Ever since I found Ran and the Grey World years ago I've had a predilection for Aki Irie's works. It's not that her stories are impeccable or developed to perfection, but there's a warmth in them that I find inspiring.
With these short stories, it was particularly easy to tell why: she takes any sort of premise that occurs to her, and just draws it. It's a great example of how you don't need to an impeccable idea to write a story that tells something, and works. Most of these are random free-spirited tales, each with an entirely different tone and pace. None feel obliged to keep a structure of opening, development and ending: Irie writes whatever she wants to write (something that came to her going for a walk, or visiting a museum, as she describes later) and the resulting stories are somehow like vibrant, little experiences, when read.
The last section of this compilation book consists of illustrations of the work of other authors, or promotional illustrations for her own. Initially I didn't enjoy this part as much but eventually the way she takes any character and gives them her own charisma had once again my admiration. These are also printed in dark blue ink, which definitely grants them a different mood.
I also love how with a few simple pen strokes she gets full features and expressions. No doubt the drawing is also her forte, particularly with these short stories that need to be told in only a few vignettes.
It was particularly heartwarming that, in the closing pages, she writes that she loves to draw great things based on small stories, and also that she hoped Tabi was a means to discover something beautiful in the midst of the daily hustle. That's exactly what I had felt while reading.

Volume stupendo. Aki Irie è abile a coniugare storie interessanti a disegni (soprattutto di paesaggi) che comunicano emozioni difficili da esprimere a parole.
Alcuni racconti sono cortissimi, di una o due pagine, mentre altri sono un po' più lunghi. Sono molto diversi tra loro ma mantengono tutti quello stile particolare e la stessa atmosfera, dove viene celebrata la magia nella quotidianità e la quotidianità nella magia.
Una nota di merito va a "Il viaggio di Toki", il racconto più lungo rappresentato anche nella copertina del volume. Una bambina (Toki, per l'appunto) e il suo maestro affrontano un percorso difficile per arrivare alla tomba della madre di lei. Una specie di scalata del monte Everest ricca però di magia e che comprendiamo appieno solo alla fine. Due pagine in particolare mi sono rimaste impresse perché rendono benissimo quanto piccoli siano i due personaggi rispetto alla vastità della natura e del viaggio che affrontano, come a ricordarci che anche maghi e personaggi fantastici possono poco di fronte all'immensità del mondo che li circonda.
Penso che il volume sia ottimo per avvicinarsi al mondo di Aki Irie e capire l'essenza delle storie che tende a raccontare. Unica pecca che riesco a trovare è il prezzo (€14) che ahimè trovo un po' alto, nonostante il volume si confezionato splendidamente e più grande di un solito fumetto.

Colección de relatos cortos de Aki Irie (Ran y el Mundo Gris, Sigue las nubes al nor-noroeste) muy chulos, cuya concepción se define al final del libro, y con el dibujazo tan característico de la autora. Algunos son tremendamente buenos y dejan con ganas de más. Al terminar hay también una sección con ilustración y otros dibujitos que hizo de manera conmemorativa y/o por la salida de algún manga (incluso para los que no son obras suyas. Los de Dorohedoro son maravillosos).

Una raccolta di storie brevi che mi conferma di apprezzare Aki Irie, soprattutto quando non si occupi di Ran - il suo personaggio più famoso. I racconti sono ben equilibrati e forse il mio preferito è stato il secondo, in cui vediamo animarsi un albero di pino. Come spesso accade non mi sono piaciuti tutti, ma nell'insieme mi sono goduta la lettura del volume.

Hay historias que estan muy bien pero otras bajan el nivel, como es habitual en las antologías. Tiene un trazo muy limpio
