Jonathan Keates, is an English writer, biographer, novelist and Chairman of the Venice in Peril Fund. Keates was educated at Bryanston School and went on to read for his undergraduate degree at Magdalen College, Oxford.
We hardly know anything about Purcell except that he may have had an affinity for drinking, which makes it difficult to stomach reading almost 300 pages about the lad. A great composer, to be sure, but I felt like I learned far more about the author's opinions on Purcell's music than about Purcell himself.
