Jill Stengl is the author of numerous romance novels including Inspirational Reader’s Choice Award- and Carol Award-winning Faithful Traitor, and the bestselling novella, Fresh Highland Heir. She lives with her husband in the beautiful Northwoods of Wisconsin, where she enjoys her three cats, teaching a high school English Lit. class, playing keyboard for her church family, and sipping coffee on the deck as she brainstorms for her next novel.
Overdone literary plot of young rich girl being betrothed for marriage purposes in Revolutionary war times to someone she *believes* is a scoundrel, but he's really a spy playing a particular part. She falls for both the cloaked 'spy', as well as the scoundrel gentleman, not knowing they're the same.
Interesting about this story - the characters aren't beautiful. Gigi 'looks like a pug' (I used Christina Ricci from 'Sleepy Hollow' for her), and LaTourney has a birthmark on his face. Made things a little different. Oh, and I couldn't call him Mr. LaTourney - it was Monsieur LaTourney for me, the entire book. Your mileage my vary.
As to the writing/story, it was very well done. I love the verses and spiritual growth in this one. It was far and away better than most of the 'inspirational' books I've been reading, as of late. VERY well done. Also, the history in this is really well done, too. Getting to see George Washington, being in the throes of cannon fire off Governor's Island... it was very good.
I took a star for the coveting thing, though. Scripture says 'Thou shalt not covet', and here we have someone 'coveting your prayers'. Something that irks me to NO END in church. It grated me seriously badly here, too.
But mostly? It's a clean, Bible-centric variation on a popular theme. I definitely recommend it.
I had mixed feelings about this story. I think if the author made it a longer book, she could have done a great job at an intricate plot line. Considering it was a Heartsong Presents book, it was what I call a fluff book, something I'd read to tone down my brain right before bed but nothing too interesting to keep me up at night. I did like parts of the plot but also was wanting more depth at other parts. I also liked the main characters but would have loved seeing them in more depth too. Like I said, if it was stretched into a longer novel, I think this had a lot of potential. I would be willing to read some of the author's other stories to see what she comes up with.
Faithful Traitor by Jill Stengl is a historical Christian Romance set shortly before the American Revolutionary War. Originally a 2004 Heartsong Presents book, it’s been repackaged as the second story in Love’s Betrayal (2016) by Barbour Books. I received a copy of Love’s Betrayal from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
The Heroine:
Georgette Talbot, 20, is “far from plain” but not beautiful. Her father has chosen Mr. LaTournay to be her suitor. Georgette has misgivings because his reputation is less than stellar and she doesn’t believe she’s a good catch for such an exalted suitor.
The Hero:
Mr. LaTournay, an influential and wealthy business acquaintance of Georgette’s father, is serious and “his manners are somewhat stiff.” His last name is French, and his background is explained late into the story. I really loved Mr. LaTournay.
What I liked:
* I appreciated the spiritual growth in the characters.
*At one point, Georgette listens to a minister “drone about the evils of disobedience to Mother England.” I had not previously given much thought to how the people interpreted God’s laws pertaining to the fight for independence from England. I found this extremely interesting.
*There’s so much good (historical background, characters, and plot) packed into this book!
What I didn’t like:
*At one point, Georgette’s father slaps her. I wasn’t too keen on that, but I understand why it was put in.

I’d recommend this to fans of historical Christian romance and to people who love books set in the American Revolutionary War. I thought this book was pretty eye-opening about that time in history. I look forward to reading more by Jill Stengl.
My all-time favorite book, and a truely captivating tale of love, faith, and redemption. Georgette Talbot, a strong-willed and devout young woman, finds herself in quite the situation when her father arranges her marriage to the notorious Jean-Maurice LaTournay, a man with a reputation for womanizing.
As Georgette navigates the complexities of her betrothal and her growing feelings for Jean-Maurice, she also finds solace in her faith and prays for his salvation. When a series of events leads to accusations of infidelity and abandonment, Georgette's resolve to remain faithful to both her husband and God is put to the test.
In a stunning turn of events, the enigmatic 'Frog' reveals himself to be none other than Jean-Maurice, who has been working to protect the patriots and clear his reputation. The book culminates in a heartwarming conclusion, as Georgette and Jean-Maurice reunite, and their love is cemented by their shared faith.
This book has become a beloved favorite of mine, one that I have returned to multiple times, and its lessons continue to resonate with me. Georgette's unwavering commitment to her faith and her marriage is a testament to the power of love and redemption. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking a story of hope, forgiveness, and the transformative power of God's grace.

Found this book among shelf after shelf of cheaply priced, faith-based romances in a bookstore in a small town in southern Georgia. Since, clearly, such books were super popular in that area I wanted to try one myself.
In the field of faith-based romances this book is probably fine--I'm really not qualified to judge in this area. To me, though, the excessive references to faith felt unnatural. Also the heroine felt annoying and I could not see what was so special about her that, after barely meeting her, an important man in the community would want to devote himself to her for the rest of his life.
