history of Japan from the 11th Century to the 20th century, focusing mainly on the Samurai. Each chapter focuses on a specific person or moment. The book takes a look at some of the greatest warriors in Japanese history including Miyamoto Musashi, Minamoto Yoshitsune, Takeda Shingen, Oda Nobunaga Tomoe Gozen, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and many more. Apart from the history of the Samurai, the book also explores some forgotten chapters in Japanese history like the Japanese invasions of Korea, Japanese missions to Europe, and Japanese relations to European powers.
The book traces the fascinating story of the rise and fall of these enigmatic warriors throughout Japanese history. The book is illustrated with several rare photos and documents which only enrich the book. At the end of the book, a complete bibliography, a chronology of Japan, a list of emperors are also included.
Overall, the book does a good job. Japanese history is a lot complex, given the several clans and factions, so it may still prove difficult to grasp it all. The book does a stellar job in narrating the history of Japan through the context of its Samurai class. If you are interested in Japan and its history, this book is a great read.

Un recorrido muy ameno por parte de la historia japonesa, de la mano de la figura de los samuráis, que me ha dejado con la sensación de haber descubierto mucho y también con ganas de investigar más sobre personajes, batallas o épocas que especialmente han llamado mi atención.
Pensaba que el libro estaría más enfocado solamente al guerrero samurái, pero el autor sabe hilar perfectamente el contexto en el que surge y desarrolla este ‘mito’ actual. Si tuviera que destacar algo sería que, pese a tratarse de un libro que se ciñe a lo histórico, no se hace aburrido o denso en ningún momento. La forma de narrar los hechos, así como el intercalar explicaciones en recuadros hacen que la lectura sea interesante en todo momento.
De esta forma, vamos aprendiendo tanto de los samuráis como del contexto que los rodea y como este hace que tengan que evolucionar.
Sin duda muy recomendable a todo aquel que sienta curiosidad por la cultura japonesa y por su historia.

Me cuesta muchísimo leer historia, pero es que este libro lo disfruté muchísimo.

The perfect introduction to the history of the samurai, separating the romanticized myth from the historical facts. The only downside is that it breezes through different eras so fast, it's hard to remember who's who and who did what. Other than that, it is highly recommended to anyone who is fascinated by the samurai and Japanese history of the era.

If you are interested in Japan and it's history, this book is a must. I have it in spanish and wanted to read it in English to see if there was a loss in translation, which is none.
It' will make you a clear image of the REAL samurai and not the Hollywood version or the Bushido version of it.

La única pega he sido yo. Ha habido algunos capítulos que me han resultado complejos por mis carencias históricas de la historia de Japón.

Ameno e interesantísimo ensayo sobre los samuráis y, en consecuencia, la historia de Japón, separando perfectamente la historia del mito pero siempre con pasión e información. Un ensayo divulgativo que se devora y despierta el interés para conocer más de este fascinante país que es Japón.

Fantástico libro que consigue explicar de forma sencilla la compleja história de los samuráis. Muy recomendable para todo aquel que sienta interés por la historia de Japón.
Como gran aficionado a la cultura japonesa, sentía un hueco grande al desconocer todo este pasado histórico que ahora, gracias al libro de Jonathan López-Vera, no sólo he conseguido cubrir sino que me ha abierto el interés por querer profundizar mucho más. En mi próxima visita a Japón, seguro que llevaré conmigo este libro, para revisar y consultar interesantes hechos históricos que sin duda hubiese querido conocer en mis anteriores viajes, en el momento de visitar castillos o museos.
Como gran aficionado a la cultura japonesa, sentía un hueco grande al desconocer todo este pasado histórico que ahora, gracias al libro de Jonathan López-Vera, no sólo he conseguido cubrir sino que me ha abierto el interés por querer profundizar mucho más. For anyone looking for the history, the real history of the Samurai, look no further. This book had everything I wanted and more. It is a general history of the rise and fall of the mythological warriors and I mean very general. Yes, it goes into ancient battles, great lords and great deeds but this history stretches no less than 7 centuries. For a more concise history on certain events and/or people I recommend other authors. This book is for the everyday Joe Schmo, not history students or historians. It’s very basic and highlights only the necessary people and events that took place over centuries. With all that being said, it’s truly a great book. A majority of people across the globe have the same idea about the Samurai. After reading this you will realize how mistaken you really were. It’s utterly fascinating and I hope more people are curious, just as I was, about the real story…the Samurai

Un gran trabajo que cuenta de forma amena y comprensible (importante dada la complejidad de muchos episodios) toda la historia de la clase samurái, desde su aparición como tal hasta su disolución. No apto para los que quieran ahondar en el mito romantizado que ha llegado de los samuráis hasta nuestros días, pero muy recomendable para quien quiera profundizar en la apasionante historia de esta clase guerrera, desde los datos que se conocen en el mundo académico y la comprensión del contexto en el que se desarrolló.

a very easy read for a book with “the history of x” in the title, but it was written with the everyday reader in mind (instead of some serious student of history). the samurai stories are so full of drama that it makes for a fascinating read in any case.

The book fulfills its purpose as it enlightens you about the history of Japan, using the history of samurais as the lens to understand the sociopolitical events that built Japan as we know it. It leaves the reader wanting for more.

In the long history of Japan, the most famous, if not the most famous, is the "samurai". They appear in movies, and they appear in games. However, there are not many people who have a solid understanding of that samurai and know their history. So I hope that by reading this book, people will understand the old Japanese culture of the samurai and improve their view of the world.

Con este libro he tenido sentimientos encontrados:
Por un lado, no ha sido lo que me esperaba. Esperaba muchos más detalles sobre los samuráis, cuando en realidad el libro es un repaso por la historia de Japón en las etapas en que la clase guerrera tuvo un papel más importante (desde Heian a Meiji, más o menos), sin entrar demasiado en otros aspectos de la historia como la evolución cultural, religiosa o tecnológica. El problema es que no se pueden separar unas cosas de otras, así que en ocasiones se entra en explicaciones de cosas no estrictamente samurais para luego no profundizar en más detalle en las cosas que sí son de ellos.
Por otro lado, destacar lo bien trabajo que está el texto, se nota bien investigado (con un montón de referencias bibliográficas al final) y bien escrito. La lectura es muy amena y ligera (en parte, como digo, porque no me parece que se adentre en profundidad en nada en concreto), pero sobre todo destacar el esfuerzo del autor por ceñirse a los datos históricos y evitar todo lo posible la mitificación tan asociada con los samuráis y dando una visión bastante escéptica de los hechos (por ejemplo, ).
Creo que es un buen libro para iniciarse, o repasar, la historia básica de Japón, tanto por su ligereza como por el abordaje crítico de los hechos, pero también me parece que el título puede confundir las expectativas del lector.
Ah, y para terminar, la edición de Satori es tan buena como siempre, ligera, con buena letra y un montón de ilustraciones tanto en blanco y negro como a color.

A decent introduction to the history of Japan's warrior class for the non-academic reader.
However, the book does have its ups and downs:
The author, who clearly is enamored with the subject, is more at home in 16th century warrior history, and restricted his research for the other segments to non-Japanese scholarship. As a result, the book ends up being uneven, with the second half of the book being significantly better researched than the former. (My personal high point was the chapter of an entourage of samurai venturing towards Rome: I am not aware of any other place you can read about this episode.)
Most unfortunate is that he introduced some very basic, factual, mistakes to a few segments. These are not necessarily destroying the entire narrative, but should be corrected. That it is the Kamakura chapter which is suffering the most from this - especially his statements on Gotoba are delving into the nonsensical at times - is unfortunate, since it's the early, not the later chapters which form the first impression (but hey, it did get better!).
Personally, I found it also disappointing that the author effectively omitted the history of warriors elites before the founding of the first shogunate, despite professional warrior elites emerging in the 10th century. It is this pre-shogunate period which often gets shafted in such introductions, requiring the interested reader to fall back to the more academically-inclined works of Karl Friday or William Wayne Farris.
Lastly, the editor in charge could have put a bit more work into punctuation: the writing doesn't flow naturally in too many places, giving away its origins as a foreign language manuscript.
To conclude, I would suggest a healthy dose of scepticism when reading the first four chapters (and, ideally, go look elsewhere for a better account of these), but otherwise the book does its job of being an introduction to the history of the Japanese warrior class.

Reseña completa en El peso del aire
Mitos y leyendas. Cultura popular. Sí, en esa base se ha construido nuestra imagen de los guerreros samuráis. Soldados que darían su vida basados en el mítico código del bushido. Una casta guerrera que llegó a gobernar Japón durante siglos. Pero, ¿qué hay de cierto en la leyenda? ¿Qué hay de mito en la realidad? Tenemos entre nuestras manos un volumen único y especial precisamente por estar escrito desde el academicismo y el punto de vista de un historiador que se ha basado solo en evidencia histórica. Se trata de Historia de los samuráis, de Jonathan López-Vera (Satori, 2016) Cuando estudias historia (como en mi caso) en la universidad te enseñan que hay cosas que han sido “interpretadas” y otras que “son” así. Cartas, cuadros, piezas de arte, etc, son evidencias históricas interpretables. Pero la evidencia histórica es mucho más complicada. Asegurar al 100% que algo existió y ocurrió de cierta forma suele ocurrir en muy pocas ocasiones. En cualquier caso, Jonathan López-Vera firma en Historia de los samuráis un tremendo ensayo sobre la historia que se puede probar y demostrar de los samuráis, la que ha conformado ese magnífico país llamado Japón.

well written, well researched, concise. i don't always read the preface & intro but this time i would highly suggest it.
The writer says in the intro, "..a book about the history of the samurai, meant for the general public and not specifically for historians or history students."(in other words enough information that doesn't go into the minute/small details and an overview summary so that the reader knows has learned more about the subject) and i thought it was exactly that. for me, it worked.
i felt better informed on this subject in which i'm interested in.
the negative is that there is a lot of info & a lot of names to keep track of.
i would recommend this to those who are interested in Japan & it's history as well as samurai's.

Un libro estupendo para iniciarte, no solo en la historia de los samurai, sino en la historia de Japón, que está obviamente ligada a la de esta casta militar.
Tardé muy poco en leerlo porque está muy bien escrito, contado y se hace muy ameno y entretenido a la par que informativo.
En mi opinión, una de las mejores opciones para acercarse a la historia de Japón y la de los samurai más en concreto.

I was curious about Japanese and samurai history. I had read about it but not an ambitious a project as the one presented in this book. It is not the best decision I have made. Although the book is well documented, it remains a mixture of a historical novel and a not complete history book in any sense. Probably with less biases a higher level can be reached.

Here's what I got. The Samurai were soldiers. They started out serving the Emperor. They then became powerful in their own way. But that was hard to get. The author kept talking about the history of Japan through wars and battles as different people kept attempting - sometimes winning, sometimes not, to seize control of the throne.
But that wasn't the book I wanted. I didn't want to read about battle after battle. Yes, there were samurai fighting but it was so many names and it got confusing. It was definitely an author who knows and loves his subject but fails to realize how beginner some of his readers were.
I just, I just hated this book.

Libro necesario para quien quiera iniciarse en el mundo samurái y sobre todo en la historia de Japón. Me parece un libro muy puntual y nada rimbombante. Está escrito de una forma sencilla pero a su vez con ese tono que caracteriza al autor. Y por supuesto nada soporífero. Hay quien dice que se queda escueto, yo no lo veo así porque es imposible escribir sobre siete siglos de historia. Si te interesa leer algo más y puntual pues tienes mucha bibliografía que incluye el autor. Además, hay muchas tesis disponibles en la web para descargar y disfrutar y, sobre todo, para informarte mejor de algo puntual. Gracias a este libro quiero seguir investigando sobre cuestiones de las que habla el autor. Ya tengo varias lecturas pendientes, de hecho.

While I will not remember all the battles and important names, this book gave me a great overview of the rule of the samurai. I appreciate the work and research Lopez-Vera put into this book. I loved when he explored the myth of the samurai in relation to facts.
I think I had hoped for more content on the day-to-day lives of the members of this social class. This book does go into some of the contributions to the arts, and what else these folks did instead of warfare, but only very briefly. If you are hoping for an explanation of the queer relationships in the samurai structure you will not find it here. But, one can't cover everything.
Obviously based on my rating I enjoyed this reading very much.

Magnífica i amena introducció a la Historia dels Samurais (i com a tal a la història del Japó). Feia temps que buscava un llibre aixi que sense ser gens dens t'endinsa en l'apassionant món d'aquests guerrers que van governar un pais amb una història tan diferent a la nostra com va ser la del Japó. Molt recomanat. Sens dubte si l'autor treu mes llibres els compraré. La edició tambe es genial plena de esquemes o cuadres informatius dels personatges que van apareixent. A més el autor és un magnífic sensei, si os interesa el tema assistiu a alguna de les seves xerrades o dels seus cursos, aprendreu moltisim.

A mí me parece que este libro de divulgación a propósito de los samuráis es fantástico. Tal vez, pero esto es más una cuestión personal, la estructura no lineal que toma el autor para contar hechos históricos me parece rebuscada y no del todo necesaria. Sin embargo, la distinción que realiza López-Vera es justo lo que se necesitaba para abordar esta figura desde una perspectiva histórica: saber cuándo tenemos evidencia documental fiable para apoyar nuestras afirmaciones... y cuando estamos hablando desde el mito (entendido como la interpretación a posteriori de eventos históricos con una finalidad moralizante o política). En el caso de los samuráis, esta distinción resulta vital.

Como el título bien indica, este ensayo cuenta de manera breve y fácil de entender para todo tipo de lector la historia de los samuráis, desde sus inicios hasta la inevitable caída.
Me ha gustado mucho la estructuración de la narración, con unos pequeños insertos de vez en cuando para explicar quien fue tal o cual personaje o alguna pequeña historia tangencial a la principal.
Muy recomendable para empezar en este tema.

[Se lo recomiendo…] ¡Deslumbrante! Me ayudó a conocer más sobre una figura apasionante del Japón: los samuráis. Bien relatado, llega a emocionar, sobre todo, cuando hay batallas y sus desenlaces. Me gustó que el párrafo final de cada capítulo sintetiza lo anterior y conecta con el que se viene. Y me encantó que diferencie la historia del mito del samurái.
Con este libro, ya me doy una idea y una mayor consciencia de mis antepasados samuráis.

Libro que relata la auténtica Historia de Japón, en especial sobre los Samuráis. Nada que ver con la imagen que tenemos de los Samuráis de las películas o series de TV.

Lectura amena y ordenada con mucha coherencia. Aunque hay muchos nombres, está todo muy bien planteado para que no se te vayan olvidando los más importantes. Los cuadros con información adicional a lo largo del libro cuentan historias, datos, anécdotas y aclaraciones muy interesantes que enriquecen la experiencia de lectura.
